Gowanda Sports Report BY BILL PEGLOWSKI
GOWANDA, N.Y. - The Gowanda/Pine Valley Varsity football team hosted Clymer-Sherman-Panama on Sept. 16 at Pine Valley. A Gowanda/Pine Valley fumble on the opening kickoff led to an early 7-0 CSP lead and would stand through a hard-fought first half. In the second half, CSP returned the opening kickoff back 86 yards for a touchdown. They increased their lead to 21-0 by the end of the 3rd quarter. The score was 31-0 when Gowanda/ Pine Valley finally scored with just seconds left in the game. A failed conversion brought things to a 31-6 final. The one bright spot for Gowanda/Pine Valley was Harlee Conklin, who rushed 22 times and gained 145 yards. Conklin also threw four passes, completing one for 30 yards. — The first of three games for the Gowanda Varsity volleyball team was held Sept. 12 with a visit to Pine Valley. Gowanda cruised to an easy 3-0 win with set scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 2518. Back at Gowanda on Sept. 14, the girls hosted Randolph. After losing the first two sets 25-14 and 25-15, the team pulled things together for the critical third set. The game was tied at each step through 4-4 before Gowanda pushed out to a 6-4 advantage. Randolph came back to tie things at 8. The back and forth continued to a score of 15-15. Randolph was up 21-17 when Gowanda rallied back to knot the score 22 through 24. From that 24 all, Gowanda nailed down the final two points for a 26-24 win. With Randolph holding a 2-1 edge in the match, game four saw continued tight play in the early going. Randolph had a 1514 lead when they were finally able to start pulling away. They outscored Gowanda 10-5 down the stretch for a 25-19 win in the game and a 3-1 match win. The girls were back at it Sept.1 5, hosting Salamanca. Gowanda blew by Salamanca 25-4 in the first game. That allowed Gowan-
da to get players who don’t usually get as much playing time into game two. Things were still competitive and Gowanda easily took the game by a score of 25-19. Up 2-0 in the match, Gowanda took an early 4-0 lead and quickly built that up to 15-3. From that point, they coasted to a 25-6 win to take a 3-0 match win. Jada Geiger led the Gowanda attack with 12 kills and a block in the game. Aubrie Heron had three kills and an ace. Also prominent for Gowanda were Jillian Gernatt (2 kills, 11 assists, 5 aces), Ella Luther (2 kills, 1 assist, 4 digs, 9 aces) and Gao:Wisa:S Stevens (2 kills, 1 assist, 4 digs, 2 aces). — The Gowanda Varsity boys and girls cross country teams opened their season at home at Collins Conservation Club, hosting Dunkirk, Jamestown and Olean. The Gowanda course is unique and one of the most natural layouts primarily run on trails through the woods. In the boys race, Jamestown won with a score of 28 with Gowanda in 2nd with 40 followed by Olean (66) and Dunkirk (105). Individual feats for the Gowanda boys were Drew Shull (3rd, 17:55.0), Chase Bolen (5th, 18:09.15), Jayson Twoguns (7th, 18:14.12), Dustin Mohawk (11th, 18:27.58) and Hodaweo:Je’ Wisnlewski (14th, 18:55.40). The Gowanda girls also finished in second with 32, only two points behind Jamestown at 30. Gowanda’s Autumn Pupo (21:51.92) and Calie Hudson (22:08.28) finished first and second, respectively, to spark the Gowanda effort. Also scoring for Gowanda were Kailyn Farner (6th, 24:16.07), Helena Wallschlaeger (10th, 27:47.92) and Alaina Kaczmarczyk (13th, 30:01.09). As it was the only home meet for Gowanda, Senior Night came at the beginning of the season rather than at the end. After the race, the seniors on the boys and girls teams were recognized and a potluck supper was served in their honor to the team and the parents in attendance.
The Gowanda and Silver Creek cross country teams were at the Red Dragon Invitational on Sept. 17. The Gowanda boys finished 6th of 14 teams, and placing in the top 30 in a field of 119 were Chase Bolen (25th, 19:09.13), Jayson Twoguns (28th, 19:23.34) and Drew Shull (29th, 19:23.49). Silver Creek’s top boy was Logan Perryman (51st, 20:10.56). The Gowanda girls team placed 8th with Autumn Pupo (18th, 22:31.61) and Calie Hudson (31st, 23:30.05) leading the effort. The top girl for Silver Creek was Emily Bowers (34th, 23:45.60). — The Pine Valley/Gowanda Varsity boys soccer team was at Randolph Sept. 12. PV-G fell behind 5-0 by halftime on the way to an 8-0 score after three quarters. Early in the final quarter, Noah Frontuto scored to avoid a shutout. An assist was credited to Jarrett Meyers. One final Randolph score brought the final score to 9-1. The team hosted Cassadaga Valley-Falconer on Sept. 14. An early 2-0 CV-F lead was cut to 2-1 by Frontuto midway through the first half with an assist by George Kruszka. CV-F went on to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. They matched that production in the second half for a 6-1 final. — The Pine Valley/Gowanda Varsity girls soccer team hosted Salamanca on Sept. 13. In a tight first half, an initial Salamanca goal was matched by PV-G’s Sarah Kruszka. The teams went into halftime tied at one goal each. Salamanca added two more in the second half for a 3-1 win. The girls hosted Cattaraugus/ Little Valley on Sept. 15. Once again, the score was 1-1 at halftime. C-LV managed just a single goal in the second half, but it was enough for a 2-1 win.
