After several unsuccessful drives for both teams, Gowanda got a big break with 2:52 left in the first half. Winter Rivera intercepted a Frewsburg pass and returned it for a Gowanda touchdown. The 2-point conversion run was good and Gowanda grabbed the lead 8-7. Gowanda followed that with a successful onside kick, giving them a new drive starting on their own 49. three points gave Ellicottville the 25-17 win and tied the match at two games each. In the final game, it was all Ellicottville, starting with a 4-1 lead before growing that to 9-2. Gowanda got as close as 10-5 before Ellicottville nailed down the final five points for a 15-10 win, taking the match 3-2. Leading the Gowanda effort were Holland Browning (19 digs, 14 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks), Aubrie Heron (6 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces) and Jada Geiger (5 kills and 1 block). The volleyball team returned home for their Senior Night on Oct. 19 for a game with Silver Creek. Seniors Aurora Stevens, Gao:Wisa:S Stevens, Lani Farley, Jada Geiger and Josalyn Degenfelder were honored before the game. After grabbing a quick 4-1 lead, Gowanda slipped back into a 4-4 tie. Things stayed close through a 15-15 tie. From there Silver Creek pulled into a 21-15 lead. Gowanda fought back and tied the game at 23 before Silver Creek scored twice to take a 26-24 win in game one. Gowanda rebounded to take wins in the next three games by scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-21. The 3-1 win in the match left the team with an 11-3 record for the regular season, good enough for a bye in the first round in Section 6
Class D and a quarter-final home game. — The Gowanda boys and girls cross country teams were at Falconer with Fredonia/Westfield and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley on Oct. 18. For the boys, Frewsburg finished in first place with a 31 followed by Fredonia/Westfield (47), Gowanda (56) and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley (97). Drew Shull (19:24) took 7th to lead the Gowanda effort. Also in the Top 10 for Gowanda were Jayson Twoguns (8th) and Chase Bolen (10th). For the girls, Fredonia was in first place with 17 with Falconer/Cassadaga Valley behind them with 42. Both Gowanda and Frewsburg had incomplete teams. Gowanda’s Autumn Pupo finished in 2nd and Kailyn Farner took 8th. On Oct.21, the cross country teams were at Evangola State Park for the Sunset Stampede. The Gowanda boys finished 2nd (45) in Division 2 behind Southwestern (35). Among 10 schools, Silver Creek came in 6th. Figuring in the Gowanda scoring were Chase Bolen (10th, 6:09.5), Drew Shull (12th, 6:24.7), Jayson Twoguns (13th, 6:16.8), Dustin Mohawk (14th, 6:17.4) and Mason Wilson (16th, 6:21.7). Top finisher for Silver Creek was Aidan
Jamison (23rd, 6:33.0). On the girls’ side in Division 2, Allegany-Limestone was first with 26 while Gowanda was 5th with 127. Top Gowanda girls were Autumn Pupo (7th, 7:09.8) and Calie Hudson (18th, 7:36.7). While Silver Creek had an incomplete team, their top girls were Emily Bowers (8th, 7:10.2) and Amber Lockwood (17th, 7:36.2). — The Pine Valley/Gowanda soccer teams both had preliminary Section 6 games. On Oct. 20, the No. 8 Pine Valley/Gowanda boys took an 8-1 loss at No. 1 Holland/Franklinville/WestValley. Early in the first half, Darwin Westlund scored to tie the game at one at that point. An assist was credited to Matthew Hostetter. The No. 9 girls’ team was at No. 8 Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Oct. 19, taking a 3-0 loss.
