Wellsville plans $2.1 million athletic complex improvement

BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — This spring the Wellsville school district will start construction on what it is calling a pavilion — but this $2.1 million project is not your grandpa’s pavilion.

School Superintendent David Foster explained that in the 2019 budget voters approved an Athletic Complex Improvement Project to replace an existing structure located at the athletic complex behind the elementary school. The building which clings to the hillside separating the track and football

field on the upper level from the baseball field at the lower level is deteriorating, he said.

According to Dean Giopulos, former Wellsville principal and track coach, the current structure was built in the late 1990s.

“The current building is well past its anticipated lifespan. It was a gift from the Rigas family,” Foster said.

“Its condition is pretty ragged at this time.”

He further explained that the existing building does not comply with American with Disabilities Act requirements and is not up to

current fire codes.

Designed by the Clark Patterson Lee Architects of Olean, the new building will have a much larger footprint and will be a full two stories with outside access to both levels.

One of the biggest improvements the new structure will provide are team rooms for home and visiting athletes.

This is important because currently the athletes gear up in locker rooms inside the elementary school. Once the building is completed visiting athletes will no longer have access to the elementary school which, in this day and

age, is a safety precaution, Foster pointed out.

The new building will also provide storage for athletic equipment which is not currently available so close to the fields.

A new press box/announcer’s booth will serve both levels and volunteers/boosters will be able to offer a wider variety of foods and snacks because the structure will house a full kitchen and griddle with a freezer and storage facility.

JAMESTOWN — Underscoring his commitment to serving his constituents, advocating for rural communities and improving the quality of life across the state, Sen. George Borrello officially announced he is seeking re-election to the New York Senate to represent the 58th District.

The newly configured district, created as a result of redistricting, will encompass Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany and Wyoming counties, as well as a portion of Erie County.

“I am grateful every day for the privilege of serving the people of the Western Southern Tier. This region is my home and there is nothing more important than ensuring its future,” Borrello, R-Sunset Bay, said.

The senator said he feels fortunate that the 58th District will include most of the 57th, with the addition of Wyoming County and a southern portion of Erie County.

“Since being elected to the Senate in 2019, the challenges facing New York have been wholly unprecedented,” Borrello said. “From the public health concerns and economic upheaval related to the COVID-19 pandemic, to the multiple scandals and eventual resignation of our former governor, to the harmful pro-criminal agenda and economic consequences of radical special interest-driven policies, New

York state is a cautionary tale of what can happen when there are no checks and balances in state government.”

Approaching what he called a crucial election in 2022, Borrello said the stakes for New York “have never been higher.” In just three years, he said the damage done by what he called the progressive Democratic leadership has been severe.

“Nothing underscores this more than the disastrous bail ‘reform’ that Democrats forced into law in 2019,” he said. “From day one, the strongest push back against these harmful changes has come from me and my Republican colleagues. One of the reasons that I am running again is to ensure that the momentum we started continues until these critical issues get addressed.”

Borrello said he also wants to continue efforts to advocate for lower taxes and policies that will reverse the outmigration of residents, to protect family farms, to support small businesses and to “bring common-sense” to the state’s renewable energy policies.

Among the achievements Borrello is most proud of is the enactment of Nourish NY into a permanent program, benefiting farmers and food insecure New Yorkers in the years ahead.

When former state Sen. Catharine Young resigned in March 2019, Borrello announced his candidacy for the seat and easily won a special election over Democrat Austin Morgan.

2 Allegany County men killed in collision CENTERVILLE — Two men were killed in a two-vehicle accident the morning of March 11, the New York State Police reported.

At approximately 8:24 a.m., troopers responded to a reported vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 36 and Dow Road.

Following an investigation, it was determined that a 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck

was traveling south on Dow Road and failed to stop at the stop sign. The truck then entered the path of and was struck by a 2015 Kenworth truck.

The operator of the pickup truck, Michael D. Frazier, 71 of Fillmore, and the passenger, Leonard R. Frazier, 76 of Bliss, were declared dead at the scene.

According to troopers,

neither of the victims were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted in this investigation.

The accident was still under active investigation.

Wellsville village to end overnight parking ban on March 31

WELLSVILLE — The village board was able to solve two problems for residents at Monday night’s board meeting.

A suggestion from a high school student taking a government class resulted in a change in parking regulations. Mayor Randy Shayler, at the start of Monday’s meeting, said he had received a letter from a local high school student taking her participation in government course seriously.

“She sent a very wellwritten letter and made a compelling case saying that the parking rules banning overnight parking on village streets from Nov. 1 to April 30 caused a hardship for her family and others,” he said.

The student suggested that the ban be lifted on March 31.

After discussing the matter with the head of public works, Dean Arnold, and Police Chief Tim O’Grady, the mayor motioned that the ban be lifted on March 31 this year only.

O’Grady said he had no objections.

Arnold said, “We’ll give it a shot,” prompting Trustee Mike Roeske to quip, “I’m glad to hear we aren’t going to have any more snowstorms after March.

Arnold answered that he wasn’t making any guarantees, but the motion passed.

Arnold came to the rescue again when Shayler said he had received a letter from a tenant living in the apartment above the village office at 23 N. Main St.

“I received a letter from the tenant’s daughter saying that the banging of the metal clips attached to the village’s flagpole, in front of her window, was disturbing,” he said. “She even included a video, and you could hear the banging of the metal clips. We’ve had a lot of wind lately and this was a valid complaint.”

The matter was promptly taken care of with the help of the electrical department. The metal clips, which weren’t needed, were removed, Arnold said.

The mayor went on to thank all who were involved with maintaining the peace and quiet, including the tenant who brought the problem to the attention of the board.

The board also gave its approval to the police department to purchase a new patrol car to replace a 2016 vehicle with more than 100,000 miles.

The cost of the new Dodge Charger is not to exceed $42,450.

O’Grady said the 2016 vehicle is showing signs of wear and tear and will be sold. The new vehicle will be “marked for patrol” and become part of the five-car fleet.

The board also approved two upcoming fundraisers, the first also repealing the “open container” law regarding alcohol consumption for participants.

The Chamber of Commerce sponsored Wine Walk will take place on April 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants will have identification to exempt them from the open container prohibition as they make their way to the 12 or more

downtown businesses that are participating.

The second event is new to the village, according to Jack Nary, president of the local chapter of America’s Road Guardians. They will host a Ride for Autism on May 21 beginning at 10 a.m. in Island Park. The event will be a 105mile ride for both motorcycles and cars, including stops at Letchworth Pines and the Canisteo American Legion, and will return participants to Island Park for a pulled pork dinner.

At the meeting the board also approved a bid of 99.85 cents per ton for the public works department’s summer paving program. The successful bid came from Dalrymple Gravel and Contracting Co. of Coopers Plains. Arnold said they expect to purchase 2,500 tons of paving material.

Following up on a December 2021 resolution, at Monday’s meeting, Melissa Payne, a representative of Community Action Angels, an ACCORD program, accepted a check from the village’s holiday parking meter donations.

In December, at Roeske’s suggestion, the board approved giving the funds to the CAA for its work at Christmas time. The donation from the parking meters was $1,600 rounded up from $1,574.49.

Payne said the CAA helped 920 people this past season and thanked the board for the donation.

The next village board meeting will take place at 6 p.m. March 28 in the village hall.

New Life tops Park for IAC girls hoops championship AMHERST — Marceline Hutter’s standout game of 18 points and 18 rebounds led New Life Christian to the IAC girls basketball championship via a 33-23 win over Park School on Friday night at Daemen College.

“Our team defense and rebounding was outstanding all night,” NLC coach Sarah Hutter said. “Marceline scored 12 of our 16 points in the second half, including a steal and lay-up at the end of the 3rd quarter that put us up 12.

Hutter also added three assists and four steals, while Sydney Feldbauer neared a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Brightleen Ngunyi added 13 rebounds for top-seeded New Life, which led 7-0 after the first quarter.

“This was an amazing year for New Life Christian School girls basketball,” Sarah Hutter added. “I had

the privilege of working with a team who loved the sport, love each other, and always strive to do their best.”

Hundreds of ‘gracias’ on the U.S. southern border

BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — Wellsville teacher Lois Miller and teaching aide Mindi Graham spent their February break offering a helping hand to migrants on the United States’ southern border.

On a cold and snowy Saturday in Friendship the duo climbed into a SUV with their guide, Friar Joe Kotula of Mount Irenaeus, and hit the road for the 36-hour journey to Arizona.

The vehicle was loaded with bundles of nonperishable food packed by volunteers with BonaResponds.

When they made it to Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday night, they stopped for a good night’s sleep, so they would be ready to work on Monday.

Their destination was Douglas, Arizona and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection port of entry.

Their reason for eschewing spring break entertainment was to see for themselves — minus the slant of cable news coverage — what is happening on the southern border.

The next day they arrived at the Sisters of Notre Dame guest house in Douglas, where they met Sister Judy and where they would spend their resting hours.

They would work with her throughout the rest of the week. The next day, they crossed the border into Mexico where they visited co-ops set up to help migrants make a living while waiting for immigration hearings in the U.S. They are a coffee coop and a carpentry co-op for men and a sewing co-op for women.

The coffee is sold online while the sewing projects and wooden furniture are sold at craft fairs or in bulk by request.

“When they are released from the detention center they are released back into Mexico, and they must decide whether to return to their homes or wait out the hearing process,” Miller said. “Right now, the next hearings are scheduled for July. The co-ops help them make a living.”

While detainees are released throughout the day, Miller noted that the majority are released from 2 to 6 a.m.

“It is 20 degrees out and they come into the shelter wearing just t-shirts,” she said. “We gave them coffee and cocoa to warm them up, a meal, a bed, jackets, hoodies, socks and backpacks and any

medical attention they might need. Sometimes our Border Patrol isn’t as humane as you would want them to be.”

Miller and Graham were put to work on the 2 a.m. shift. Their first night 90 people came to the shelter, five of them women.

After working in the shelters, Miller noted, “Everyone was so incredibly thankful, from the kids we gave toys to, to their parents. We heard hundreds of ‘gracias’ — thank yous.”

Miller said she learned that migrants aren’t allowed into the U.S. simply because they are in search of a better job.

“They have to be seeking asylum and there are only five ways asylum is granted: persecution because of race, religion, nationality, political oppression or being a member of a specific social group,” she said. “They have to prove that they are being persecuted.”

Miller questioned U.S. policies on immigration when Poland has taken in an estimated one million refugees from the Ukraine in the past two weeks.

Both Graham and Miller, who is retiring at the end of June, say they want to return to the border to help. Miller said that she is interested in teaching at the one-day-aweek school, while Graham said she is interested in helping with the shelters.

“More people need to be made aware of what is happening at our border,” Graham said. “They have the wrong image.”

Looking toward the future, Miller said, “I’m just one of thousands who want to see a change. I can just be myself and do what I can to help.”

Furthermore, the droppings left from certain creatures can compromise human health. The best way to stay ahead of potential pest problems is to recognize signs that pests are present.

Droppings A classic sign of infestation, pet waste includes fecal droppings or urine trails.

Certain waste is easier to spot than others. For example, bed bug droppings are much smaller than mice or rat droppings. Homeowners can carry out thorough examinations of furniture, bedding, walls, floors, and areas of the home that get little foot traffic to look for pests.

Dead bodies Another sign that points to pests is the presence of dead insect or animal bodies. A large number is indicative of a pest problem.
