Hundreds of ‘gracias’ on the U.S. southern border

BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — Wellsville teacher Lois Miller and teaching aide Mindi Graham spent their February break offering a helping hand to migrants on the United States’ southern border.

On a cold and snowy Saturday in Friendship the duo climbed into a SUV with their guide, Friar Joe Kotula of Mount Irenaeus, and hit the road for the 36-hour journey to Arizona.

The vehicle was loaded with bundles of nonperishable food packed

by volunteers with BonaResponds. When they made it to Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday night, they stopped for a good night’s sleep, so they would be ready to work on Monday.

Their destination was Douglas, Arizona and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection port of entry.

Their reason for eschewing spring break entertainment was to see for themselves — minus the slant of cable news coverage — what is happening on the southern border.

The next day they arrived at the Sisters of Notre Dame guest house in Douglas,

where they met Sister Judy and where they would spend their resting hours.

They would work with her throughout the rest of the week. The next day, they crossed the border into Mexico where they visited co-ops set up to help migrants make a living while waiting for immigration hearings in the U.S. They are a coffee coop and a carpentry co-op for men and a sewing co-op for women.

“They are incredibly talented and proud of the work they do,” Graham said.

and wooden furniture are sold at craft fairs or in bulk by request.

“When they are released from the detention center they are released back into Mexico, and they must decide whether to return to their homes or wait out the hearing process,” Miller said.

“Right now, the next hearings are scheduled for July.

BOLIVAR — In February, students at Bolivar-Richburg Elementary School participated in the Kids Heart Challenge, raising more than $13,000 for the American Heart Association.

The total amount raised was revealed to students and staff at an assembly on March 10.

To celebrate their hard work, the top fundraiser from each grade level (in kindergarten through the fifth grade) was given the opportunity to put a pie in the face of a teacher of their choice.The schoolwide top fundraiser, Zoey

“It is 20 degrees out and they come into the shelter wearing just t-shirts,” she said. “We gave them coffee and cocoa to warm them up, a meal, a bed, jackets, hoodies, socks and backpacks and any medical attention they might need. Sometimes our Border Patrol isn’t as humane as you would want them to be.”

Miller and Graham were put to work on the 2 a.m. shift. Their first night 90 people came to the shelter, five of them women.

After working in the shelters, Miller noted, “Everyone was so incredibly thankful, from the kids we gave toys to, to their parents. We heard hundreds of ‘gracias’ — thank

yous.”

Miller said she learned that migrants aren’t allowed into the U.S. simply because they are in search of a better job.

“They have to be seeking asylum and there are only five ways asylum is granted: persecution because of race, religion, nationality, political oppression or being a member of a specific social group,” she said. “They have to prove that they are being persecuted.”

While the duo met people of all ages at the shelters and helped entertain the children, they also went on water drops into the desert.

“This was a two-hour, 15- to 20-mile drive into the desert in four-wheel drive vehicles over some very rough and rocky roads,” Miller said.

“We were told that we could find people, injured people, or the remains of people.

These are people who are just following a trail after getting over the wall trying to get to safety.”

The group dropped 20- to 26-gallon jugs of water along with containers full of the

kind of packets assembled by BonaResponds.

“Not one time did I ever feel afraid,” Graham said. “These immigrants are not the rapists, murderers, or drug dealers that you hear about on TV. These are just people seeking a better life for themselves and their families in the U.S.” Miller questioned U.S. policies on immigration when Poland has taken in an estimated one million refugees from the Ukraine in the past two weeks.

Both Graham and Miller, who is retiring at the end of June, say they want to return to the border to help. Miller said that she is interested in teaching at the one-day-aweek school, while Graham said she is interested in helping with the shelters.

“More people need to be made aware of what is happening at our border,” Graham said. “They have the wrong image.”

Looking toward the future, Miller said, “I’m just one of thousands who want to see a change. I can just be myself and do what I can to help.”

Wellsville’s Wine Walk to be uncorked April 9

BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — “Bottle of Wine, Fruit of the vine, When you gonna let me come over?”

Come on over April 9 when the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce will be singing the praises of Wellsville while it brings back its annual Wine Walk.

The Wine Walk is a fundraiser for the Chamber but it is also a fun event that has been well received in the past according to members of the Events Committee. The Wine Walk has been “fermenting” for the last several months while the committee worked to find a date and organize the walk. It wasn’t until February that everything came together, when COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, and organizers were able to set a date. This will be the fourth annual Wine Walk.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bruce Thomas says that while there are many Chamber sponsored events in the pipeline, the Wine Walk has been the one event which took the most time to put together.

“Locations for the stops had to come onboard and those that are not already licensed had to get special licensing from the state Liquor Authority,” he said. “We were uncertain as to how long that would take.”

At last count, more than a dozen local businesses have signed up to be a “stop” on the walk. The list includes the American Legion, Beef Haus, Better Days, Chamber of Commerce, Elks Club, From the Heart, Hart’s Jewelry, The Wellsville Brewing Company, Texas Hot, Salon Visage, The Shop on Main, Office for the Blind and Visually Handicapped and more.

A complete list will be available at registration.

Registration will begin at 12:30 a.m. April 9 at the American Legion, but not a sip will be allowed until the official start at 1 p.m.

Participants will have to come in from the Walk by 4 p.m. After that time the village’s open container law will go back into effect. The regulation was temporarily lifted by the village board for only registered Wine Walkers.

Participation in the Wine Walk costs $30 per ticket.

At registration ticket holders will receive an official ID bracelet and a complimentary wine glass to let authorities and host sites know they are participating in the Wine Walk.

The ticket also allows participants to enjoy two tastings of wine and hors d’oeurves at each location and exclusive discounts at participating stores and restaurants. There will also be a 50/50 drawing.

Participants must be 21 years of age or older. To purchase tickets, go to the Chamber’s Facebook page and scan the QR code which is located there. Or call the Chamber at (585) 593-5080.

Participants are also invited to stop by the office at 114 Main St. during business hours. The Chamber office is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed daily for lunch from 1 to 1:30 p.m.

Looking ahead, the Chamber will host events throughout the rest of the spring and into the summer.

Plans are also underway for autumn.

The Chamber is organizing a Main Street cleanup for May 7. Several businesses, organizations and groups have

already signed up to help, but more are always welcome.

Later in the month, on May 14, the annual Chamber Awards Dinner will take place at the Wellsville Country Club. Call the Chamber office for details.

Evening Under the Stars is back and being organized for June and sometime during the summer the Community Clock will be rededicated.

The Chamber is also organizing the Main Street Festival for the Saturday during the Great Wellsville Balloon Rally weekend, July 15-16.

Plans underway for inaugural Wellsville YMCA charity golf tournament

WELLSVILLE — Registration is open for individuals and teams for the Wellsville YMCA’s inaugural charity golf tournament at Wellsville Country Club on June 4.The day will include a four-person scramble tournament, clam bake dinner, raffles and golf related challenges.

“I am so excited to be able to offer a fun golf outing for our community to benefit the Wellsville YMCA and our cause,” said Tyler Green,

Senior Program Director. “I look forward to building this thing up year over year and providing people with a memorable experience.”

All funds raised at the event will benefit the Wellsville YMCA Annual Campaign.

Howe to step down as CFO for Wellsville, Hornell hospitals WELLSVILLE — Leadership at Jones Memorial and St. James hospitals announced Monday that Jodi L. Howe is stepping down as chief financial officer, effective April 15 to pursue an opportunity at Alfred University.

An interim CFO will be identified by UR Medicine and the two hospital boards.

“At Jones Memorial, Jodi provided vital direction and support during the launch of a capital improvement project as well as the full implementation of our new accounting and enterprise reporting systems,” said Jim Helms, Jones president and CEO.“Jodi has been a key financial leader for both of our organizations during the pandemic, and for that we thank her.”

Howe began her career at St. James Hospital in 2004 as a senior accountant and was promoted to reimbursement/budget analyst in 2006. In 2010 she joined Alfred University as a senior

president of the University of Rochester Medical Center who oversees UR Medicine regional hospitals, and also serves as president and CEO of Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals in Rochester. “We thank Jodi for her service and wish her all the best in her new endeavor.”UR Medicine leadership will provide support and oversight for financial operations at both hospitals during the transition period, as well as assist in the search for a new chief financial officer.
