talented students during Music in Our Schools Month by attending in-person or watching online.

“Pirates of Penzance” & “The Mikado” will be presented Friday, March 26 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 28 at 2 p.m. “Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be presented Saturday, March 27 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 28 at 4 p.m.

“Pirates of Penzance” is about Frederic, who is released from his apprenticeship into the arms of some upstanding pirates. Here, he meets Mabel and the two, naturally, fall in love. A monkey-wrench is thrown into their love story when it is revealed Frederic was born on Feb. 29; therefore, he is not yet 21 and must stay an apprentice to the pirates for

another 63 years.

“The Mikado” is about Nanki-Poo, a royal who has banished himself from his hometown and is disguised as a peasant. He falls in love with a woman named Yum-Yum but she is set to marry her guardian, Ko-Ko. However, Ko-Ko

SPRINGVILLE– On February 7, 2021 the Assembly of God Church hosted Scout Sunday for the Springville Scouting Community. The celebration was organized by Chaplain Caleb Edbauer, SPL Christopher Jozwiak and Liam Smith all members of BSA Troop 524. The Boy Scouts of America designates Scout Sunday as a day to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. On this day, the scouts in the local community came together to worship and demonstrate the importance of scouting.

Pastor Stan Handzlik led the worship service and gave an

inspirational sermon speaking of the characteristics of Old Testament prophets Caleb and Joshua. These strong bold men were sent out to scout and explore the land for the people. It was their Godly commitment which set them apart from the rest of the scouts. When a challenge came to the scouts who were sent out, it was only Caleb and Joshua who remained committed to God. Caleb and Joshua understood they were called by God, acted in faith, and kept confidence in God. They stepped out in faith and

Gowanda house recommended for state, national registers of historic places

The Kimble-Nellé House was the Second Empire-style brick home of Nellé. Born in 1894 as Zdislaw Antoni Nellé, he led a long and prolific career staging hundreds of ballets, jazz dance numbers, operas and dance numbers for revues, cabarets and films.

State and National Registers listing can assist owners in revitalizing properties, making them eligible for various public preservation programs and services, such as matching state grants and state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.

For the past nine months, current Kimble House owners Damian Mordecai and Nick Weith have been working to completely restore it. They discovered it through two Instagram accounts that post about old, affordable houses looking for someone to bring it back to life.

“This house was close to where I work, which we hadn’t seen before,” said Weith, 26, the Food Service Director for

Program to help farms develop small-scale hatching program Raising poultry on a small scale has become more and more popular and Cornell Cooperative Extension is teaming with the Penn State Extension in offering a program in April to help farmers get their best results.

CCE’s Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program (SWNYDLFC) and Penn State Extension will present “Pips to Peeps: Virtual Hatchery School.” The program will be presented by Amy Barkley, CCE livestock and beginning farm specialist, and Emily Shoop, a Penn State Extension poultry specialist.

Through the program, participants will learn how to develop a small-scale breeding and hatching program. The program includes three lectures and virtual, interactive laboratories on topics including the basics of breeding flocks, incubation and insight into hatch rates and resulting chick quality.

Classes will be held three consecutive Saturdays, starting April 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The lab will be a walk through an incubation room and incubator set-up, as well as a candling demonstration.

April 24 — Hatch Rates and Chick Quality The lecture will be on how to differentiate good and poor chick quality and determine how breeder flock and hatchery management affect this. Participants will learn the different reasons for “failure to hatch” and what hatchery residue can reveal about the incubation process.

The lab will focus on hatchery residue and chick quality.

Seneca president welcomes Haaland confirmation as Interior secretary IRVING — Seneca Nation President Matthew Pagels said he hopes the confirmation of Deb Haaland as secretary of the Interior — the first Native American to hold the post — is the start of a “new era of inclusion, understanding and respect” for the concerns of Native peoples.

“On behalf of the nearly 8,500 enrolled members of the Seneca Nation, I want to congratulate Secretary Haaland on her confirmation,” Pagels said in a statement after Haaland’s confirmation on Monday.

“This achievement not only speaks to her knowledge, skill and leadership as a lawmaker, but it is also a seminal moment for Native people throughout the United States,” Pagels said.

Haaland, a member of New Mexico’s Laguna Pueblo, was approved by the Senate 5140 in her confirmation.

Lastly, we meet the mechanicals: Bottom, Quince, Snout, Starveling, Flute, and Snug.

The unifying event of this band of characters is the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. In the end, all works out to show that love truly does conquer all.

County officials release data on 2020 overdoses MAYVILLE– Officials from Chautauqua County’s Department of Mental Hygiene and Department of Health and Human Services today released data on rates of overdoses and overdose deaths in the county in 2020. Consistent with trends across New York State and the nation, non-fatal overdoses rose dramatically in Chautauqua County in 2020. Overdose fatalities also increased, but at a much lower rate than the rise in non-fatal overdoses, an outcome county officials attribute to effective harm reduction, emergency, and treatment efforts undertaken during the pandemic.

“Every death related to this pandemic, whether directly or indirectly, is tragic,” said Pat Brinkman, Chautauqua County Director of Community Mental Hygiene Services.

“Reports from our region and the nation are revealing the toll the pandemic has had – on physical health, certainly, but also on emotional health and on substance use. While Chau-

tauqua County has not been immune to these trends, we are extremely grateful for the life-saving efforts of individuals and agencies in our county who have helped address addiction throughout this difficult time. As a result of their work, lives have been saved.”

Data from the Overdose Detection and Mapping Application Program (ODMAP) system, a public health monitoring tool used to alert communities to changing overdose patterns, indicates that Chautauqua County experienced a 54% increase in non-fatal overdoses from 2019 to 2020. Over the same time frame, overdose fatalities rose 18%, from 33 in 2019 to 39 in 2020. In contrast, media reports indicate that Erie County (NY) experienced a 49% increase in opioid related overdose deaths in 2020, and Niagara County’s overdose deaths more than doubled.

“One overdose death is one too many,” said Christine Schuyler, Chautauqua County public health director. “The

efforts of our many partners throughout the county has kept an increase in fatalities from being even worse. This data reveals that emergency, harm reduction, treatment, and outreach efforts, all undertaken in the midst of a pandemic, are helping. We plan to continue working with partners throughout the county to build on these efforts to help more county residents who are battling addiction.”

Borrello, NY Senate GOP: Lift curfew for bars, restaurants ALBANY — State Sen. George Borrello and the minority Republicans in Albany continued their push to have the governor’s 11 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants rescinded.

Borrello, along with Senate Republican Leader Robert Ortt of North Tonawanda and Assembly GOP Leader Will Barclay of Pulaski, introduced March 22 a concurrent resolution to rescind the curfew.

In November, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued Executive Order 202.74 that imposed a 10 p.m. curfew for bars, restaurants, gyms, fitness centers and other facilities throughout the state. The order was made as COVID-19 resurged in the state after it had tamped down over the summer.

Earlier this year, Cuomo eased the curfew to 11 p.m., and just last week lifted it for

gyms, fitness centers, casinos, movie theaters, bowling alleys and billiard halls beginning April 5.

The governor left the curfew in place for bars and restaurants, saying it would be reevaluated next month.

Borrello, of Sunset Bay in Chautauqua County, said Cuomo’s “revoked” emergency powers remain in place and are “profoundly harmful” to bars, restaurants and hospitality businesses, which continue to struggle under hours-limiting mandates.

“Without a doubt, the 11 p.m. curfew is one of the most glaring examples of an unjustifiable, unscientific edict,” Borrello said. “Yet, despite having no impact on the virus, the curfew has had a terrible impact on the bottom lines of countless small businesses in the hospitality industry and

their hardworking employees by reducing the number of patrons they can serve each evening, compounding the effect of capacity limits.”

The senator added that similar curfews are disappearing in neighboring states and New York needs to follow suit.

Ortt said the arbitrary rule remains in effect “at the whim of one man — our embattled governor — and they continue to harm our small businesses.”

Earlier this month, New York’s GOP senators introduced another concurrent resolution to rescind Cuomo’s mandate that prohibits bars and restaurants from serving alcoholic beverages to patrons who do not order food.

So far, Democrats have not allowed the resolution to the floor for a vote, despite indicating support for doing so on March 5.

Rep. Tom Reed apologizes, plans to retire following misconduct claim U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, has ruled out a challenge to embattled Gov. Andrew Cuomo after reports of his own sexual misconduct surfaced.

First elected in 2010, the congressman in the 23rd Congressional District, which includes Allegany County, announced he won’t seek any elected office in 2022 after a former female lobbyist came forward with claims that he drunkenly fondled her during a party four years ago.

Nicolette Davis said Reed unhooked her bra and touched her thigh while the two were in a Minneapolis pub during an event in 2017.

After first declaring the allegation was inaccurate, Reed, 49, said in a statement that the incident occurred “at a time in my life in which I was struggling.” He said he entered treatment that year and realized he was “powerless over alcohol.”

“I was wrong, I am sorry, and I take full responsibility.”

“Consistent with my recovery, I publicly take ownership of my past actions, offer this amends and humbly apologize again to Ms. Davis, my wife and kids, loved ones, and to all of you,” Reed said.

Earlier this year, Reed considered running against Cuomo and was one of many politicians from the Empire State demanding the governor step down following multiple alle-

gations of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct.

The lawmaker cited an obscure pledge he once made not to serve more than six terms, but the timing of the announcement left little doubt that it was related to Davis’ misconduct claim.

Reed voted against impeaching former President Donald Trump in January but voted in favor of certifying the 2020 election of Democrat Joe Biden.

Weith said the home buying process was normal, for the most part, aside from working on a driveway agreement with the neighbor as they share a part of it before it splits to each of the garages.

“We didn’t know the age originally,” he said of the house’s history. “Our best guess based on a history profile of the town was the 1870s. We now believe, based on more research, death records and census information, that the house was built/completed in 1875 by Charles Kimble.”

Mordecai, 40, who currently lives and works in Buffalo, said they had renovated houses before but never restored one, something he thinks they both initially hoped to do.

“Most of my experience has been with the interior of houses, taking them down to the studs and building them up, but that’s not what we will do with this house,” he explained.

“This house has so much potential and we’d like to keep as much of the architectural integrity as possible.” NW: Originally from Arlington, Texas, Weith said he grew up with a family that fixed something multiple times before throwing it away and bought something newer. In the past house he owned, he said he tried to respect the simple mid-century architecture of the 1950s brick ranch, although it did involve some modern work.

This time, Weith said they are trying to respect as much of the house as they can without making it look like a museum.

There’s no plans to take walls down, replace any woodwork or design features that are orig-

inal to the house.

“We took on this project to try to challenge ourselves with something far different than either of us have done before,” he said. “Exterior work is new to us. And the careful treatment of every part of the house is also making us learn new skills we take with us for future projects.”

WHEN THEY bought the house last June, they each owned their own houses that they bought before, both of which were still being worked on. Weith said he decided to sell my house in Tonawanda, but Mordecai wanted to finish the bigger projects on his house before cracking open a new can worms.

“These projects kept us from really getting started on the house until this year,” he explained. “COVID also kept us busy with Damian’s work adjusting to part-time in person in the fall and school starting back up for me.”

Since then, two duo managed to repair some leaks on the roof, chop down a horde of trumpet vines attacking the house and pull off much of the rotted wood from the built-in gutter system and cornices that help give second-empire houses such character, Weith said.

In the past few months, they’ve worked on stripping wallpaper off rooms and stripping the dozen layers of paint on the trim throughout the house. Weith said they’ll wait until the roofing and gutter system work is done this summer to do any major finishing work inside.

Looking ahead, Weith said much of the work that still needs to be done is the plumb-

ing to most of the upstairs, a new water main to the street, the gas lines, re-slating the roof, repointing washed out mortar on the north side of the house, re-glaze and restore the wood windows and repair damaged plaster.

Because the pandemic has really shaken things up in terms of long-term goals, Mordecai said their goal right now is to just get the house restored.

“It feels great knowing that this designation could encourage future owners to continue preserving the house,” he said.

“It’s nice to know that we are bringing recognition to a small town like Gowanda and showing that rural towns have a rich history which deserve to be preserved,” Weith added.

The State and National Registers are the official lists of buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, objects and sites significant in the history, architecture, archaeology and culture of New York and the nation.

There are more than 120,000 historic properties throughout the state listed on the National Register of Historic Places, individually or as components of historic districts. Property owners, municipalities and organizations from communities throughout the state sponsored the nominations.

Once recommendations are approved by the commissioner, who serves as the State Historic Preservation Officer, the properties are listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and then nominated to the National Register of Historic Places, where they are reviewed and, once approved, entered on the National Register.
