I am deeply honored to be chosen as the South Carolina Festival of Flowers 2018 Chairman. The Festival is not only a long-standing tradition rich in history and activity, but it highlights everything that makes Greenwood a great place to live and visit. Growing up, I remember in my household, our many family members coming together in June to go to the SC Festival of Flowers. It has been a part of my life, all my life, and that is just one of the many reasons I love being a part of the Festival this year. I am especially excited to be sharing with local businesses the value of the Festival as well as working with the Chamber staff and volunteers on the behind-the-scenes planning that makes this event truly great and, most of all, fun for everyone. Enjoy all that we have to offer and have a blooming good time here in Greenwood! 4

About the SC Festival of Flowers The mission of the South Carolina Festival of Flowers is to showcase Greenwood as a destination for flowers, families & fun! The SC Festival of Flowers: Is an inclusive event that involves volunteers and participants from across the region. Offers entertainment options ranging from gardening and performances to sporting and cultural events. Focuses on education as we empower the community with horticulture knowledge and offer learning opportunities for all ages. Be an economically and ecologically sustainable festival that takes pride in being an economic catalyst for the entire Greenwood community. Volunteers Make it Happen! Without the help of more than 500 committed citizens, the SC Festival of Flowers would not be the incredible community celebration it has become.

With over 40 events, production of even a portion of the Festival would be impossible without volunteer support. From the topiaires to the events to the promotion, volunteers serve on committees that work throughout the year to guarantee Festival fun and safety for the community. In addition, many serve on one-day events performing duties such as handing out water at the 5K Run, pouring wine at Wine Walk or helping with vendors at the Arts & Crafts Show. The topsy turvy echeverias create the illusion of the scales, ridges and shadows of alligator skin. The six-foot long alligator truly looks at home near the water.

Barbie-Q is quite the ham! You will want to pose with this big girl because she loves having her picture taken. Her body is covered with creeping fig and her nose is Echeveria ‘Perle von Nurnberg’. Her ears are dressed up with pink hypoestes and creeping fig.

This eight-foot topiary is sure to be popular with horse lovers. But be careful, he is a spirited one! Standing tall covered in creeping fig and proudly wearing a blanket made of lemon ball, white and red ruby alternanthera, and ajuga. The tail and mane are planted with frosty curls sedge.

The Museum welcomes you to this special anniversary exhibit.

Who would ever have imagined that 15-year-old George W. Park, advertising seeds for sale from his own small garden, would found America’s most beloved mail-order gardening company? The year was 1868, and George placed an ad in the Rural American -- a daring move, since it cost a whopping $3.50. – his surprise, within weeks he had received $6.50 in orders. The course of his life was set, and generations of American gardeners are the better for it! So come visit the Museum and explore Park Seed Company’s rich history and fond memories.

Benjamin Mays Historic Site Tours Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. | Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Free Admission Born in Greenwood County, Dr. Benjamin E. Mays rose to become an American Baptist minister and civil rights leader who is credited with being “the principle founder of the Civil Rights Movement.” The Historic site contains Dr. Mays’ birth home which was moved from its original location in Epworth in southeast Greenwood County. In addition, the site has a modern museum and theater. Visitors will find a large collection of his books, writings, films, speeches, and personal items. The third building on site is the original Burns Springs oneroom African-American school, originally located in Epworth.

The yard surrounding the home site is reminiscent of a 1900s era sharecropper homestead that includes a cedar post clothes line, wash pot with rinsing tubs, chopping block, tree swing, old well, an original outhouse, and a family garden. More than thirty Japanese maple trees thrive in this garden, living alongside a wide variety of hydrangeas, azaleas, and camellias. Smith’s lavish garden is filled with many surprises, one of which is a deliciously fragrant Orange Flowering Tea Olive that offers a delicate citrus aroma. Another surprise includes an heirloom weather vane inherited from his Aunt Blanche McCall from Providence, Rhode Island. In an ancient willow tree over 100 years old, a full-length mirror hangs 20” high, reflecting a gently turning windmill. Suspended in another tree is a majestic piece of Chesapeake Bay driftwood decorated with weathered seashells. Wind chimes deliver cheerful melodies, and a gently flowing fountain adds harmony to the serene scene. In the gentle curves of shrubs and flowerbeds, benches coax visitors to reflect on the gardener’s hard work and nature’s beauty. A few other water features hide in the garden’s recesses, providing tranquil sounds of serenity and peaceful escape. Another interesting secret this garden keeps is that the stones bordering the walkway were initially used to balance ships in England in the 1900’s, and made their way here by way of Charleston, SC. One of the most well-kept secrets this garden boasts: a decorative wrought iron piece originally used in the film, “The Color Purple.” THE BARKLOW WILDLIFE HABITAT, 110 FERRY COVE ROAD

Here you will discover a garden landscape teaming with nature’s best! Ann Barklow, Horticulturist for the City of Greenwood, along with the assistance of the Lakelands Master Gardeners have created a gardener’s paradise. Originally designed in 2016 as a Teaching Garden for homeowners, this garden is multi-faceted. It is highly colorful. It incorporates edibles and herbs along with native plants and flowers rich in pollen and nectar from spring through fall. It is alive with nature’s pollinators: birds, bees, moths, beneficial insects and butterflies. The garden is certified with the National Wildlife Federation as a backyard wildlife habitat and with the Xerces Society as a Pollinator Habitat along with Monarch Watch as a Monarch Waystation. Clemson University has also certified this landscape as a Carolina Yard. There is a Nesting Box for native bees which provides a hotel for Leaf Cutter and Mason Bees which in turn increases her food production and blooms.

Metts Organix is a local farm located about 9 miles south of Uptown Greenwood, SC. The farm uses sustainable practices to grow high quality, all-natural produce. This is the third year in full-time production. “Farming is a passion of mine, and it is in my blood! Both paternal and maternal ancestors were farmers, and their respect and love of the land have been passed down to me. There is no where else I would rather be than outside in the fresh air working in the soil to create healthy, pesticide-free produce for the Greenwood community,” said Will Metts, owner of Metts Organix. Currently the farm is in transition to full organic production. Since the spring of 2015, Metts has been producing all-natural chemical free produce using organic growing methods. The farm currently implements a permanent bed minimum tillage production system that promotes biodiverse intense cropping. Metts also uses sustainable methods such as cover cropping to keep very high biological activity thriving in the soil. He implements beneficial insect habitats to aid in pollination and pest control. Metts boast a hearty summer garden that bears by late May and early June: tomatoes, green beans, corn, peppers, cucumbers, squash, lettuce and more. “I enjoy teaching and sharing with others my growing techniques and how everything is intertwined and look forward to having folks visit us here,” said Metts. CITY OF GREENWOOD GARDEN, 510 WEST CAMBRIDGE AVENUE

The idea for a City Garden was originated and developed by the Men’s Garden Club. The land was donated by Greenwood Mills to the City of Greenwood and adopted by the Men’s Garden Club in 1989. The addition of the gazebo, two bridges with hand rails, and two park benches began in 1991. In 1994, a tea-rose garden (made possible by Wayside Gardens) was installed followed by several trees and a large trellis covered with climbing roses. Although the Men’s Garden Club has since dissolved, several former members and friends of the garden came together as the City Garden Club in 2013 with the singular mission of restoring the garden to its former beauty and building a base of volunteers for its continued maintenance. This year the garden will feature a completely renovated Rose garden and Children’s garden thanks to the support of a wide range of individuals, companies, non-profits, garden clubs and the City of Greenwood. The perennial beds have been “adopted” by individuals and garden clubs who do all the work to maintain their beauty.One of Greenwood’s most beautiful public places it is often used for such events as weddings, picnics, reunions, photo shoots, and as an attraction for visitors to the Festival of Flowers. This horticultural display provides beauty from early spring through late autumn while educating and entertaining the public.

Greenwood Historic Churches Tour 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Free Admission The tour of historic churches in and around Greenwood is back! Churches on this year’s tour are rich in history. One building dates back to 1860, another to 1890. You’ll find a hand crafted wooden Communion Table in the shape of the cross which is the only one of its kind in South Carolina. You will see how stained glass windows tell stories from the Bible in unique ways. The craftsmanship in many of the sanctuaries and facilities is tremendous and adds uniqueness to each church. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

CONNIE MAXWELL BAPTIST CHURCH, 215 TERRELL SMITH AVE

The original frame structure used for a church on the campus of Connie Maxwell Children’s Home was built in 1893 to primarily house the Connie Maxwell School. After the 1962 decision of the Board of Trustees to relocate the church building, groundbreaking exercises were held October 11, 1964. The cornerstone was laid July 11, 1965. The first service was held on May 22, 1966, the 74th anniversary of Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. The ten nave faceted stained glass windows, the highlight of the current church’s beauty, are a gift of the alumni. EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION, 700 MAIN ST SOUTH

The church was built in 1935 and is the third church building used by Resurrection in Greenwood. It was designed by noted Greenwood architect James Hemphill, who designed homes, schools, and other public buildings across the Carolinas. He used the Church of the Cross in Stateburg as his inspiration. The church is a simple neo-Gothic structure with thick masonry walls and hammer beam trusses. It seats 180 persons. The newest improvement to it is a Marshall and Ogletree digital organ. The parish has about 450 members and a lively ministry. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 722 GRACE STREET

The sanctuary of Greenwood First Baptist Church is notable for both its beauty and its thoughtful design. The focal point of the sanctuary is clearly the large cross which hangs over the divided chancel. The gallery (balcony) features a smaller but more ornate Celtic cross, insuring that worshippers can see the cross from anywhere in the sanctuary. The hand-crafted wooden Communion Table, also in the shape of the cross, is the only one of its kind in South Carolina. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 108 W. CAMBRIDGE AVE

First Presbyterian Church first met in the Presbyterian High School Building in Greenwood in 1850. As the population grew in Greenwood, the congregation did as well. In 1899 the building now used as a fellowship hall was built, followed by the education wing in 1924. A tour of these buildings on the same floor would show the original stained glass windows, wood ceiling and intricate woodwork. 36

The year 2018 is a significant year in the history of Main Street United Methodist Church because it will celebrate the 100th year of worshiping in its Sanctuary. The first worship service was held on November 16, 1918. The celebration will take place November 11th, 2018 with Bishop Jonathan Holstein conducting the service in the format of the original service. Founded in 1858, this historic church saw several diﬀerent early structures before building its current Sanctuary with its huge stained glass window of Jesus questioning the Rabbis in the Jerusalem Temple when he was 12 years old. MOUNTAIN CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH, 103 MOUNTAIN CREEK RD, TROY

Mountain Creek Baptist Church was established in 1798 and still occupies the third building which was built in the 1890’s and is located in the Kirksey Community. There have been only minor changes to the sanctuary in the past 150 years, and everyone who sees it for the first time are in awe of the feeling of simplicity and reverence. The building was bricked by the Self Family in 1941. NINETY SIX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 120 CAMBRIDGE ST NORTH, NINETY SIX

There have been three Ninety Six Presbyterian Churches in Ninety Six, dating back to 1774. The present church, the third location, was built in 1860 as a frame building. Following a tornado in 1944, with much structural damage, the building was repaired and brick veneer added. ROCK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 122 ROCK CHURCH RD NW

First known as Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church, Rock Presbyterian Church as we know it today, was formed by missionary ministers from the Synod of New York and Philadelphia in 1770. Rock Presbyterian is known as the “Mother of Churches” as it had help start and organize churches in Ninety Six, Greenwood (First Presbyterian), Cokesbury and Coronaca. On the present grounds, the first house of worship was built of logs and used a broad flat-rock as a foundation and floor. This log church was replaced by a larger clapboard sided structure in 1815 and served as the sanctuary and classrooms until it tragically burned to the ground in 1959. Services were held in the old Quarry School, acquired earlier, until the present sanctuary was dedicated in 1959. TRANQUIL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 1702 MCCORMICK HIGHWAY

Tranquil United Methodist Church was begun about 1820, under a brush arbor. The first structure was a plain log house replaced later by a frame structure. The present sanctuary was build in 1971. Tranquil has been called the birthplace of Greenwood Methodism. We are known for our flags. On patriotic holidays our drive is lined with over a hundred large American flags. Our goal through the years has been to share the peace and love of Christ. 37
