Upcoming events at Gowanda’s Hollywood Theater BY BILL PEGLOWSKI

GOWANDA — The Hollywood Theater is looking forward to hosting several performances and events this summer and fall as funds continue to be raised for the last act of its restoration efforts. All of the work from the marquee out front to the Grand Drape at the front of the stage has been completed Still awaiting work are the restoration of the theater’s organ as well as a number of tasks related to the on-stage performance area. The next offering at the Hollywood will be Brainstormers, performing at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 27. The show is billed as a free, fun day custom-made for older adults and consists of three skits put on by actors from the Buffalo area. The afternoon will include entertainment, information of interest to boomers and some delicious home treats. A Grand Ole Opry at the Hollywood show originally scheduled for July 23 has been pushed back to Oct. 21. The first week in August will be the annual Hollywood Theater Summer Drama Camp. Under the direction of Cindy Ripley, Gowanda student performers will learn an assortment of musical numbers with choreography from Broadway Jr. shows. Ripley, a former Gowanda teacher, is now a nationally recognized educational theater consultant and promoter of the Broadway Jr. project adapt-

ing Broadway musicals for younger performers. At the end of theater camp week, at 2 p.m. Aug. 5, the students will show off what they have learned in a free live performance at the theater. The music camp is funded with a grant from the Statewide Regrant Program of the state Council on the Arts. On Aug. 13, Gowanda’s Gabrielle McCormack will be presenting a vocal recital at 7 p.m. The show promises to be a night of French Melodie, a.k.a. art song, German Lieder, a.k.a. poetry set to music, and musical theater.

In September, the theater hosts the first of a series of larger concert events. Wail On, a tribute to Waylon Jennings and The Outlaws of Country, arrives at the theater on Sept. 17. Tickets for that show go on sale on Aug. 1. On Oct. 1, the theater will stage a Tom Petty tribute band. World-renowned theater organist Dennis James returns to the Hollywood to begin the second round of the Hollywood Silent Movie Series on Nov. 5. This series presents classic silent movies with organ accompaniment similar to the way they were originally shown.

To enrich the experience, James also gives some historical background information related to the films and/or actors involved in each presentation. The Hollywood Theater is also continuing its private film party rentals. Subject to theater availability, local groups of between 10 and 20 people can rent the theater for a movie screening. In most cases, the group brings in a DVD of their own to have shown using the facilities at the theater. For more information, visit gowandahollywoodtheater.com.

Springville Fiddlers Green Country & Bluegrass Festival 2022 is happening on July 30! Enjoy free, continuous, live music all day beginning at 11:00 AM at three venues: Fiddler’s Green Park, Heritage Park, and Concord Mercantile General Store; all within convenient walking distance along Franklin Street in Springville, New York. Besides twelve country western, bluegrass, and folk music groups, the festival features clogging demonstrations at the Goddard Town Hall, historic demonstrations, an expanded car cruise-in, food vendors, and more. While attending the festival, be sure to check out the Concord Historical Society’s museum campus and unique stores and restaurants along Springville’s Main Street. Springville has a long heritage in country music. Early settlers called our hamlet Fiddlers Green because of the entertainment on our Village Commons. In 1834 the Village was incorporated as Springville, but Fiddlers Green lives on and so does the music and entertainment. For more information visit springvillefiddlefest.com
