SKIS

Salomon Rocker2 90: The Rocker2 90 is set to become one of the success stories of 2012/13 as it attracts skiers buying their first pair of wider skis. A rocker nose, wood core, partial sidewalls and a well thought-out shape all combine to create a go-to ski for all mountain skiers wanting performance and usability. Ski price £390.00 K2 Bolt: The ISPO award winning Bolt blends a speed rocker with special reinforcements, creating a ski that is fluid and smooth, yet powerful and exceptionally grippy. ‘Torsional stability and control at high speed are the basis for superior performance’ said the judges on the award panel. This is the ultimate carving instrument. Ski and binding price £600.00 Atomic Alibi: Winner of the Fall-Line Ski of the Year award. A combination of features makes this an especially versatile ski, not least the innovative Backbone technology. An ultra-lightweight titanium insert runs the length of the ski like a stabilizing backbone. As a result the Alibi runs smoothly on piste, allowing the skier to control the ski effortlessly and with precision. The Alibi is just as easy to control in powder with its 98 mm waist and All Mountain Rocker. Ski and binding price £540.00 Blizzard Black Pearl: If we’re going to mention the men’s Fall-Line winner we need to mention the women’s! The Black Pearl uses Blizzard’s radical Flipcore technology to make an all-mountain ski that is incredibly stable in variable conditions and still have performance on hard snow and at speed. Flipcore inverts the wood core to create a ‘natural’ rocker profile, retaining the energy of the core and still providing the suppleness required for soft snow. Ski price £440.00 Rossignol Pursuit 16 Ti: Rossignol’s Pursuit range of skis are new for 2012/13, designed for maximum fun on piste and they don’t disappoint. The 16 Ti is the advanced/expert model, using a full wood core with titanal reinforcement for precision and energy, and a Power Turn Rocker that delivers grip on piste and makes turn initiation easier. The Oversized Sidecut and Minicap construction provide power and control. Another award winner. Ski and binding price £525.00 Scott Jib TW: Tom Wallisch is freestyle skiing’s up and coming star and this is his pro-model, a good reason to buy the ski, but not what makes it stand out. Herve, Scott’s genius ski designer, has developed a 3D sidecut that is comprised of a long radius at the tip, a perfectly straight (yep – straight) section in the middle, and a short radius at the tail. The result is entirely predictable handling, perfect stability and impressive response. Ski price £390.00

SKI EQUIPMENT

SKI BOOTS Salomon Max Series with Quest Max 120 and XMax 120: The max series of boots represent a significant step forward for Salomon boots. 3rd generation Custom Shell offers improved wrapping and adapted comfort through better moulding; Twin Frame provides support, transmission and enhanced sensations; and, the Oversized Pivot reduces play for better precision. Put plainly, they fit really well and ski beautifully. Both £360.00 Atomic Tracker 130, Tracker 110W, Burner 110 and Medusa 90: Sometimes it seems like advanced and expert level boots are built for performance with comfort being a very distant consideration. The new Tracker, Burner and Medusa boots are addressing that. They keep the hard plastic and the close fit you’d expect for precision skiing but they add soft Live Fit zones that conform to the foot’s shape in the area of the 5th metatarsal head. £295.00 - £400.00 Lange RX 100LV RX110 and RX80W LV: Some of the most successful ideas are the simplest and the Lange RX range is proof of that. They’re true to what skiers actually need: good heel hold, decent toe space, impressive performance and overall comfort. Lange achieved this by relaxing the angles, changing the heel position, using high quality plastics that fitters can effectively adjust, but most importantly offering the boots in different width fittings. £265.00 - £320.00

SKI BINDINGS Salomon Guardian/Atomic Tracker: The Guardian and the Tracker are the result of collaboration between Salomon and Atomic. They’re the latest free tour bindings, strong enough for even the best freeride skiers and also with the capability to release the heel and set them in tour mode for walking to the very best snow stashes and hard to reach areas. £320.00

Marker Duke EPF: The original Duke helped create the free tour category and after four seasons of taking skiers to new places this latest version improves what was already the market leader. Binding widths have virtually not altered since the days of 62mmm waist skis, but skis over 100mm in the waist are now common place. By making the frame 28% wider, and shifting the mounting pattern, the Duke EPF is better suited than ever to cleanly drive wide skis. £340.00

SKI TOUR BOOTS Dynafit One/Women’s One: Dynafit are ready to prove that well fitting and supremely light boots can tour and ski well. The UltraLock system is simple to operate and in combination with the rockered sole makes climbing and walking more comfortable. The Driving Spoiler system provides powerful downhill performance and excellent heel retention on uphill. Warm with a great fit, impressive ski performance and amazing ease of use, everything a tour boot should be. £420.00

HELMETS Giro Montane and Lure: Helmet sales have boomed over the last 5 years and, with more models available than ever, helmet manufacturers are having to come up with ever better offerings. These new models address two areas by being insanely light (380g) and easily securing to a pack for the increasing number of skiers hiking/skinning to get to the freshies. The Giro standards of impressive fit-adjustability and powerful venting remain of course. £130.00

GOGGLES Scott Nav R-2 (see also Recon MOD system): The R-2 goggle is built to house the MOD GPS system and as if a goggle with built-in GPS wasn’t enough then Scott have added 2 extra very impressive features. A fit system allows adjustment around the nose and face for a customized fit, and the Nav R-2 comes with a light sensitive lens that adjusts light transmission to cut glare, provide definition and enhance clarity in any light conditions. £110.00 (excluding MOD system) Dragon APX, APXs: The must have goggle last year was the Dragon APX with its oversized lens and frameless appearance, and this is set to continue in 12/13 with the addition of the smaller fitting APXs for ladies. The big lens styling not only makes you look good it also improves your field of vision, and if the light changes then the spare easy-change low-light lens the goggles come with will ensure your vision doesn’t suffer. £160.00 Salomon Goggles (Xtend Xpro 12 orange, Xview 12 yellow green, Xtend Xcess 8 white, Xview 10 purple): Salomon did a soft release last year for their entry to the world of goggles and for 12/13 they come armed with a full offering for different face sizes, light conditions and budgets. The key things Salomon address with their range is a wide field of vision by reducing the width of the frame, and excellent comfort by using a soft material between the frame and the foam, allowing it to conform to the user’s face. From £75.00 to £140.00

SNOWBOARDS

Jones Flagship: When it comes to Big Mountain snowboarding Jeremy Jones is sat on that top step with some of the legends of our sport, however what isn’t so well known is that when it comes to designing Big Mountain Snowboards, Jeremy Jones has no equal. We could just finish there but that would be doing a disservice to what is probably the finest freeride board on the market today. Obviously this is a powerful board designed to conquer the gnarliest mountains anywhere in the world but it’s a lot more than that. Get this thing on hard pack piste and the power and response that it puts down is truly remarkable. Take it in the powder and it comes up with no effort and just begs to be ridden harder and faster. All this performance comes from total state of the art design and construction making this one of the best high performance boards on the market. £470 Bataleon GW: What happens if you take the shape and design of one of Bataleon’s best selling park boards and pack it full of top end tech? Well I’ll tell you, you end up with a truly mind blowing snowboard that takes park riding to a whole new level. Now the board of choice for the majority of the Bataleon team the GW delivers top end performance no matter what you throw at it. Based around a true twin tip Poplar and Hardwood core wrapped with carbon reinforced bi-ax glass the Global Warmer (GW) features Bataleons new Park Triple Base Technology. This creates a board that can handle the whole mountain but really excels when you take it into the park. £390 YES The Greats: The Greats is the board of choice for the majority of the YES team and when you consider that this team consists of some of the best riders in the world the gravity of just how good this board is soon becomes pretty clear. Aimed at riders who want to step up to the highest possible level, this is a true powerhouse of a board that will destroy anything that the mountain can throw at it. Giant backcountry jumps, waist deep powder, bulletproof groomers, The Greats will take these all in its stride and will spit you out the other end with the biggest grin ever on your face. Construction wise it is packed to the gunnels with state of the art features, asymmetric heel side edge, TragnaMaction edges, tri-ax fibre glass, wood composite core, super fast sintered base, it’s all there in this all terrain slayer. £410 Salomon Wonder: It’s always a moment for celebration when Salomon launch a new women’s board, it’s even more of a celebration when it’s as good as this. Don’t let the super competitive price lull you into thinking this is for entry level riders only, take a quick look at the spec and you very quickly realise that this all terrain board packs a pretty hefty punch for its price. Built around a versatile directional twin shape it utilises the same advanced camber/rocker profile as the award winning ‘Man’s Board’ to deliver a lively and responsive ride under foot combined with all the float and playfulness that you could ever want in an all terrain board. With its snappy poster core and sintered base, the Wonder delivers a great ride in all types of terrain for any rider from basic intermediate all the way through to budding pro. £280

SNOWBOARD EQUIPMENT

SNOWBOARD BINDINGS NOW I.P.O: Snowboard binding design has not really changed much in the last 30 years. But out in the deepest backcountry recesses of Canada legendary snowboarder JF Pelchat has for many years been secretly working away in his shed and is about to unleash what could easily be described as the biggest evolutionary step in snowboard bindings since the highback. We could end the story there but we won’t because like all the best stories this one takes a few more twists and turns. Once JF had his prototype built he took it around all the big snowboard brands and door after door was shut in his face without them even looking at it. At this point JF gave up and stashed his revolutionary binding away. Now this is where our story takes a strange turn. For years the binding sat there gathering dust until one day after a chance conversation, JF’s prototype ended up on the feet of one of the world’s best and well known riders. This once abandoned dusty prototype suddenly became the most talked about innovation in snowboarding with everybody desperate to ride it! Now at last after all the blood sweat and tears that went into its development Mr JF Pelchat presents the singular largest step in the performance of a snowboard binding; the revolutionary NOW IPO. £250

Switchback: This is the new binding brand from the creative geniuses at Bataleon. Never ones to follow convention they have revolutionised the way you buy bindings and, thanks to some great innovations, in the way you use bindings. Offering total flexibility, the Switchback binding quickly switches between a highback binding for those days when you want a responsive ride and a highback-free binding for when you want a looser and more surf-inspired ride. You can also customise the way your binding looks. Select each element from loads of colourways then clip them together tool-free to create your unique and individual set. £150/£180/£200

SNOWBOARD BOOTS Burton Driver X: If you are looking for absolute performance and maximum support from your snowboard boots then the Driver X should be on the top of your list. For pretty much a decade this boot has been the stiffest in Burton’s range and at home on the feet of the most experienced and demanding free riders. With specific backcountry focused design and bomb proof construction the Driver X is the perfect choice for those riders who favour a hike, sled of split board rather than a chair lift. £290

Nike Kaiju: The Nike Kaiju is technical freestyle at its finest. This mid flexing snowboard boot uses Nike Zoom Air cushioning in the sole for optimum dampening and shock absorption, perfect for the most demanding freestyle riders. The liner features fully heat mouldable construction and amazing levels of support that are enhanced with Outlast technology for optimum foot temperature control. Even the outsole is designed to offers maximum board feel and control to the rider, now you can see why this is a Nike team favourite. £290

MOUNTAIN CLOTHING

MOUNTAIN CLOTHING TECHNOLOGY 12/13

Technical mountain clothing has to work... from UK mountain walkers on rain lashed ridges and alpine climbers on steep exposed faces to those pushing their limits on the world’s 8,000m peaks... if mountain clothing fails in its intended function, lives can be at risk. For generations, mountaineers used various combinations of waxed cotton and coated nylon to keep the weather out. But whilst the cotton solution gave some breathability, it leaked in heavy rain. Conversely coated nylon kept the weather out but suffered badly from condensation build up, saturating the user from within. As we know, GORE-TEX fabric came along and revolutionised mountain clothing, delivering durable fully waterproof protection with genuine breathability. GORE-TEX fabrics remain market leaders in mountain sports apparel but some interesting new developements are coming to the market that could start to gain momentum. GORE-TEX offer two leading-edge fabrics to today’s mountain sports enthusiast: PRO SHELL: GORE-TEX Pro Shell 3-layer fabric is extremely tough, highly breathable, durably waterproof and windproof. Garments engineered in Pro Shell fabric are designed for use in extended extreme conditions and are the first choice of expeditions and mountain professionals worldwide. ACTIVE SHELL: GORE-TEX Active Shell garments feature a lighter weight 3-layer construction resulting in maximum garment weight of 400 grams. This completely new class of waterproof garment delivers extreme breathability (RET<3) and excellent next to skin comfort together with waterproof and windproof protection. Ideal for fast forward athletes seeking reliable protection and comfort during highly aerobic, done in a day activities such as fast alpine ascents, trail running and mountain biking.

!Arc’teryx Alpha SV Jacket in GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric. £499.99

"Rab Stretch Neo Jacket in Polartec NeoShell fabric. £249.99

"Mountain Equipment Supercell Jacket in GORE-TEX Active Shell fabric. £219.99

New to the market and getting rave reviews from users is Polartec NeoShell. Polartec looked hard at the shell garment options available to mountaineers. With conventional microporous waterproof/breathable fabrics breathability is achieved through diffusion: moisture and heat create enough pressure inside the garment enabling moisture vapor to passes through the fabric. Soft shell fabrics deliver increased breathability by making use of convection (a constant exchange of air allows more moisture vapor to escape) but trade waterproofness to achieve this greater breathability. Now, Polartec have launched NeoShell. This delivers the best of both worlds. Its exclusive membrane allows air to pull moisture vapor out, even at extremely low levels of pressure. So it helps keep you drier during high-exertion activities whilst delivering highly durable waterproof protection.
