Gowanda Sports Report BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity baseball team got its week underway May 5 at Allegany-Limestone. Gowanda pitcher Blake Herman gave up a single hit with six strikeouts through five innings on the mound. The game was tied 1-1 into the 6th inning when Gowanda picked up three runs to take a 4-1 victory. In addition to his pitching stats, Herman hit two doubles and scored twice. May 7 found the baseball team back home hosting Dunkirk. In a dominating performance, Gowanda rolled over Dunkirk 9-0, improving the team’s league record to 7-2. The Gowanda Varsity softball team started their week at Silver Creek on May 2. In a largely defensive battle, the game went scoreless through three innings. In the 4th inning, Gowanda pulled into a temporary 1-0 lead. After Gowanda scored another run in the 6th inning, Silver Creek knotted the score at 2. The 7th inning went scoreless forcing extra innings. An 8th inning rally saw Gowanda pile on five runs before shutting down Silver Creek for 7-2 final. Gowanda’s Addison Kota pitched a complete game with six strikeouts while giving up one walk and five hits. Gowanda claimed 12 stolen bases in the game with eight of those split between Jada Geiger and Kailyn Farner. Pitching for Silver Creek, Kaylee Hutchison struck out 11 Gowanda batters keeping things close until the final inning. On two outs, hits by Laneya Olsen and Tessa Braidich for Silver Creek kept them in the game and spoiled a Gowanda shutout. The softball team was at
Pine Valley on May 4 for a game that ended in a 12-0 Gowanda win. Again it was Kota on the mound for Gowanda. This time she threw a six strikeout, two-hit shutout. Leading the Gowanda offense were Cameron Nagel (2 singles, 1 double, 2 RBIs, 1 run) and Gao:wisa:s Stevens (2 singles, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored). May 5 saw a non-league softball game at North Collins with Gowanda taking an 8-4 win. Lily Bobseine pitched for Gowanda. The highlight of the game was an over-the-fence two-run homer by Hailey Fort, three weeks in a row she has hit an out of the park homerun. On May 6, Gowanda won by a score of 13-1 at Forestville. Cameron Nagel pitched for Gowanda allowing one walk and striking out 11 in a no hitter. On offense, Nagel had a double, a triple, 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Also prominent in the scoring were Addison Kota (3 runs) and Gao:wisa:s Stevens (2 runs). The team closed out the week hosting Lake Shore for a pair of 5-inning games on May 7. After going up 3-0 in the 1st inning, Gowanda ran up nine runs in a 2nd inning that saw five players bat twice. Jada Geiger led off the inning for Gowanda with a walk. She scored twice and also hit a 3-RBI double in the inning. Down 12-0, Lake Shore finally put a run on the board in the 3rd inning and three more in the 5th leaving Gowanda with a 14-4 win. Game two was much closer with Lake Shore opening with a 4-run 1st inning. Gowanda would eventually tie things at 4 in the 3rd inning. Lake Shore reclaimed the lead 6-5 in the 4th inning only to have

Gowanda pull back into a tie in the 5th forcing an extra inning. Lake Shore was shut out in the 6th inning. Then an Addison Kota walk and Holland Browning single set the stage for Ella Luther who
slammed the ball deep into left field to end the game. While Gowanda only needed one run to win, both Kota and Browning crossed home plate on the play. The game officially goes down as a 7-6 walk
2.4 minutes of the game were played in the Gowanda end of the field, Gowanda’s Croix Snow raced the ball through the Newfane defense to score on Gowanda’s first shot on goal. Gowanda would take the score to 3-0 by the end of the period. In the second quarter, Newfane managed to tighten things up to 6-4 with Gowanda still in the lead. Gowanda came out big in the third quarter boosting their advantage to 12-5 with five different players scoring at least once in the quarter. Gowanda took advantage of the lead to get a lot of backup players into the game in the final quarter. Even so, they managed to keep Newfane off the scoreboard until there was just 24 seconds left. The final tally was 16-6 with Gowanda taking the win. Leading the Gowanda attack were Trelin Warrior (4 goals, 1 assist), Jessup Stevens (3 goals, 1 assist) and Ha’tsihgahdo Stevens (2 goals, 2 assists). Adding single goals were Snow, Nakotah Jackson, Logan Lukonaitis, Roy Issac and Ethan Steeprock.
The Gowanda Varsity girls lacrosse team hosted Orchard Park on May 3 for a non-league game. Outscored 6-1 in the first half and 5-2 in the second, Gowanda fell 11-3. Chloe Luther had 2 goals and 1 assist, and Aailyah Stevens had 1 goal for Gowanda. A May 7 game at Eden/ North Collins was more competitive, but Gowanda was behind 9-4 by halftime. Gowanda’s Varsity Track teams hosted both the Cattaraugus-Little Valley and West Valley teams on May 3. The Gowanda boys outpaced Cattaraugus-Little Valley 77-22 while falling short 64-58 to non-league West Valley. Gowanda boys with double wins in the meet were Noah Vogtli (100M - 1st, Long Jump - 1st, Triple Jump - 2nd), Dylen Harbison (110m Hurdles - 1st, High Jump 1st, Long Jump - 4th, Shot Put - 4th) and Ethan Bachek (400M - 1st, 200M - 1st). The Gowanda 4x100M Relay team (Sam Latimore, Mason Ruff, Ethan Bachek and Noah Vogtli) and 4x400M Relay team (Latimore, Ruff, Bachek and Chase Bolen) both also recorded top finishes. Also turning in strong individual performances for the Gowanda boys were Chase Bolen (1600M - 2nd, 800M - 3rd), Mason Wilson (400m Hurdles - 2nd, 110M Hurdles - 3rd) and Sam Larimore (Discus 2nd, Shot Put - 3rd). The Gowanda girls track team beat both Cattaraugus-Little Valley and West Valley by scores of 62-33 and 58-34, respectively. Crissa Scanlan came up big for Gowanda winning both the Shot Put (28-1.5) and Discus Throw (78-7) events. Also with a first in the meet was Alex Mickiewicz (800M 1st, 400M - 2nd, 200M - 5th).
