BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The No. 2 Gowanda Varsity baseball team hosted No. 7 Frewsburg in the Class C quarterfinals on May 24. The game was a pitcher’s duel through the top of the 4th inning with no runs scored to that point. Gowanda got going in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs.

While shutting out Frewsburg for the rest of the game, Gowanda added two runs in the 5th and three more in the 6th inning for an 8-0 final.

John Ondus was on the mound for Gowanda through the 5th inning with 13 strikeouts and giving up just one hit.

The team was back at home on May 26 hosting No. 3 Maple

Grove. The game was scoreless through two innings before Gowanda went up 2-0 in the 3rd. The second of those runs was by Tyler Smith who had gotten to third base on a passed ball and scored from there on a balk. Maple Grove finally got on the board in the 4th inning with a solo home run hit over the fence directly at the scoreboard. Three walks on one strikeout in the bottom of the inning loaded the based and set Gowanda up to score a run on a passed ball. A fourth walk loaded the bases again. The next Gowanda batter, Gavin Phillips, was grazed in the helmet by a pitch moving him onto 1st base and scoring another

Gowanda run. Gowanda went on to score twice more that inning, taking the tally to 6-1.

After a scoreless 5th inning, Maple grove added a pair of runs with a two-run homerun. Gowanda answered with their own pair of runs for an 8-3 final.

— The No. 3 Gowanda Varsity softball team traveled to No. 2 Portville for a semi-final game on May 25. Gowanda jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the 1st inning. They were able to stretch that to 5-1 in the 3rd inning after a scoreless 2nd.

Gowanda would not score again for the rest of the game, but were able to hold on for the win playing solid defense.

With the score still 5-1 going to the 6th inning, Portville only managed single runs in each of the final two innings.

Gowanda advanced to the Class C finals with a 5-3 victory taking their overall record to 17-4. Addison Kota pitched the entire game, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Kota also had two hits in the game including a two-run home run, her 2nd home run of the season. It also moved the team’s total home run count for the season to six. Salamanca surged into 16-3 lead by halftime and was never seriously threatened. Despite outscoring Salamanca in the final half, it was too little too late to avoid an 18-12 loss. DEC Reminds Visitors to Focus on Safety as Summer Hiking Season Begins Being Prepared Before Heading Out Is the Best Way to Ensure Arriving Home Safely

New York State Department of E nv i r on me nt a l Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today reminded visitors to New York's outdoor spaces to focus on safety before they head out to their outdoor adventures in the state's wild and beautiful destinations.

Ahead of this summer's recreational season, DEC continues to advance actions to promote public safety and improve visitor experience.

"Recreating safely and responsibly starts with planning ahead before visiting the Adirondacks, Catskills, and any of New York's wild places," Commissioner Seggos said.

"Preparing for potential dangers and changing weather conditions and knowing your limits before hiking into the back country can mean the difference between life and death.

To protect yourself and others, I'm encouraging outdoor adventurers to plan ahead and make smart decisions to prevent accidents before they occur."

Visitation to State Forest Preserve lands is typically highest during the summer months.

In partnership with State agencies, local municipalities, and private entities, DEC is working to protect public safety, improve the visitor experience during the busy season, and safeguard sensitive ecosystems.

Using recommendations outlined by the High Peaks Strategic Planning Advisory Group (HPAG) and Catskills Strategic Planning Advisory Group (CAG), as well as input from local and community partners and outdoors enthusiasts, New York State continues to implement new strategies and adaptively manage the ongoing safety and resource needs of both Forest Preserve regions.

How to keep outdoor living areas safe Outdoor living spaces are a wildly popular trend. A 2021 survey conducted on behalf of the International Casual Furnishings Association and American Home Furnishings Alliance found that 90 percent of individuals surveyed felt outdoor living spaces are more valuable than ever. That popularity was evident during the pandemic, during which 23 percent of respondents indicated they bought new furniture while 18 percent acknowledged building a deck.

The excitement of seeing a new or renovated outdoor living area can make it easy to overlook safety. But outdoor living areas, particularly those that include entertaining areas with televisions, lighting and other electronics, can pose significant safety hazards if homeowners don’t take some necessary precautions.

• Use an appropriate extension cord. String lights above outdoor living spaces like decks and patios can create a warm, relaxing nighttime vibe. Those lights need to be plugged in, which increases the risk for electrical accidents. When utilizing an extension cord outdoors, never use a cord designated for indoor use. Outdoor extension cords are better insulated than cords made for indoor use. That insulation provides better protection against the elements, including sunlight, changes in temperature and moisture. When using an extension cord outdoors, make sure the cord is secured and not left lying on a deck or patio where it can easily become a tripping hazard.

• Consider fencing. Fencing can make an outdoor living space more private and safe.

Local laws may mandate that pools be enclosed with fencing, but even living spaces without pools can be made safer with the installation of a fence. Firepits are wildly popular, as more than 35 percent of homeowners who responded to the ICFA survey acknowledged their intention to purchase new firepits in 2021. Adding fencing around areas with firepits establishes boundaries, which is a must for homeowners with small children.

Fencing also makes it harder for local wildlife to gain access to a property, which can decrease residents’ risk for tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.

• Purchase an outdoor television. Outdoor televisions can be expensive, but the cost of such devices will depend on what homeowners are looking for. Homeowners who plan to spend ample time outdoors watching games, movies and their favorite shows may feel a high-end outdoor television, which can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000, is well worth the investment. But those working with smaller budgets can find a quality 4K outdoor TV for around $2,000. That’s still a steep price tag, but the electronics experts at P.C. Richard & Son note that outdoor TVs are designed with safety features that indoor televisions don’t have. For example, outdoor TVs can self-regulate temperature and moisture levels, greatly reducing the risk of electrical issues.

The first 12 minutes and 18 seconds of the second half were all Gowanda as they boosted their advantage to 13-4. Things tightened up from that point with the score creeping to 14-6 with 2:22 left in the game. Salamanca scored a last gasp goal with 15 seconds left only to have that countered by Aurora Stevens just seven seconds later for a 15-7 final. Leading Gowanda was Aailyah Sevens with six goals and one assist.

Also scoring for Gowanda were Chloe Luther (4 goals; 2 assists), Aurora Stevens (3 goals; 1 assist) and Ke’Ya Stevens (1 goal). Jillian Gernatt was credited with an assist for Gowanda. Coming up big for Gowanda in goal was Layla Gamble with 13 saves.

Gowanda junior Ke’ya Stevens and sophomore Chloe Luther were both selected to play on the 2022 WNY/ROCHESTER team that competed over the weekend in Baltimore, Md., alongside the Division I Women’s College Lacrosse Final Four.

The Section 6 Class D Track Championships were held May 26 at Randolph. Several members of the Gowanda track teams qualified for the event and were in attendance.

To qualify, an athlete needed to be ranked in the top 16 of Class D in their event.

Representing the Gowanda girls were Alexia Harvey (100M), Alex Liszkiewicz (400M, 1:06.01 [6th]; 200M [9th]), Sydney Smith (Triple Jump), Crissa Scanlan (Shot Put [6th]; Discus Throw [3rd]) plus Avery Wilson, Alexia Harvey, Alyssa Ruzycki and Lexie Fort (4x100M Relay).

Qualifying for the boys were Noah Vogtli (100M [5th]; Long Jump), Ethan Bachek (400M), Chase Bolen (800M; 1600M), Dylen Harbison (110M Hurdles, 18.01 [5th]; Mason Wilson (400M Hurdles).

Two boys and two girls from Gowanda earned a spot in the state qualifier at West Seneca set for June 3 and 4 by achieving a provisional time/distance in their specific event. The boys are Noah Vogtli (Long Jump) and Dylen Harbison (110M Hurdles).

THE CHAUTAUQUA ADDICTION SERVICES LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM CONCLUDES ITS THIRD SUCCESSFUL SEMESTER Mayville, NY – Employers in nearly every field and industry are facing workforce shortages and recruitment challenges.

Healthcare, including mental healthcare and addiction services, is no exception.

New initiatives for the prevention of, treatment for, and recovery from addiction can be constrained by the difficulty of recruiting trained staff.

Chautauqua County government, through the grant-funded Combat Add ic t ionCHQ. com initiative, is working “upstream” to prepare a workforce for the needs of our community agencies and the residents they serve. The Chautauqua Addiction Services Leadership Development Program offers promising students from the addictions counseling program at Jamestown Community College and the social work program at the State University of New York (SUNY) Fredonia a semester of additional professional development plus opportunities to interact with leaders of local agencies.

The program’s goals include increasing the likelihood that this future addiction services workforce will choose careers right here in our own county. The program has now had 20 student participants over three semesters, and already this future workforce is becoming the present workforce as local agencies have begun to hire some of these talented individuals.

extremely helpful for me and I am so appreciative for the opportunity. Getting to know local agency leaders was so helpful in discovering available resources. I appreciated getting real world perspective to supplement my education . . .”

Jacqueline Snyder of Gowanda was named to the Spring 2022 President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College TROY, NY - Jacqueline Snyder, of Gowanda, was named to the Spring 2022 President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College.

Snyder is studying in the Individual Studies program at the Troy, NY college.

Each fall and spring term, the college’s President’s List names those full-time students and part-time students registered for at least six college credits who have a term average of between 3.5 and 4.0 and who received no grade of “D,” “F,” “I,” “Z,” or “W” on their record for that term. Students must

have successfully completed at least 12 college credits.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley offers more than 80 degree and certificate programs in three schools: Business and Liberal Arts; Health Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it enrolls nearly 10,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning and workforce training. Kiwanis Club Charity Golf Tournament is June 24th On Friday, June 24th, the Silver Creek Kiwanis Club will be holding its 27th Annual Charity Golf Tournament. It will be held at Tri-County Country Club. The day includes golf, tee gift, continental breakfast, lunch, chicken dinner, and prizes. Check-in is from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Golf begins at 8:45 a.m. The format is a four-person scramble.

The Kiwanis Club supports the children in the communities of Silver Creek, Forestville, Sheridan, Irving, and the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation.

Their work is funded solely through fundraisers and con-

tributions. It is the goal of this club to continue to have a meaningful impact on our community’s children.

The American Heart Association says research suggests the standard American diet is energy-rich (calorically heavy) but nutrient poor. And according to Canada-based registered dietician Nicole Osinga, though Canadians are making smarter food choices, room for improvement remains, especially in regard to limiting consumption of red meat.

Nutrient-rich foods are those that are high in minerals, vitamins and other nutrients that are vital for health without too much added sugars, sodium and saturated fat.

Campfire Corn on the Cob Serves 4 4 corn on the cob (do not husk) Water 1⁄2 to 1 cup sugar (optional) Butter to taste Salt to taste (optional)

Mix the water and sugar in a clean bucket, cooler or large pan (add enough water to cover corn). Add the corn to the water mixture and soak for 1 to 2 hours.

Remove the corn from the water and place over the campfire or on the grill, turning often to avoid over-burning the husk.

Cook for approximately 20 to 30 minutes or until tender; remove corn from the fire. Peel back the husk and silk, spread with butter and/or salt. Enjoy steaming hot.
