he county was created on March 26, 1804, from part of Lycoming County, and named for Governor Thomas McKean, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. When created, McKean County was divided into two original townships of nearly equal size, Ceres and Sergeant. Ceres Township contained the northern two-thirds of the current McKean County, while Sergeant contained the southern third and parts of what are now Cameron and Elk counties. In 1810, the U.S. Census reported only 142 residents of McKean County. With the exception of Sergeant Township, all early settlements were located along the Allegheny River and its major tributaries. By 1810, settlements had been established on the Allegheny River at Corydon (Corydon Township), Allegheny Bridge (Eldred Township), and Morrison (Hamilton Township); and on Potato Creek at Farmers Valley (Keating Township). By 1815, Canoe Place on the Allegheny (Liberty Township) and the Norwich Township settlements

Settlements in the Tuna Valley along Kendall Creek and near the state line were in existence by 1825 (Bradford Township). As the lumber industry spread, Turtlepoint in 1836 (Annin Township), Prentisvale in 1842 (Otto Township), and Marshburg (Lafayette Township) in the 1830s, were settled. The land was densely forested, and land transportation was difficult. The waterways were the key transportation routes. Oswayo Creek and the Allegheny River were considered as highways very early, and the Tunungwant Creek was declared a public highway in 1828. Continued

County Land Composition

The lumber industry began in earnest in the 1830s, and prompted settlements and the organization of municipal governments. The settlement of the isolated central and southwestern portions of the county occurred very late, nearly a half a century after the original settlements. This area was occupied by the followers of Thomas Kane (Hamlin and Wetmore townships). Finally, in 1880, Foster Township was divided from Bradford Township. In southwest McKean County, large tracts of the isolated and landlocked area were purchased by Thomas L. Kane of Philadelphia. The territory was surveyed in 1859, and the village of Kane was founded in 1860. Further development was delayed by the Civil War. Settlers in McKean County were pro-union and anti-slavery. In fact, the King settlement above Ceres was an important depot on the underground railroad, while Smethport was a way station. Kane, very concerned with the preservation of the Union, organized a volunteer unit and just nine days after President Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers, The Bucktails were on their way to Harrisburg. The regiment traveled on rafts down the Sinnemahoning to the Susquehanna. The unit claimed to be the first volunteer regiment organized for the defense of the Union. The regiment became one of the Civil War’s most famous. After the war, Kane returned to develop the town which bore his name. After the completion of the Erie-Philadelphia railroad, and the rapid construction of rail lines, McKean County was no longer isolated. The rapidly growing lumber industry was cause for some excitement, but the decade of the 1870s would forever change McKean County — the discovery of oil in paying quantities.

The county population burgeoned from 8,825 in 1870 to 42,565 in 1880. Highways and bridges were built, newspapers were formed, communities expanded and services provided. Related industries grew which eventually were able to absorb many of the oil workers unemployed as a result of the decline in the oil fields. As early as 1861, oil had been found in McKean County. However, because the drilling was not deep enough, commercial quantities were not found. Late in 1874, the first large producing well in the field was struck northeast of Bradford on the Buchanan farm. It was the first big producer — 70 barrels a day — drilled in the soon-to-be-famous Bradford third sand. By 1881, the Bradford field set an all-time maximum production of 23 million barrels of oil. For several years, McKean County led the world in the production of petroleum. Other important industries developed as well, including lumber — sawmills, tanneries and wood chemicals — and railroads. By 1925, the county was largely deforested. Much of the land was purchased by the public. The Allegheny National Forest was established in western McKean County in 1923. The glass industry developed in the same time frame, and from 1895 to 1905, McKean County led the nation in glass production. Other industries included coal in Mount Alton, Marshburg, Clermont and Betula and shale-brick in Lewis Run during the 1920s. The entire history of what McKean County was to become was shaped during the several decades near the turn of the century.

Messages from the McKean County Chambers of Commerce

Hello from the Kane Chamber of Commerce! Although the Covid-19 pandemic definitely put some projects on hold, in Kane we were able to see growth, too. The Kane Historical Preservation Society commissioned a beautiful piece of art to delight residents and visitors at the intersection of Routes 6 and 66. Created from nails, it is a mother wolf and her pups, made to pay tribute to legendary Dr. McCleary for saving the lobo wolves. The Kane VFW Post 1132, Kane Borough, Parks Commission and architect Dave Conklin from Kane Lawn & Garden worked together to revitalize Memorial Point at Evergreen Park. It was dedicated on Memorial Day 2021. This is a sacred place in Kane to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. If you haven’t seen either of these new additions, plan to take a trip to Kane this summer to check it out. While you’re here, dine at one of our many restaurants and shop at our unique retail stores. New things are always happening here in Kane! Save the date for Kane’s Wine Walk on August 6th to benefit the Chamber! And check out our neighbor’s big events: Ludlow Days on July 10th – 11th and The Mt. The Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce was established on December 18, 1882. The incredible history of the chamber started in the midst of the Oil Boom occurring in the hamlet of Bradford. Because of the history of the Bradford Oil Fields, Bradford grew and became the Oil Metropolis of the world. The Chamber still stands strong today. We serve to promote and support local business, large or small. We do this in a variety of ways including our Bradford Chamber Gift Certificates, which keeps money local in our small business’ community. We also provide networking events, education and most importantly facilitate collaboration. The Chamber works with other agencies to help facilitate tourism to our area. Hunting, fishing opportunities abound in McKean County By JIM ECKSTROM jeckstrom@oleantimesherald.com Hunting and fishing are ingrained in the culture of McKean County, from small game and turkey to deer and bear hunting and from fishing for trout in mountain streams to walleye and muskie in the Allegheny Reservoir. There is fishing to do year-round in the county, but “trout season” remains a big focal point for anglers. The season was expanded in 2021 to begin April 3 — about two weeks early. Tens of thousands of trout — mostly rainbows and browns — are stocked in McKean County’s waters. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission details the dates and stretches of stream for stocking on its website beginning in the winter. Stocked trout waters are open through Labor Day with a daily limit of 5 trout; extended season periods, Jan. 1-Feb. 28, and after Labor Day through Dec. 31, allow 3 trout per day. Consult PF&BC regulations for size limits. There are also special regulations areas that limit the number of trout that can be taken as well as the tackle that can be used for fishing. There is no closed season for bluegills, pumpkinseeds and perch, while bass — smallmouth and largemouth — can be fished for throughout the year, with only April 17-June 11 in 2021 closed to the keeping of any bass. Again, consult PF&BC regulations for size limits. Muskie and pike may be taken all year (40-inch limit for muskies and 24-inch limit for pike). Walleye may be taken Jan. 1 through March 14 and May 1 through Dec. 31 (consult regulations for size and daily limits). All fishermen and women age 16 and

older need a license (except on posted free fishing days), and a trout stamp must be purchased to fish trout waters. McKean County has tens of thousands of acres of forest and woodlands open to the hunter — including state and federal lands as well as private forestland open to the public in cooperation with the state. In the early fall, the first opportunity to hunt is for squirrels, beginning Sept. 11 and with a special season for supervised junior hunters set for Sept. 11-25. Ruffed grouse season opens in October, as do seasons for cottontail rabbits and pheasants, with many of the latter stocked by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for the season. Fall turkey hunting begins Oct. 30. As is the case with squirrels, there are special days set for mentored youth to hunt for grouse, rabbits and pheasants — consult the PGC’s regulations and hunting dates. Archery season for deer is set for Oct. 2-Nov. 13; Sunday, Nov. 14; Nov. 15-19; and Dec. 27-Jan. 17. The state allows one antlered deer per hunting license year, with antlerless deer allowed with each required antlerless license. There is also a muzzleloader season for antlerless deer Oct. 16-23. The regular firearms season for deer gets underway Nov. 27 and runs through Dec. 11. The traditional flintlock season is Dec. 27-Jan. 17. For black bear, there is an archery season Oct. 16-Nov. 6; a muzzleloader season Oct. 16-23; and the regular season, Nov. 20-23. There are also youth hunting opportunities for deer and bear — consult the PGC regulations and dates.
