Wellsville village urged to preserve tree legacy

Genesee Valley to present Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ BELMONT — The Drama Club at Genesee Valley Central School will present the hit Broadway Musical “Beauty and the Beast” on March 10-12 in the school auditorium.

“Beauty and the Beast” tells the familiar story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is

actually a prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be returned to his former self.

The cast and production team feature students from fi fth through 12th grades.

“We have a very young cast,” said Donna Slawson,

director of the production.

“They have really stepped up to learn their parts and choreography. I am proud of all of our students for dedicating themselves to this production.”

WELLSVILLE — Members of the village’s tree board want village trustees to increase their budget to preserve Wellsville’s legacy of trees.

The tree board has been in place since 1991 and is part of the Arbor Day Foundation’s requirement for Tree City status, which the village has had for the past 30 years.

Members of the tree board, led by president Susan Duke and vice president Oak Duke, are concerned about a nearly $3,000 decrease in

the amount budgeted for tree care the 2019-20 and 2020-21 village budgets.

Village Treasurer Melissa Mullen said, in 2019-20, the tree board received $4,800 and, in 2020-21, it received $1,900. She said the reason for the decrease was that the village board was trying to save money as it combatted the pandemic, and possibly because of the inactivity of the tree board due to the pandemic. Work on the 2022-23 budget is underway.

Mystic Spirit Holistic Wellness Fair is back in Cuba

CUBA — The Mystic Spirit Holistic Wellness Fair is back with dozens of holistic health practitioners, psychics, mediums, healers and spirit artists and vendors — and in a new location.

The MSHW Fair is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the VFW Reception Hall at 5425 Route 305. It is hosted

by MS Walk Team Michelle’s Supporters. Proceeds from the fair go to the National MS Society of Upstate New York to help in developing treatment and finding a cure for multiple sclerosis.

Belinda Knight is the force behind the fair. Her sister, Michelle Clark, who grew up in Cuba, was diagnosed with MS in 2002. While family and friends have raised more than $85,000 for the MS Walk to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s

research, education and support for MS patients and their families, Knight has taken a different approach.

She is a believer in the holistic and meta-physical approach to health and that there are many ways to achieve good health: MYSTIC: a person who seeks by contemplation and self-surrender to obtain unity with the Deity or the absolute.

SPIRIT: the vital principle or animating force within living things.

HOLISTIC: the belief that the parts of something are interconnected.

WELLNESS: the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal lifestyles that promote wellness.

Knight knew that there is a local interest in the holistic arts and meta-physics and that there is no centralized

venue for information. She decided to bring various practitioners of the healing and holistic arts together to introduce them to the public and to help people find alternative or additional help with health problems, as well as raise funds for MS. The approach was successful. Before the Covid-19 Pandemic the last MSHW Fair was held in 2020. In 2019 and 2020, Knight said, “It was one of the top 20 fundraisers for the MS Society of Upstate New York.”

The fair was held in 2018, 2019 and 2020, but had to be canceled in 2021. This is the fourth annual event. The MSHW Fair has raised $5,269 over the last three events.

Due to circumstances beyond their control the site of the MSHW Fair had to be moved to a different location this year. Clark said she

believes it will be better for the relocation.

“There’s more room and better parking and it is ADA accessible,” she said, adding that the Perfect Blend coffee shop, which served the fair when it was held at the Palmer Opera House, is following the event to the VFW and will be supplying refreshments.

Guests are asked to give a $5 donation at the door.

Inside there will be raffles throughout the day. Tickets will be sold for the multi-item raffle at $5 per sheet with prizes donated by the vendors. Services are purchased from individual vendors and prices are set by each vendor.

All proceeds will be donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society MS Walk 2022.

Angelica campground donates $6,000, supplies to SPCA ANGELICA — The owners of Jones Pond Campground & RV Park, along with some of their seasonal campers, recently visited the SPCA Serving Allegany County to present more than $6,000, as well as donations of goods

and services.

“This is an annual donation we make from funds raised at various events in our park,” co-owner Bryan Schaefer said. “Memorial Day weekend is one of our biggest donation weekends,

where we receive not only funds from our campers but donations of items such as food, cleaning supplies and towels.”

Schaefer, along with partner and co-owner Matthew McCormick, presented a check to Lynda Pruski, the president of the SPCA. They were joined by seasonal campers Jason Heldon, Anthony Mulley, Ty Guarini

and Alec Mattle to share in the ceremony and help bring the donated supplies.

“Without the support and involvement of our entire community, we would not have been able to pull off such an ambitious production,” musical director Lindsay Simpson said.

Students at Genesee Valley are contributing to the show in some unique ways.

Seventh-grader Christina McAuley, in collaboration with Christiansen, has created animations that will be shown throughout the production. Students Sophia and Daphne Gugino will run the sound and lights for the show.

Sophia, who is also a Genesee Valley cheerleader, has taken on the role of choreographer for the dance scenes.

Community members have donated set pieces, sewed costumes, and stepped

in to help in countless ways.

“I’m super excited about the show,” Slawson said. “I’m also super nervous. It’s been two years since our students have set foot on stage.”

Simpson added, “We can’t wait for an audience again.

We are ready to show all the components that have come together for this production.

So much work has been put in to grow back our wonderful drama program at Genesee Valley.”

“Beauty and the Beast” will be presented March 10 and 11 at 7 p.m., and March 12 at 2 p.m. The show is free and open to the public.

Goal reached: Portville downs Falconer in C1 final

BY J.P. BUTLER JAMESTOWN — Ava Haynes dribbled up the right side and threw one last pass to Lilly Bentley, who ran out the clock.

As the final buzzer sounded, the Portville girls basketball team broke out in celebration, teammates wrapping one another in hugs, coach Inga Welty emracing each of her twin daughters.

In this moment, a number of storylines had become solidified.

The first and most important was the one Welty and the Panthers had waited a decadeplus to achieve: Portville, behind 24 points from Mallory Welty and a strong defensive effort, topped league foe Falconer, 44-33, for the Section 6 Class C1 championship.

THE TITLE, made a unanimous goal in the preseason with three Big 30 all-stars back and reached Saturday at Jamestown Community College, was Portville’s first in 13 years under the elder Welty and the first as a program since 2006. But there were so many other significant subplots that came with it.

Welty was able to share this win, the Panthers’ 20th of the season, with her two senior daughters on the court, another on the bench as an assistant and two nieces in Teagan Kosinski and Kendall Artlip.

It marked the 30th anniversary, nearly to the day, of when Portville won a sectional title with Inga as a star player in 1992.

And it included a remarkable showing from Mallory, who was unable to play in the Panthers’ semifinal win over Silver Creek due to a knee injury, and not only made her return against Falconer just two days later, but played every minute and had one of her biggest scoring outputs of the year.

For Portville, it was a special day, indeed.

“We write out our goals at the beginning of the year … and everybody’s paper was identical even though they don’t do their sheets together,” Inga said. “Everybody’s like, ‘we’re winning a sectional title

this year. This is our turn, our year, we have what we need, we’re gonna be able to do it.’

Sharing it with my girls (including Mia) is amazing, sharing it with friends, my two nieces, and then my daughter on the bench.”

She added, “It’s funny because (former teammate Janna Norton Davis) said to me, ‘30 years ago, Inga, this was us,’ and I didn’t think about that, but it was, right around now in 1992, this was us. I remember that feeling and I’m just excited that my girls and their friends get to experience it as well.”

NO. 2 PORTVILLE (20-3) swept Falconer in the regular season en route to a league title.

But on this biggest stage of the year, it was able to churn out its most convincing victory of the three.

Portville held a 13-8 lead after the first quarter and pushed it to eight midway through the

second. And though Falconer used a late run to trim the Panthers’ lead to just four (2117) at halftime, it was clear Welty’s team had control.

And it maintained that edge with defense. Portville kept the Golden Falcons below 30 points until the final minute of regulation and limited leading scorer Grace Lundmark, who’d been averaging 16 a game, to less than half that (7 points). That offset any dry spells the Panthers might have had offensively.

“At halftime, we went into the locker room like, we just held them to 17,” Welty said.

“Granted, we’re getting good shots and they’re not falling like we want them to and we’re still winning. But we’re doing great on the defensive end. I didn’t think we could do better, and then we came out in that third quarter and held them to four. We exceeded what my expectations could have been for the third.”

So. Tier residents urged to complete broadband survey Residents are encouraged to complete a state broadband survey to help determine the accessibility, reliability and affordability of high-speed internet in the Southern Tier.

“The pandemic laid bare how important access to high-speed, reliable internet is to our community,” Sen. George Borrello, R-Chautauqua County, said.

“Access has always been a problem, but the digital divide became a digital chasm as people were forced to work from home and their children went to remote learning. The prevalence of ‘internet deserts’ is one of the biggest challenges facing our rural communities.”

The New York State Department of Public Service will use the survey results to map broadband infrastructure across New York State and identify communities in need. The results of the survey will also help counties, towns and villages advocate for additional federal and state support for broadband expansion projects. The survey deadline is Friday, March 18.

Tree board member Tom Reuning, who spearheaded the school’s Arbor Day celebrations while teaching at the elementary school, said that with the decrease in the budget it would be difficult to plant many trees.

He went on to say that the village should adhere to its tree plan because of the benefits trees offer, such as increased property values, cooling effects, beauty, air quality and community interaction.

In his most recent report, forester Bruce E. Robinson recommended that plantings should exceed removals over the next 10 years.

Responding to the plea, Mayor Randy Shayler said, “Let us get our heads together to see what we can do.”

Urging the board to be cognizant of the consequences of their decision, Duke said, “We are stewards to these trees. We can’t think just 10 to 15 years into the future.

Some of these trees will be here for hundreds of years.

I want you to really look out for these trees. It’s not just me. I want you to think about our legacy for our community and the future.”

Duke also told the board that in the spring two trees will be planted in memory of Tim Walsh and Pat McKinley with a donation from the Emerald Hook and Ladder Company.

Donations may be made to the tree board to dedicate a tree in honor of someone. The approximate cost is $200 for a tree, but all donations are accepted.

continued from 1 In the past the tree board has overseen new plantings, removal of dead and diseased trees and organized activities to celebrate Arbor Day. During the pandemic, only one tree was planted in 2020-21 and the Arbor Day celebration was curtailed, although it did take place.

The Arbor Day activities are coordinated by the elementary school and hosted by the fi fth grade. Fifth-grade teachers Stephanie Viglietta and Rachel Gunzburger also attended the meeting in support of the tree board.

Viglietta pointed out that tree plantings and Arbor Day celebrations are handson learning experiences for the students, allowing them to interact with community leaders.

“I can still tell you where the tree my class planted is located,” she told the village board during its meeting late last month. “It is something the kids can take pride in.”

Susan Duke outlined the cost of purchasing just one tree to be planted in the village — about $200, depending on size and variety and whether the tree has balled or bare roots. The village public works department digs the holes for the trees to be planted. She noted that from experience cheaper trees with bare roots do not fare as well as those with balled roots.

“We might better plant one good tree with balled roots than three trees with bare roots that are going to die in a couple of years,” she said.

The trees for planting are recommended by a forester, who produces an extensive report on the health and condition of all the village trees every two to three years.

The trees are purchased from a nursery near Springville that is recognized by the Cornell Cooperative Extension for its quality.

Angelica campground donates $6,000, supplies to SPCA ANGELICA — The owners of Jones Pond Campground & RV Park, along with some of their seasonal campers, recently visited the SPCA Serving Allegany County to present more than $6,000, as well as donations of goods and services.

“This is an annual donation we make from funds raised at various events in our park,” co-owner Bryan Schaefer said. “Memorial Day weekend is one of our biggest donation weekends, where we receive not only funds from our campers but donations of items such as food, cleaning

supplies and towels.”

Schaefer, along with partner and co-owner Matthew McCormick, presented a check to Lynda Pruski, the president of the SPCA. They were joined by seasonal campers Jason Heldon, Anthony Mulley, Ty Guarini and Alec Mattle to share in the ceremony and help bring the donated supplies.

Drivers delaying vehicle maintenance Many drivers recognize the importance of vehicle maintenance, but a significant percentage of drivers are putt ing off taking timely care of their cars and trucks. IMR Inc. surveys 25,000 households each quarter, asking participants how they have serviced and maintained their vehicles. In the fi rst quarter of 2020, much of which occurred prior to the

declaration of a global pandemic, nearly 18 percent of respondents indicated they had delayed vehicle repairs or maintenance. IMR classified “delayed maintenance” as repairs and maintenance that vehicle owners intentionally put off despite knowing the vehicles needed them.

That conscious decision to delay maintenance and repairs could prove costly in

the long run, as adhering to a routine maintenance schedule is a great way to ensure cars stay on the road longer.

In addition, adhering to manufacturer-recommended

maintenance schedules is a great way to discover minor issues before they escalate into larger, more costly concerns.

Treatment Options for COVID-19 Now Available BELMONT, NY – As we continue to combat COVID-19 infections throughout the state and in Allegany County, we want to inform the public that there are treatment options available. Each of these treatments have proven to be effective against COVID-19 and are available throughout New York State. Treatments can be organized into three categories which are outlined below: Pre-exposure Prophylaxis.

To be given to those who are immunocompromised or otherwise unable to get the COVID-19 vaccine prior to being diagnosed. Product: Evusheld.

Monoclonal Antibody Treatment. Provided via IV soon after diagnosis (within

7 days of symptom onset).

Currently authorized products include: sotrovimab & bebtelovimab (ONLY if none of the preferred therapies are available, feasible to deliver, or clinically appropriate) Antivirals. Administered soon after diagnosis either via IV (within 7 days of symptom onset) or orally (within 5 days of symptom onset). Products include: remdesivir (IV), Paxlovid (oral) & molnupiravir (oral).

Since treatment options are now available and supply continues to increase, if a person tests positive for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), the Allegany County Department of Health encourages individuals to speak with their Primary Care

Provider to evaluate all treatment options as early as possible. The ACDOH does not have access to these options at this time and you are encouraged to speak directly with your healthcare provider.

Availability of these medications in Allegany County and surrounding areas (all except remdesivir) can be found using the COVID-19 Therapeutics Locator.

Red Cross of WNY marks Red Cross Month The American Red Cross of Western New York is honoring volunteers this month, which is Red Cross Month.

“When emergencies strike, our community rallies together to help families and individuals when it matters most,” said Nicholas Bond, regional CEO of the Red Cross in WNY. “We honor this dedication during our Red Cross Month celebration, and we invite everyone to turn their compassion into action by donating, volunteering, giving blood or taking a lifesaving skills course.”

Recognize Red Cross Month by visiting redcross. org to make a financial donation, give blood, become a volunteer or take a class in lifesaving skills, such as first aid and CPR. March 23 is the annual Red Cross Giving Day campaign to help provide shelter, food, relief items, emotional support

and other assistance for people affected by disasters big and small.

Across the 27-county footprint of the Red Cross of WNY, volunteers have responded to more than 900 home fires, providing assistance to more than 1,600 families. They’ve opened shelters in the wake of fires, floods and severe winter weather and donated more than 122,000 units of blood and provided 3,487 case services to support military members, veterans and their families.

To support the Red Cross, March Mission Madness is set for March 27-April 2, in which bidders will have a chance to in get-a-way vacations, gift cards, merchandise and services donated by organizations and individual supporters from across the region.

Keep seasonal allergies in check There is much to look forward to when springs arrives. Daily hours of sunlight increase while temperatures continue to climb. Blooming flowers and leaves budding on trees also add some aweinspiring color back into the landscape. Even though there’s much to enjoy about spring, one side effect of so much foliage in bloom is the return of seasonal spring allergies.

Many people fi nd they cannot enjoy the sunshine and balmy temperatures of spring because of seasonal allergies. Hayfever, or allergic rhinitis, is a common spring

allergy.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology indicates allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year.

The Aerobiology Research Laboratories says allergens in the air across Canada have been rising in many cities over the last 15 years.

While there is no cure for seasonal allergies, there are steps individuals can take to live with them more comfortably.

• Stay indoors on dry, windy days. It’s better to go

outside after it rains, which clears pollen from the air.

• The ACAAI urges individuals to modify indoor environments to keep allergens out. An HEPA fi lter in HVAC systems can better trap spores.

• Consider vacations near the ocean or other bodies of water, as pollen counts tend to be lower in these areas.

• Delegate lawn mowing and other tasks that involve stirring up allergens to someone else. If you must do gardening and landscaping, wear a face mask to fi lter out some allergens.

• Close windows or doors

when pollen counts are especially high.

• Wash hair and clothes when coming indoors to rinse out allergens that would transfer to pillowcases or furniture.

• Speak to an allergist who can recommend medications or other treatments that can improve seasonal allergies.

Corticosteroids reduce inflammation and antihistamines can help reduce sneezing or itchy eyes.

Seasonal allergies are a potential pitfall of the spring season. However, there are remedies that can help alleviate the suffering.
