Double Take: A Writers Retreat Detail Studio Professor: Tim Cozzens

This project tasked me with diving into a material and exploring the minute details of my design. I dove into the world of concrete and used it to my advantage in my project. All drawings are hand drafted to scale and edited digitally.

Conceptual Foundation

(Process of a Script)

The life of a screenplay goes through many writing stages, requiring different things from the writers.

(Daily Rituals)

Each writer has unique habits and rituals that are fostered by the space. They are forced to share these with their writing partner.

(Conversation)

Communication makes for a stronger partnership. Conversation is encouraged in every corner of the space.

5

Double Take: A Writers Retreat

After walking up the hill, residents enter through one door. Windows allow anyone inside to see who is approaching. Concrete stones surround the building, allowing grass to grow between them.

The heart of the cabin: the central lounge seating. The first line of sight when entering and exiting. This layout encourages face to face conversation throughout the day.

When facing writers block, writers can place themselves in front of the Inspiration Wall and observe the randomness of colors and symbols from the projection on the other side. It can be left blank or filled with inspirational materials.

11

Double Take: A Writers Retreat Mock Up I constructed a full scale mock up of the Inspiration Wall in my project. For this I built a frame to hold an acrylic sheet with engraved circles mimicking the windows. A concrete mixture was then poured in to fill the gaps and show the texture of the wall. The purpose was to show how projections interact with this design. The light seeps through windows and projects them onto the space behind it. This mock up only represents a small sections of this wall, but you can already see how powerful it will be.

This full scale model displays the functionality of the projection windows. Videos and animated graphics showing the full effect will gladly be shown upon request.

Research based collage of Dallas sculpture, art, culture, and urban design.

Design Concept Taking inspiration from the sculptural elements throughout Dallas, this design ties the core values of NEXT with the experience of the client and employees. Sculpture acts as the binding thread, unifying clients with design in a way they can understand, and employees with the space where their creativity flourishes. Much like a sculpture garden, it invites inhabitants to explore and engage with the surroundings. Curves and angles guide the eye and body through interconnected spaces, creating a journey that transcends the ordinary routine. More than simply a workplace, this environment becomes a celebration of the city’s artistic spirit. It extends an invitation to both clients and employees, encouraging them to experience their surroundings in a way beyond mere observation.

Conceptual Modeling Narrative Studio Professor: Rene King

A Community Center for Refugees Ravenswood, Chicago This concept originates from the stories and journeys of Refugees seeking shelter in other countries. They are constantly tossed around, hoping that others will show them an ounce of kindness. I thought of the life cycle of a rock, how it can start as a pebble, peacefully sat on a beach until its thrown out to sea in a storm. It has no choice but to follow the waves, blindly going forward. This model represents how rocks may seem unmovable, but they can also be the embodiment of balance. They are fluid but rigid, heavy but adaptable. They can float above you but you can also step inside them.

Community Center The Building In the heart of Ravenswood, Chicago this site is nuzzled between the Chicago River, a large empty lot, and residential homes to its South. The East side of the building offers a riverfront terrace.

Site Visit I represented my class section to document the site and report back any findings. I annotated my photographs with measurements and notes.

Wonder Pavilion Narrative Studio Professor: Rene King

What is won·der? A feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable. This pavilion feeds off of those feelings: creating an experience where users can explore every square inch. You find yourself at the center, looking all around you, and feeling at the center of the universe.
