Zilker At a Glance LO C AT I O N In the heart of Austin, the Zilker neighborhood is a prime location spanning an area of approximately 1.7 square miles. Situated just south of downtown, Zilker is bordered by Barton Hills to the west, Bouldin Creek to the east, and the Colorado River (known as Lady Bird Lake) to the north.

HISTORY Established in the early 1900s, the Zilker neighborhood has a rich history. The neighborhood is named after Colonel Andrew Jackson Zilker, a businessman and

philanthropist who purchased much of the land in the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1917, he donated over 350 acres of land to the city of Austin, which became Zilker Park. Today, Zilker remains one of Austin’s most desirable neighborhoods, known for its balance of urban living and the city’s natural beauty.

SCHOOLS Homes in Zilker are within the Austin Independent School District. There are a few private schools and two colleges including the University of Texas and St. Edward’s University nearby.
