Gowanda Sports Report BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity softball team hosted Springville on April 12. In the first inning, Gowanda pitcher Cianna Hidalgo retired the Springville batters without a hit and giving up a single walk. Gowanda’s leadoff batter Gao:wisa:s Stevens was grazed by a pitch placing her on first base. She gradually made her way to third. Batting third, Addison Kota brought Stevens home with a double to left field. Next up, Ella Luther singled allowing Kota to score. After a Hailey Fort double to deep center, Springville finally registered a strikeout. Luther, then, scored from third on a passed ball before a Kailyn Farner RBI single scored Fort. That left the score at 4-0 after one inning. Strong pitching continued for Gowanda in the second inning, handing strikeouts to the next two Springville batters. A third out followed with a hit direct to first base for an easy tag. Gowanda went back to work on offense. Hidalgo started things off with a single to left field. Emylia McHale followed with a single as a fielding error at first base landed her on second and brought Hidalgo home. Then, for the second time in the game, Stevens was hit by a pitch, this time less of a graze than the first. McHale was thrown out trying to get to third on a Holland Browning single. Following a second Gowanda out, an error in center field gave Luther another single. With two runners on base, Fort was back up to bat. She drove a shot into the deep corner of left field for a 2RBI triple. A final strikeout ended the inning with the score 8-0 with Gowanda in control.

All of that led to a scoreless third inning. Springville batters were again retired in order. Four Gowanda hitters came up with a lone single. After the short third inning and after another three Springville batters were retired in order, their defense fell apart in the bottom half of the inning. After the first Gowanda batter struck out, Holland Browning followed with a single. Addison Kota followed with a low shot to the left side of center field for

a hit just inside of the thirdbase line. At that point, Springville managed to get a second out on Gowanda. The next three Gowanda batters singled bringing in two more runs. A final pair of runs scored with a Gao:wisa:s Stevens triple into right field. As the inning closed, it was now 16-0. In the fifth inning, the first Springville hit a pop up right to the pitcher. A second batter was walked but would be thrown out trying to steal

a triple, three RBIs and two runs including a home run. Ella Luther had three singles, three runs and two RBIs. Adding two doubles, two runs and two RBIs was Addison Kota. Gowanda pitcher Cianna Hidalgo batted for three singles and scored two runs. Facing 17 Springville batters, she registered six strikeouts and gave up just two walks. After the Varsity game, there was a JV scrimmage game. Due to a shortage of Gowanda players, Varsity players Ella Luther and Addison Kota joined the JVs. There were still only enough players to have an 8-on-8 game. Springville pulled into a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Following a second inning that gave Gowanda a 2-1 advantage, the third inning fell scoreless. Each team scored single runs in the fourth inning. The close 3-2 game fell apart for Springville in inning five. Six Gowanda batters were walked in the inning as they piled up nine runs. Springville added a Photo by Bill Peglowski single run to their total in the sixth inning moving the score to 12-3 which would Gowanda’s Addison Kota crosses home plate eventually be the final score. during the April 12 softball game at Springville.
