Compliance certification Our knowledge of legislation for Food Contact Materials includes EU 10/2011, FDA, Dutch Warenwet, BfR (Germany), Swiss Ordinance and other global legislation. TRISKELION has outstanding testing facilities and experience in several FCM's including (bio) plastic, paper, metal, glass, coatings, adhesives and printing inks.

Together to the end Samen naar het einde Packaging is the temporary integration of an external function and a product to enable the use of the product. The industry packs a product some 320,000 times every second and the world’s population unpacks those products somewhere else and later in time: an insanely large number. Companies striving to play a positive role in this setting are very welcome in our association.

At present, the NVC family counts about five hundred member companies, but of course there is always room for new enthusiastic entrants. This year, we have over two hundred packaging activities planned for, by and with you!

De industrie verpakt iedere seconde zo’n 320.000 keer een product en de wereldbevolking pakt die producten ergens anders en later weer uit: een waanzinnig groot getal. Bedrijven die in deze setting een positieve rol willen spelen, zijn van harte welkom bij onze vereniging. Op dit moment telt de NVC-familie zo’n vijfhonderd lidbedrijven, maar er is natuurlijk altijd plaats voor nieuwe enthousiaste toetreders. Dit jaar staan er ruim tweehonderd verpakkingsactiviteiten op het programma voor, door en met u!

Special attention in this NVC Special 2022 for our PUMA project, where the environmental problem associated with packaging is thoroughly and collectively addressed. We build on a wealth of experience; from the first (European) legislation in the year 1994, NVC has played an active role. In 2016 we decided to double our efforts and launched PUMA. PUMA brings the packaging community together with a holistic, innovative approach. The goal is unambiguous: let’s work together to end packaging as an environmental issue. The 6th PUMA Annual Meeting will be held on 16 March 2022 and the 7th is already in the pipeline. It will coincide with the PUMA World Conference on 3 May 2023 in Düsseldorf, Germany (the day before interpack there). Watch the trailer on the website and register for the meeting on 16 March 2022. 1. Why

PUMA? Waarom PUMA?

Packaging has been around since ancient times, but the 20th century has seen a dramatic acceleration.

The world now packs at least 320,000 products every second, which results in as many emptied packages later in time and at another location. We don’t seem to have enough control over the whole process and this has led to major environmental concerns in industry and society. It is high time that we learn from the mistakes we have made over the past decades. This requires careful analysis, holistic cooperation and - last but not least - confidence in our own abilities. After all, we must be able to solve the problems we have caused ourselves.

Verpakken doen we al sinds de oudheid, maar de 20e eeuw heeft een dramatische versnelling teweeggebracht. De wereld verpakt nu minstens 320.000 producten per seconde, wat resulteert in evenveel geleegde verpakkingen later in de tijd en op een andere locatie. We (b)lijken dit onvoldoende in de hand te hebben en dit heeft in industrie en maatschappij tot grote milieuzorgen geleid. Het wordt hoog tijd dat we leren van de fouten die we de afgelopen decennia gemaakt hebben. Dat vereist zorgvuldige analyse, holistische samenwerking en – last but not least – ook vertrouwen in eigen kunnen. Wat we veroorzaakt hebben, moeten we immers ook kunnen oplossen.

As an image of holistic collaboration we often use the Rubik’s Cube. After analysis, sometimes an amazingly fast solution is found; the world record for solving a Rubik’s Cube is less than four seconds! Meanwhile, the PUMA MANIFESTO has been published in six languages: English, French, Japanese, Italian, Chinese and Dutch. Where would self-service be without packaged products? Supermarkets, department stores and web shops play an important role in packaging. They are often the interface between business and consumers. The customer buys and uses, or consumes, the product. In other words: the consumer creates - sometime later and at a different moment than at purchase - the empty pack and, if all goes well, returns it to the industry or a government organisation for further responsible processing.

Waar zou zelfbediening zijn zonder verpakte producten? Supermarkten, warenhuizen en webwinkels spelen een belangrijke rol in het verpakken. Zij zijn veelal het interface tussen het bedrijfsleven en de consument. De klant koopt en gebruikt, dan wel consumeert, het product. Anders gezegd: de consument creëert - enige tijd later en op een ander moment dan bij aankoop - een lege verpakking en brengt deze, als het goed is, terug bij bedrijfsleven dan wel een overheidsorganisatie voor verdere verantwoorde verwerking.

2. Meetings Bijeenkomsten

The PUMA community meets annually for its plenary discussion. We use the NVC Live Hybrid method. You can participate live physically on location (often with an afterparty) or purely live online from your favourite location anywhere in the world. The 6th PUMA Annual Meeting is on 16 March 2022 in Gouda.

The 6th PUMA Annual Meeting is on 16 March 2022 in Gouda, the 7th is part of the PUMA World Conference in 2023. The preparations for the Programme Committee of the conference are in full swing. The PUMA World Conference is Live Hybrid from the Sheraton Düsseldorf Airport Hotel on 3 May 2023. Hot topic is the coding of packaging materials used in retail, to fulfill the requirements for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) that will be imposed on these companies. An NVC-GS1 think tank is active here, which will meet on 27 January 2022, among other dates.

PET flessen producent Ducona investeert in kernwaarden Dutch containers Aalten (Ducona) is opgericht op 1 maart 1991 en is toen, vanuit het oogpunt van betrouwbaarheid, begonnen met het produceren en leveren van PET verpakkingen. Met betrouwbaarheid wordt bedoeld betrouwbaar in kwaliteit, betrouwbaar in voorraadbeheer, betrouwbaar in levering maar ook betrouwbaar in ontwikkeling.

Het commitment van Ducona om betrouwbaar te zijn, werd al snel gewaardeerd door afnemers waardoor vandaag de dag klanten binnen heel Europa op de Ducona formule vertrouwen en de jaarlijkse productiecapaciteit is gestegen naar 250.000.000 PET verpakkingen per jaar. Ook de jaarlijkse gemiddelde groei van +20% de afgelopen 10 jaar, ieder jaar opnieuw, kenmerkt de populariteit van Ducona.

Wat doet Ducona anders dan de rest?

Het businessmodel van Ducona Holland heeft als uitgangspunt het ontzorgen van haar contractpartners. Belangrijk onderdeel

hierin is het houden van voorraad. Dit gebeurd voor zowel slow als fastmovers.

Het voordeel voor de klant bij voorraad houden, is dat er kan worden ingespeeld op (seizoens) pieken in de afzet en dat Ducona snelle levertijden kan garanderen. Ben je contractpartner met voorraad bij Ducona? Dan is de levertijd maximaal 48 uur (of sneller in overleg). Ruimte bij de klant die eerst werd gebruikt voor het opslaan van “lucht” kan nu worden gebruikt voor andere bedrijfsactiviteiten zoals afvullen. Dat is pas ontzorgen!

Het verlangen naar betrouwbaarheid houdt bij Ducona niet op bij voorraad. Zo heeft Ducona ook geïnvesteerd in de volgende punten: - Elke machine 100% leak testing - Enkel gebruik van A-merk (blaas) machines - Het maken van een Business Continuity Management (BCM) plan.

- BRC-certificaat, afgerond met level AA (voedselveiligheid)

- Uitgebreide kwaliteitscontroles door kundige medewerkers Daarnaast investeert Ducona Holland BV in opleidingen voor haar medewerkers om de ontwikkelingen in de branche te volgen zodat ze klanten diverse opties kunnen bieden en zo tot een verpakkingen komen die de identiteit van de klant het best benadrukt.

Duurzaamheid Ducona Holland BV zet op verschillende manieren in op duurzaamheid. Zo wekt Ducona 25% van haar energie behoefte op met 3500 eigen zonnepanelen. Ook kan Ducona gebruik maken van verschillende materialen zoals R-PET. Dit kan in verschillende verhoudingen tot 100%.

Naast materiaalkeuze kan ook in overleg worden gekeken naar de mogelijkheden van materiaalreductie bij bestaande modellen. Op deze manier probeert Ducona Holland BV haar ecologische footprint zo klein mogelijk te houden.

Wat staat er nog gepland voor Ducona?

- Ducona Holland bv heeft na een uitbreiding van 2500m2 in 2016 opnieuw geïnvesteerd in additioneel 3700m2 warehousing, dit wordt een automatisch magazijn. Door deze automatisering kan straks tot 16,5 meter hoogte worden opgeslagen zonder dat het heftruckpark moet worden uitgebreid.

- Er worden voorbereidingen getroffen voor automatic guided vehicles (AGV’s) - Uitbreiding van de one step blaasmachines voor het maken van onder andere PET potten en shot flesjes.

No healthy business and society without good legislation, rules and standards in the field of packaging and the environment. As an association, we closely follow global developments in order to provide our member companies with timely information. Even more important is helping members to find the relevant parts of existing regulations and possible future changes.

Naturally, from PUMA’s perspective, we also keep in close contact with the people and organisations involved in the developments: officials, politicians and interest groups.

Generally speaking, we do not seek publicity in this respect, but try to take action together with one or more member companies. This is part of the paradox of working at the NVC association office: being effective is often not the same as being visible...

Geen goed bedrijfsleven en gezonde maatschappij zonder goede wetgeving, regels en normen op het gebied van verpakkingen en milieu. Als vereniging volgen we de wereldwijde ontwikkelingen nauwlettend om onze lidbedrijven tijdig te kunnen informeren. BluePrint Automation: Specialist in flexibele verpakkingsoplossingen Van een semi-automatische verpakkingsmachine tot het uitdenken en leveren van complexe maatwerk verpakkingslijnen; BluePrint Automation (BPA) is van alle verpakkingsmarkten thuis. Commercieel directeur Jos van Oekel licht een aantal belangrijke marktontwikkelingen toe en bespreekt de gevolgen hiervan voor geautomatiseerd verpakken. “Verticaal verpakken en producten mixen is een trend geworden.”

Van Oekel: “De supermarkten bepalen steeds meer hoe onze klanten hun producten moeten verpakken. Vooral de Duitse supermarkten vragen om shelf ready-verpakkingen en die trend zet door. We moeten steeds meer rechtop verpakken. De single shelf ready-dozen met één SKU zijn natuurlijk bekend, maar wat je steeds meer ziet, zijn de grotere shelf ready-dozen met een mix aan producten. Dat verticaal verpakken en mixen van verschillende producten is een trend geworden die gevolgen heeft voor het secundaire verpakkingsproces.”

Speciale toevoer- en bufferlijnen Het samenvoegen van verschillende producten in één mixed verpakking kan door meerdere machines aan te sluiten op één case packer. Dankzij de speciaal daarvoor ontwikkelde toevoeren bufferlijnen is het vervolgens mogelijk producten in de juis-

te mix te verpakken. “Voor bepaalde producten is het echter moeilijk om dat online te doen, vanwege de complexiteit van het productieproces. En een nadeel is dat je inlevert op de efficiency, bijvoorbeeld doordat er een disbalans in de toevoer ontstaat. Ons buffersysteem kan dat deels opvangen, maar niet oneindig.”

Primair en secundair ontkoppelen Sommige fabrikanten kiezen er daarom voor om het primaire verpakkingsproces los te koppelen om efficiënt te kunnen blijven produceren. De producten worden dan eerst verpakt in een primaire verpakking en gaan vervolgens naar een tijdelijke (work in progress) opslaglocatie. Pas als er een order is, gaan de goederen naar de secundaire verpakkingsmachine in de juiste toevoer en mix. “Dat hele traject van loskoppelen van beide processen, het inrichten van de primaire handling, het in de correcte omdoos of krat verpakken, het afvoeren naar de tussenopslag, het afroepen, ontladen en het secundair verpakken; die hele verpakkingsketen efficiënt en effectief inrichten doen we meer en meer.”

Projectmanagersrol Van Oekel noemt als voorbeeld een recent project voor een grote garnalenleverancier. “Dat bedrijf heeft een ongelooflijke

Het primaire proces is hier losgekoppeld van het secundaire waardoor het bedrijf grotere productieruns kan draaien. BPA heeft samen met de producent speciale kratten ontwikkeld voor alle verschillende bakjes en het hele verpakkingsproces mede opnieuw ingericht. Hetzelfde deed BPA ook voor een grote ijsproducent van een Duitse supermarkt. Voor die opdracht was BPA ook de projectmanager. “Als ‘single source’ contactpersoon, dus tussen de andere leveranciers en de klant, ervoor zorgen dat alles op tijd en volgens specificatie wordt opgeleverd.”

Daarnaast experimenteren we volop met augmented realitytechnieken, zodat we operators op afstand kunnen bijstaan.”

Dat laatste past in het volledige programma aan service- en onderhoudsdiensten om klanten helemaal te kunnen ontzorgen en hen zo lang mogelijk probleemloos gebruik te kunnen laten maken van de verpakkingsmachines. Van Staveren: “Sowieso is en blijft het uitgangspunt bij elke nieuwe machine die we ontwikkelen: zo min mogelijk operators, zo min mogelijk training en zo min mogelijk onderhoud.”

BPA: wereldwijd actief Vierkante meters en arbeidskrachten Van Oekel: “We zien dat door corona een snelle return on investment niet altijd meer leidend is. Bedrijven moesten de productie terugschroeven omdat er maar één persoon aan de lijn mocht staan. Die kiezen er nu voor om versneld hun verpakkingslijnen te automatiseren.” Ook zien we dat het aantal vierkante meters op productielocaties en beschikbare arbeidskrachten kritischer wordt. De nieuwste generatie verpakkingsmachines, zoals bijvoorbeeld de Spider Q serie, wordt daarom compacter en bevat veel meer functies dan voorheen. Op deze manier kunnen productiebedrijven besparen op ruimte en zijn zij minder afhankelijk van arbeidskrachten, zegt collega Karin van Staveren. De machines worden bovendien steeds slimmer, met servotechnieken en sensoren. Van Oekel: “Tijdens corona installeerden we 24 lijnen in een fabriek in India grotendeels op afstand. Alleen de commissioning deden we lokaal.

Flexibel in verpakkingen, machines en organisatie; dat is het credo van BluePrint Automation.

Het familiebedrijf bestond vorig jaar veertig jaar en levert wereldwijd aan grote multinationals maar ook aan mkb-bedrijven in uiteenlopende markten. De hoofdvestiging staat in Woerden en er zijn nog twee productielocaties in Amerika.

Totaal heeft het bedrijf ruim vijfhonderd medewerkers in dienst die samen een omzet behalen van ruim 150 miljoen euro. Vorig jaar realiseerde het een omzetgroei van tien procent. Jos van Oekel: “Innovatief, flexibel en toegewijd zijn aan de klant vormen de basis van ons succes.”

Commemorative PUMA presentation with attributes from a party store in September 2019 at the German packaging exhibition FACHPACK 2019 in Nuremberg (Germany) on the Packbox stage. That year marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the publication in Europe of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (1994). Interesting fact: the German Minister for the Environment at that time was a relatively unknown politician from the former GDR: Angela Merkel.

PUMA strives for professionals in companies and other organisations in the field of packaging to acquire the knowledge, expertise and skills to effectively work towards the end of packaging as an environmental issue. A crucial aspect of this is gaining the ability to acquire relevant information and apply it effectively in one’s own work situation. This is more than simply learning checklists on the basis of the existing situation. After all, innovation is precisely what is needed to achieve the goal!

PUMA streeft ernaar dat professionals in de bedrijven en andere organisaties op verpakkingsgebied zelf de kennis, kunde en vaardigheden verwerven om effectief mee te werken aan het einde van verpakking als milieuprobleem. Cruciaal is daarvoor het aanleren van het vermogen relevante informatie te verwerven en goed toe te passen in de eigen werksituatie. Dit stijgt uit boven het simpelweg aanleren van checklists op basis van de bestaande situatie; er moet immers juist geïnnoveerd worden om het doel te bereiken!

The NVC Workshop Sustainable Innovation in Packaging (STIP) is now in its twentieth year. Every year, about four classes of up to 15 business students learn the basics of packaging, sustainable development and innovation in packaging. They also apply the acquired insights in a meanwhile famous business case: “Charlene’s Chocolate Drinks Ltd”. The STIP workshop is Live Online and takes two half-days to complete. You can participate from any workplace, supported by the 24/7 NVC online learning environment.

De NVC Workshop Duurzaam Innoveren in Verpakken (Sustainable Innovation in Packaging, STIP) heeft inmiddels zijn twintigste jaargang beleefd. Ieder jaar leren zo’n vier klassen van maximaal 15 bedrijfsstudenten de basisprincipes van verpakken, duurzame ontwikkeling en innovatie op verpakkingsgebied.

Ze passen de verworven inzichten ook toe in een inmiddels fameuze bedrijfscase: “Charlene’s Chocolate Drinks Ltd.”. De STIP-workshop is Live Online en neemt twee halve dagen in beslag. U kunt meedoen vanaf iedere werkplek, ondersteund door de 24/7 NVC online leeromgeving.

5. Innovation Innovatie

PUMA is a source of inspiration and therefore also of innovation. We follow innovations closely, but also stimulate research by universities, research institutes and of course NVC member companies. One spearhead of the PUMA project is the further application of information in both the Frontend and the Collect-Control and Backend phases of packaging. Another is the creation and large-scale production of new packaging materials or the manufacturing of existing packaging materials in new ways. Last but not least, we stimulate research on how packaging and the way the product is presented can influence consumer behaviour.

Examples from 2021 are the Entropak study in which beer was followed from the brewery to the glass bottle banks. We are now working on a follow-up with inspiration from the pharmaceutical industry, where the consumer as a patient has an interest in better traceability. Another high-profile project in 2021 was the ‘twin’ research project on the design of bottles for mineral water in the Chinese market. In progress is a project that maps the critical points for scaling up processes for biobased packaging materials.

Indirectly, our biennial packaging innovation contest De Gouden Noot plays a particularly important role as a window on the finest innovations worldwide. The 30th edition was concluded in 2020 with the winner being a phenomenal technique for coding plastic packaging to support better material recycling.

Eén speerpunt vanuit het PUMA-project is het verder toepassen van informatie in zowel de Frontend als de Collect-Control en Backend fase van het verpakken. Een ander is het bedenken en op grote schaal gaan maken van nieuwe verpakkingsmaterialen, dan wel het op een nieuwe manier gaan maken van bestaande verpakkingsmaterialen. Last but not least stimuleren we onderzoek naar de wijze waarop de verpakking en de wijze waarop het product wordt aangeboden, het consumentengedrag kunnen beïnvloeden.

Where is the beer and where are the emptied beer bottles? That question was answered in a unique PUMA research project at the University of Twente. Three master students managed to obtain a dynamic image of the bottles from the moment and location of filling up to the moment that the emptied bottles were deposited in the bottle bank by the consumer sometime later and at a different location.

Waar blijft het bier en waar blijven de geleegde bierflessen? Die vraag werd beantwoord in een uniek PUMA-onderzoeksproject aan de Universiteit Twente. Drie masterstudenten slaagden er in een dynamisch beeld te verkrijgen van de flessen vanaf afvulmoment en -locatie tot en met het moment dat de geleegde flessen enige tijd later en op een andere locatie door de consument in de glasbak werden gedeponeerd.

Collaborative carton loading system

FlexLink‘s assortiment van samenwerkingstoepassingen biedt alternatieve oplossingen voor drie belangrijke arbeidsintensieve procespunten tijdens de productie: karton- en materiaaltoevoer aan het begin van een lijn; kartonneren of doosbelading in het midden; en palletiseren aan het einde van de lijn.

De “RC10 Carton Loader” is het nieuwste lid van het samenwerkingsaanbod van FlexLink, waardoor er minder handmatig karton hoeft te worden geladen aan het begin van een productielijn. De “RC10 Carton Loader” is een robotapplicatie die in staat is om vastgebonden bundels platte dozen van een pallet te pakken en in het machinemagazijn te plaatsen.

Met behulp van de nieuwste technologie pakt de “RC10 Carton Loader” de bundels platte dozen op, plaatst ze op de invoer van de machine, snijdt het kunststof bandje door en deponeert deze elke keer in de afvalbak. Met uitgebreide ervaring met het inte-

greren van collaboratieve robots in productielijnen en meer dan 700 collaboratieve robotinstallaties wereldwijd, neemt FlexLink het belang van operatorveiligheid op in alle transportbanden en robottoepassingen. Door uitgebreide tests door derden en het volgen van de ISO-norm TS 15066 voor collaboratieve robots, kunnen operators er zeker van zijn dat ze veilig naast de robots kunnen werken.

NVC was founded in 1953 in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

In 2022, NVC unites over 500 companies worldwide.

Together we strive to improve packaging. The membership includes retailers, packaging suppliers, machine suppliers, branded article manufacturers, packaging printers, co-packers, design agencies, recyclers, testing institutes and all other companies with an interest in packaging. The board and management meet quarterly. The annual accounts are audited by an external accountant whose findings are reported at the Statutory Meeting of the GMM. The Statutory Meeting includes the Annual Report of the past association year, the board changes and the budget for the coming association year. After the Statutory Meeting we organise an attractive thematic meeting.

The next GMM will take place on Thursday 17 November 2022 and the theme will be packaging innovation, with the 31st edition of our packaging innovation contest De Gouden Noot setting the tone.

Bestuur en directie vergaderen ieder kwartaal. De jaarrekening wordt gecontroleerd door een externe accountant wiens bevindingen worden gemeld in de Huishoudelijke Vergadering van de ALV. De Huishoudelijke Vergadering omvat de behandeling van het Jaarverslag van het afgelopen verenigingsjaar, de bestuursmutaties en de begroting voor het komende verenigingsjaar.

Na de Huishoudelijke Vergadering organiseren we een aansprekende themabijeenkomst.

De volgende ALV vindt plaats op donderdag 17 november 2022 en het thema is verpakkingsinnovatie, waarbij de 31e editie van onze verpakkingsinnovatiewedstrijd De Gouden Noot de toon zet.

Optimize your production process with a Boix Tray Forming machine

Reliability, that has been one of the main reasons for choosing a Boix machine. Heemskerk fresh & easy is one of our customers where it started with only one machine, but now has expanded to nine Boix machines!

In 1960 Wim Heemskerk laid the foundation for Heemskerk with the production and sale of bags of sliced soup vegetables on the wholesale market (known as: Groothandelsmarkt) in Amsterdam. In 60 years, Heemskerk fresh & easy has grown into a modern and progressive company that processes fruit and vegetables with innovative products and concepts. They supply around 3.5 million fresh convenience products to retail companies and fast-food chains both at home and abroad every week.

Back in the days Heemskerk was working together with a tray erecting center. This center took care of gluing and forming cardboard trays. After they were formed, the trays were stacked and prepared for transport. As the years went by both demands and production increased. For Heemskerk, this was the right time to invest in their own Boix machines. This made the demand for their own products increase even more. After consultation with Boix Europe eventually a complete machine production line was implemented e.g Boix Pre-Feeders and stackers to automize the manufacturing process. The pre-feeders can be placed behind or next to the machine which create an extra buffer of around 1000 blanks (BE flute) and automatically fills the existing feeder of the machine. This eventually will lead to savings on labor costs.

From the central point in Heemskerks factory hall, the Boix Machinery are at the beginning of the boxes and crate transport system. The trays are formed, glued and transferred to the 30 production lines by means of the Boix machines and the Boix accessoires.

The future of EPR: Choose sustainable solutions that benefit our planet and your business The European Union is setting ambitious targets to increase sustainability efforts dramatically. By 2024 Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes will extend beyond electronic waste to all packaging for every member country. The recycling targets for plastic packaging will almost double from 22.5% to 50% by 2025. And by 2030, there is a target to recycle 65% of municipal waste and 75% of packaging waste.

Rising targets mean more rules The common goal of EPR schemes throughout Europe is to establish a circular economy. However, it is currently up to each country to place rules and regulations on the type of acceptable packaging and determine how fees are modulated. With lofty recycling deadlines approaching as early as 2025, legislation will need to take swift action on imposing even stricter EPR schemes. For brands, this means the total recyclability of their packaging will be key to avoid increasing fees.

Eco-design for the future Currently, only a few countries offer a recycling model that provides financial incentives for environmentally friendly design practices, known as eco-design. Countries like Belgium,

France, The Netherlands, and Spain are leading the way in how eco-modulation can incentivize a brand’s design process.

As part of this eco-design model, decoration is one of the critical factors determining the fee bracket of a product.

Unfortunately, labels on PET packaging are often overlooked during the design process. Approved decoration technology that features labels with wash-off adhesive or floatable sleeves can play an essential role in enabling recycling and provide a financial advantage to brands.

The Dutch example Let’s look at The Netherlands as a model for how EPR schemes can incentivize design for recycling through the differentiation of fees.

For a brand to put a product on the market in The Netherlands, they must pay a packaging fee. They rely on the Institute for Sustainable Packaging (KIDV) to provide knowledge and tools that help determine how their packaging choices comply with EPR criteria. With The Recycle Check online, they can estimate the rates they will need to pay to the Packaging Waste Fund (Afvalfonds Verpakkingen).

In the chart above, you can see the case of two PET packages, a 350-500ml beverage bottle, and a 500ml personal care bottle. Typically HPC packages are thicker hence they have a higher weight. However, in both instances, the packaging fee using an approved label, for example CleanFlake™, is ± 40% lower than using a standard label. Thus, CleanFlake is financially beneficial while also bringing more recycled PET back into the supply chain.

Prepare for stricter schemes Much progress is being made to bring circularity to packaging in Europe and the gap to achieve recycling targets is closing fast. When considering how to respond to the changes in EPR, eco-design is a logical way to start. Verstappen Advanced Packaging is in de jaren 80 bekend geworden met het blauwe champignonbakje. Inmiddels is het bedrijf uitgegroeid tot internationale speler in duurzame kunststof verpakkingsoplossingen voor hoofdzakelijk de AGF- en foodindustrie. Mieke en Paul Verstappen geven als 2e generatie leiding aan het familiebedrijf.

Ilpra Benelux zit graag dicht op de klant Ilpra is sterk in traysealers, dieptrekkers en fill-seal systemen voor de sectoren food, non-food en medical healthcare. Het begint echter niet met de keuze voor een verpakkingsmachine, maar met de keuze voor de juiste verpakking, zegt Luc Timmermans, directeur Ilpra Benelux.

Ilpra Benelux heeft een verpakkingstechnoloog in dienst die klanten neutraal adviseert over de beste verpakkingskeuze.

Timmermans: “Door eerst samen vast te stellen wat de juiste verpakking is, voorkom je problemen verderop in het proces.

Wij zijn daarom graag een serieuze gespreks- en adviespartner.

Wij kunnen verpakkingsmaterialen leveren van diverse producenten, sealfolie, trays, et cetera. De verpakkingsmachine is voor ons het middel om het doel te halen; een goede verpakking die voldoet aan de verwachting van de klant.”

Wereldwijd Het Italiaanse Ilpra SpA werd opgericht in 1955 met het doel ‘betrouwbare, toonaangevende verpakkingsmachines te ontwerpen en produceren.’ Dat is prima gelukt; inmiddels is het bedrijf beursgenoteerd en vinden de machines hun weg naar afnemers wereldwijd. Ilpra bouwt verpakkingsmachines van ‘klein tot heel groot en alles er tussenin’, zegt Timmermans. Ilpra bouwt seriematig zodat de prijzen aantrekkelijk blijven. Klantspecifieke wensen worden ingepast of toegevoegd. Hoe groter de machine, hoe meer maatwerk.

Levensduurvoorspelling In het oprichtingsjaar werd de eerste traysealer gebouwd, die opviel door zijn innovatieve techniek. In 1982 bouwde Ilpra de eerste MAP verpakkende traysealer machine. Het bedrijf staat aan de wieg van de hedendaagse standaard wat betreft topsealmachines. Dat innovatieve zit er nog steeds in, zegt Timmermans. “De meest recente modellen zijn helemaal toegespitst op industrie 4.0 en de integratie met internet of things. Online monitoring Online de toestand van machines monitoren doet Ilpra overigens al meer dan vijf jaar, vertelt Timmermans. “Het was een extra optie, nu is het een standaardoptie vanaf het model Speedy.” Deze traysealers staan bekend om hun flexibiliteit en het makkelijk omstellen naar andere trayformaten. “De Speedy is de Volkswagen Golf onder de verpakkingsmachines: iedereen probeert hem na te bouwen, maar niemand lukt het.”

Continuous movement Een andere ontwikkeling is wat Timmermans continuous movement noemt, waarbij niet meer de verpakkingsmachine maar de lopende band van de klant de snelheid bepaalt. “De vraag is niet langer hoeveel bakjes per minuut de machine moet afhandelen. De machine haalt in een vloeiende beweging het bakje uit de toevoerbanen van de klant, sealt hem en gaat weer door.”

Stilstand voorkomen Ilpra Benelux biedt klanten 24/7 service en onderhoud. “Wij leiden klanten op zodat ze zelf onderhoud kunnen doen, maar adviseren om twee keer per jaar onze monteur langs te laten komen voor nét dat beetje extra aandacht. Daarnaast zie je dat onderhoud wel eens een ondergeschoven kindje is in organisaties. Wij helpen dan graag om te voorkomen dat kleine storingen uitmonden in grotere problemen en mogelijke stilstand.”

Wij wel; de kennis is in huis, we hebben korte lijnen en de drang om de klant te helpen is overal in de organisatie aanwezig. We zijn beursgenoteerd, maar acteren nog altijd als een familiebedrijf.”

Pruimen “Wij zitten graag ‘dicht op de klant’. Iemand die belt om even snel een prijs op te vragen, is de sigaar, want die bestook ik met vragen. Wij willen namelijk wel iets leveren waar hij iets aan heeft. We beginnen daarom standaard met een grondige analyse van de klantvraag. Zodra we dat in beeld hebben, volgt een maatwerk voorstel.” Om die klantgerichte aanpak te illustreren, geeft Timmermans een voorbeeld van het ombouwen van een rond draaiende vul-sluitmachine die oorspronkelijk bedoeld is voor de zuivelindustrie. “Voor een co-packer hebben we die uitgerust met een multi-head weger om het verpakken van gedroogde pruimen mogelijk te maken. Een uitdaging, omdat die pruimen aan elkaar plakken en niet allemaal hetzelfde gewicht hebben. Dat was echt een heel leuk project en een bijzondere samenwerking.”

The lessons are always live, but are also recorded. This means that they can be reviewed by the students from the 24/7 NVC online learning environment at any time. All course material is also available in the 24/7 online learning environment for study before, during or after the lessons. The teaching language is in general (basic) English, whereby prospective business students can test themselves whether their language proficiency is sufficient.

All courses are taught by live tutors, supported by an NVC E-Course Technical Teaching Assistant (ETEA). The tutor answers all student questions during and, if desired, after the live sessions.

De lessen zijn altijd live, maar worden tevens opgenomen. Ze kunnen dus vanuit de 24/7 NVC online-leeromgeving altijd door de bedrijfsstudenten worden herbekeken. Ook al het lesmateriaal is in de 24/7 online-leeromgeving aanwezig ter bestudering vooraf, tijdens, dan wel na afloop van de lessen. De les-taal is in het algemeen (eenvoudig) Engels, waarbij bedrijfsstudenten zelf kunnen testen of hun taalbeheersing voldoende is.

Alle lessen worden gegeven door live docenten, ondersteund door een NVC E-Course Technische Onderwijsassistent (ETOA).

De docent beantwoordt tijdens én desgewenst na afloop van de live sessies alle studentvragen.

There are two types of live classes: Live Online and Live Hybrid.

In both cases, business students can participate from any location worldwide with an adequate internet connection (so no travel costs and no CO2 emissions). In case of the Live Hybrid classes, there is also a physical class location for the students.

So with Live Hybrid lessons, students can choose to be (partially) present at the location of the class.

Er zijn twee soorten live lessen: Live Online en Live Hybride. Er zijn diverse mogelijkheden in zakken. Het materiaal, dikte en eventuele coating, bedrukking of zelfs laminaat kunt u zelf bepalen. Wij zijn gespecialiseerd in het maken van verpakkingen die machinaal verwerkt / afgevuld worden.

DUURZAAM
