Gowanda fall sports season kicks off with pep rally Local residents and businesses are invited to join world’s largest event dedicated to Alzheimer’s care, support and research The Alzheimer’s Association, Western New York Chapter, is inviting Chautauqua County residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on October 1 at Point Gratiot Park in Dunkirk.

The Walk will begin at 11 a.m., with check-in beginning at 10 a.m.

On Walk day, participants come together to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s and raise funds that ensure the programs and services provided by the Alzheimer’s Association are free to all who need them. In addition, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony, with the colors of the

Promise Garden flowers representing people’s connection to Alzheimer’s – their personal reasons to end the disease.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

In New York alone, there are more than 410,000 people living with the disease and 580,000 caregivers.

County Announces New Paint Recycling Program New Statewide Program Rolling Out in Chautauqua County Makes it Easy, Safe, and Convenient to Recycle Leftover Paint

MAYVILLE, N.Y., The Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities is pleased to announce a new paint recycling program that allows households and businesses in Chautauqua County to recycle leftover paint, stain, and varnish conveniently and sustainably.

PaintCare, a nonprofit stewardship program created by the paint industry, provides sites in Chautauqua County where households and businesses can recycle unwanted paint all year round. Local drop-off locations can be found by visiting www.paintcare.org/drop-off-sites . All sites accept up to 5 gallons per visit. It is recommended that residents call ahead to confirm business hours and ask if they can accept the type and amount of paint they would like to recycle.

Sites do not accept aerosols (spray paint), leaking, unlabeled, or

empty containers. Businesses, organizations, and households with 100 gallons or more can request a free large volume pickup by visiting https://www.paintcare. org/lvp-request/ or by calling PaintCare at (855) PAINT09.

Chautauqua County joins a new paint recovery effort that is part of a larger statewide program managed by PaintCare, a nonprofit organization created by the paint industry through the American Coatings Association (ACA) to manage leftover paint in states that have enacted paint stewardship laws. PaintCare plans to expand to more than 250 drop-off sites across New York State in the coming months through partnerships with paint retail stores.

New York’s paint recycling program comes in the wake of a paint stewardship law that was passed by the State Legislature in 2019. The law ensures that everyone who produces, sells, and uses paint works together to minimize, reuse, and recycle unwanted paint.

PaintCare has launched successful programs across the country following passage of similar laws in California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Maine, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.

“We’re glad to expand our paint stewardship program into Chautauqua County so that households, businesses, and schools can easily dispose of paint responsibly and sustainably,” said Andrew Radin, PaintCare’s New York State Program Manager. “We’re grateful for the important role that our partners in Chautauqua County play in making sure this initiative is successful. We look forward to adding new sites in the coming months as we roll the program out across the state.”

How It Works PaintCare makes it convenient to recycle leftover paint by establishing drop-off sites at paint and hardware retailers near residential neighborhoods.

These locations are easy to find by visiting PaintCare’s online site locator at www.paintcare.org, or by calling PaintCare’s hotline number at (855) PAINT09.

Most PaintCare sites accept both latex- and oil-based architectural paint products, including paints, stains, sealers, and varnishes.

Paint must be dropped off in its original container with its original manufacturer’s label. A full list of products accepted by the program is available on PaintCare’s website at www.paintcare. org/products.

All sites accept up to five gallons of paint

from each customer, and some sites may accept more. Those planning to drop off paint are encouraged to call ahead to ensure the site can accept the amount and type of paint they want to recycle and confirm hours of operation.

There is no cost to residents and businesses when dropping off their unwanted paint for recycling. A small fee on the sale of new paint—called the PaintCare fee—funds all aspects of the program including paint collection, transportation, processing, and public education. The PaintCare fee in New York varies by container size: $0.00 for half pint or smaller; $0.45 for larger than half pint up to smaller than one gallon; $0.95 for one gallon up to two gallons; $1.95 for larger than two gallons up to five gallons.

Businesses, organizations, and households with 100 gallons of paint or more to recycle may request a free pickup at their location. Some restrictions apply. More information and a request form can be found on PaintCare’s website at https://www.paintcare. org/lvp-request/ .

The new program is expected to manage more than 1.1 million gallons of paint in its first year. In New York, 36.6 million gallons of paint are sold annually, and it is estimated that about 10 percent of household paint goes unused. PaintCare helps ensure the “highest, best use” for paint collected in the program, including giving away good quality material as-is, recycling it, or putting it to another beneficial use. Most of the paint PaintCare receives is latex-based and can be remixed into recycled content paint by processors. To date, PaintCare has processed more than 50 million gallons of paint nationally and saved state and local governments millions of dollars.

Around Town Forestville Fall Festival

The Forestville Fall Festival will be held on October 1st & 2nd at the Forestville High School. There will be a craft show both days,produce & food vendors.

There will be a chili cook-off on Saturday. Enter your chili before 12 noon in a minimum 5 quart crockpot.

The Catholic Church will have a pork dinner from 12 – 6 on Saturday and there will be a Meat Party at the American Legion at 7pm. The Forestville Fire Department will have a chicken barbecue on Sunday from 12 pm – until sold out. There will be a parade on Sunday @ 1 pm – line up at 12:30 at Legion Hall. Decorate your bike contest for parade and dress up your pet contest.

Anderson Lee Library Book Sale

The Friends of the Anderson-Lee Library in Silver Creek is announcing that the annual Used Book Sale will be held in September again this year. There are books for everyone.

The three-day sale will begin on Thursday, Sept.

15th from 10 AM - 8 PM. It will continue Friday, Sept.

16th from 12 PM - 5 PM, and on Saturday, Sept. 17th from 10 AM - 2 PM with the BAG SALE starting at noon.

All proceeds from this sale are used to enhance library collections, equipment, and programs.

The Friends of Anderson-Lee Library is comprised of community members who support the local library. Membership is ongoing and more information about becoming a Friend can be obtained by calling 934-3468 or by stopping at the library on Main Street in Silver Creek.

Back-to-school safety guidelines

As children head back to school, they and their parents have lots to do to be ready for the first days of school. Clothing and supplies may be top priorities, but families also should focus on safety as the first day of school draws close.

The following are some key tips families can keep in mind to ensure a healthy and happy upcoming school year.

School bus safety The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that school buses are the safest way for children to travel to and from school. The majority of school bus-related injuries occur while students are boarding and getting off the bus. Over the last 10 years, the NHTSA says nearly two-thirds of school-age pedestrians who were fatally injured by school buses or other vehicles were hurt after being struck while entering or exiting the bus.

While at the bus stop, children must remember to stay at least five large steps away from the road and wait to board until the driver says so. When leaving the bus, students should make sure there is no oncoming traffic and wait for a signal from the bus driver before crossing busy streets.

While on the bus, observe the rules and stay seated at all times.

Keep the center aisle clear of backpacks.

Walking/biking safety Students may walk or bike to school if the school permits.

School tends to begin during the morning rush hour, so students must exercise extreme caution when walking or biking to school. Stick to sidewalks whenever possible when walking. Cyclists should follow the rules of the road, including riding in the same direction as traffic. Choose the safest route as a family and practice it before the first day of school, advises the security company ADT.

Backpack safety Choose an ergonomically designed backpack to enhance safety and comfort. Backpacks should weigh no more than 5 to 10 percent of the child’s body weight, advises the National Safety Council. Rolling backpacks should be avoided since they are a tripping hazard.

With a new school year on the horizon, students and their parents can discuss school safety so the year starts off on the right foot.

Tri County Crisis Pregnancy Center receives donations The Tri County Crisis pregnancy center recently received donations from Gowanda Harley Davidson’s Babs Memorial run, that was organized by Helene McGarvey, Paula Rosen of Gowanda Harley Davidson, Laura Koch of Johnson’s Plumbing and Heating Inc. and Allie Reid, Executive director of the pregnancy center.

In June, the center held their “Walk for Life” hosted by the Gowanda Assembly of God church and supported by all our area

Why kids should start playing sports

Children can benefit in various ways by participating in sports. These benefits, both physical and mental, can help kids in all aspects of life, and even lay the groundwork for a successful transition into adulthood.

The fitness organization PhitAmerica says that playing sports goes beyond just being physically active. Important lessons are learned on the court, field and pitch.

Kids who participate in sports can learn about discipline, how to handle winning and losing with grace, and the importance of setting and achieving goals.

University of Missouri Health Care encourages all children to participate in sports. These activities are good for the mind and spirit. They help teach children accountability, dedication, leadership, and many other skills.

These are all traits that can be used throughout life, helping people cope with the demands of life that seemingly have little do with sports.

Sports also can help students in the classroom.

Sports requires learning and remembering the rules of the game. These are skills that are relevant to class work or even on the job when children become adults in the workforce.

Of course, a discussion of the benefits of sports play would not be complete without addressing the enormous physical benefits of participating in sports. According to the Journal of the Public Library of Science, the health benefits of playing sports include an increase in lean body mass, an increase in basal metabolic rate and an increase in bone density, which promotes healthy body com-

position. Physical activity by way of sports participation may help the body strengthen over time, increase endurance, help control cholesterol levels, improve blood circulation, and even lower stress levels.

Scholastic sports also are a great catalyst for making friends and encouraging positive behavior. Sports give kids an outlet for energy and a gathering place after school. Children can find like-minded individuals who have the same interests, which may help solidify years-long relationships.

Parents, educators and coaches can encourage children to become involved with sports. The benefits of doing so are numerous and can lay the foundation for them to be successful in life.

Community giving starts at school

When people want to give back, many look to support national charities and other causes that they hold near and dear. Certainly these are worthwhile causes. However, giving back on a local level is a great way to help the people you see every day.

Schools are the heart of many communities. School buildings may serve as gathering spaces for sports practices or meetings for various organizations.

Even though schools are likely to receive municipal funding for certain operations, budgets are frequently being cut and schools may need all the help they can get. This year the boundaries of the budget may be pushed even further as schools revamp their spaces and implement certain safety protocols to confront the pandemic. Now more than ever schools may need help. Here’s how to do just that.

• Volunteer your time.

Find out ways you can volunteer time at school. This may be helping teachers make copies of assignments, supervising children at recess or lunch hours, serving as a chaperone at school functions, or being a coach or mentor for afterschool activities.

• Attend and participate in fundraisers. Fundraisers are essential to help offset costs for many special events and services for students. Whenever possible, give wisely through fundraisers.

• Provide supplies for classrooms. Teachers often have to supplement their classrooms with supplies bought out of pocket. Reach out to teachers to see which items they need and do your best to supply them.

• Join the PTA or a similar school-sanctioned organization. Many groups perform functions that facilitate strong connections

between home and school.

Joining and working with such organizations can improve the school experience for everyone.

• Buy “Box Tops”-affiliated products. The Box Tops for Education program donates $0.10 per box top label collected and submitted by schools back to that school. More than 80,000 elementary schools have earned money through the program to buy equipment and supplies. Box Tops can be found on many different food packages.

• Treat the teacher. In addition to supporting Teacher Appreciation Days and other school events, send in an uplifting note, snack or another way of showing you appreciate his or her efforts.

Schools play integral roles in many communities, and efforts to give back can begin on campus or through school-sponsored programs.
