ERCOLE MONTI Born in Rome in 1927 and educated there, Monti was deeply affected by his friendship with the painters of the Scuola Romana. In 1948 his first journey to Paris, precipitated by his interest in the legacy of CÊzanne, revealed the seeds of a new and enduring passion of the works of Bonnard and Ensor, whom Monti met in Ostende in 1949, and which were to influence his whole artistic and personal life. Although Monti chose architecture as his profession, this did not prevent him from painting continuously. On the contrary, the opportunity to meet some of the most eminent architects of the century such as Aalto, Scarpa and Rietveld, and the direct realisation of Wright’s organic architectural theories, contributed to his inspiration for his subsequent paintings. At the same time his passionate discovery of the work of C. Permeke, J. Dubuffet and Anthony Tapies was to influence his work. He now works in Rome, where he lives, in Venice and in the Dolomite mountains, all of which are reflected in his paintings of landscapes, sea, clouds, and interiors, each an evocation of the fleeting impression left on the eye.
