FOR THE A DVA N C E M E N T OF ARTS & CULTURE WESTWOOD

EAST HOLLYWOOD

Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living is the Hammer Museum’s biennial exhibition of 39 artists who are inspired by everyday life, community and cultural traditions.

Last year, I featured Pam Sessions in an episode of onthetrend as a friend from UCLA / an incredible DJ.

All of the artists are based in Los Angeles and visitors are encouraged to vote for a few to win awards. My favorite pieces were made by Kyle Kilty, Christopher Suarez, Young Joon Kwak, Jiyoung Moon, Michael Alvarez, Dan Herschlein, and Erica Mahinay.

And last Friday night, she kicked off her newest project: hypnotec - an event series focused on elevating hypnotic house & techno music. Launched at a secret location in East Hollywood, this evening brought together a talented mix of artists (STRAWBRY’s set was a favorite) and I look forward to seeing where hypnotec takes place next!

On view until December 31, I recommend a day trip to Westwood to walk around the neighborhood and hangout on the museum’s floors. WEST HOLLYWOOD

CHINATOWN

In recent weeks, I’ve returned to West Hollywood Park to eat lunch outdoors, read a book, and watch the sunset in the distance.

A short walk past City Hall and you will arrive in a historic neighborhood that regularly hosts live events and artistic programming.

Located off San Vicente Blvd and around the corner from infamous bars and restaurants, these fields are rarely filled with people (the dog park being most popular on the property.)

At Charlie James Gallery is Duke Riley’s Tomorrow is a Mystery, on view until October 21.

And then around the corner is Matthew Marks Gallery where Alex Da Corte’s THE DÆMON is currently on view until November 4.

In these works, Riley repurposes plastic vessels like Bic lighters, tampon applicators, bottle caps, floss picks and combines them with seashells from Brooklyn beaches.

Published October 14 at 10:55 AM for the beginning of a new moon. Sincerely, Elliott Desai
