Dear Friends & Visitors to the Greenwood Community I am honored and humbled to serve as the Chairman of the 50th Anniversary of the SC Festival of Flowers. I follow a strong legacy of leaders who have worked together with the Greenwood SC Chamber staff, board, community, and local businesses to make this year’s Festival the best it can be. The SC Festival of Flowers has changed here and there and morphed over the last 50 years. I should know. I have been a part of it in some form or fashion since the beginning in 1968. It is near and dear to my heart. Without question, every year the Festival produces top-notch events for the entire family to enjoy. The excitement builds throughout the spring as we anxiously anticipate our main weekend in June followed by a full month of fun events and activities. From the topiaries to garden tours, running to biking, performances to music, arts to crafts and so much more…we have something for everyone. With each year, the Festival continues to evolve. But what lies at the heart of everything we do can be easily summed up into one word – fun. We kick it all off June 2nd through 4th with the Arts & Crafts Show, Music at the Market, Topiaries & Tastings Wine Walk, Kidfest, 5K Run/Walk and returning this year, the Beach Dance and Flotilla on Lake Greenwood. Believe me, none of what we do would be possible without the continued support of the Festival Steering Committee, scores of volunteers, loyal sponsors and dedicated Greenwood SC Chamber of Commerce staff who ensure we all have an exceptional Festival experience. Have we got a festival planned for you! As in the 49 years before, we have our traditional events for you to enjoy but we also have a few new ones that are sure to please your family, your guests and the many tourists that visit us each year.

You will get to experience an amazing array of activities all month long. However, the main weekend, June 2nd – 4th, is packed with the most events and greatest variety. We have gardens on tour, performances for you to enjoy and more family activities than ever before.

When it comes to flowers, everyone loves the topiaries—from the majestic elephant to the dabbling ducks, there are 44 “living” plant sculptures for you to discover. You will be astonished to see the variety of colors and textures on display. We are also incredibly proud to be an America in Bloom community recognized for Outstanding Achievement for a Floral Display.

Focuses on education as we empower the community with horticulture knowledge and offer learning opportunities for all ages. The South Carolina Festival of Flowers is chartered by the Secretary of State of South Carolina as a non-profit organization for the promotion of tourism in Greenwood County.

A Bicentennial Parade was the highlight of the 9th Festival. The parade included 26 Princesses of Flowers dressed in Bicentennial costumes.

“Dinosaur Discovery” Exhibit Opening Reception

The Museum 5:30 p.m. 106 Main Street Free Admission We are thrilled about our summer exhibit this year, “Dinosaur Discovery.” It comes to us from the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and includes a life-size Triceratops, a large digging pit that kids can actually dig up fossils in, and an extensive maze that explores the habitats of dinosaurs. It will occupy the big exhibit hall on the second floor of The Museum. Kids love it, and adults, too, find a lot to interest, educate and amuse them!

The yard surrounding the home site is reminiscent of a 1900s era sharecropper homestead that includes a cedar post clothes line, wash pot with rinsing tubs, chopping block, tree swing, old well, an original outhouse, and a family garden. The homestead is accented with a cotton field.

The Invitational is named for Jimmy Self, former Chairman-of-the-Board for Greenwood Mills, who died in 1995. Self served as captain of the golf team at Clemson in 1964 & 65, was on the South Carolina Golf Association Board from 1969-71 and was generous to the game of golf in the years that followed. More than 30 Japanese maple trees thrive in this garden, living alongside a wide variety of hydrangeas, azaleas, and camellias. Nelson Smith’s lavish garden is filled with many surprises, one of which is a deliciously fragrant Orange Flowering Tea Olive that offers a delicate citrus aroma. Another surprise Smith’s garden includes is an heirloom weather vane inherited from his Aunt Blanche McCall from Providence, Rhode Island. In an ancient willow tree over 100 years old, a full-length mirror hangs 20 feet high, reflecting a gently turning windmill. Suspended in another tree is a majestic piece of Chesapeake Bay driftwood decorated with weathered seashells. Wind chimes deliver cheerful melodies, and a gently flowing fountain adds harmony to the relaxing scene. Smooth stone pathways meander through this informal one-acre shade garden, creating a peaceful place for reflection for its loving homeowners for the past 35 years. Several majestic native oak trees provide cool shade for the Elsley’s garden, which is imperative during intense South Carolina summer heat. Flourishing in the shadow of these oaks is a layer of smaller evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs, including several large Japanese maples, camellias, rhododendrons, and hydrangeas. The fully shaded ground level provides ideal conditions for an extensive range of herbaceous perennials, including hellebores (a flowering evergreen sometimes called a winter rose or Christmas rose, despite not being from the rose family), hostas (hardy, shadeloving perennials also known as plantain lilies), and lush ferns. A small kitchen garden that requires limited sunlight produces fresh herbs and greens for the home. Two Victorian Stumperies – a popular new feature using pieces of driftwood – create a striking architectural environment for displaying shade-loving plants. Antique English chimney pots and “mushroom-like” staddle stones add further design appeal to this urban

landscape. The Elsley’s entire garden is served by an irrigation system with sprinkler heads mounted on tree trunks 15’ above the ground. City of Greenwood Garden

The idea for a City Garden was originated and developed by the Men’s Garden Club. The land was donated by Greenwood Mills to the City of Greenwood and adopted by the Men’s Garden Club in 1989. The addition of the gazebo, two bridges with hand rails, and two park benches began in 1991. In 1994, a tea-rose garden (made possible by Wayside Gardens) was installed followed by several trees and a large trellis covered with climbing roses. Although the Men’s Garden Club has since dissolved, several former members and friends of the garden came together as the City Garden Club in 2013 with the singular mission of restoring the garden to its former beauty and building a base of volunteers for its continued maintenance. This year the garden will feature a completely renovated Rose garden and Children’s garden thanks to the support of a wide range of individuals, companies, non-profits, garden clubs and the City of Greenwood. The perennial beds have been “adopted” by individuals and garden clubs who do all the work to maintain their beauty. One of Greenwood’s most beautiful public places it is often used for such events as weddings, picnics, reunions, photo shoots, and as an attraction for visitors to the Festival of Flowers. This horticultural display provides beauty from early spring through late autumn while educating and entertaining the public.

1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. 210 College Road Hodges, SC The Cokesbury College Historical & Recreational Commission, will provide tours of Cokesbury College from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Visitors will see all the recent restoration efforts, both inside and outside of the College building. Commissioners, acting as tour guides, will discuss the Commission’s short and long-range plans for enhancing access to and community use of the College and grounds. In addition, Commissioners will

discuss planned restoration of other elements of the Cokesbury Community, including the Chapel and the original General Store and Post Office buildings which are located across the street from the College. Cokesbury College was built in 1854 and opened as one of the earliest Masonic Female Collegiate Institutes in the rural southeast. Cokesbury College is the centerpiece of the original 19th century utopian Cokesbury Community. The College building and grounds are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and are maintained and managed by the Cokesbury College Historical and Recreational Commission.

Volunteers Make It All Happen! Without the help of more than 500 committed citizens, the SC Festival of Flowers would not be the incredible community celebration it has become. With over 35 events, production of even a portion of the Festival would be impossible without volunteer support.
