Wellsville village police to aid ARVOS/Ljungstrom

BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — The village police will provide supplemental coverage for ARVOS/Ljungstrom, the village board agreed Monday evening.

Mayor Randy Shayler explained that the village received a request for mutual aid from ARVOS/ Ljungstrom after state police had a long response time to

two incidents that recently took place there.

“They identified as a problem that it took roughly one hour for the state police to respond, with the local police so close,” Shayler said, while not discussing the nature of the call. “It could have been more of a problem.”

The ARVOS/Ljungstrom complex is located at 3020 Truax Road in the Town of

Wellsville. In October the company received a multimillion-dollar contract that is expected to add approximately 100 jobs to its present 1,600.

“They will supplement, not supersede the state police,” Shayler said of the village police agreement, adding, “I would be surprised if it is ever used but and agreement needs to be in place if it

GCC Foundation and Chair Mickey Hyde Announce Date For Classic Scholarship Scramble BATAVIA, NY— The Genesee Community College Foundation and Cougar Classic Scholarship Honorary Chairperson, Mickey J. Hyde ‘87, have confirmed the 7th Annual Cougar Classic Scholarship Scramble will take place on Monday, July 18, 2022 at the Stafford Country Club, 8873 Morganville Road (Rte. 237) in Stafford.

Hyde, a resident of LeRoy, earned an associate degree in Business and Marketing from GCC in 1987 when he was also named the College’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his participation in baseball and bowling. As a baseball player, he was named to All-District, All-Region and All-Conference teams. After graduation, he played five seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies organization, culminating in a call up to Triple A Scranton Wilkes-Barre in 1993. During his career, he was named the Phillies Minor League Player of the Month in April 1991 and that year was named the Phillies “Outstanding Player of Spring Training.” Hyde earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. In 2003, he joined Tompkins Bank of Castile

What maintenance schedule does my car need?

Vehicle maintenance schedules vary depending on manufacturer recommendations. In addition, the way a car is driven and the environment it’s driven in can dictate if routine maintenance like oil changes needs to occur more frequently or if belts and hoses need to be replaced sooner than manufacturers recommend.

Many people drive in ways that align with routine maintenance schedules. However, drivers who put excessive wear and tear on their vehicles may have to follow a “severe” maintenance schedule.

According to the automotive information site Car Gurus, many manufacturers adhere to a 30-60-90 schedule,

meaning certain items need to be inspected, changed or replaced at 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles. Certain vehicle parts wear out at predictable intervals, while others, such as rubber gaskets, windshield washer blades and tires, will degrade at irregular intervals.

It is generally recommended to speak with a mechanic and discuss driving habits to ensure vehicles operate efficiently and at peak capacity.

The following are some conditions that may necessitate frequent maintenance.

• Urban driving: Stop-andgo traffic in an urban setting can wear cars out more quickly than highway driving.

Experts say lubricants found in motor oil break down rapidly under these and other conditions, including especially hot temperatures.

• Short trips: Frequent, short trips can take a toll on a vehicle. Again, this may be a problem for those who reside in cities or bustling suburbs.

Short trips of no more than five miles can contribute to an accumulation of water vapor that dilutes motor oil and adversely affects its efficacy.

• Heavy loads: Advanced

Auto Parts says transporting or towing heavy loads can put more wear and tear on a vehicle. Loads can include cargo or passengers.

• Dusty or salty environments: Dust can accumulate in air filters and clog internal engine components.

Similarly, living close to the coast and salt water also can cause car parts to rust or degrade quickly.

• Extreme temperature conditions: People who reside in extremely cold or

extremely hot climates may find that their vehicles have to work that much harder to operate, reducing the life span of automotive fluids, parts (especially car batteries) and the overall vehicle unless action is taken.

For those who frequently encounter these severe

conditions, switching to a severe maintenance schedule with the guidance of an automotive service shop can help. The added cost of more frequent fluid changes and other maintenance can be recuperated by fewer breakdowns and the reduced need for potentially costly repairs.

Tragedy & triumph: B-R shines on mats while mourning losses

BY JEFF UVEINO Wrestlers, coaches and parents from BolivarRichburg sported matching t-shirts at Saturday’s Section 5 State Qualifier.

On the front, each read “BR STRONG” in large white print, with “Wolverine wrestling” in red capital letters below. On the opposite side, instead of unique name plates, “Coleman” stretched across each member of the program’s back.

The Wolverines, as they did the Saturday prior, enjoyed a momentous day on the mat. In the midst of one of its most successful postseasons in program history, however, B-R mourned two tragedies that shook its wrestling community.

MOST EVENINGS, if you drive up Salt Rising Road in Bolivar, you’ll find a busy building lined with wrestling mats — the Wolverine Den. Whether it be summer or winter, in-season or out, youth, varsity and collegiateaged wrestlers spend hard hours drilling at the Bolivar youth program’s popular facility.

Several coaches line the mats, directing athletes of varying skill levels. The group often included Dylan Pesock, a former standout at Oswayo Valley who went on to wrestle two years at Mercyhurst North East.

Pesock, a Shinglehouse native who competed at states for the Green Wave in 2018, turned to coaching to satisfy his passion for wrestling. He had grown up in the Bolivar and Shinglehouse youth programs, and after college, became a regular mentor for B-R’s lightweights.

Eric Coleman, meanwhile, was as consistent a coaching presence as any at the Den. He often worked with B-R’s advanced wrestlers, lacing up his shoes to either teach technique or wrestle live.

On Feb. 1, Pesock passed away from injuries sustained in an automobile accident the night before. He was 21.

A week later, Coleman was involved in an automobile accident in Ohio, and passed away from his injuries Feb. 9.

He was 41.

BETWEEN the accidents, B-R claimed its third Section 5 Class B team title in four years. The Wolverines ran through the tournament at Lyndonville, producing five individual champions, 218 team points and both Most Outstanding Wrestler

awards.

As they did so, they remembered Pesock. “Tonight, we wrestle for Dylan,” stretched across each Wolverine’s chest in bold, black letters.

Team title in hand, B-R turned its attention to the state qualifier. Nine Wolverines would compete at the tournament at SUNY Brockport, and with Pesock’s memory fresh in their minds, a mix of emotions fueled their practices.

Then, Taylor got a phone call regarding Coleman.

Tragedy had struck again.

“The kids were already in an emotional slump from the process of (Pesock’s) passing, and then to get hit with this,” Taylor said. “I had a sit-down talk with them all and told them, there’s a reason why stuff like this happens. I don’t know what the reason is, but let’s do everything we can to show those guys that aren’t with us anymore what we’re capable of.”

Coleman’s son, Ethan, is a sophomore on the B-R wrestling team. At 138 pounds, he was among the favorites for a trip to Albany entering the state qualifier.

Ethan Coleman finished second at Brockport, earning an automatic bid to states. As he defeated his opponent to secure second place, he pointed to the sky.

In a nearby section of bleachers, dozens of fans with his name on their backs were ready to greet him.

“We wanted Ethan to know that we’ve all got his back, we’re all family, and if one of us is going to hurt, we’re all going to hurt,” Taylor said.

“I’ve talked to him a little bit, just telling him that we’re all here for him if at any point during the day he needs to call us just to talk. That’s how all the kids are on the team, too.”

Ethan Coleman will be joined by teammate and junior 215-pounder Trent Sibble at the state tournament. In all, B-R placed six wrestlers at the state qualifying meet, and will send its fourth and fifth state representatives since 2018 to Albany.

EACH STATE rep, plus dozens of the program’s sectional champions over the past decade, were touched by Pesock and Eric Coleman. “(Eric Coleman) was the old-fashioned guy who would take notes,” said Gary McDowell, who runs the Wolverine Den and serves as head coach of Bolivar’s

youth program. “He’d carry around index cards before every tournament or match we went to. He’d take notes on those wrestlers, then he and I would have conversations after the tournament. We’d do the pros and cons of every match for every wrestler, then go through what they had to work on.”

Eric Coleman would spearhead much of the teaching at youth practices, using his knowledge of the sport to demonstrate moves and help young wrestlers perfect their positioning. He had been actively involved with the program for nearly seven years, shortly after the inception of the Den. “Every one of the kids that I have, Eric has been involved with on and off the wrestling mat,” Taylor said. “He was a good leader, and he was one of those guys that, when he spoke, you listened and he was probably right. He was fun and he was hard-nosed.

All the kids took very well to that.”

Eric Coleman’s wrestling knowledge was vast, but his attitude was equally contagious.

“He always brought positive energy — it was about lifting kids up,” McDowell said. “His smile, his laugher, his knowledge — he always wanted the best out of the kids. I think that’s why they enjoyed working with him so much.”

Pesock touched the wrestlers in a similar way. Still active in the sport himself, Pesock seamlessly conveyed his college-level craft, and relayed some of his go-to moves into his mentees’ repertoires. “(Pesock) was always the fun one every time he was around,” Taylor said. “It didn’t matter who you were or where you came from; he was buddies with whoever was around. Every time there was practice, he was there. To say that about a 21-year-old kid that has a bunch of friends,

and to see him up there working with these kids and pushing them, that said a lot about the kind of kid he was.”

Pesock competed in an open tournament at Jamestown Community College the day before his accident. There, after taking down an opponent with a slick dump, he immediately requested video footage of the move from his father.

He wanted to show Gary McDowell, Jr. McDowell, Jr., an 8thgrader wrestling at 102 pounds for the Wolverines, had been working diligently on his dumps with Pesock over the previous three weeks. Now, Pesock had an example to share.

“To me, that was a special moment showing how much love Dylan had for these kids,” McDowell said. “He wanted to take his own matches and show them, look, I’m wrestling in college and this move is working. Trust me, it can work for you, too.”

When sectionals came, Gary McDowell hadn’t yet relayed the footage to his son, and hadn’t told him that Pesock wanted to share his video. In McDowell, Jr.’s first match, however, he proceeded to dump his opponent to his back and stick him.

Afterward, he saw Pesock’s version.

Later in the tournament, Teegan Sibble found herself trailing in the third period of her finals match. She had recently been working with Pesock on shot setups and taking opponents down to their backs.

As the third-period clock waned, Teegan Sibble threw her opponent to his back for a four-point move, clinching a 5-3 victory. She became the first female in history to win a Section 5 wrestling title, and also the first to win Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Perhaps her late mentor fueled her offense.

“(Pesock) had a love for the sport that was unlike any other,” Taylor said. “He was at every home match and even traveled to some of the away matches, just to be there for the kids. They all looked up to him.”

Practices at the Wolverine Den will go on — McDowell and a staff of committed coaches including Shane Sibble, Nate Mitchell, Terry Bentley, Tracy Bentley, Randy Cimino and others will see to it. The varsity program will persevere, as well, as Taylor and his staff guide two wrestlers onto the state tournament.

They’ll do so, however, without two significant pieces.

“Eric joined our team and worked with our advanced

and older kids in the room, and he called it home and became family,” McDowell said. “He individualized a lot of wrestlers one-on-one before and after practice to really help them with their technique. He was a very knowledgeable wrestler, very positive and always encouraged.”

Pesock was laid to rest Tuesday, four days ahead of the state qualifier. Coleman was laid to rest Monday.

“We have received phone calls from people all over the state of New York and Pennsylvania,” McDowell said. “Not only did they enjoy (Coleman and Pesock) as people, they know the love our team had for them and what they meant to our program and our wrestling room.”

1 COVID-related death in Allegany County

BY BOB CLARK BELMONT — Allegany County officials reported a 92nd COVID-19-related death on Monday.

The Allegany County Department of Health reported that a 96-year-old woman recently passed away due to complications or a consequence of the illness. The death was the first reported by county officials since Feb. 7.

State Department of Health officials — tracking deaths only in state-licensed facilities like hospitals and nursing homes — have reported 146 deaths among county residents in statelicensed facilities, while 88 people have died in facilities in the county. The last

state-reported death notification was made Wednesday.

As of Sunday, 10,163 cases have been reported, including 26 on Friday, 16 on Saturday and 27 on Sunday.

County-reported figures include data from at-home positive tests, while state figures are solely for laboratoryreported tests. State officials reported 13 cases on Monday, with a total of 8,636 — up 132 from the previous Monday — since the pandemic began in March 2020.

State officials reported that 7.3% of tests over the past seven days were positive, down from over 10% the week before.

Techniques to revitalize a lawn after a long winter Pristine, snow-covered landscapes can be wonders to behold. While that blanket of white is idyllic, a lawn’s delicate blades may be paying a hefty price beneath the cold, heavy piles of snow.

Snow plows push salt and sand up on the grass while subterranean animals like mice and moles dig burrows beneath piles of snow as they try to find food and stay warm. Such conditions are not favorable for thriving landscapes. When the spring thaw arrives, lawns may be in dire need of some TLC. The following techniques can mitigate winter-related lawn damage.

• Clear out debris. Remove any scattered leaves, branches and other debris that has been strewn across the property due to storms or snowladen trees. This will give you a clean canvas to work on.

• Dry out snow mold. The Family Handyman says snow mold is a cold-season fungus that causes gray-colored circles or patches on the lawn where there has been snow.

To alleviate snow mold, rake the lawn to loosen matted grass and facilitate the drying-out process.

• De-thatch the lawn.

Heavy snow can compress the grass and cause some of it to die off. De-thatching helps to remove dead grass blades and separate any matting. This enables water, nutrients and air to reach the lawn’s roots more effectively. Thinning out old organic matter also helps encourage new growth.

• Aerate the soil. Coupled with dethatching, aeration involves loosening the soil or poking holes to allow nutrients to move freely to the roots.

• Kill weeds before they spread. Weeds may be the first to start growing when the weather begins to warm.

Address them promptly by manually pulling them or applying an herbicide.

• Overseed the lawn.

Chances are there are some bare spots that have formed over the winter. Overseeding can help to fill in the lawn.

Make sure that frosts are largely a thing of the past and soil temperature is around 50 F to 60 F before seeding.

Water daily until grass fills in.

• Apply nutrients.

Fertilizer and compost can restore nutrients to the lawn that may have been used up over winter. A soil test at a nearby horticultural center can tell you which nutrients are needed, according to the Chemistry Cachet, a guide to using chemistry secrets for healthy living, beauty, cleaning, and gardening.

Lawns can be restored to their pre-winter glory after some sweat equity and about five to six weeks of consistent sunshine and warm weather.

UR Medicine affiliates join system-wide electronic health record system

WELLSVILLE, NY — UR Medicine affiliates Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, Noyes Health in Dansville and Geneseo, and St. James Hospital in Hornell will adopt a new electronic health record (EHR) platform on March 5, 2022, the same EHR used at UR Medicine’s Strong Memorial Hospital and other affiliate organizations, Highland Hospital in Rochester and Thompson Health in Canandaigua.

For the more than 2 million residents of Rochester, the Finger Lakes region and the Southern Tier served

by UR Medicine, the alignment of patient records and patient care activities on the Epic platform, known at UR Medicine as eRecord, and the expansion of its use in the health system is part of an on-going effort to increase access for patients to health care services throughout the region, strengthen and enhance patient safety and quality of care, and work more efficiently.

The move to a standardized EHR means patients will be able to see information from their visits with providers at all UR Medicine-affiliated Urgent Care, primary care and specialty care practices through UR Medicine’s online patient portal, MyChart.

Through the website, mychart.urmc.edu, or mobile app, patients can access provider’s appointment notes, medication lists and test results, appointment information and Urgent Care waittimes. They will also be able to request prescription refills and communicate directly with their provider’s office to ask questions and complete pre-appointment paperwork.

MyChart also allows patients easily to pay and keep track of their bills online, which will be presented as a consolidated summary of charges from four affiliate facilities: Noyes Health, St. James Hospital, Jones Memorial Hospital and Thompson Health. Anyone can sign up for a MyChart account at any time at mychart. urmc.edu.

“For the past ten years, our EHR has become an

increasingly valuable tool in assessing the health care needs of the communities we serve,” said Steven I. Goldstein, senior vice president of the University of Rochester Medical Center who oversees UR Medicine regional hospitals and president and CEO of Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals in Rochester.

“With all of us working in the same EHR, we will be able to transition care more easily between local services and specialty care, with each provider and each location having a complete picture of the patient’s health and treatment needs.”

The multi-year integration effort was supported in part by New York State Health Care Facility Transformation Program grants to

each individual hospital totaling $12 million. Leadership and staff at St. James, Noyes and Jones worked with their peers at the University of Rochester Medical Center to secure the funding, and plan and implement the new system. UR Medicine contributed the remainder of the funding for the project.

“We are grateful to the New York State Department of Health and our state legislature for recognizing the importance of this kind of project which connects community-based and rural health care organizations with the specialty expertise of an academic medical center,” said Goldstein, “and to UR Medicine leadership who prioritized and enabled this project.”

“As a practicing physician, I know firsthand the value of eRecord. With all of us across the UR Medicine system on that one platform, our teams simply will be able to collaborate more effectively, both in terms of patient care and administrative oversight,” said J. Chad Teeters, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of Noyes Health.

Noyes Health and Jones Memorial Hospital joined Thompson Health and Highland Hospital as affiliates of the University of Rochester Medical Center and became part of the UR Medicine health system in 2016. St. James Hospital formally affiliated in 2018.
