Springville-Griffith Institute Announces New Superintendent of Schools

Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force announces virtual and in-person Narcan use training schedule ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) and the Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force are announcing the next three months of trainings to recognize the signs of an opiod overdose and use Narcan (naloxone) to reverse an opiod overdose.

All participants will receive a free Narcan kit after the training is complete.

Virtual training participants will need a computer with Internet access or a smartphone with the ability to access WebEx. Additional in-person trainigns will be announced. SPRINGVILLE,NY — The Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District Board of Education has selected a familiar face to be the school district’s new superintendent.

James E. Bialasik, a 1999 district graduate and principal of Springville-Griffith Institute High School,

will assume the leadership role on Jan. 7, 2022 following the retirement of Kimberly Moritz, the district’s superintendent since 2015.

Bialasik has served as the high school principal for the past six years and has been heavily involved in district-wide tasks such as budget design, contract

negotiations, and the recent proposed capital improvements project, which was approved by taxpayers on Sept. 28.

“As someone who has called the Springville community home for most of my life, having the opportunity to serve our district in this new capacity is an incredi-

ble honor,” said Bialasik. “I couldn’t be more proud of the work that we have done over the past six years and I welcome the opportunity to continue those efforts with our Board of Education, administrative team, faculty, staff and community. Our students deserve the very

Christmas in Gowanda preparations set for Saturday

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA, NY — The Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing for the 2021 Christmas In Gowanda celebration.

Centered around the downtown business district, the annual celebration of the Christmas season is also the kickoff of the chamber’s “Shop Local” campaign heading into the holiday season.

While Christmas In Gowanda remains a Saturday-only event in 2021, many of the familiar in-person activities are scheduled to return. In 2020, the event was downsized from a Friday and Saturday schedule of activities to a Saturday-only one with parts of it being done virtually.

On Dec. 4, Gowanda’s New York & Lake Erie Railroad will be running the Santa Express train rides starting at 11 a.m. with additional trips at 12:30, 2 and 3:30 pm.

Tickets are $22. Additional information can be found at nylerailroad.com.

The Hollywood Theater will be showing a children’s movie at noon that will be repeated at 5 p.m. Also starting at noon, the Gowanda Free Library will be hosting an adult’s and kid’s craft time until 2 pm. From 3-4:30 p.m., the Gowanda Moose Club will be hosting an ornament creation craft session. Horsedrawn wagon rides will begin

at 1 p.m. along with police car This very popular event is Main Street. This event is sponsored by the Gowanda Assembly of God and the tree will again be donated by the Dixieland Tree Farm. The tree lighting should begin around 7 p.m. with the annual Holiday Spirit parade following afterward.

Starting around 7:30, the parade will head back into the downtown area for the Christmas Fireworks display. This will be visible from the downtown area near the square. Gowanda’s Wicked Glen on Water Street will be holding an Ugly Sweater Party as the outdoor events conclude.

Little Valley church relaunched as Bridge of Hope

BY DEB EVERTS LITTLE VALLEY — The Little Valley First United Methodist Church, located at 109 Court St., is now known as Bridge of Hope.

The congregation welcomed the public to share in the relaunch activities, beginning with a worship service Nov. 28 followed by a time of celebration and fellowship.

Church member Glenda Campbell said the name change won’t be official until their paperwork is accepted. She said some research also has to be done to be sure another church isn’t already using the name “Bridge of Hope.”

According to Campbell, the Methodist conference closed the church for seven months due to COVID-19 restrictions but it has been allowed to reopen. She said 20 to 25 members were attending services on a week-

ly basis.

A declining attendance prompted a relaunch, as directed by district superintendent Suzanne Block.

Campbell said the active church members needed to regroup and search for God’s guidance on where the church was headed.

“Some decisions had to be made. We asked ourselves if we should continue to remain open or should we close the church, so we went through a relaunch,” she said. “It took us seven months and, during that time period, eight of the members participated in a conference program called Launchpad.”

The purpose of the program was to assist the congregation. Campbell said the group met weekly, via Zoom, and the program guided them into discovering God’s plan through ministry and how to put that vision into place.

“At the same time, we were having a Wednesday night Bible study that was being taught by the district superintendent,” she said.

“The lessons were from the books of Acts and Ephesians, with the focus being on Christ’s church, and it was open to everyone.”

In spite of the declining numbers in membership, some members have remained active behind the scenes since the beginning of May. Campbell said they’ve been meeting every Thursday night as a group discussing reopening, revisioning, renaming the church and starting over.

She said they have spent many hours in Bible study and prayer putting a lot of effort into this plan. It’s been a huge commitment for everyone involved.

Part of the relaunch includes new programs.

Campbell said they are currently doing a Faith Circle

on the first and third Monday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Memorial Library of Little Valley.

She said the program is being held at the library, rather than the church, because people sometimes don’t want to come into the church but are willing to go somewhere else.

“Over the summer, we did some community based activities to try to get a feel for what the community wanted from a church and how we can meet the needs of the community,” she said. “We had some success and some failures, but we learned a lot. We learned that the younger generation doesn’t feel the church is relevant today, so we have to find a way to make church relevant and appealing to them and all ages.”

Campbell said the whole point is to take church out of the church building and take Christ out to the streets. She

said the focus should not be inside the building because it’s not about the building.

The group is studying from a program called the Wired Word. Campbell said it confronts today’s news with scripture and hope. She said the topics come from today’s news so the lessons are current and relevant. They are going to continue with the Faith Circle featuring the Wired Word on the first and third Monday of the month.

“If we find there is interest, we’re hoping to start a simple discipleship pro-

gram, ‘The Purpose Driven Life,’ by Rick Warren,” she added. “It’s a basic program on what it means to be a Christian and how it’s relevant today. We need to make it relevant today.”

The church currently does not have a pastor and the congregation is searching for one. Campbell said a handful of church members have been taking turns leading the worship services.

Audubon Cuts Ribbon on New Wildlife Habitat JAMESTOWN,NY – Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) recently had a quiet ribbon-cutting on the Pamela A. Westrom Wildlife Habitat (PAWWH) that will soon showcase a variety of birds of prey that are found within the region.

A graduate of Jamestown High School, Northeastern University and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Pam Westrom was an environmentalist, pilot, sky diver, scuba diver and hang-glider, but her passions were sailing and birding.

Audubon Executive Director Leigh Rovegno said, “We want to recognize Pam for leading a life that was inspired by nature, and we are so grateful to her for providing the funds that allowed us to create this incredible new facility!” Westrom’s brother, Curt Westrom, and his wife, Susie, of Bemus Point, New York, participated in the ribbon-cutting.

Rovegno thanks the Westroms, “For encouraging us to dream far bigger than the original small enclosure we were thinking of, for trusting us to create something that truly honors Pam’s memory, and for investing in ACNC’s future and commitment to providing real and healthy connections to nature.”

The Lenna Foundation, Scott Electric, and the Cummins Foundation are recognized for providing funds to help cover increased construction costs due to COVID and to purchase necessary items to furnish the preproom: refrigerators, freezers, sinks, storage, and such.

The Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation recently awarded a grant that will provide funding for a paved access

trail around the new enclosures which will increase accessibility for visitors.

Hundreds of individual donors believed in the project and contributed through Give Big Chautauqua and the 2021 ACNC Birdathon fundraisers.

It took many people and organizations to complete the project. ACNC Education Coordinator Sarah Hatfield was construction manager.

Animal Care Specialist Kim Turner designed the building, and over the past year has been participating in weekly training with Tamarack Wildlife Center as part of the licensing and permitting process.

Then-Senior Nature Educators Jeff Tome and Katie Finch were in charge of landscaping, access, and educational interpretation.

C&R Construction, who built the project and was present at the ribbon-cutting, is described as “Contractor Extraordinaire.”

Buildings and Grounds Manager Terry LeBaron, Jerry Hildom, and the ACNC OWL Volunteers assisted with various tasks, such as mounting the plaque and making adjustments to the structure as needed.

While the interior of the

building is complete, work remains to be done before residents can move in. Turner is completing her required number of training hours, and permits have been submitted to acquire birds.

Audubon is waiting to hear about the permits to complete the aviaries to the needs of the individual birds.

For instance, a large hawk would have different perch sizes and needs than a small hawk, so ACNC has to learn about the bird to create what they need.

The acquisition process is slow, but the hope is to have birds sometime next year.

In the meantime, the public is welcome to visit Liberty, Audubon’s non-releasable Bald Eagle, in her outdoor enclosure next to the Pamela A. Westrom Wildlife Habitat. Liberty can be viewed from dawn to dusk daily, at no charge.

Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, N.Y., and Warren, Pa. You can enjoy the grounds and use the six miles of trails for hiking, snowshoeing, or cross country skiing for free from dawn to dusk every day as well.

Center building houses interactive displays, a collection of live animals including the Hellbender exhibit, the 2021 Nature Photography Contest winners, and the Blue Heron Gift Shop. Visitors are welcome Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Sundays, 1 - 4:30 p.m.
