That lead was at 7-2 before Wilson began to put up some serious resistance. The gap closed to 8-6 before Gowanda runs of three and then four points opened it back to 16-8.

Fairly even play from that point saw Gowanda go up 2-0 in the match with a 25-16 win.

In Game 3, Gowanda took the first three points before a service error put Wilson on the board.

Taking six of the next seven points, Gowanda took control 9-2. Two Wilson four-point runs eventually closed the score to 11-10. Gowanda held them off not allowing the lead to slip away. From a score of 14-13, Gowanda ran up 11 straight points to gain a 25-13 win in the game and close out the match 3-0. Gowanda leaders on the day were Rachel

GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity volleyball team entered the Sectional playoffs as the second seed in Class C2. Nov. 1 saw the team host a semi-finals meeting with No. 6 Wilson.

Gowanda came out strong in Game 1 racing out to a 6-0 lead.

That soon reached a 9-2 score.

Wilson managed to slow Gowanda’s progress, but couldn’t mount a comeback. With the score 22-11, Gowanda stopped a small Wilson run. A Rachel Colantino ace moved the score to 24-11. Wilson stalled the inevitable for the next point only lose the game on a serve that went out of bounds for a 25-12 Gowanda win.

Sports Report continued from 1 Portville in the finals. Portville opened Game 1 taking the first two points on the way to a 5-1 early lead.

Gowanda closed that to 5-4, but that was the best they could do. Beyond that point, Gowanda couldn’t put together back-to-back points while Portville had no trouble stringing points together. That included two 8-point runs on route to a 25-7 Game 1 victory.

The story was much the same for the rest of the match. Gowanda had their only lead of the night 2-1 early in Game 2. The game was close up to a 3-2 Portville lead, but the inability to put points together haunted them going forward. This would be Gowanda’s best game of the night just barely managing double digits for a 25-10 loss.

By Game 3, the stress of the night had taken a toll on

Gowanda. Portville took the first four points and never looked back. Soon it was 8-1.

This last of three very fast games ended, very similarly to the previous year, with Portville taking a 3-0 sweep in the match with a final game score of 25-6. Probably the worst news for Gowanda fans is that Portville only had two seniors on their roster this year. For Gowanda, team leaders were Mary Denea (2 aces, 1 dig, 1 kill), Ella Luther (1 ace, 2 digs), Cameron Nagel (2 kills, 1 dig) and Jill Gernatt (5 assists).

— The Gowanda cross country teams were at Knox Farm State Park on Nov. 5 for the Section 6 Championships. Gowanda competed in Group D. For the boys, Gowanda finished 7th of seven schools. Top runner for the team was Drew Shull who finished 13th in 18:45.82. The Gowanda girls finished 6th of six schools.

Even so, Gowanda did have two girls finish in the Top 20, Calie Hudson (6th, 21:38.28) and Autumn Pupo (18th, 23:17.85).

Hudson’s performance qualified her for the New York State meet at Chenango Valley State Park on Nov. 13.

Assistant coach Rex Brown noted that she will be the first girl from Gowanda in the last 10 or 11 years to qualify for the state meet in cross country.

Cross Country teams from Springville and Silver Creek competed in Group C at the meet. For the boys, Springville placed 9th and Silver Creek was 14th among 19 schools. Top runner for Sil-

ver Creek was Gabe Rhodes (39th, 19:26.53) and for Springville was Liam Smith (42nd, 19:27.70). In the girls race, Silver Creek was 10th and Springville was 11th of 15 schools. Top 20 finishers for the two schools were, for Springville, Hannah Goetz (2nd, 18:58.66) and Kirsten Melnik (4th, 19:33.64) and, for Silver Creek, Ava Emke (15th, 22:00.51) and Melanie Wilson (18th, 22:11.24).

Silver Creek-Irving Heritage Fund Awards Grants DUNKIRK, NY — The Silver Creek-Irving Heritage Fund (SCIHF) recently awarded community grants to two local organizations.

Anderson Lee-Library received a $3,400 grant to purchase approximately 250 new books to update the Junior Nonfiction book collection.

A $600 grant was awarded to the Village of Silver Creek to support the 2022 Music in the Park concert series. The 6-concert music series will begin on June 14, 2022.

The SCIHF, a Community Donor Advised Fund of the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, provides grants to support

new community initiatives, leadership development, and other charitable programs that address the most pressing issues within the Silver Creek-Irving community.

Their motto is “Remembering Our Past – Securing Our Future.” As an endowed fund, the SCHIF will continue to make grants in perpetuity. The fund was established by community residents and others interested in enhancing the Silver Creek-Irving community. Contributions may be made to the fund in any amount and at any time.

The deadline to submit applications for grants from the SCIHF is September 20 of each year. For more in-

Cattaraugus County unveils $262.6M tentative budget for 2022

LITTLE VALLEY — The tentative $262.6 million Cattaraugus County budget for 2022 includes an additional $14 million in spending and a tax cut for two-thirds of the cities and towns.

County Administrator Jack Searles outlined the proposed budget to a special meeting of the Cattaraugus County Legislature on Nov. 3. The 2021 county budget was $248.5 million.

“Taxes are not going up in a municipality as a result of the (county) levy, but by the equalization rate,” which goes down if assessors do not keep up with property valuations, Searles said.

The increase in property values was another factor in keeping tax rates down. The town of Ashford’s property values increased 14.9%, Machias was up 12.4%, Coldspring, up 11.4%; South Valley, up 9.7%; East Otto, 9.6% and Leon, up 9.3%.

The full value assessment increased by 3%, or $149.34 million to $4.975 million, while the taxable value assessment increased $86.6 million, or 2.2%, to nearly $4.02 million.

The 2022 tax levy is pegged at $55.2 million, about $500,000 lower than the $55.7 million levy, or amount to be raised by property taxes. It is well below the state’s 2% tax cap, Searles pointed out.

Total revenues are up $12 million over 2021.

Those revenues include $5 million in additional sales tax revenue — $3 million of which would go to the general fund and $2 million to the County Road Fund.

The budget calls for $8.5 million to come from the county’s fund balance, or surplus, to help fund the budget, including just under $2.5 million to reduce the tax levy, about $60,000 higher than last year. About $5.4 million from surplus will go to the county’s Pines nursing homes in Olean and Machias.

One revenue not in the budget again this year is Seneca casino revenue sharing payments. It has been five years since the county received any casino money as the Seneca Nation’s fight over the terms of the gaming compact remains mired in the courts and with the U.S. Department of the Interior.

No funding is included in the budget from opioid settlements either because not enough is known about the amount, the timing and any restrictions on the payouts.

Funding from the $14.7 million the county is receiving from American Recovery Act is being kept separate from the 2022 county budget.

The full value tax rate in the $262.6 million budget is $11.40 per $1,000, a 40 cent decrease.

The 2022 tax rate in the city of Olean would drop 2.3% to $12.76 per $1,000.

The town of Olean would go down 3.4% to $16.57 per

$1,000, Allegany would go down 3.4% to $11.68 per $1,000, the town of Portville would go down 3.38% to $12.91 per $1,000 and in Hinsdale the tax rate would go down 3.43% to $13.06 per $1,000.

The Labor Relations and Human Services committees were expected meet to review the budget beginning Monday. Development and Agriculture, Public Works and County Operations meet starting at 3 p.m. Nov. 15, and the Finance Committee meets at 6 p.m. Nov. 18.

A public hearing on the budget has been set for 5 p.m.

Nov. 23, followed by a vote by county lawmakers.

NORTH COLLINS — Officers with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Law Enforcement are seeking the identity of a pheasant hunter involved in a shooting incident with another hunter on Oct. 28 in the Zoar Valley Multiple Use Area.

Investigators inter-

viewed the victim following the incident, which occurred in Erie County. The hunter was struck with pellets from a round discharged by a fellow pheasant hunter.

Although the victim spoke to the hunter who fired the round, DEC said he was unable to recall the subject’s name or contact information.

Why are keyboards not in alphabetical order?

The reason dates back to the time of manual typewriters. When first invented , they had keys arranged in an alphabetical order, but people typed so fast that the mechanical character arms got tangled up. So the keys were randomly positioned to actually slow down typing and prevent key jams.
