‘Yer durn tootin’,’ Gabby to get a historical marker

By KATHRYN ROSS For the last several years, the Wellsville Lions Club has been educating locals and tourists alike by placing historical markers about the town. They can be found in places like Island Park, on the hospital lawn, on the library lawn, on Main Street and at the post office touting everything from the contribution of William and Gertrude Jones to Tan Bark City. Now the Lions Club says it will place one of the blue historical markers near Pizza King to honor George Francis Hayes. At one time his was a household name to kids and adults

across the nation. He’d starred in more than 200 movies and programs from the silver screen to the small screen with matinee idols and icons, from Hop-Along Cassidy to Roy Rogers and John Wayne. He was the ultimate sidekick — grizzled, grumpy and outspoken. He was Gabby Hayes. Hayes was born in Stannards in his father’s hotel in 1885, but as a lad he was drawn to the bright lights of Wellsville, where there were theaters and vaudeville stages with renowned thespians and entertainers treading the boards. He was the third of seven children born to Elizabeth Morri-

Wellsville 7-12 students going to in-school learning four of five days March 29

By KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE – Friday the Wellsville School District announced that students in Grades 7-12 will be going back to school four out of five days a week. When school started in September, high school and 7 and 8 grade students were divided into two groups and each attended school on campus on alternate days, with all students tuned into a remote learning day on Wednesday.

School Superintendent David Foster was adamant that the COVID-19 required sixfeet separation was the reason why all students couldn’t attend school at the same time but vowed that the board’s greatest desire was to see all students back in the school building. What changed – while studies show that there is virtually no difference between students being six or three feet apart when it comes to spreading the virus, the Center for

Our ongoing work at the cemetery this summer included cleaning stones that became weather stained. Many are darkened and some are difficult to read. While doing this, it became apparent that many foundations are crumbling and some are actually disappearing. Some stones are very large and could easily fall and ruin nearby stones as the foundations disintegrate. This is definitely a liability that needs to be addressed. Our insurance will cover some damage under certain circumstances, but we need to show that we have addressed the situation and tried to contact lot owners of problem. This is difficult to do. In some cases, we have no idea if there are any relatives still alive. There is also the problem of phone numbers not listed in the directory anymore and it is also practically impossible to notify anyone by mail because the mail is discarded if the address is not correct. With these problems stated, we hope many will read this notice. Please check your foundations. If your lots have water erosion around the stones, you are not liable to fill it in. Our employee checks lots each Spring, and fills in if lots have settled or water erosion has occurred. As stated in deed, you, the lot owner is liable for foundation replacement or repair. As also stated in deed, we prefer our employee do repair and replacement of foundations. If you find you need work done, please contact me for the cost estimate. There are some instances in the old cemetery that some stones have never had foundations put in.

He was consistently named as one of the top 10 Western actors in movie polls and was listed as one of the Top Ten Money-Making Western Stars for 13 years. After his last appearance on the big screen in 1950, he moved to television. There he starred alongside Rogers and Dale Evans in the “Happy Trails” show before hosting his own children’s program, “The Gabby Hayes Show” from 1950 to 1956. Throughout those celebrity years and after his retirement, Hayes would return to his “adopted” hometown and spend time in local cafes catching up with friends and giving auto-

graphs to children. It is noted that he also spent time playing cards with friends. The owners of Mama’s Smokin’ BBQ in Shongo are proud to claim that the tin-wall paneling and the tin used to decorate the bar, in the recently constructed building, came from a cabin Hayes visited when he was in the area. Hayes died in February 1969 in Los Angeles. He is buried in the famous Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills — his grave is marked, “George F. Hayes.” He is remembered as George and as Gabby with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Lions Club’s Civic Improvement Committee will spend more than $1,600 on the marker which will be put in place later this year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that as many as 6,000 fatal crashes each year may be attributed to drowsy drivers. The National Sleep Foundation found about half of adult drivers in the United States admit to consistently getting behind the wheel while feeling drowsy. In addition, more than 40 percent of survey respondents say they have fallen asleep behind the wheel at least once. The impact of drowsiness on driving is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated, distracted or under the influence of both legal and illegal drugs. • Reaction times are greatly reduced and worsen

the drowsier the driver becomes. • Awareness of hazards and the ability to sustain attention are diminished. • Driving after being awake more than 20 hours without sleep is the equivalent of driving with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent. • The National Safety Council warns that fatigued drivers are three more times more likely to be in a car crash than drivers who are not fatigued. • Insufficient sleep is tied to poor decision-making, which can lead to risktaking behind the wheel. Some drivers may not recognize they are driving while drowsy. Drivers with certain sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, may not recognize that their interrupted, less restorative sleep can adversely affect their safety behind the wheel. Addressing sleep disorders can help drivers be more safe. Other people may be sleep deprived from working shift hours or taking care of young children. Asking for help to catch up on sleep can alleviate drowsiness when behind the wheel. Individuals can take additional steps to make them less susceptible to drowsy

driving. • Avoid driving between midnight and 6 a.m. or in the mid-afternoon when sleepiness peaks, according to the Sleep Foundation. • Ask to change medications if they cause drowsiness. Check to see if supplements list drowsiness as reactions and avoid those that do.

• Take breaks when driving long distances. Travel with a driving partner who can share the responsibility of driving. Drowsy driving is a problem that can be prevented. But drivers must first recognize the threat that drowsy driving can pose.

Borrello, Giglio want more COVID vaccine for So. Tier ALBANY — State Sen. George Borrello and Assemblyman Joseph Giglio have repeated their calls for the governor and state health officials to establish additional COVID-19 vaccination clinics to serve Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. Borrello asked earlier this month for more action from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Dr. Howard Zucker, New York’s commissioner of health, after more people from Erie County than Allegany County were vaccinated since Friday at the state’s temporary mass vaccination site at Jamestown Community College in Olean. “We won’t defeat this pandemic by pitting one group of New Yorkers against their neighbors,” Borrello said. “The rules should be the same for everyone. However, once again, the needs of rural communities are being ignored by this administration.” Borrello said only 10% of the vaccinations went to residents of Allegany County while 22% went to Erie County residents.

“While I am grateful that 3,567 people, mostly from Western New York, were able to get vaccinated at (JCC), more needs to be done to meet the needs of our rural residents,” he said. “People in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties deserve the same consideration when it comes to getting this life-saving vaccine as their neighbors and fellow New Yorkers in Erie County have.” Borrello also called registration for vaccination appointments at the site “a free-forall” because the state did not restrict it to residents of our rural counties. County and Delaware County received vaccinations in Olean, while only residents from certain zip codes in and around Buffalo were able to register for a recent state vaccination clinic there. Borrello also called on the state to allocate more doses of COVID-19 vaccine for residents of Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. He said the Cuomo administration sent only 3,500 doses of vaccine to its Olean mass vaccination site, while 14,000 doses were sent to the Buffalo site. He pointed out the three combined counties in the Southern Tier have a population close

to that of the City of Buffalo. The governor, he said, “needs to stop politicizing” the vaccine rollout and address the needs of rural residents as well. Giglio, R-Gowanda, assailed what he called “the continued mistreatment of rural communities in Western New York” during the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of inadequate supply of vaccine.
