SUMMER LEARNING ADVENTURES INFORMATION Dates:

Summer School begins on Monday, June 17 and runs through Friday, July 19. There will be no classes held on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5.

Location:

Incoming Kindergarten, and current K, 1st, and 2nd grade classes will be held at Burleigh Elementary, 16185 Burleigh Place, Brookfield (please register your students at their grade level during 2018-2019 School Year) Current 3rd-8th grade classes will be held at Brookfield Central H.S., 16900 W. Gebhardt Road, Brookfield (please register your students at their grade level during 2018-2019 School Year)

• Registration opens on Tuesday, March 5 at 8:00 am via the Infinite Campus Portal.

• For current Elmbrook District students you will log into your Infinite Campus Account and select 18-19 Summer School Registration. Follow the prompts to select your summer school courses.

• If you are a new family with a child entering kindergarten in 2019-20, or is currently enrolled at a private school, prior to registration please complete the District’s online enrollment form and provide required verification documents at the Central Administrative Office (deadline Thursday, February 28) • Course placement is by lottery, every student has the same priority in course placement. Registration closes on March 22. Your Summer School Schedule will be posted in your student’s Infinite Campus Account on or about April 8, 2019.

All transportation fees still apply and are are payable upon registration. Transportation fees can be paid on MyPaymentsPlus.

Refunds:

NO BUS REFUNDS are issued once the summer school session has begun.

Open House:

You and your child will be able to come navigate the hallways to see where their classrooms are on Wednesday, June 12, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Staff will be available to answer questions.

Transportation:

Due to the number of students enrolled in Summer School, students are strongly encouraged to use the district bus transportation. Bus transportation is available to all K-8 resident students and Chapter 220 students. Students will board buses at their neighborhood school and be transported to summer school locations depending upon the program they are enrolled in. At the end of the summer school day, students will be transported from summer school locations to their neighborhood site. No home-tohome service.

Transportation will be provided for Chapter 220 students attending K-8 Summer School provided they are enrolled in Periods 1, 2, and 3. Bus transportation is not available for students attending only one or two periods a day. If your child receives free or reduced lunch at school, you are eligible for free tuition for bus transportation, you must notify the summer school office to have the waiver applied.

Transportation Fee:

$50/child with a two student fee cap.Please notify the summer school coordinator if you have more than 2 students, the system doesn’t automatically acknowledge the discount.

SUMMER LEARNING ADVENTURES INFORMATION CONT. Bus Locations for Morning Pick-Up & Afternoon Drop-Off: Busses will pick-up and drop-off students at each of the following buildings in the District: Brookfield Elem., Dixon, Burleigh, Tonawanda, Swanson, Wisconsin Hills, Pilgrim Park and Brookfield Central.

• Pick up and drop off times are TBD • Notification will be sent to parents closer to the start of summer school

Parent Drop-Off:

• Please do not park and leave your vehicle unattended in drop off area. This area is utilized for a quick curbside drop-off and pick-up.

• All waiting vehicles will be asked to pull forward as other vehicles leave to relieve congestion.

• We ask parents who wish to escort their children in and out of school to please park in designated locations.

YMCA Summer School Wrap Around Camp:

The West Suburban YMCA & the YMCA of Greater Waukesha County will be offering a Summer School Wrap Around Camp for K-8 grade at Burleigh Elementary School from 12:15-6:00 pm. To participate in the YMCA program, the student must be enrolled in a third period class. 3-day and 5-day options are available each week. For more information about this camp visit online at www.gwcymca.org. You can find the registration form for the YMCA on our website, www.elmbrookschools.org/summerschool. If your child is attending summer school at Brookfield Central High School and will use the YMCA Wrap Around Camp, you must sign up for busing and pay for the bussing fees.

Registration can be completed online at www.gwcymca.org/manageaccount. The YMCA Camp is tax deductible child care, accepts state/3rd party child care assistance (Wisconsin Shares), can be used for flexible spending accounts, and provides FREE afternoon snack.

Early Activity Period: There is a One-time Fee of $50 for early activity period. It begins at 7:30 am with a 50 student capacity, and slots for this opportunity fill fast. Early Activity Period provides supervised time before summer school where students can play board games, inside games, or arts and crafts. Students may attend from 1 to 23 days.

Students With Individual Educational Plans (IEPs):

If you feel your child with a disability may need access to the accommodation provided to them during the school year in their IEP to participate in a summer school course, please contact your child’s case manager to set up an IEP meeting.

• Grades 1-2 This exciting introduction to coding explores digital resources such as ScratchJr., Tynker and Kodable to inspire creativity and expression, enabling children to create their own interactive projects through coding. Students will leave this course with knowledge of a variety of tools they can use to pursue their coding interest throughout the year.

Their objective is to create an engaging story that follows a set of challenging puzzles to “break free” from the box. Students will focus on concept mapping in language arts all the while developing their critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in mathematics. Period 1: 8:15-9:30; Period 2: 9:35-10:50; Period 3: 10:55-12:10 • Grade 7-8 • Prerequisite: This course is designed for students grades 7 or 8 who are currently enrolled in Pre-Algebra This course is for a student in 7th or 8th grade currently enrolled in Pre-Algebra. This course helps to review skills that are needed for Algebra I. The focus will be on solving algebraic problems and graphing linear equations using rational numbers. Ratios, proportions, percents, and geometry will be integrated throughout.

Preparation will focus on the following learning targets: Applying and demonstrating understanding of the distributive property; solving a multi-step equation with real numbers; writing and solving equations from story problems; graphing functions – slope, triangle. Variation, rate of change, x&y intercept; solving systems of equations; solving linear inequalities by graphing, substitution and elimination; multiplication & division properties of exponents.

Students who enroll in this course should feel comfortable with rigor and an accelerated pace.

Create Your Own Comics is the first chapter towards a lifelong appreciation of comics. Learn drawing tips and techniques to create your own visually interesting characters. Develop your creative writing skills to create exciting settings and stories for your characters! Marvel at the history of comics and how they evolved into a unique form of art.

• Grades 3-5; 6-8 Come discover the wide world of technology. Students will gain an assortment of skills such as: keyboarding, coding, making avatars, and editing images to make memes. They will also explore websites like Powtoon, Moovly, Smore, Blabberize, Tour Builder, Voki and many more. Students will have fun creating a variety of technology projects on topics of their interest. They will gain knowledge and experience with technology that will help them in school and everyday life.

• Grades 5-8 The verdict is in! The defendant is…… In this class students will learn about courtroom trials, legal terms (arrests, defense, guilt, Miranda warning), and our U.S. legal system. Students will read the background of certain legal cases and divide into prosecution and defense teams. The students will act out the trials of accused persons and prosecute or defend the accused. In addition, we will look at the U.S. Constitution and discuss certain amendments. Students who enroll in this course should have interest in working collaboratively and creatively with others. The course requires high-level thinking and problem solving.

• Grades 5-8 During “Picture This…” students will be exposed to a variety of photography methods. Students will learn many digital photo techniques including how to intentionally blur an image, framing and composition techniques for naturescapes and how to creatively mount their photographs.

In this course, students will discover strategies using math, logic, and problem-solving skills to become the champion of the class. Games such as Battleship, Othello, Mancala, Knockout, and Blokus will be the primary tools used to develop strategies and higher-level thinking. We will explore how these wonders were built, who built them and why they were built. A study of both history and current information will be covered. Students will have a chance to create their own list of wonders and design their own “8th Wonder”.

Period 1: 8:15-9:30; Period 2: 9:35-10:50; Period 3: 10:55-12:10 • Grades 6-8 Students will look at the various aspects of robotic construction and design. Working in small groups, students will design, build and program different robotic machines to solve a variety of problems. Robots will be judged in a series of friendly competitions with classmates.

Period 1: 8:15-9:30; Period 2: 9:35-10:50; Period 3: 10:55-12:10 • Grades 3-5 We will study scrapbook techniques including titling, framing, captioning, and decorating. The scrapbook will tell the story of a certain event/time in the student’s life, i.e. “Middle School Years!”, “My First Pet”, “Our Summer Vacation”, etc. Each student will select 20 or more personal photos to use in the creation of their own unique keepsake. Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to share favorite memories with friends and treasure them forever.

• Grades 3-8 • Lessons are from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm (30 minute - 1x a week) • Please visit google survey to request day and time: Elmbrook Summer School Band and Orchestra Registration This course is offered to anyone, grades 3-8, looking to study privately or in a small group on a band or a string instrument. Space is limited to 180 in Band and 45 in Strings. Summer band and orchestra lessons offer students a chance to improve performance on their instruments, review technique in the summer, and play exciting music that will appeal to their ability and personality. Summer lessons offer students a chance to receive small group professional instruction. Each student will be scheduled for four 30 minute sessions between June 17 and July 19. It is strongly recommended that incoming 6th grade students who are first time band or orchestra members consider signing up for this opportunity.
