BY KATHRYN ROSS ANGELICA — One doesn’t expect to see a farmers market when the winds of winter are blowing, but that is not true in Angelica, where two farmers and artisans markets will take place this weekend.

summer months, usually come to an end in October, but that doesn’t mean that the harvest season is over. Much of the autumn harvest has longevity and some farmers prolong their growing season through the use of greenhouses, said Danelle Mascho

A new family model for Catholic parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo to work closer together has been announced.

Following consultation with clergy and laity, the Diocese’s 161 parishes will be grouped into 36 Families of Parishes. Of the 36 families, six will begin a pilot-phase implementation of the families model in January.

It’s all part of the Diocese’s “Road to Renewal” effort, which hopes to reinvigorate the Catholic faith, fully optimize parish and diocesan

resources and increase the reach and impact of ministries throughout Western New York.

In Allegany County, Our Lady of the Angels in Cuba, St. Patrick in Belfast and St. Patrick in Fillmore make up Family No. 2 and will be a part of phase one.

Family No. 1 consists of five other parishes serving most of Allegany County — St. Mary in Bolivar, Holy Family in Belmont, Immaculate Conception in Wellsville, SS. Brenden and Jude in Alfred and St. Mary

“The pilot introduction of the Family of Parishes model represents an important milestone on our Road to Renewal,” explained Bishop Michael W. Fisher.

A Parish Model Task Force and a Diocesan Renewal Task Force were started more than a year ago with the effort to look at best practices regionally and nationally. Members

learned how other dioceses facing similar challenges of diminished financial resources and reduced church and school attendance have successfully continued operating in their regions.

The renewal task force is a collaboration of clergy and laity who studied, gathered input and documented recommendations for the diocese. After an extensive process of collaboration with clergy, parish leaders and educators, it was determined

Angelica Angel popular the world over

BY KATHRYN ROSS ANGELICA — With worldwide popularity, the Angelica Angel keeps the miracle alive.

Twenty-five years ago the federal government was closing small post offices across the country. The Angelica Booster Citizens did not want to see that happen to their post office, so one of its members, an artist, came up with an idea.

“At Christmastime I would always see on television about how towns named Snow or Bethlehem would be having celebrations. I thought it was a wonderful thing and I wondered why Angelica couldn’t do the same thing,” Pat Kaake the Angel Station cancellation artist recalled.

“A post office is an important part of a small community. I cringe when I hear television ads saying, ‘You’ll never have to go to the post office again.’ A post office is the heart of the community. You just don’t pick up your mail there. You meet people and friends, find out how they are and what they’re up to. You find out what is happening in the community,” Kaake said.

This year the 25th annual offering of the Angel Station cancellation at the Angelica Post Office will debut today, when postal employees will be in the lobby to hand-cancel mail brought in that day.

Customers from other towns are welcome to bring in their mail for the cancellation.

While in the past the celebration included cookies and cocoa, due to spiking cases of Covid there will be no refreshments or gathering.

The Post Office will accept all mail to be postmarked with the Angel cancellation through Dec. 24.

All mail requesting the Angel Station postmark that is received after Dec. 24 will be for collectors only and for only 30 days. Music and the aroma of Korean food will permeate the air when the market opens from 11 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Melodies from Dave Mason’s guitar will entertain with contemporary Americana and seasonal favorites.

Korean/vegan chef Kevin Em will offer dishes that will be on the menu at the new Temple restaurant when it opens in January in Alfred.

Visitors can also take home pies, pastries and other desserts when ScandinavRen’s offers Scandinavian baked goods. Sunny Cove Organic Farm will offer hardy greens, squashes, apples, potatoes, carrots, onions, eggs from free-range chickens and duck and quail meat. Host Mascho Farms’ grass-fed Angus beef and pasture-raised pork and Hints Red Roof Maple Products will round out the local fresh foods.

ScaryAnn will offer woven metal jewelry. EIEIO farm will have woolen yarn while Kellogg’s Alpacas will have purses, hats socks and more.

Radiant Love crafts will have decorative and functional resin pieces.

Vendors will also contribute to several baskets which will be raffled.

Just down the street, on the other side of Park Circle the Angelica Winter Festival will be in full swing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Grange Hall.

Organizer Ron Cobin reports there will be something for everyone, including a visit from Santa Claus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with free photos courtesy of Images IZ. The festival will feature fresh vegetables and those aged to a certain taste by the Ellicottville Distillery.

Crafts including embroidered items by Joanne and crocheted items from Yankee Rose will be offered at the festival. Grateful Tie Dye will

have colorful clothing items.

J and K Krafts will offer wooden toys and functional items such as birdhouses. Petland will have goodies for the pets in your life along with cages, leashes, leads, halters, and collars. The Homestead on the Hill will have a variety of soaps and creams made from goat’s milk.

Food will be available from Max’s Pizza and Country Sweets Bakery will be offering baked goodies for the season.

Cobin said Dunkin Donuts is donating hot chocolate and donut holes.

John Wise will be rockin’ the building with his piano, along with several other musicians throughout the day while the whole event will be broadcast live over Angelica’s community radio station WRAQ. A silent auction is being organized for the festival.

Cobin says the list of vendors and musicians isn’t yet complete, but everyone will be open for business when the door opens Saturday.

With COVID-19 on the rise throughout the county, visitors are asked to wear masks for the protection of everyone.

5 task force gained from the pastors, deacons, lay leaders, educators and parishioners across the region have informed this decision. He said the role of Catholic faith and ministry is essential in addressing so many needs across Western New York, including educating younger generations.

“In combining our resources and refocusing our efforts at the parish level, I am confident that we can be even more impactful in the years ahead in fulfilling our mandate to spread Christ’s Gospel and fulfill our essential mandate of service,” the bishop said.

Input gathering included 26 listening sessions with

more than 800 participants, an online survey with more than 1,300 contributors and many meetings, emails and letters, a draft recommendation for parish families was presented to diocesan leaders in early December 2020.

In March, the Rev. Bryan Zielenieski, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Swormville, was named the episcopal vicar for renewal and development and tasked to lead the renewal effort by Fisher.

“We have had tremendous consultation and collaboration for the Renewal effort,” Zielenieski said. “The family model of parishes intent is truly an intentional discipleship that will bring the best

practices and resources to our parish families by the clergy and laity working together.

We will learn to minister together to increase our impact on our parishioners with a focus on Jesus.”

Following the six pilot families, phase one includes 10 families that will begin working together in October 2022. Phase two with 11 families is scheduled to begin in October 2023 and phase three with nine families is slated to begin in October 2024.

Certified nurse midwife joins Jones Memorial team WELLSVILLE — Certified nurse midwife Tamara L. Chaffee has joined the Jones Memorial Hospital Women’s Health Team and will see patients at the Wellsville and Hornell offices.

Chaffee comes to Jones from Olean Medical Group, where she provided midwifery care. She is a familiar face at Jones, having served as the director of Maternal Health Services and Prenatal Education, and as a certified childbirth educator, certified lactation counselor and the charge nurse in obstetrics.

She was also the office manager for a well-known Wellsville pediatrician, Dr. Zahi Kassas.

Chaffee earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester and completed her master’s in midwifery at Stony Brook University School of Nursing. She is a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives.

Chaffee and her husband, Mike, live in Wellsville and have three grown children, Dakota, Mikala and Noah.

ALFRED — The Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., a private foundation representing faculty, staff and friends of Alfred State College, recently welcomed Ruthanne Ashworth, Ryan Miller, Bradley Smith and Jennie Thwing as new board members.

Ashworth is an associate professor in the nursing department. This is her second stint on the Educational Foundation board after serving 2017-20 and as the public relations chair.

Ashworth received an associate degree in nursing from Alfred State, a bachelor of science in nursing from SUNY Brockport, a master of science in nursing from Binghamton University and is working on her doctorate of nursing practice with an expected graduation in May 2022 from the University at Buffalo.

In addition to her teaching and advising duties at the college, Ashworth continues to work per diem as a nurse practitioner for Delphi Healthcare and United Healthcare. She is nationally certified as a nurse practitioner through American Nurses Credentialing Center and a member of the Nursing Curriculum Advisory Committee.

She has one daughter, Mary. Miller is an assistant director with ACES. He helps oversee all retail-dining units on campus.

Miller received an associate degree from Alfred State in 2001. He is a board member for Lighthouse Christian Fellowship and coaches

youth baseball and soccer.

Miller and his wife, Heather, are the parents of three children, Trinity, Bradley and Noah.

Smith, who will be serving his second term on the board, is an instructor in the Automotive Trades Department after joining the college in 2015. In this position, he instructs first year automotive students.

Smith is also an Alfred State alumnus, having graduated with his automotive service technician degree from the college in 1993.

In addition to his responsibilities at the college, Smith is also currently the commissioner for Troop 16 Arkport Boy Scouts and the Arkport Central School Trap Coach.

He and his wife, Clarissa, are the parents of four children, Aaron, Elizabeth, Anna and Sarah.

Thwing is an associate professor in the digital media and animation department. She teaches animation classes, mentors students and assists in recruiting and program development.

Thwing holds a bachelor

of fine arts in painting and graphic design from Tyler School of Art and a master of fine arts in imaging and digital arts from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Thwing’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions and she has curated numerous multidisciplinary exhibitions and attended residencies in the US, Norway, New Zealand and Canada.

Her work has won numerous awards including the Meyer Family Award for Contemporary Art. She and her husband Eric are the parents of one son, Kirby.

The Educational Foundation of Alfred is a private foundation comprising faculty, staff, and friends of Alfred State, dedicated to improving the college community through support of educational programs. The Foundation provides monetary support to enhance the learning opportunities for students through scholarships, work grants and academic club and curriculum activities.

Professional Pioneers Place opens at Alfred State ALFRED — Students needing professional clothing have a new place to go at Alfred State College. The Career Development Center in partnership with the Kappa Sigma Epsilon fraternity have teamed up to open Professional Pioneers Place.

Leadership Center, has clothing for ASC students to wear when they interview, attend a career fair or need to update their professional photos.

The space has racks of clothing to outfit students. Items include suit jackets, dress shirts and blouses, pants and ties.

Started as a philanthropy project by Jerome Thomas in 2016, TIE has grown into its own club on campus.

The goals of TIE are to provide professional attire to all students on campus and to

provide students with professional services to prepare them for postgraduate education or their career.

Protect your home (and more) from winter’s freeze

But it’s important homeowners also protect their homes in cold weather.

Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage.

Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives.

Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers.

The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors.

Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes.

By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

Have fuel ready Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap.

homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets.

Protect outside Drain birdbaths, clean out downspouts and remove water from other items where water can freeze and cause damage. Inspect roofing prior to the snowy season, but stay off roofs during freezing weather.

Remove snow shovels and other winter gear from storage and make sure the items are easily accessible during snowstorms.

Winter’s bite can be severe.

Homeowners can protect themselves and their properties when the freeze sets in.

Sunburn in the winter?

It’s possible

t’s widely known that prolonged, unprotected exposure to the sun can cause sunburn. Sunburn usually appears within a few hours after overexposure to ultraviolet light from sunshine or artificial sunlamps.

A sunburn is the skin’s response to UV damage.

Sunburn may be minor and evident by redness and pain or, if severe, swelling and blisters may occur. Some people even feel like they have the flu and become feverish with chills.

Even though sunburn is a common occurrence in spring, summer and fall, people may be surprised to learn it is possible to get sunburn in the winter, too.

It’s foolish to stop thinking about sun protection when bundled up in winter clothing. Complete Family Dermatology says the sun’s ultraviolet rays can be just as damaging to the skin when it’s cloudy or cold. In

addition, snow and ice can reflect up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, that means that a person gets hit from two angles: first from the sky and second from the ground, as the rays rebound.

It is important to practice sun safety all year long. Wear

sunscreen on the face and any portion of the skin that is exposed. Also, donning sunglasses protects not only the eyes, but also the delicate skin around the eyes. UV radiation is the leading contributor to skin cancer.

Even though the amount of UV rays decreases slightly in the winter because of the

angle that they hit the Earth, the risk for UV-related sun damage persists. Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30, and even higher when spending time in high altitudes.

Sunburn can occur at any time of the year. Precautions should be taken to protect the skin whether it’s spring, fall, summer, or winter.

Stock the car for roadside emergencies

D

isasters can happen in a flash, and having a plan in place for common emergency situations can make it easier to handle adverse conditions, particularly when away from home.

According to MFASCO Health and Safety, a supplier of first aid supplies and kits, 90 percent of people do not carry first aid supplies or other emergency gear in their vehicles. Among those who may carry supplies, 30 percent never check to determine if they’re in good working order. The National Safety Council says that drivers should always keep emergency supply kits in the trunks or cargo areas of their vehicles. Kits should be inspected every six months, and worn out items should be replaced.

Roadside emergency kits can make the difference between getting back on the road safely or being stranded for hours. Such kits also may help prevent or treat injuries, potentially saving lives. Weather should be considered when preparing vehicle emergency kits, which should include the following.

• A properly inflated spare tire and tire-changing equipment • Jumper cables • A multipurpose utility tool and/or tool kit • Flashlight and batteries • Flares or triangle reflectors • An extra quart of motor oil • A first-aid kit containing at the least, gauze, tape, bandages, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, nonlatex gloves, scissors, hydrocortisone, thermometer, tweezers, and instant cold compress • A blanket • A tire pressure gauge • A portable tire inflator • Paper towels • Nonperishable, high-energy foods • Drinking water • A reflective vest • Duct tape • A fire extinguisher • An ice scraper • A folding shovel • Coolant and washer fluid • A phone charger • Baby/child supplies, if pertinent • Rope Keep roadside emergency kits organized at all times.

crate, box or backpack so they are always readily available.

People should familiarize themselves with the items in the kit so they know how to use them correctly and
