MAJORS B.S. in Environmental Science This degree offers a practical and technical background in subdisciplines of environmental science to prepare students for careers in fields like environmental chemistry, conservation, land management, environmental consulting and industrial hygiene. Faculty Our faculty are leaders in biological research, tackling urgent questions in cancer biology, climate change and plant adaptation. From uncovering the molecular drivers of tumor progression to studying how animals and plants respond to shifting environments, they bring cutting-edge science into the classroom and lab. Their mentorship empowers students to conduct meaningful research, develop critical skills and prepare for impactful careers in science.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS Rohan Mehta, Ph.D. - Mehta is an evolutionary biologist and population geneticist who uses mathematical models to study the fundamental rules of life and how different living systems interact. His research has ranged from studying the genetics of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria to looking at the way human behavior affects the spread of disease to exploring theoretical topics, such as how cooperation between individuals can evolve. At Elmhurst, his focus is on bioinformatics and computational biology.

Kelly Ostler, Ph.D. - Ostler studies the genetics and epigenetics of cancer cells. Her research focuses on understanding how mutations of a single gene can change a cell from normal to cancer. At Elmhurst, she is studying inherited mutations in RUNX1 and how they predispose individuals to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

She and her students are testing changes in growth and differentiation of stem cells expressing patient specific RUNX1 mutant alleles.

Kelly Mikenas, Ph.D. - Mikenas is a plant ecologist with research interests in how urban environments can support native plant populations. Her lab is called the GREEN lab, which symbolizes the plants she studies as well as the research focuses on Green Roofs, Ecology and Environmental science.

Current projects in the GREEN lab include uncovering traits that allow native flowering plants to survive harsh environmental conditions of green roofs, how symbiotic fungi can assist plant survival in drought conditions, and the potential of plants on green roofs to aid in atmospheric carbon sequestration.

Mikenas is the program director for the Environmental Studies and Sciences programs.

CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS Evan Vanable, Ph.D. - Vanable is an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry. For his doctoral research, he examined the regio- and stereoselective hydroamination of alkenes using transition-metal catalysts.

He has taught courses primarily in the organic chemistry sequence and the sequence. In his classes, he explores the fundamental processes and theories that predict why and how a chemical reaction happens.

Michelle Applebee, Ph.D. - Applebee teaches general chemistry using a flipped classroom approach, where students view lectures at home and do homework in class. This allows each student to get personalized help when they need it.

Beyond the classroom, Applebee serves as the faculty advisor for the chemistry and pre-veterinary clubs on campus.

Sunshine Silver, Ph.D. - Silver, an associate professor of chemistry, is a bioinorganic chemist. She has several research projects ongoing with Elmhurst students in various areas of biochemistry, including the DOE-supported photocatalysis collaboration that also includes student and faculty researchers at two other area universities and Argonne National Laboratory. She has expertise in a broad range of molecular biology, biochemistry and wet chemistry techniques.

Cybersecurity Leadership Designated a CyberPatriot Center of Excellence, Elmhurst hosts an annual Cyber Camp for middle and high school students, introducing them to cybersecurity, ethics and online safety while teaching practical skills for securing Windows and Linux systems.

NSF-Funded Teacher Training Through a $500,000 National Science Foundation grant, Elmhurst is training high school teachers to integrate cybersecurity into their classrooms, with workshops held in partnership with Arcadia University in Pennsylvania.

Cutting-Edge Facilities The newly approved Elmhurst University Cyber Lab provides a hub for advanced cybersecurity learning and research, bolstered by an academic partnership with Fortinet that offers students certification training and vouchers.

Immersive Technology Spaces Launching in Fall 2026, the Virtual and Augmented Reality Makerspace will give students hands-on access to emerging technologies. The Makerspace was developed in partnership with the Digital Media department through a Department of Defense grant.

Faculty COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS David W. Brown, Ph.D - Brown is an accomplished educator, researcher and cybersecurity advocate currently serving as the chair and associate professor in the Department of Computer Science. He earned his Ph.D. in interdisciplinary engineering, MBA in management information systems and B.S. in computer and information science. With a professional background that spans both academia and industry, Brown has cultivated expertise in parallel and distributed computing, cybersecurity education and instructional innovation. His teaching philosophy centers on nurturing growth, empowering intelligence and inspiring excellence through rigorous, inclusive and hands-on learning.

Ali Ghane, MSEE, MSBE - Ghane joined Elmhurst University in 1996 as assistant director for academic computing and became a full-time faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems in 1997. He is currently an associate professor and program director of the Master of Computer Information Systems (MCIS) program. His research focuses on blind adaptive filtering, voice recognition, digital signal processing and computer networks.

Dean Jensen, Ed.D., MBA - Jensen’s current research centers around the areas of web and mobile application development, DevOps and cloud computing. He has worked in the industry as a vice president for technology at Synergistic Networks, Inc., where he managed the concurrent activities of multiple project teams dedicated to the design and development of client-focused web applications, as well as overseeing the operation of the company’s internet data center.

The CSIS program at Elmhurst University has given me the skills to pursue amazing and competitive opportunities, including a data science internship at Argonne National Laboratory. The hands-on learning, faculty mentorship and collaborative environment have prepared me to take on real-world research challenges.

Dr. Terrence D. Lagerlund is associate professor of neurology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. His research involves mathematical analysis of electroencephalographic data, especially EEG source localization with applications to better localization of epileptic seizures. He is also a recipient of the Southern Electroencephalographic Society Caton award.

MATHEMATICS FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS Evans Afenya, Ph.D. - Afenya is an internationally known applied mathematician who has received a number of National Science Foundation grants for cancer research (mathematical modeling of cancer and cancer treatments). He has numerous research publications in the mathematical biosciences. He has presented his research in international forums in the Americas, Europe and Africa. He is the founder and director of the Elmhurst University Summer STEM Academy, which strives to increase the number of women and students of color in science and mathematics.

Abigail Hoit, Ph.D. - Hoit does research in Analytic Number Theory: Non-decimal Numeration Systems and Related Sequences. She is a Mathematical Association of America Project NExT Fellow. Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is sponsored by the Exxon-Mobil Foundation and the Mathematical Association of America.

Aileen Murphy, M.A. - Mathematically, Murphy is interested in the connections between math and nature and the arts. Her senior thesis as an undergraduate was titled “The TRUE Permutations of the Bells” and dealt with English change ringing, which is a traditional art of ringing a set of tower bells in an intricate series of patterns. She also leads students on international adventures during J-Term.

Dr. Susan Brown is the former chair of the mathematics department of York Community High School; UCSMP Algebra I and Pre-calculus writing team member; former president of the Chicago Metropolitan Mathematics Club; former Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics Board member; and a member of the editorial panel of Mathematics Teacher.

State-of-the-Art Facilities Two new machine shops support student projects: one for metalwork with a CNC milling machine, and another for rapid prototyping with four 3D printers (including one for soft materials) and a large-bed laser cutter.

Faculty Elmhurst’s physics faculty are accomplished researchers pushing the boundaries of knowledge across astrophysics, quantum optics, neuroscience and more. Their work spans building next-generation neutrino telescopes, studying the physics of quasars, and exploring how biological systems process sensory information, bringing cutting-edge research and mentorship directly into the classroom.

PHYSICS FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS Venkatesh Gopal, Ph.D. - Gopal has conducted postdoctoral research in classical and quantum optics, quantum information processing and neuroscience. His research focuses on how biological systems process sensory information and optimize movement to gather data efficiently. At Elmhurst, he is establishing the Biological Information Transduction and Sensing (BITS) lab.

Initial studies in the BITS lab are focused on how mammals and insects track odor plumes using optical imaging.

Robert Halliday, Ph.D. - Halliday specializes in particle astrophysics, working on cosmic rays, neutrino astronomy, gamma-ray astronomy, exoplanets and medical imaging physics. He is currently building the Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE), a cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope off the coast of Vancouver.

Brian C. Wilhite, Ph.D. - Wilhite studies the physics of quasars, young galaxies with active super-massive black holes, by analyzing ultraviolet and optical variations using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. He has authored 20 peer-reviewed publications and is dedicated to science outreach, particularly for underrepresented students.

PSYCHOLOGY FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS Josh VanArsdall, Ph.D. - VanArsdall studies cognition through a functional lens, considering how both the modern function and evolutionary history of our cognitive systems affect the ways people think. He primarily studies memory and is an expert on both its evolutionary history and educational applications (such as study strategies). Other areas of work include research projects and initiatives related to skill learning, expertise, neuroethics, human sexuality, the LGBTQIA+ community, and diversity, equity and belonging.

Elizabeth “Liz” A. Majka, Ph.D. - A social psychologist, Majka researches belonging, nonverbal behavior, well-being, prosocial behavior and attitude strength. She mentors students in research and is an advisor for the Psychology Club.

Catherine Gaze, Ph.D. - Gaze teaches courses related to clinical and developmental psychology. Her research is focused on the role of family processes in the development of child psychopathology. She has examined the relationship of parenting stress to child outcomes and explored the emotional self-regulation of children. She recently studied myths in psychology.
