Popular newsman takes station break for health reasons

By KATHRYN ROSS ANGELICA — Some say it takes a village. In the case of Angelica, it takes a community of angels.

It was this time last year when two people realized that there were some in their community in need of food and fellowship. Leslie Haggstrom and Chet Gosper realized that, due to the coronavirus epidemic and the statewide shutdown, some in Angelica were in need — in need of food, masks, information and simple human contact.

“Some people were afraid to leave their houses to get groceries or they were just isolated with no one able to visit them due to the pandemic,” Haggstrom

said.

That’s when Gosper and Haggstrom organized Angelica Community Angels, a group of volunteers who help, provide and deliver meals to those in need.

They asked for and got volunteers to prepare meals, including a main course and a dessert, and volunteers to deliver them. They started out delivering to 14 people, but through word of mouth the number grew to between 26 and 30.

From March 22 to June 27, 2020, they delivered meals on 26 separate dates to those who needed them.

Thirty meals were delivered on each date for a total of 780 meals.

On three occasions,

meals were purchased by the ACA to deliver.

The Angelica Hotel supplied an Easter dinner and another dinner while others were purchased from local American Legion chicken barbecue.

Donations of both food and money and time came into the ACA and some recipients gladly paid for their meals or gave monetary donations. The meals were offered free to the recipients.

“The Angelica community and friends have been incredibly generous with their time and money,” Haggstrom said.

But it wasn’t just a matter of feeding people who couldn’t get out or who were

isolated due to COVID restrictions. The most important part of the project was that the community came together, to supply and prepare meals and to help one another.

“It’s been a blessing,” said Haggstrom.

“As Christians we’re required to help others.”

She went on to say, “The best part of the project has been knocking on doors and finding someone who is happy to see us. We get to talk about what is happening in the community and help them navigate this new world in which we live, provide information as to where they can get help for certain See Angels on page 2...

By KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — Television may have “The Voice,” but for the last 40 years Wellsville and the surrounding area has heard the voice of Michael T. Baldwin.

Whether it was on WLSV or WJQZ radio or the Wellsville Regional News Network blog, local people knew when they heard his voice they were getting the news from a reliable newsman — and a friend.

“I love this area and I love the people who live here,” Baldwin said, revealing that is part of the reason he has worked for so long in local news.

While Baldwin’s daily broadcasts can still be heard on 93.5 FM, WQRW, due to health reasons he recently stopped his blog.

“It used to get as many as a quarter mil-

lion hits and reached people from Wellsville and all over,” he said.

“I was always surprised at how many people read it, so I always tried to get all I could in it.”

While the number of daily hits the blog still receives shows that there is an appetite for news, Baldwin says he can’t do it anymore, basically because he is already doing 48 live radio broadcasts daily for stations in New York, Pennsylvania and South and North Carolina. Those are paid gigs; the blog was free to access, but Baldwin had to pay for the domain.

He now delivers the news on 12 different radio stations from Wellsville to Fayetteville, N.C., including stations in Waverly, Sayre, Pa., Binghamton, Bath and Oswego.

Rep. Tom Reed apologizes, plans to retire following misconduct claim

U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, has ruled out a challenge to embattled Gov. Andrew Cuomo after reports of his own sexual misconduct surfaced.

First elected in 2010, the congressman in the 23rd Congressional District, which includes Allegany County, announced he won’t seek any elected office in 2022 after a former female lobbyist came forward with claims that he drunkenly fondled her during a party four years ago.

Nicolette Davis said Reed unhooked her bra and touched her thigh while the two were in a Minneapolis pub during an event in 2017.

After first declaring the allegation was inaccurate, Reed, 49, said in a statement that the incident occurred “at a time in my life in which I was struggling.” He said he entered treatment that year and realized he was “powerless over alcohol.”

Reed went on to apologize in a statement released on Sunday night.

“I was wrong, I am sorry, and I take full responsibility.”

“Consistent with my recovery, I publicly take ownership of my past actions, offer this amends and humbly apologize again to Ms. Davis, my wife and kids, loved ones, and to all of you,” Reed said.

Villages Allegany County hosted elections March 16 ecutive order delaying them due to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The order also required existing elected officials to hold their positions until an election was held.

Allegany County District V incumbents announce reelection bids BELMONT — All three Allegany County legislators representing District V have announced their intentions to run for re-election this year.

District V is represented by Republicans Janice Burdick, Phil Curran and Brooke Harris, all of Alfred.

Burdick is running for her second term on the board of legislators.

She serves as vice-chair of the Human Services Committee as well as serving on the Budget, Planning and Economic Development and Personnel committees.

She is the legislative representative on the county’s Office for the Aging Advisory Board and the Community Services Board. ”These past three years have been a true learning experience and very challenging, especially during the COVID pandemic,” Burdick said.

If re-elected, she said she will continue to listen to all residents and be a voice for their concerns. ”I will continue to be fiscally responsible and, along with my colleagues, fight to get Albany to send the money directly to the counties that rightfully is theirs (such as sales tax), and to stop them from taking AIM money from the county’s sales tax revenues,” Burdick said.

Curran is seeking a fourth term. He serves on the Ways and Means, Planning and Economic Development and Public Works committees, serves as vice-chair of the Budget Committee and he is the vice chair of the board.

Curran also chairs an organization tasked with building a wireless broadband system for the underserved

In addition to his county leadership positions, Harris serves as president of the Western New York InterCounty Association, is a member of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Standing Committee on Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Southern Tier Extension Railroad Authority board. ”It’s been a tremendous privilege to serve alongside such skilled and thoughtful public servants, and to support the county’s incredible workforce and management team,” Harris said. “I’ve been incredibly encouraged by our recent successes in economic development, and I look forward to continuing that work.”

Sibble, Yates lead B-R to second in Section 5 B3 tourney

OVID — Trent Sibble and Dawsen Yates won their weight classes, leading the BolivarRichburg wrestling team to a second-place finish in the seasonending Section 5 Class B3 championships on March 20.

B-R’s 152 points placed it second out of 14 schools in Class B3, behind only South Seneca’s 178.

Both first seeds, Yates won the 131-pound bracket and Sibble won at 215.

How families can comfortably share close quarters

As the COVID-19 pandemic stretched on, l families had to adapt to changing situations.

Quarantine proved challenging even for the most resilient people, and families sharing close quarters had to find ways to stay calm and comfortable under one roof.

During the pandemic, families have spent more time together thanks to school closures, remote working and social distancing restrictions that limited contact between people who live in different d households. The home improvement resource BobVila.com says that the average home in the United States is around 1,760 square feet, but when everyone is clamoring for a spot to spend most of their days, even the most

expansive home can begin to feel a bit too confined. The following are some ways families can live comfortably when sharing close quarters for extended periods of time.

• Designate personal spaces. Bedrooms can be private respites, but they’re not necessarily the best places for people to spend the majority of their time. Try to create nooks that family members can call their own, like a man cave in the garage or a desk in a spare room for school lessons.

• Designate times for common areas.

Make a schedule that designates spaces for specific times, particularly for those who may need uninterrupted study or work periods.

• Establish defined routines. Stick to a rou-

tine so that everyone at home knows what to expect and when. Parents can work around children’s school schedules when they know how school days are arranged. Children can avoid interrupting meetings if they realize that meetings occur at the same time each day. Set break times for meals so everyone can take a break and spend time together each day.

• Voice concerns and keep communication open. Family members should be able to freely express frustrations, anger or even fear of situations without being judged, according

to the wellness resource Step to Health. Make sure everyone in the home recognizes others’ feelings are valid.

• Get out when you can. Family members can opt for safe interactions with friends or peers when needed.

Engaging in conversation or getting a perspective from someone outside of the home can be beneficial. Even a short stroll alone outdoors can help to reduce stress. Parents of young children may want to establish a “quaranteam” with other caregivers so they can get a respite outside the home and

leave the kids with trusted help.

Allegany County football kicks off with losses for B-R, C-R and Wellsville

BOLIVAR — Looking down the stat sheet, Bolivar-Richburg held advantages in most categories in March 20’s opening week Section 5 Class D-2 football game, except two crucial ones: turnovers and points.

The Wolverines ran nearly twice as many plays as visiting Geneseo/Mount Morris and held an advantage of 250-150 in total offensive yards. But after three scoreless

quarters Geneseo/ MM scored the lone touchdown on a 29yard pass from Adam Wright to Caden Willis and held on for an 8-0 victory.

B-R’s attempt to answer the score ended as time expired: the Wolverines drove to the 8-yard line and stopped the clock with one second left. But a toss sweep on the final play was stopped at the 3-yard line, handing the Wolverines a

Week 1 loss.

Wellsville 7-12 students going to in-school learning four of five days March 29

WELLSVILLE – Friday the Wellsville School District announced that students in Grades 7-12 will be going back to school four out of five days a week.

When school started in September, high school and 7 and 8 grade students were divided into two groups and each attended school on campus on alternate days, with all students tuned into a remote learning day on Wednesday.

School Superintendent David Foster was adamant that the COVID-19 required sixfeet separation was the reason why all students couldn’t attend school at the same time but vowed that the board’s greatest desire was to see all students back in the school building.

What changed – while studies show that there is virtually no difference between students being six or three feet apart when it comes to spreading the virus, the Center for Disease Control has not yet ruled on the matter. So, when Wellsville high schoolers attend classes March 29, their desks or seats will still be six feet apart, Foster said.

Wellsville students, staff and educators will continue to adhere to the six-foot social distancing requirement as well as all the other current precautions including mask wearing and daily student screenings.

However, what has schanged in the district Foster said are the currently low positivity rates in the town, the number of teachers and staff who remain unvaccinated (although the number changes daily) which is now in the 20s and the contact tracing requirements

have been subject to change.

“We had started planning on getting the students back in the classroom working with the six feet of separation. We looked at the capacity of the rooms and the sizes of the classes and worked with the guidance department to work it out,” Foster said.

As for the timingone week before the students go on Spring Break (in 2020 students never returned to the classroom after the break), Foster said, it is a kind of test run.

“We don’t want to be reckless. We want to make sure the system works, so that we can eventually get to a full five days in the school building for every student.”

He said the break will give them time to assess how the four-day a week school worked.

The District will continue working its plan and factor in any changes in the distancing requirements.

“We’ll do four days a week and keep working on the plan,” he said.

The District is also making adjustments for students who may not want to come back to the school building, but who want to continue remote learning in their homes.

Foster said he expects all the students will come back, however.

With only three months left in the school year, why bother change things now? Foster explained, “It is our (board of education) belief that in-school learning is very important to the development of our students.”

Foster is not procrastinating on what the Fall will bring to the district.

“We’re not sure what the Fall will bring. We may very well be seeing the same thing we’re seeing now.”

As of this week, all New York residents age 50 and over, as well as those in public facing jobs and with comorbidities, are eligible for the vaccine. The Moderna vaccine is limited to those at least age 18, while the Pfizer vaccine may be given to minors age 16 and over who are eligible based on job or medical condition, but a parent or guardian must be present at the clinic.

Between March 19 and March 20, 633 people received a first dose of vaccine, bringing the county’s total to 20.4% of all residents.

Officials also reported

78 residents completed a vaccine series, bringing the total to date to 4,987 — 10.7% of all county residents.

Both percentages remained lower than the state average, with 26.1% of state residents — 5.2 million people — having received at least one dose, and 13.4% having a completed vaccine series.

CASE COUNTS INCREASED slightly in Allegany County over the past weekend. Two new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the county on March 20, with four more reported over the weekend.

The total as of March 20 was 3,036 cases.

Of the infections reported to date, county officials reported 2,959 — an increase of 18 since March 19. State officials report 82 deaths of county residents, 55 of which occurred in the county.
