Craig Clark, executive director of the Allegany County Industrial Development Agency, noted it was unusual for a large company to spend as much time as Great Lakes did in finding an ideal site in the county — almost two years — rather than cutting its losses and moving to another area altogether.

“At many times they were unsure they were going to stay because we could not find a site,” Clark said, noting access to Interstate 86 was critical, as were industrial levels of water, electricity, sewer capacity and natural gas, took many sites out of the running.

Archbishop Walsh Academy and the Walsh Sports Boosters Club will still host their annual St. Patrick’s Day Raffle OLEAN– Archbishop Walsh Academy will celebrate its annual St. Patrick’s Day event with a series of cash raffles leading up to the grand prize drawing of $20,000.

After nearly a year in the new village offices the array of antique photographs of “old” Wellsville that graced the walls of the former board room have been hung in the new boardroom.

The mayor thanked Village Clerk Wendy Seely for doing the work. Seely said that she had the help of her daughters.

Legislator John Ricci, R-Cuba, said he supported a portion of the resolution calling for the IDA and the company to redevelop the current site in Cuba, which would see its more than 200 employees transferred to the new site when it

is expected to open in five years.

However, town and village officials have expressed concern over the loss of almost $200,000 a year in taxes on the site for town, county and school agencies.

“I’d like to see it remain in Cuba, but we know that’s not going to happen,” he said.

“One-hundred percent,

we’ve got to keep this in the county, keep the jobs in the county.”

Clark said that redeveloping the site on Haskell Road is a priority.

“We’ve already started negotiations and discussions with the town on how to make that happen,” he said. “That’s important to us, too, to look at the whole county.”

Maple tapping: Learning old skills for a modern world

By KATHRYN ROSS SCIO — Environmental science students at Scio Central School are looking forward to reaping their reward after placing 10 taps in maple trees near the school grounds.

At 8 a.m. March 1 and 2, in frigid weather, students Carter Silsby, Melanie Davenport and Joshua Walsh followed their science teacher, Kyle Canfield, outside and crossed the street to a small grove of trees in a park.

They carried bucket, hammer and drill.

Their goal was to place several more taps in maple trees and hang bags to collect the sap that was sure to start running once the sun warmed up. They had already checked to see the taps set the previous day had already yielded half full bags.

While all trees produce sap, maple trees produce the sweetest.

The students knew exactly what trees to tap, since watching a video about sap production in class.

“We’re looking for trees with flaky bark and lichens and maple leaves,” explained Silsby as he used a portable hand drill to make a hole in the tree Marsh hammered in the tap for a tight fit, while Davenport hung a blue plastic bag made for gathering sap on the tap.

“This is a very rural community and rural communities are often involved with growing their own food,” Canfield said. “A project like this teaches the students a skill that will also help the community.”

Tapping trees in Western New York has a long tradition that goes back to the indigenous people of the land.

New York’s maple syrup production has increased approximately 50% in the last five years, hitting a 75-year record in 2019, with 820,000 gallons produced, according to the USDA’s National Agriculture Statistics Service.

Out of the seven leading maple syrup producing states, New York ranks second only to Vermont.

None of the students in Canfield’s class had ever tapped a maple tree before. And that, they said it is part of what they like about the elective course they’re taking.

“I like hands on learning,” said Davenport, “I’d rather be doing this than bookwork. This is better than being in a classroom.”

“I like doing this because I like the syrup,” noted Walsh.

Tasting the syrup is on the menu.

Allegany County COVID vaccinations increase BELMONT — Allegany County no longer has the worst COVID-19 vaccination record in the state.

As of March 8, the state Department of Health reported 6,767 county residents had received at least one vaccine dose — 14.6% of the county’s population, up from 10.9% on Friday.

The increase is credited to a 500-shot clinic held Friday at Genesee Valley Central School, as well as the 3,500-shot clinic being run over five days at Jamestown Community College’s in campus in Olean.

Of all vaccines received by county residents, 1,900 first doses were administered by the county Department of Health, while 603 second doses were administered by the department.

Trailing the rest of the state consistently until this weekend, Al-

legany County jumped ahead of five counties in terms of percentage of population to receive at least one dose of vaccine.

Neighboring Steuben County recorded a percentage of 13.4%, while Orleans County along Lake Ontario recording 13.5%.

The county is still below the state average, which was 18.8% Monday morning, with 9.4% of the state with a completed vactcine series.

The county also lags the other four counties in Western New York. Erie County leads the region at 19.2%.

Kings County — the borough of Brooklyn — and Bronx County reported rates of 13.3%, the lowest in the state.

Hamilton County, with just 4,434 people living entirely within the borders of Adirondack Park, reported a rate of 48.1% to lead the state.

COVID-19 CASE COUNTS rose again over the weekend, and one new death due to the virus was recorded.

Officials reported three new cases on Monday, bringing the total to date to 2,987.

Since Friday — figures on the county’s website were not updated Saturday or Sunday — cases had risen by 13.

To date, 2,897 have recovered, 82 have died and nine are still active cases.

The number of residents in quarantine and isolation also dropped over the weekend. As of Monday, 149 residents were in quarantine, down from 203 on Friday. In total, 10,781 quarantines or isolations have been ordered.

The students will get to help with the boiling down. They are making hydrometers in class in preparation for their trip to the evaporator.

Traditionally it takes around 40 gallons of sap, boiled down, to make just 1 gallon of sweet, sticky maple syrup.

The students also have a promise from the head of the school cafeteria, who said they would prepare a special pancake breakfast for them using the syrup they harvested and processed.

Until that day comes, the students will be busy monitoring their crop.

This is Canfield’s and the class’s second environmental project for the semester. The teacher won a $2,500 State Farm Teachers Assist Grant earlier in the year to start a honey gathering project.

The bees and hives will be arriving in warmer weather.

The students will don protective gear instead of winter coats, gloves, scarves, and hats to harvest the honey.

In Our History Oct. 12, 1918: All soda fountains ordered closed The Wellsville Board of Health ordered all drinking places and ice cream saloons closed until the deadly Spanish flu epidemic was over. The action was taken to prevent the congregating of people in these places and from the fear of improperly washed drinking glasses and dishes.

According to the Thelma Rogers Genealogical & Historical Society, Wellsville had no “ice cream saloons” to close under the order, but there were a number of places where soft drinks were sold. The closing order affected the Aster Ice

Cream Parlors, Cretekos Bros. the Fassett House, Brunswick and Ackley House Cafes, the Lounge, Kane’s billiard rooms, and other places.

Under the previous order all billiard rooms and bowling alleys were closed, with only cigars and tobacco allowed to be sold from those places.

The epidemic was not increasing in Wellsville more than was to be expected, “and it is no doubt largely due to the prompt action of the local health officer and authorities in closing the schools and prohibiting crowd gatherings.”
