BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The No. 2 Gowanda Varsity baseball team hosted No. 7 Frewsburg in the Class C quarterfinals on May 24. The game was a pitcher’s duel through the top of the 4th inning with no runs scored to that point. Gowanda got going in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs. While shutting out Frewsburg for the rest of the game, Gowanda added two runs in the 5th and three more in the 6th inning for an 8-0 final. John Ondus was on the mound for Gowanda through the 5th inning with 13 strikeouts and giving up just one hit. The team was back at home on May 26 hosting No. 3 Maple
Grove. The game was scoreless through two innings before Gowanda went up 2-0 in the 3rd. The second of those runs was by Tyler Smith who had gotten to third base on a passed ball and scored from there on a balk. Maple Grove finally got on the board in the 4th inning with a solo home run hit over the fence directly at the scoreboard. Three walks on one strikeout in the bottom of the inning loaded the based and set Gowanda up to score a run on a passed ball. A fourth walk loaded the bases again. The next Gowanda batter, Gavin Phillips, was grazed in the helmet by a pitch moving him onto 1st base and scoring another
Gowanda run. Gowanda went on to score twice more that inning, taking the tally to 6-1. After a scoreless 5th inning, Maple grove added a pair of runs with a two-run homerun. Gowanda answered with their own pair of runs for an 8-3 final. — The No. 3 Gowanda Varsity softball team traveled to No. 2 Portville for a semi-final game on May 25. Gowanda jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the 1st inning. They were able to stretch that to 5-1 in the 3rd inning after a scoreless 2nd. Gowanda would not score again for the rest of the game, but were able to hold on for the win playing solid defense.

With the score still 5-1 going to the 6th inning, Portville only managed single runs in each of the final two innings. Gowanda advanced to the Class C finals with a 5-3 victory taking their overall record to 17-4. Addison Kota pitched the entire game, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Kota also had two hits in the game including a two-run home run, her 2nd home run of the season. It also moved the team’s total home run count for the season to six. Credited with an assist vens. was Nakotah Jackson. — The No. 7 Gowanda Varsity boys lacrosse team was at No. 2 Salamanca/Randolph for a Class D quarterfinal game on May 24. Salamanca surged into 16-3 lead by halftime and was never seriously threatened. Despite outscoring Salamanca in the final half, it was too little too late to avoid an 18-12 loss. Croix Snow and Trelin Warrior each scored four goals and had one assist for Gowanda. Adding a pair of Gowanda goals was Winter Rivera. Ha’Tsihgahdo:D Stevens and Quinton Jackson each had a single
