Kittel Residency Affords Creative Experience For SGI HS Students

SPRINGVILLE – An extended visit by a decorated independent musician, composer, and recording artist gave Springville-Griffith Institute High School music students an opportunity to see their creativity come to life.

A Grammy nominated violinist, fiddler, and composer, Jeremy Kittel, whose recent residency was made possible by the Springville Center for the Arts, spent three weeks working with students in Julie Noeson’s Music Composition class at SGI High School. Students

were tasked by Noeson to listen to music previously released by Kittel and to organize a composition in a similar style.

At the end of January, Kittel then spent time workshopping the students’ compositions in several masterclass sessions to help prepare them to be performed by Kittel and his band, Kittel & Co., when they returned earlier this month. The band performed the students’ pieces in a special performance for music students across the district on March 10.

“It’s been really neat to see how their pieces progress from one tiny little thing into something bigger,” Kittel said. “I grew up in a really cool high school, but I don’t think we had any kind of composition class, so it is really neat that there is a composition class and that they are learning all these different aspects.”

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — After two years of COVID-19 restrictions, the Historic Hollywood Theater is getting back to being an active entertainment venue.

Due to capital project work at Gowanda High School repurposing their auditorium to temporary classroom space, both high school and middle school musicals were performed at the Hollywood.

A final Gowanda High School event will be at the theater at 7 p.m. March 31 when the annual Cabaret Concert takes the stage. This unique musical event presents a selection of high school vocalists and groups in a cabaret setting. In past years, the concert has included some tables and chairs set up on stage for some of the audience giving the concert the intimate club feel.

Coming April 1, the theater presents the third installment of their silent movie series. Beginning at 7 p.m., three comedies will be screened. Organ accompaniment for the movies will be provided by Dennis James, a major player in the global revival of interest in silent films. The screening promises a historical experience with movies from the 1920s presented as originally screened in a theater accurate to the period. To further the experience, James also gives some historical background about the actors and films being screened allowing the audience to fully put themselves back into the mindset of the original audiences.

April 30 brings Jake Swanson back to the theater for a concert of classical music.

Together with Sarah Marchitelli, Swanson founded the Decho Ensemble in

2011. The group performs throughout North America and Europe during the Summer months while Swanson serves as the band director at Gowanda High School during the school year.

The 2 p.m. Gowanda concert will also include additional performers whose names are yet to be announced. Past performances have included musicians from SUNY Fredonia and other regional universities.

Then on May 7 at 3 p.m., a “Chopsicks to Chopin” dueling pianos concert in scheduled.

The theater will be holding their annual “Music & Me” music camp for preschoolers June 27 to July 1.

“We did a little bit of blues, a little bit of bluegrass and hopefully that connects with the composing as well.”

Kaitlyn Kowalski, a senior in Noeson’s class, valued the opportunity to work with a professional on her piece.

“It’s been really cool to see our music personally come to life in the way that they interpret it based on how we first thought about it and our thought process,” she said, noting that she was inspired to compose “adventure-like” music after first hearing Kittel’s work.

“It’s sort of taking some of what (Kittel’s) pieces had in common and trying to work it into mine and see what (the band) could do with it from there,” she added.

Most of all, she’s enjoyed the experiential learning Kittel’s residency provided.

“I like being able to do things differently and not just sit in a classroom and

do things on a computer,” she said. “It’s really cool to see things come to life and how they can be in the real world.”

Kittel, meanwhile, enjoyed working with engaging, talented students like the ones at SGI. “Music is like a little muscle,” he told students at the end of his January visit.

“You practice and get stronger at it. Just like anything you want to do in life. The more you do it and the more you get into it with an open mind and an open heart to it, the more you can learn about it and the more you can understand it and give back along the way.”

ELLICOTTVILLE — With an eye on the future, Holiday Valley Resort is planning the construction of a new six-passenger chairlift for its main slope starting this summer.The new lift, expected to open for fall 2023, will replace the Mardi Gras Express, a four-passenger high-speed lift built in 1996 and runs up through the heart of the resort.“The Holiday Valley lift system has been recognized by our guests as one of the best in the east,” said Dennis Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s President and General Manager. “The Mardi Gras 6-Pack will give skiers and snowboarders an exciting new experience with

quicker access to the top of the mountain.”The new lift will be built in two stages, starting with the foundations of 11 new lift towers in summer 2022, officials said.

The existing Mardi Gras Express will serve skiers and riders during the winter of 2022-23 and then will be dismantled in spring 2023.

by November 2023.Consistent with the other chairlifts at Holiday Valley, the new Mardi Gras 6-Pack lift will be manufactured by Doppelmayr USA, based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The chair will have the capacity to deliver 3,000 people per hour over nearly a mile trek

up 700 vertical feet to the top of Mardi Gras.Once the new Mardi Gras 6-Pack is in operation, Holiday Valley’s total uphill capacity will be 25,650 people per hour.

Holiday Valley most recently updated its old Yodeler lift, built in 2001, with the new $4.1 million Yodeler Express Quad, a state-ofthe-art detachable chairlift constructed over the past year and opened in December.The new chairlift is the same one in use on some other slopes at the resort.

Its detachable feature slows the chair and makes it easier and safer to load at the base and unload at the summit. Fewer stops will mean a smoother and faster ride to the top.

Opera House Mask Requirement Lifted FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center has lifted its masking requirement in response to changes in NYS and CDC guidelines and the County’s declining COVID positivity rate.

Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis notes that “effective immediately, masks are no longer required at Opera House events. We do still encourage patrons to wear masks while in the venue. Masks are available in the lobby and in the box office. Staff and volunteers will continue to be masked.” He adds that the Opera House Board and staff are grateful for everyone’s cooperation during the previous masking requirement.

The Opera House reopened to live audiences this

past July with mask-wearing optional for vaccinated individuals. In August, with the rise of the Delta variant and rapid increase in transmission rate in the County, a masking requirement was implemented and has remained in effect until now.

Cornell Cooperative Extension shares why taking down bird feeders can help stop the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

SOUTHWEST, NEW YORK– Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is a serious, fatal disease of poultry that is at top of mind for many. Since the beginning of the year, it’s been identified in over 350 wild birds in 20 states, including New York. New York has also had 3 cases of HPAI to date in backyard poultry flocks, which resulted in the death of 268 birds. It is up to us as good friends and neighbors to help protect domestic poultry flocks. One of the ways that we can do this is to take down our wild bird feeders for a little while.

While this disease is

mostly carried by wild waterfowl, research has shown that other wild bird populations can carry it too, especially if they share nesting and feeding grounds with wild waterfowl. These populations include perching birds and songbirds. For this reason, we are recommending that folks that feed wild birds should take down their bird feeders until the threat of the disease has passed.

It is uncertain as to when it will be safe to put feeders back out, but scientists believe that case loads should decrease over the summer months. The highest risk of spreading the disease is now, during the spring migration. That said, this is a disease of the colder months, and we may see cases spike again during the fall migration.

For those who have poultry at home, taking down bird feeders is especially important. Additional ways to protect flocks include a.) keeping your flock away from wild birds, especially wild waterfowl b.) keeping people who aren’t responsible for poultry care away from your flock, and c.) if you must visit other poultry or areas that wild birds frequent, change into clean clothing and footwear before entering poultry housing.

This disease can cause unusual deaths and illness in both wild and domestic birds. Concerns about dead or sick wild birds can be directed to your local Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) office.

SMS Science Olympiad Team Takes 3rd Place At WNY Regionals

During the first five days in August, the Hollywood Theater will again present the annual Hollywood Theater Drama Camp. The program brings former Gowanda teacher Cindy Ripley back each Summer. Ripley began the Broadway Junior initiative that adapts Broadway musicals for younger performers. She travels extensively around the country promoting early high school theater, which includes all of the Gowanda Middle School musicals for several years.

August 27 will bring Strictly Hip back to the Hollywood Theater. The Tragically Hip cover band previously performed at the theater Feb. 20, 2020.

NY demands casino payments while Seneca compact under review

BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY IRVING — The Seneca Nation is calling upon New York state to allow the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) the time required to complete its ongoing review of the Nation’s gaming compact, while also rejecting the state’s threat to circumvent that review.

New York state is demanding two casino cash payments totaling $540 million to be made by Wednesday.

If the payment is not made, the letter indicates the state will seek to seize the funds. The letter comes while the NIGC has yet to complete its review of the compact payments and issue an official report on the matter.

The Seneca Nation Council passed a resolution Feb. 12 requiring a review and final determination by the National Indian Gaming Commission on whether additional revenue-sharing payments to New York state are lawful under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. That decision follows a settlement agreement signed by Seneca Nation President Matthew Pagels and Gov. Kathy Hochul on Jan. 12 to end the five-year Class III gaming compact payment dispute.

“The NIGC’s review, and the time needed to complete that review, is not a matter that the Seneca Nation can control,” Pages said Friday.

“We have pressed, and continue to press, the agency for an update. We hope that an official report from NIGC will come soon.

“Rather than threatening aggressive action,” he continued, “the state should permit the federal agency responsible for overseeing Indian gaming issues the time it needs to complete its work.”

The Seneca Nation notified the state in March 2017 that it had made its final payment under the gaming compact negotiated in 2002.

An arbitration panel later sided with the state and directed the Senecas to remit $225 million to New York.

The Senecas challenged the decision in federal court and asked for a review by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

In February 2021, a spokesman for then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the Senecas’ obligation had grown to $435 million, $150 million of which was owed to municipalities in the region. According to an attorney with Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman, LLP, representing New York state, those payments now total nearly $540 million.

The Mothers of the Nation, a group of Seneca women organized under the Seneca Constitution, commended the Council for passing the Feb. 12 resolution.

In the meantime, Pagels is calling on the state to begin discussions on an amended gaming compact with the Seneca Nation, citing continual changes, developments and threats to the gaming market.

Cattaraugus County legislators green light Ashford recycling facility

BY RICK MILLER LITTLE VALLEY — Cattaraugus County lawmakers gave the green light Wednesday to a Springville recycling company’s plan to operate as a solid waste facility in the town of Ashford.County Line Recovery Inc. of 7203 Henrietta Road in Ashford plans to use a former concrete plant to separate and store recyclable materials before transporting it to another authorized facility.A 3-year-old local law requires approval by the county legislature and the governing body of the town of any proposed solid waste facility. The company is relocating from a smaller location it had outgrown.Legislators set a public hearing on adding more than 500 acres in four towns to the county’s unified agriculture district. The towns are Conewango, Randolph, Napoli and Little Valley.

The hearing will be March 23 at 5:01 p.m. in the legislative chambers on the third floor of the County Center in Little Valley.Agriculture districts in New York provide safeguards to farmers aimed at keeping agricultural lands in production.

Opera House to Present Celtic Concert FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center presents Sue Tillotson and Jim Cunningham in concert on Fri., Mar. 18, at 7:30 p.m.

Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis notes that “in accordance with the changes in guidelines from New York State and from the CDC, and because the transmission level in Chautauqua County has declined to a LOW status, masks are no longer required at Fredonia Opera House events.

We do still encourage patrons to wear masks while in the venue; and staff and volunteers will continue to be masked.” He adds that the Opera House Board and staff are grateful for everyone’s cooperation during the previous masking require-

ment.

Sue Tillotson and Jim Cunningham both hail from western NY and have played music together for many years, bringing a love of Celtic music and exciting instrumentation to their audiences.

Tillotson plays fiddle, whistle and vocals with Cunningham on guitar, bouzouki, cittern, Celtic harp and vocals. She is an award-winning Scottish fiddler and, as leader/ founder of the Bonnie Loch Fiddlers, is in demand as a teacher and workshop clinician.

Hailed as the “Celtic standard bearers of Chautauqua County,” the duo has extensive experience performing for many types of events,

including weddings, receptions, at art galleries, wineries and in festivals.

The pair has been a regular feature of the Jamestown Regional Celtic Festival and The Ligonier (PA) Highland Games.

With a repertoire that includes Scottish, Irish, Scandinavian and Breton tunes, as well as songs for Contra Dance, Square Dance, Celtic Christmas and original pieces, Tillotson and Cunningham have two full CDs available on CD Baby, Spotify, and iTunes. They can be followed on Facebook
