“Are we really here?” NVC chairwoman Christel Geerts asked the audience in her welcome address at the start of the NVC Night at the Planetarium, Thursday 30 November 2017 in the Planetarium Amsterdam.

‘The Night’ featured 19 showcases on Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and interactivity in packaging as well as special guest VRanky the walk-around robot, who made video footage of the evening in full 3D. The phenomenal evening showed how reality can be shifted in time, augmented, blended with other realities and even created from ‘virtually’ nothing.

Actually, you can still ‘virtually’ make a visit to the meeting as we have uploaded VRanky’s video to the NVC website (check out the NVC YouTube channel on the homepage).

‘The Night’ also gave us a lot of food for thought on our thinking about Reality in the field of business information. NVC (founded in 1953) is the association of companies addressing the activity of packaging throughout the supply chain of packaged products.

The NVC membership, joint innovation projects, information services and education programme stimulate the continuous improvement of packaging. For the sustained business success of our member companies and the association as a whole, it is essential that the information shared is reliable, trustworthy and ‘real’.

In a world where fake news, social media algorithms and Artificial Intelligence based news reporting and distribution are gaining momentum, a key task of NVC is to ensure that shared business information in packaging is carefully scrutinised.

The next annual General Meeting of Members will take place on 22 November 2018 in Amsterdam. The issues described above will be addressed in full depth during the Members-only part of this meeting. Consecutively the Award Ceremony of packaging innovation contest De Gouden Noot 2018 will take place, in the iconic A’DAM Tower (pictured on page 1). “Zijn we écht hier?” vroeg NVC-voorzitster Christel Geerts het publiek in haar welkomstwoord aan het begin van de NVC Night at the Planetarium, donderdag 30 november 2017 in het Planetarium Amsterdam.

‘The Night’ bracht 19 showcases over Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality en interactiviteit in verpakken, evenals speciale gast VRanky, de walk-around robot die videobeelden van de avond in volledig 3D maakte. De fenomenale avond liet zien hoe de werkelijkheid kan worden verschoven in de tijd, vergroot, vermengd met andere werkelijkheden en zelfs gecreëerd vanuit vrijwel (‘virtually’) niets. U kunt trouwens nu nog steeds ‘virtueel’ een bezoek brengen aan de bijeenkomst, omdat we de video van VRanky hebben geüpload naar de NVC-website (bekijk het NVC YouTube-kanaal op de startpagina).

‘The Night’ gaf ons ook veel stof tot nadenken over de Werkelijkheid op het gebied van zakelijke informatie. NVC (opgericht in 1953) is de vereniging van bedrijven die het belang erkennen van verpakken als activiteit binnen de gehele supply chain van verpakte producten. Het NVC lidmaatschap, de projecten, informatiediensten en de opleidingen stimuleren het continu verbeteren van het verpakken. Voor een duurzaam succes van de aangesloten bedrijven en de vereniging als geheel is het essentieel dat de gedeelde informatie betrouwbaar en ‘waarheidsgetrouw’ is.

In een wereld waar nepnieuws, social media algoritmen en op kunstmatige intelligentie gebaseerde nieuwsberichten toenemen, is het een belangrijke taak van NVC er voor te zorgen dat de bedrijfsinformatie in verpakken die we met elkaar delen zorgvuldig onder de loep wordt genomen.

De volgende jaarlijkse Algemene Ledenvergadering vindt plaats op 22 november 2018 in Amsterdam. De hierboven beschreven uitdagingen zullen centraal staan in het Members-only deel van de bijeenkomst. Aansluitend vindt de Prijsuitreiking van verpakkingsinnovatiewedstrijd De Gouden Noot 2018 plaats in de iconische A'DAM-toren (zie foto op pagina 1). Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and interactivity are rapidly shaping the future of packaging. A lot of amazing developments were shared 30 November 2017 during the unique NVC Night at the Planetarium, in the Open Access part of the 64th Annual NVC General Meeting of Members. Venue was the iconic Planetarium Amsterdam.

Augmented Reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment in which elements are ‘augmented’ by computer-generated or extracted real-world sensory input such as sound, video, graphics, haptics or GPS data. AR is related to a more general concept called computermediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer.

Augmented Reality enhances one’s current perception of reality while Virtual Reality (VR) replaces the real world with a simulated one.

The definition of interactivity also deserves careful attention in this context, as it combines the prefix ‘inter’ with the word ‘action’. The Oxford Dictionary defines interaction as ‘the process of two people or things working together and influencing each other’. For packaging, most likely the pack facilitates interaction between people, products and companies (‘actors’).

Veel verbazingwekkende ontwikkelingen werden 30 november 2017 gedeeld tijdens de unieke NVC Night at the Planetarium, in het openbare deel van de 64e jaarlijkse NVC Algemene Ledenvergadering. Locatie was het iconische Planetarium Amsterdam.

Augmented Reality (AR) is een live directe of indirecte weergave van een fysieke, werkelijk bestaande omgeving waarin elementen worden ‘aangevuld’ door computer gegenereerde of ergens anders vandaan gehaalde sensorische input zoals geluid, video, graphics, haptische gegevens of locatiedata. AR is gerelateerd aan een meer algemeen concept dat computer-gemedieerde realiteit wordt genoemd. Daarin wordt een weergave van de werkelijkheid door een computer gewijzigd en mogelijk zelfs verminderd in plaats van vergroot.

Augmented Reality verdiept iemands waarneming van de realiteit, terwijl Virtual Reality (VR) de échte wereld vervangt door een gesimuleerde werkelijkheid.

De definitie van interactiviteit verdient in deze context ook zorgvuldige aandacht. Deze combineert het voorvoegsel ‘inter’ met het woord ‘actie’. The Oxford Dictionary definieert interactie als ‘het proces van twee mensen of dingen die samenwerken en

How are AR, VR and interactivity affecting the packaging world at this moment? Consumer behaviour is now being influenced via smartphone-apps, packaged product design is exploring totally new dimensions and even the remotest packaging equipment can now be supervised with the help of VR by a central, highly qualified and 24/7 operational service and maintenance department. Participants of the NVC Night at the Planetarium on 30 November 2017 could visit, experience and enjoy a total of 19 amazing showcases, each of these now available on the market. At NVC we make a distinction between B2B (Business-toBusiness) and B2C (Business-to-Consumer) applications in AR, VR and interactive packaging.

The B2B field concerns the design process of new packages or packaging manufacturing operations by industry. It can also concern the improvement of the service and maintenance of existing equipment and related operations. The layout of a new packaging line can be demonstrated in the factory before even starting to create the first equipment module in the physical world. On the other hand, the knowledge and effectiveness of field engineers all over the world can be increased by providing them with augmented information on the machinery

Hoe beïnvloeden AR, VR en interactiviteit de verpakkingswereld op dit moment? Het consumentengedrag wordt beïnvloed door smartphone-apps, het design van verpakte producten betreedt totaal nieuwe dimensies en zelfs de meest afgelegen verpakkingsmachines kunnen nu met behulp van VR op afstand worden bewaakt door een centrale, hooggekwalificeerde en 24/7 operationele service- en onderhoudsafdeling. Deelnemers aan de NVC Night at the Planetarium op 30 november 2017 konden in totaal 19 verbazingwekkende showcases bezoeken en ervaren, die allemaal op de markt zijn. Bij NVC maken we een onderscheid tussen B2B (Business-toBusiness) en B2C (Business-to-Consumer) toepassingen in AR, VR en interactieve verpakkingen.

Het B2B-veld betreft het ontwerpproces van nieuwe verpakkingen of verpakkingsprocessen door de industrie. Ook kan het gaan om de verbetering van de service en het onderhoud van bestaande apparatuur en aanverwante activiteiten. De lay-out van een nieuwe verpakkingslijn kan in de fabriek worden uitge-

they are servicing, either supplied real-time by the machine or via a human assistant at the central know-how hub in the company.

Especially exciting in the B2B category is the use of AR and VR in education and training. Students can be submerged in worlds and situations that would be impossible to create in reality in the conventional classroom. The NVC Live Online Learning courses and workshops are a fine example of this.

B2C focuses on the end-user of the packaged product. This can be the Chinese Alibaba customer who is instantly buying a dress in Augmented Reality with her smartphone as she is watching a fashion show streamed to that same phone. Another application would be the patient who is reminded by his package that he should take his anti-Alzheimer medicine.

We see two areas that deserve attention, one more technological and the other more in the personal domain.

Regarding the technology, the implementation of AR, VR and interactivity in the packs should not make the manufacturing process too complicated. That not only refers to the frontend part of creating the packs and the packaged products, but also to the backend of responsibly taking care of the emptied packs.

Adding RFID electronics to throw-away glass whisky bottles could be considered to be an example of the last case.

Privacy and data safety is the other issue that deserves full attention. Packaging is the activity of temporarily integrating an external function and a product to enable the use of the product. External functions do not necessarily have to be physical. ‘Augmenting’ a user-experience is therefore fully in line with the definition. New elements are the real-time and two-way functionality of the interaction. This should be primarily to the benefit of the two interacting ‘actors’, however the third party providing the platform for the interaction also plays a role. If the interaction process is not safeguarded, the whole integrity and reliability of packaging may be compromised.

Anderzijds kunnen kennis en effectiviteit van bijvoorbeeld field engineers over de hele wereld worden vergroot door hen te voorzien van uitgebreide informatie over de machine die ze bedienen, ofwel real-time geleverd door de machine of via een menselijke assistent bij de servicecentrale van het bedrijf.

Bijzonder inspirerend in de B2B-categorie is het gebruik van AR en VR in onderwijs en training. Studenten kunnen worden ondergedompeld in werelden en situaties die in werkelijkheid niet eens in de conventionele klas kunnen worden gecreëerd. De NVC Live Online Learning cursussen en workshops zijn hiervan een goed voorbeeld.

B2C richt zich op de eindgebruiker van het verpakte product. Dit kan de Chinese Alibaba-klant zijn die meteen een jurk koopt in Augmented Reality met haar smartphone terwijl ze een modeshow bekijkt die naar diezelfde telefoon wordt gestreamd. Een andere toepassing is de patiënt die er via zijn verpakking aan wordt herinnerd zijn anti-Alzheimer-medicijn te nemen.

We zien twee aandachtsgebieden voor de toekomst, het een meer technologisch en het ander meer in het persoonlijke domein.

Wat de technologie betreft, moet de implementatie van AR, VR en interactiviteit in verpakkingen het productieproces niet te ingewikkeld maken. Daarbij gaat het niet alleen om het frontend gedeelte van het produceren van de verpakkingen en verpakte producten, maar ook om het back-end: het op verantwoorde wijze kunnen omgaan met de geleegde verpakkingen. Het toevoegen van RFID-elektronica aan glazen whiskyflessen zou kunnen worden beschouwd als een voorbeeld van het laatste.

Privacy en dataveiligheid is de andere kwestie die volledige aandacht verdient. Verpakken is de activiteit van het tijdelijk integreren van een externe functie en een product om het gebruik van het product mogelijk te maken. Externe functies hoeven niet noodzakelijk fysiek te zijn en ‘augmenting’ een gebruikerservaring is daarom volledig in lijn met de definitie. Nieuwe elementen in de interactie zijn echter het real-time karakter en de tweerichtings-functionaliteit. Die moeten in de eerste plaats ten goede komen aan de twee inter-actoren. De derde partij, die het platform voor de interactie faciliteert, speelt echter ook een rol. Als de veiligheid van de interactie niet verzekerd is, kunnen de integriteit en de betrouwbaarheid van het verpakken in het gedrang komen.

FlexLink “Material Flow Controller” in een snelle veranderende digitale wereld.

Martin Oberberger, de General Manager van FlexLink Software Engineering in Rosenheim Duitsland heeft een artikel geschreven over FlexLink’s Material Flow Controller (verder aangeduid als MFC) in productieprocessen.

We leven in een tijdsgewricht waar doorlooptijden en veranderingen in bijna alle aspecten van ons leven steeds korter worden.

De hoofdzaak voor deze veranderingen zijn de enorme technologische sprongen die steeds volledig nieuwe mogelijkheden en kansen bieden. FlexLink ziet een noodzaak om haar producten en diensten voortdurend te innoveren en met deze snelle ontwikkelingen bij te blijven.

Industrie 4.0 of “Smart Industry” zoals wij dat in Nederland noemen is de kern die deze snelle ontwikkelingen aanjaagt. Dit onderwerp verplicht organisaties na te denken hoe om te gaan met de kansen die Smart Industrie biedt.

Producerende industrieën zowel als bedrijven die oplossingen voor deze industrieën ontwikkelen worden geconfronteerd met enorme uitdagingen door deze digitale veranderingen. Veelal

wordt hier door leveranciers niet vaak over gesproken terwijl er wel vooruitgang wordt geboekt met betrekking tot Industrie 4.0.

Dit is ook het geval bij MFC. Deze software oplossingen die al reeds vele jaren zijn geïmplementeerd, worden ook beïnvloed door veranderingen door de digitale transformatie. Om het doel van intelligent produceren (Smart Manufacuring) te bereiken zijn nieuwe gezichtspunten ontstaan waarbij deze software oplossingen in kunnen bijdragen.

FlexLink ‘s MFC is een software gebaseerd op een Microsoft system met een Microsoft SQL Database.

Deze software is gemaakt om een brug te slaan tussen het PLC niveau (lijnbesturing) en het MES/ERP systeem. FlexLink ’s MFC software wordt gebruikt bij lijnen die een hoge variëteit van de te produceren goederen voortbrengen, “track and trace” noodzakelijk is, productafhankelijke bewerkingen en routing bewaard moeten blijven zoals bijv. de uiterste houdbaarheid datum.

Ook als een complexe communicatie met een klantsysteem nodig is (bijv. MES of ERP systeem) gebruikt FlexLink haar MFC software. Naast deze mogelijkheden zien we ook een ontwikkeling dat in het bijzonder voedingsmiddelen producerende bedrij-

ven bezig zijn om op klantenwens producten te maken en die via een online portal direct aan de consument te verkopen en daarmee de retailers te omzeilen. Klanten kunnen dan via een portal hun product samenstellen waarbij als voorbeeld gedacht kan worden aan specifieke koffie blends of samenstelling van vruchtenyoghurts. Deze “produce to order” mogelijkheid kan door inzet van onze MFC gerealiseerd worden. Uieraard dienen daarvoor de vulmachines voor het primaire product aangepast te zijn.

MFC software oplossingen hebben complete productieprocessen beheerd gedurende de laatste 20 jaar en zijn min of meer een MES(s) en voldoen niet aan de “Smart Factory” filosofie.

FlexLink als Smart Factory Expert is al een tijd geleden bewust van deze 4de industriële revolutie en heeft een Smart Factory MFC ontwikkeld volledig in overeenstemming met de eisen die Industrie 4.0 stelt. FlexLink’s MFC is het kern element voor Smart Factory oplossingen en ondersteunt haar klanten met de digitale transitie.

MFC is verantwoordelijk voor de optimale prestatie van productie orders, van data handling, data capturing en de coördinatie van materiaal stromen in de productie. Deze modulaire software wordt gebruikt bij individuele productielijnen maar heeft geen betrekking op de gehele productie. Individuele productielijnen zijn het resultaat en kunnen autonoom en flexibel produceren.

Deze implementatie werkt uitstekend door het balanceren tussen standaardisatie en de flexibiliteit van de software. Aan de ene kant is het absoluut noodzakelijk dat de interfaces van en tussen machines gestandaardiseerd zijn zodat de programmatuur het mogelijk maakt om data uit te wisselen, terwijl aan de andere kant het ook kan voorkomen om systemen te integreren die door technische redenen (nog) niet aan die eisen kunnen voldoen. Er is in elk geval een behoefte aan standaardisatie en flexibiliteit.

MFC accepteert werk opdrachten van het ERP system, van upstream systemen of meer algemeen van standaard productie communicatie systemen om daarmee een snelle en zorgeloze implementatie mogelijk te maken. MFC distilleert uit werk opdrachten belangrijke elementen voor het operationele gebied en voert de opdrachten in volgorde uit. Een rapport voor de uitgevoerde opdracht elementen wordt direct teruggekoppeld aan het ERP systeem. De bijgewerkte opdracht wordt doorgegeven aan de volgende productiestap of wordt bijwerkt bij het product zelf wanneer er bijv. een met RFID uitgeruste productdrager wordt gebruikt.

Het system is voorzien van een “track and trace” mogelijkheid om daarmee alle relevante data te kunnen reconstrueren over hoe en wanneer het product is vervaardigd. Deze data kan worden gecompileerd en bewaard in “cloud” wanneer de klant dat wenst.

Als toevoeging is het belangrijk voor MFC om te reageren op de momentane status van de productielijn. Als een productiestap langer duurt of als een deel van de productielijn niet

beschikbaar is door allerlei oorzaken, moet de materiaalstroom opnieuw gecoördineerd worden. Geïntegreerde of aangrenzende machines moeten betrokken worden in deze coördinatie.

Tijd is geld en dit heeft in het bijzonder betrekking op de implementatie van dergelijke systemen en de integratie met bijv.

MES/ERP systemen. FlexLink’s MFC software is ontworpen om gebruikt te maken van onze simulatie applicatie. Hiermee kunnen alle vitale functies worden gevalideerd voor de daadwerkelijke implementatie en zwakke punten tijdens deze procedure worden opgelost. De installatietijd wordt daarmee drastisch verkort.

Het is duidelijk dat dit een groot voordeel met zich meebrengt en productie downtime tot een minimum wordt beperkt als dit op bestaande lijnen wordt geïmplementeerd.

Bij gebruik van MFC is de digitale tweeling van de operator realiteit geworden. De systeem operator werkt samen met zijn digitale tweeling en aanpassingen en optimalisaties worden door FlexLink uitgevoerd. Als de testen succesvol zijn gebleken wordt de software gekopieerd naar de werkelijke situatie en kan dan in bedrijf worden gesteld. Wij kunnen dit zelfs als een “remote service” doen en is eveneens een bijkomend voordeel om zo tijd en geld te besparen.

Het is duidelijk dat het gebruik van MFC risico’s minimaliseert en kosten besparend is.

Packaging is the temporary integration of an external function and a product to enable the use of the product. Every second, the world packs more than 100,000 products, with the food sector accounting for roughly two-thirds of the packaging market. In food, we often talk about ‘consumption’ instead of ‘use’.

Although it sometimes seems to be forgotten by both industry and retail as debates on cost reductions, brand image and market shares rage on, the basic reason for food packaging to exist is to help people consume the right amount and quality of food. Reaching that goal is not easy at all. In 2014, nearly 2 billion adults worldwide were overweight, while 500 million were underweight. More than 600 million adults were obese, with all the negative health effects (such as diabetes). In the same year forty million children under five were overweight, 150 million had too low a growth and 50 million were too skinny for their age. So the food packaging community struggles with a large ‘overshoot’ and ‘undershoot’ at the same time. That is the case in a world where a stunning amount of food is also wasted in the entire supply chain, including the consumer’s home.

Verpakken is het tijdelijk integreren van een externe functie en een product om het gebruik van het product mogelijk te maken. Elke seconde verpakt de wereld meer dan 100.000 producten, waarbij de voedingssector ongeveer twee derde van de verpakkingsmarkt voor zijn rekening neemt. In voeding praten we veelal over ‘consumptie’ in plaats van ‘gebruik’.

Zowel industrie als retail lijken het soms te vergeten door de discussies over kostenbesparingen, merkimago en marktaandelen, maar de belangrijkste reden voor het bestaan van voedselverpakkingen is mensen te helpen de juiste hoeveelheid en kwaliteit voedsel te nuttigen. Deze doelstelling werkelijk realiseren is helemaal niet makkelijk. In 2014 hadden bijna 2 miljard volwassenen wereldwijd overgewicht, terwijl er 500 miljoen juist ondervoed waren. Meer dan 600 miljoen volwassenen waren zwaarlijvig, met alle negatieve gevolgen van dien voor hun gezondheid (zoals diabetes). In hetzelfde jaar hadden veertig miljoen kinderen onder de vijf jaar overgewicht, 150 miljoen leden onder een te lage groei en 50 miljoen waren te mager voor hun leeftijd. De voedselverpakkingswereld worstelt dus tegelijkertijd met een grote ‘overshoot’ en een ‘undershoot’. Dit is het

Three key areas were identified where better, responsible packaging could make a significant difference. These are overconsumption (too much food, resulting in overweight and related illnesses and discomforts), dysfunctional consumption (‘mal -nutrition’, i.e. sufficient caloric intake as such, but not with the right nutrients) and undernutrition (the lack of adequate food supply due to poverty, war, natural disasters and/or insufficient production and/or waste).

Three packaging functions turned out to be the most promising: the packaging dimensions (in connection with the portion size for example), the on-pack communication (informing the consumer and actually also facilitating feedback by the consumer

to the food supplier or retailer) and new or optimised packaging and logistic technologies (for example providing better protection in humid environments or at high temperatures).

With these insights as a basis, we have now started promoting and supporting national and international projects, strengthening training for food packaging worldwide and stimulating extra packaging innovation. A project we promote is the European REFRESH project: 26 partners from 12 European countries and China work to halve the food waste per capita at retail and consumer level and reduce food loss along production and supply chains. The USA ReFED project also deserves attention.

ReFED is committed to reducing food waste in the United States.

The United States spends $ 200 billion a year on producing, processing, transporting and disposing of food that is never eaten.

ReFED aims to reduce this food waste by 50% by 2030.

In terms of training, as NVC we now offer the Live Online Course Food Packaging worldwide. ‘Online’ has the advantage that the student does not have to travel. ‘Live’ guarantees a truly effective learning environment with excellent results. The teaching

Met deze inzichten als basis zijn we nu begonnen met het promoten en ondersteunen van nationale en internationale projecten, het versterken van training voor voedselverpakken wereldwijd en het stimuleren van extra verpakkingsinnovatie.

Een project dat we promoten is het Europese REFRESH-project; 26 partners uit 12 Europese landen en China zijn aan het werk om de voedselverspilling per hoofd van de bevolking te halveren op retail- en consumentenniveau en het voedselverlies in de productie- en toeleveringsketens te verminderen. Het ReFEDproject in de VS verdient ook aandacht. ReFED zet zich in voor het verminderen van voedselverspilling in de Verenigde Staten.

De Verenigde Staten geeft elk jaar $ 200 miljard uit aan het produceren, verwerken, vervoeren en afvoeren van voedsel dat nooit wordt gegeten. ReFED streeft ernaar dit voedselverlies tegen 2030 met 50% te verminderen.

Op het gebied van training bieden we nu de NVC Live Online Course Food Packaging wereldwijd aan. ‘Online’ heeft als voordeel dat de student niet hoeft reizen. ‘Live’ garandeert een werkelijk effectieve leeromgeving met uitstekende resultaten.

BeeMagicTrayÂŽ (BMT) A revolutionary new packaging format

The consumer increasingly demands an environmentally friendly solution. Dampack International has succeeded in developing a new patented innovative tray which meets the packaging guidelines of the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority).

Traditional absorbers are no longer used for our BeeMagicTray for Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), which enables us to issue a Declaration of Compliance for our BeeMagicTray.

The packaged product is separated from its moisture, resulting in reduced acidification. The entire concept is 100% mono, making it fully recyclable, unlike the tray with absorber which has to be separated independently.

Since the perforated film lifts the product from the base, the used gas mixture also comes into contact with the underside of the product. This increases circulation around the product, resulting in a considerably better bacterial count on the expiry date. The fact that no absorption materials are used which have a suction effect results in less moisture loss.

The BeeMagic Tray uses a monoperforated film placed above the capillary honeycomb structure base. This structure base is most efficient for moisture absorption. The perforated film ensures less moisture loss since no absorption materials are used which have a suction effect on the packaged product.

Attention is required when using absorbent inserts (meat pads)

Thanks to the perforated film, the gas mixture also comes into direct contact with the underside of, for example the packaged product. This also creates optimal gas distribution, which inhibits the growth of bacteria and has a positive effect on the shelf life, resulting in a considerably better bacterial count on the expiry date. There is also less pigmentation of the packaged product. In addition, through the perforated support film, no imprint of the base structure is visible in the packaged product.

The FAVV found that the use of some absorbent inserts for e.g. meat packaging releases fibres from the cut side of the contact material which end up in the food. This is specifically the case for the type of sheets on a roll, the sides of which are not sealed. This is not in accordance with legislation and therefore cannot be accepted. Also in the EFSA’s evaluation of these active materials, it was stated that the mechanical release of fibres must be excluded (source: EFSA Journal 2013; 11(4):3154.

Agility and ageing are words often used in business language. Agility refers to the capability of a company to rapidly change or adapt in response to changes in the market. Agility is generally considered to be a positive factor for the competitiveness of companies and for the people that work there. Ageing is often defined as the process of becoming older and (therefore) less healthy or efficient. As society changes more rapidly than ever, companies must be agile in their response to survive and prosper.

The word ageing mostly evokes negative associations; ageing is associated with an increase in illness, slowness and malfunctioning. Whether these negative associations are really justified can be disputed. Who could be against living a longer life? How could the world population stabilise peacefully in the 21st century after the phenomenal tenfold increase since the 19th century, without ageing?

For society as a whole, ageing results in a shift in the age distribution. The population ‘pyramid’ morphs into a ‘vase’ with

Agility verwijst naar het vermogen van een bedrijf om snel te veranderen of zich aan te passen als reactie op veranderingen in de markt. Agility wordt over het algemeen beschouwd als een positieve factor voor het concurrentievermogen van bedrijven en voor de mensen die er werken.

Veroudering wordt vaak gedefinieerd als het proces van ouder worden en (daarom) minder gezond of efficiënt. Nu de samenleving sneller dan ooit verandert, moeten bedrijven wendbaar zijn om te overleven en goed te kunnen blijven draaien.

Het woord veroudering roept meestal negatieve associaties op; ouder worden wordt geassocieerd met een toename van ziekte, traagheid en slecht functioneren. Of deze negatieve associaties echt gerechtvaardigd zijn, valt te betwisten. Wie kan er tegen zijn dat we langer leven? Hoe kan de wereldbevolking zich vreedzaam stabiliseren in de 21e eeuw na de fenomenale vertienvoudiging vanaf de 19e eeuw, zonder dat er veroudering optreedt?

Wendy Wijbrandts (Abbott Healthcare Products BV) co-signs her diploma during the graduation ceremony 2017 for the diploma NVC Packaging Professional I and II. On 1 January 2018 there were 628 qualified professionals registered in the Register of NVC Packaging Professionals. relatively few younger people and relatively more elderly people around. The same is true for the effect of ageing on the workforce: the percentage of workers in the 50-plus age category is increasing, the youngsters are becoming relatively scarce.

At NVC we follow and analyse the demographic workforce trends continuously. Prime aim is to raise the awareness within businesses globally that ageing and agility must be addressed in conjunction to successfully cope with the many packaging challenges the world faces in the decades to come. Secondly, we try to develop the right tools for supporting businesses worldwide in maintaining agility through an adequately educated and trained, well-motivated workforce.

Basically the world (industry, retail, government and third parties like research institutes) needs a sufficient quantity of workers with the right skills, knowledge and attitudes in relation to packaging. Starting from the paradigm ‘better approximately right than exactly wrong’, we estimate that there is a global industry backbone of around 100,000 first-tier professionals (packaging engineers, packaging technologists, packaging line supervisors, managers with responsibility for the manufacturing of packaged products or production of packaging materials, …).

In addition to this backbone, there may be at least ten times as many workers involved in handling packaged products, especially in retail and logistics and agriculture (packing primary produce).

This work is characterised by low-skilled labour that can be taught quickly. It also may run the risk of being automated.

The supply of low-skilled labour worldwide may be quite large.

Where local shortages occur, the work is often transferred to places where low-skilled workers are abundant. Conversely, lowskilled immigrants may fill in the work in places where shortages exist.

Taking a fifty year working life (20-70 years of age) as ‘the new normal’, a stable backbone would need 2,000 new highly qualified professionals each year as 2,000 experienced professionals would retire annually. The calculus immediately shows the pressing challenge behind all this: how to keep the 96,000 professionals in the ‘centre’ of the workforce agile during their working life.

The first formal education is often considered to be the key starting point for further development. The better the basis created before - let’s say - 25 years of age, the better the potential for further learning later in the career. Depending on the age, different sorts of knowledge may be acquired. New and existing knowledge and skills are blended in with a growing base of experiences in successes and failures. The goal should be to align the interests of the business with those of the employeeprofessional, resulting in a truly sustainable workplace.

The NVC education and training activities are meant to support these developments. Central to the thinking is the functional

Alleen zo kunnen we de vele verpakkingsuitdagingen succesvol aanpakken waarmee de wereld de komende decennia geconfronteerd zal worden. Ten tweede proberen we de juiste tools te ontwikkelen voor het ondersteunen van bedrijven over de hele wereld bij het behouden van hun agility door middel van adequaat opgeleid en getraind, goed gemotiveerd personeel.

De wereld (industrie, detailhandel, overheid en derden zoals onderzoeksinstituten) heeft behoefte aan voldoende werknemers met de juiste vaardigheden, kennis en attitudes met betrekking tot verpakken. Vanuit het gezegde ‘beter ongeveer goed dan precies fout’, schatten we in, dat er een wereldwijde ruggengraat is van ongeveer 100.000 eerstelijns professionals (verpakkingsingenieurs, verpakkingstechnologen, verpakkingslijn supervisors, managers die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de productie van verpakte producten of productie van verpakkingsmaterialen, ...).

In aanvulling op deze ruggengraat, zijn er minstens tien keer zoveel werknemers betrokken bij de handling van verpakte producten, vooral in de detailhandel, de logistiek en de landbouw (het verpakken van primaire producten). Dit werk wordt gekenmerkt door laaggeschoolde arbeid die snel kan worden aangeleerd en loopt ook het risico te worden geautomatiseerd.

Het aanbod van laaggeschoolde arbeidskrachten lijkt wereldwijd behoorlijk groot te zijn. Waar lokale tekorten voorkomen, wordt het werk vaak overgebracht naar plaatsen waar laaggeschoolde werknemers in overvloed aanwezig zijn. Omgekeerd kunnen laaggeschoolde immigranten het werk invullen op plaatsen waar tekorten bestaan.

Nemen we als vertrekpunt een vijftigjarig beroepsleven (20-70 jaar) als ‘het nieuwe normaal’, dan zouden voor een stabiele ruggengraat elk jaar 2000 nieuwe hooggekwalificeerde professionals nodig zijn, aangezien er 2000 ervaren professionals elk jaar met pensioen zouden gaan. De rekensom toont onmiddellijk de dringende uitdaging achter dit alles: hoe de 96.000 professionals in het ‘centrum’ van het personeel ‘agile’ te houden tijdens hun beroepsleven.

Het eerste formele onderwijs wordt vaak beschouwd als het belangrijkste startpunt voor verdere ontwikkeling. Hoe beter de basis die in het begin - laten we zeggen tot het 25e levensjaar –

Subsequently, an answer is given to the question how to fill the position with the right, i.e. agile, worker. The required functional profile should be matched with the appropriate, agile worker.

Hiring external people can be expensive, may alienate or demoralise the existing staff and creates the risk of unexpected culture clashes. Additional education or training of the existing staff is therefore the first choice to consider. This is especially true in the three scenarios, characterised by NVC as the ‘rolling pathway’, the 'escalator' and the ‘step-over’.

The rolling pathway is applicable when the functional profile stays the same, but the underlying technologies and methodologies are changing. An example is packaging print supervisor. The escalator is used when the professional is moving up in the organisation and henceforth a deeper and broader understanding of a particular area is required. This usually coincides with improved communication and managerial skills to be learned. An example is sales director at a packaging manufacturer, with the responsibility to manage a range of sales agents and account managers.

The step-over model is used when a person is making a horizontal shift to another functional profile. The profile may already exist but it can also be totally new. The task of the professional may then be to create his or her own function profile. An example is a business development manager, looking for applications of a specific potential packaging innovation.

Centraal in het denken staat het functieprofiel van een specifieke baan, met een beschrijving van de taken, verantwoordelijkheden en bevoegdheden in de organisatie. Het inhuren van externe mensen kan duur zijn, kan het bestaande personeel afstoten of demoraliseren en schept het risico van onverwachte cultuurconflicten. Aanvullend opleiden of trainen van het bestaande personeel is daarom de eerste keuze om te overwegen. Dit geldt met name in de drie scenario’s, gekenmerkt door NVC als het ‘rollend trottoir’, de ‘roltrap’ en de ‘overstap’.

Het rollend trottoir is van toepassing wanneer het functieprofiel hetzelfde blijft, maar de onderliggende technologieën en methodologieën veranderen. Een voorbeeld is verpakkingsdruk supervisor.

De roltrap wordt gebruikt wanneer de professional ‘omhoog gaat’ in de organisatie, waarbij veelal een dieper en breder begrip van een bepaald gebied is vereist. Meestal moeten in zo’n geval ook extra communicatie- en managementvaardigheden worden geleerd. Een voorbeeld is verkoopdirecteur bij een verpakkingsfabrikant, met de verantwoordelijkheid een aantal sales- en accountmanagers aan te sturen.

Het overstapmodel wordt gebruikt wanneer een persoon een horizontale stap naar een ander functieprofiel maakt. Het profiel bestaat misschien al, maar het kan ook helemaal nieuw zijn.

De taak van de professional kan hier dus zelfs bestaan uit het creëren van het eigen functieprofiel. Een voorbeeld is een business development manager op zoek naar toepassingen voor een specifieke potentiële verpakkingsinnovatie.

‘Wij zorgen ervoor dat een brand gaat leven’ “Een marketeer moet zich niet bezighouden met – bijvoorbeeld – het controleren van de drukbestanden van verpakkingen”, zegt Freek de Gier van Brand Quadergy. “Hij moet vooral creatief bezig zijn met zijn brand. Proces verbeteren, proces management, IT-oplossingen; alles rond print management regelen wij met onze vier bedrijven: Promez, Designboard, DSN en TGS.” Vier bedrijven, bijna vierhonderd medewerkers in Europa, een vestiging in Singapore en partnerships in China en India. En een historie die teruggaat tot 1946, dat is Brand Quadergy. “We werken heel hard, hebben prachtige klanten en maken mooie dingen die iedereen kent, maar toch zijn we voor velen de grote onbekende”, lacht manager New Business De Gier.

Efficiënt en effectief ontzorgen Promez houdt zich bezig met het analyseren en verbeteren van de marcom-operatie van opdrachtgevers. Bij DesignBoard werken de creatieve ontwerpers. DSN managet het print-productieproces voor klanten en TGS levert de benodigde IT-oplossingen.

Brand owners kunnen ervoor kiezen één activiteit onder te brengen, of de hele keten, zegt De Gier. “Punt is dat de vier bedrijven elkaar versterken en dat we zo de klant efficiënt en effectief ontzorgen.”

Brand consistency Print Management Agency DSN zorgt ervoor dat de brand owner zich kan concentreren op zijn kerntaken. DSN is de spin in het web en het centrale aanspreekpunt, dat is efficiënt en bespaart dus tijd en geld. “Wij zorgen ook voor brand consistency. Dat wil

zeggen dat wij zorgen voor consistente kleuren en een uniforme uitstraling ongeacht de drager en de gebruikte druktechniek.”

Online databank Klanten en agency hebben toegang tot een voor de klant gecreeerde ‘eigen’ online databank met alle data van een product, zoals de technische tekening, het artwork of de beelden. “Wij beheren dat en zorgen dat dit altijd actueel is. Zo heeft iedereen die geautoriseerd is altijd de laatste versie tot zijn beschikking.”

In het systeem kunnen alle betrokken direct online hun aanpassingen doorvoeren. Historische gegevens worden bewaard en autorisatie vastgelegd. Is het bestand klaar, dan kan het rechtstreeks naar de drukker.

Flexibiliteit voor de klant Het productieproces is gestandaardiseerd en voor alle brands hetzelfde, legt De Gier uit. Het zorgt voor minder fouten en een snellere time-to-market. “Maar het geeft onze klanten ook flexibiliteit. Als er sprake is van verschillende brands kunnen medewerkers intern eenvoudig switchen, omdat alles op dezelfde manier verloopt.”

Voorspelbaar eindresultaat DSN beschikt over een database met het profiel van circa duizend verschillende drukkers. “Wij kennen al hun specs en als we om welke reden dan ook moeten switchen, kunnen we direct de juiste data aanleveren. We weten ook welke resultaten er uit welke machine komen. Daardoor kunnen wij zelf al een proef maken conform het uiteindelijke resultaat. Zo weet de klant wat hij kan verwachten. En weet de drukker wat hij moet maken. Wij garanderen dat het voortraject honderd procent juist is. Hiermee wordt het eindresultaat voorspelbaar.” De vier bedrijven leveren ook ondersteunende diensten, zoals design (bijvoorbeeld voor Point of Sale materialen) en fotografie.

“Ik ben positief verbaasd hierover. Het betekent dat de time-tomarket verkort, dat personaliseren eenvoudiger wordt en dat je kleinere series kunt maken. Het betekent ook dat we goed moeten uitzoeken wie wat kan. Het gaat om andere dragers, andere toner. Dat moet je verrekte goed weten voordat je eraan begint.

Grote namen Het bedrijf rekent veel grote namen tot zijn klantenkring, waaronder Lidl, Mars, Philips en Friesland Campina. Er zijn verschillende teams die volledig voor één opdrachtgever werken, zoals voor de Bonus-folder van Albert Heijn. Bij andere opdrachtgevers heeft DSN medewerkers gedetacheerd. “En ook veel fabrikanten van private labels hebben hun print management aan ons uitbesteed. Wij doen bijvoorbeeld alles voor het huismerk van Plus.”

Maar het is niet allemaal ‘groot’; ook voor kleinere bedrijven is print management een uitkomst, legt De Gier uit. “Je ziet vaak

Design is the creation of a plan, method or mutual agreement for the construction of an object, system or measurable human interaction. It appears that today’s design community is missing opportunities in improving the quality of life for many as far as packaging is concerned. Projecting key elements of packaging thinking on to the world of design may be a valuable solution for both disciplines. This is called Design for Intended Use (DIU) and it brings benefits in food, pharma, e-commerce and many other areas of future interest.

Design has many disciplines, addressing different fields and actually even referring to things (the design of something) or to the process of creation. In the second category, ‘meta-design’ addresses the methods or processes of designing. As a result ‘packaging design’ may be a noun referring to the packages created, but can also be a verb for the process of inventing, developing or manufacturing packages and packaged products.

Anno 2018 a plethora of packaging design grammar is used.

There is graphic design, structural design, branding design, accessible design, patient friendly design, engineering design, circular design, creative (!) design, user centred design, design for sustainability, intuitive design, child safe design and more.

All these concepts have in common that they project the design thinking on the world of packaging. However careful analysis shows, that such an approach might not be the best way to solve the packaging design challenges of the future. Actually, NVC feels that it might be a good thing to project key elements of packaging thinking on to the world of design. We call this Design for Intended Use (DIU).

Basic to DIU is the definition of packaging as coined by NVC in the 1990’s. Packaging is the activity of temporarily integrating an external function and a product to enable the use of the product. The world ‘does it’ approximately 100,000 times per second. Inherent to packaging is the unpacking of the product by the user and henceforth the creation of an emptied pack. The central goal is clearly the appropriate use of the packaged product by the user. Ideally, the packaging should prevent the ab-use (wrong use of the contents by the intended user) or the mis-use (the ‘right’ use of the contents, however by somebody else than the intended user). Design for Intended Use is the packaging design process and outcome that unambiguously identifies and ensures the intended use of the packaged product by the intended user.

Knowledge and methodology development in DIU is deemed to be very important for several reasons. First and foremost, explicit thinking on the use of the packaged product is basic to the very sustained existence of packaging as an activity. This is

In die tweede categorie gaat ‘meta-design’ zelfs over de methoden of processen van het ontwerpen. Packaging design kan aldus betrekking hebben op verpakkingen, maar ook een werkwoord zijn voor het proces van het bedenken, ontwikkelen of produceren van verpakkingen en verpakte producten. Anno 2018 wordt een overvloed aan verpakkingsdesign terminologie gebruikt. Er is grafisch design, structureel design, branding design, toegankelijk design, patiëntvriendelijk design, technisch design, circulair design, creatief (!) design, gebruikersgericht design, duurzaam design, intuïtief design, kindveilig design en zo meer.

Al deze concepten hebben gemeen dat ze het design-denken op de verpakkingswereld projecteren. Uit zorgvuldige analyse blijkt echter dat een dergelijke aanpak misschien niet de beste manier is om de verpakkingsontwerp-uitdagingen van de toekomst op te lossen. NVC is van mening dat het misschien een goede zaak is elementen van het verpakkingsdenken juist toe te passen in de wereld van design. We noemen dit Design for Intended Use (DIU).

Aan de basis van DIU ligt de definitie van verpakking zoals geformuleerd door NVC in de negentiger jaren van de vorige eeuw.

Verpakken is de activiteit van het tijdelijk integreren van een externe functie en een product om het gebruik van het product mogelijk te maken. De wereld ‘doet het’ ongeveer 100.000 keer per seconde. Inherent aan verpakken is het uitpakken van het product door de gebruiker en daarmee het ontstaan van een geleegde verpakking. Het centrale doel is duidelijk: het juiste gebruik van het verpakte product door de gebruiker. Idealiter zou de verpakking wan-gebruik (verkeerd gebruik van de inhoud door de beoogde gebruiker) of oneigenlijk gebruik (correct gebruik van de inhoud, echter door iemand anders dan de beoogde gebruiker) moeten voorkómen.

even more true in a world where the user (consumer) is gaining importance, empowered by the smartphone and the ubiquitous social media. Customer focus is key, whereas other functionalities (like protection during transport) are increasingly taken for granted. Also in the customer’s eye, the environmental issues that have risen since the 1970’s just have to be solved.

Areas where DIU thinking is especially important include retail and in particular multichannel e-commerce (customer satisfaction and safety in home delivery, facilitating the return of products), the food industry (facilitating the right, healthy quantity and quality of food consumption), the pharmaceutical industry (supporting therapy adherence, ensuring patient safety) and the cosmetics industry (open-ability, effectiveness of use, and storage time after opening).

Verdere kennis- en methodologieontwikkeling in DIU is om verschillende redenen belangrijk. Klantgerichtheid staat centraal, terwijl andere functionaliteiten (zoals het bieden van bescherming tijdens transport) steeds meer als vanzelfsprekend worden beschouwd. Ook de milieuproblemen van het verpakken, die sinds de jaren zeventig zo zijn toegenomen, moeten in de beleving van de klant gewoon worden opgelost.

In general, DIU also touches on aspects like integrity and reliability of the industry that creates and the retail that distributes the products. DIU makes explicit the choices that led to the design. As such, DIU promotes the better allocation of scarce resources and can be a source of innovation and a contributor to the quality of life.

NVC is already contributing to many design-related topics worldwide at this moment, most notably on accessible design (within ISO), patient-friendly design (together with HCPC Europe), graphic design (NVC Project Innovation in Packaging Print) and holistic innovation in general (bi-annual Packaging Innovation Contest De Gouden Noot).

The coming years 2018-2020 will show an increase in DIU activities, with the NVC DIU Incubator as a first step. In the NVC DIU Incubator we aim to collect a range of packaged products and pose the question to what extent these meet the demands of DIU: a packaging design that unambiguously identifies and ensures the intended use of the packaged product by the intended user.

Meer in het algemeen raakt DIU ook aan aspecten als integriteit en betrouwbaarheid van de industrie die de verpakte producten creëert en de detailhandel die ze distribueert. DIU maakt de keuzes die ten grondslag liggen aan het ontwerp expliciet. Daarmee bevordert DIU het beter en bewuster inzetten van schaarse middelen. DIU is zo een bron van innovatie en levert een bijdrage aan de kwaliteit van het leven.

NVC levert op dit moment al een bijdrage aan veel designgerelateerde onderwerpen wereldwijd, met name in accessible design (binnen ISO), patientvriendelijk design (samen met HCPC Europe), grafisch design (NVC Project Innovatie in Verpakkingsdruk) en holistische innovatie in het algemeen (tweejaarlijkse Verpakkingsinnovatiewedstrijd De Gouden Noot).

All about the association Alles over de vereniging NVC (founded in 1953) is the association of companies addressing the activity of packaging throughout the supply chain of packaged products. With more than 550 internationally orientated member companies, NVC is a large association in a dynamic environment. You can find the list of NVC members on pages 44 to 68.

The NVC membership, innovation projects, information services and education programme stimulate the continuous improvement of packaging. Every individual employee of a member company can use the NVC membership to his/her advantage.

Communication takes place in English or in Dutch.

Het NVC-lidmaatschap, de innovatieprojecten, informatiediensten en opleidingen stimuleren het continu verbeteren van het verpakken. Alle medewerkers van de NVC-lidbedrijven kunnen individueel gebruikmaken van de voordelen van het lidmaatschap. De communicatie vindt plaats in de Nederlandse of in de Engelse taal.

The NVC board members are selected from the entire membership base and are appointed during the members-only part of the annual General Meeting of Members (GMM). The Board and the managing director meet every three months. The Annual Report is audited by an external accountant (BDO) and the findings are reported in the GMM. NVC members receive detailed management information in preparation of the GMM. The next (65th) GMM will take place on 22 November 2018 in Amsterdam (NL). As always, the GMM consists of a Membersonly Meeting (MoM) and an Open Access Meeting (OaM).

The Members-only Meeting includes the Statutory Meeting (annual report, changes of the board, budget 2019) and a concise presentation of the many NVC activities over the concluded year 2018. This year (2018) we focus on the trustworthiness of the business information on packaging in our hyper-connected world. The MoM starts at 2 PM and ends with an entertaining networking party.

The Open Access Meeting is fully dedicated to the Award Ceremony of Packaging Innovation Contest De Gouden Noot 2018. Now in its 29th edition since the start in 1958, bi-annual contest De Gouden Noot has developed into the most competitive packaging innovation competition the world. The solid Gold walnut inside the winner’s trophy is the symbol for truly holistic innovation in packaging. The festive award ceremony starts at 6 PM. The NVC association office is located in Gouda, the Netherlands, near the Central Station, about one hour from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport by car or by train. Travelling from Brussels (Belgium) or Dusseldorf (Germany) takes a mere two hours by car or by train. Visitors can make use of our free Wi-Fi hotspot.

De Members-only Meeting omvat de Huishoudelijke Vergadering (jaarverslag, bestuursmutaties, begroting 2019) en presentatie van de resultaten van de vele NVC-activiteiten over het afgesloten jaar 2018. Dit jaar richten we ons op de betrouwbaarheid van bedrijfsinformatie over het verpakken in onze hyper-verbonden wereld. De MoM begint om 14:00 uur en eindigt met een netwerkborrel.

De Open Access Meeting is volledig gewijd aan de Prijsuitreiking van Verpakkingsinnovatiewedstrijd De Gouden Noot 2018.

Georganiseerd voor de eerste keer in het jaar 1958, zal dit de 29e editie zijn van wat inmiddels de meest competitieve verpakkingsinnovatiewedstrijd ter wereld is. De Gouden Noot dankt zijn naam aan de unieke trofee met daarin de massief gouden walnoot, teken van écht holistisch innoveren in verpakken. De feestelijke prijsuitreiking begint om 18:00 uur.

Het NVC-verenigingsbureau is gevestigd op één minuut lopen van Gouda CS en beschikt over een gratis – en snelle – hotspot voor internetgebruik voor u als bezoeker. Het is fysiek goed bereikbaar per auto of trein. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is eveneens dichtbij (1 uur reisafstand).
