Seneca Mothers stand in solidarity with Ukraine

BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY SALAMANCA — The group of Seneca women Mothers of the Nation gathered on the Allegany Territory Tuesday to send a message of support to and expressing solidarity

with mothers, children and families of Ukraine.

The group hosted a luncheon at the Seneca Allegany Administration Building to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The focus for this year’s celebration is “breaking the bias” and raising awareness of women’s efforts to end inequality and discrimination.

“On this International

Women’s Day, it is especially important to pay tribute to and lend support to the Ukrainian people, as they struggle now daily against Russian military occupation, aggression and forced

removal,” the group said in a statement. “We express our heartfelt sympathies for the losses of human life the Ukraine people are enduring and the devastation to their country.”

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI The sixth seeded Silver Creek Varsity Basketball team made their way into the semifinals by beating the No. 11 Maple Grove team. For the quarterfinals, Silver Creek traveled to No. 3 Frewsburg and came away with a 67-59 victory.

In the semifinals at Jamestown Community College, the Silver Creek boys faced off against No. 2 Holland. Holland jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead. An Aidan Jamison 3-pointer brought Silver Creek back to within five only to be countered with a 3-point score from Holland. Very even play for the rest of the first quarter left the score at 17-9. Silver Creek came out hard in a second quarter that saw them outscore Holland 15-5. That run included two 3-point scores for Jamison and was capped with a 3-point score by Ray Cortez.

In the beginning of the third quarter, the Silver Creek offense stalled allowing Holland to surge back into a 37-28 advantage. A 7-3 Silver Creek spurt as the quarter ended moved the score to 40-35. Holland scored the first nine points in the final period taking the score to 49-35. From that point, Holland was able to hold on for a 64-49 win. Cortez was dominant for Silver Creek with 11 points in the fourth quarter and a game total of 25. Aidan Jamison added another eight points.

The sixth seeded Silver Creek Varsity girls basketball team also made it to the semifinals with a 70-28 win over Buffalo’s MST (Math, Science, & Technology Preparatory School), a No. 3 seed.

In the semifinals at JCC, Portville took an early 6-2 advantage over Silver Creek. That lead grew to 15-6 as the first quarter end-

ed. The deficit grew to 19-6 before back-to-back Abby Rice 3-pointers started a Silver Creek comeback that closed the score to 25-19 by halftime. An offensive collapse in the third quarter

by Silver Creek gave way to a 22-7 surge by Holland. An 8-point fourth quarter from Jade Bouvier helped Silver Creek build a 19-6 rally.

That still saw Silver Creek fall short 53-45 in the game.

Leading the scoring for Silver Creek was Rice with 16 points. Jade Bouvier added nine points and Malani Eldridge had six points.

Gowanda placed 5th in the D2 Large Varsity division of the Section 6 Cheerleader Championships held Feb. 12. Competing against larger schools including Starpoint and Newfane, Gowanda performed a solid routine with only 1 point deducted.

“We are looking forward to next season,” Gowanda coach Michelle Merrill said.

So. Tier residents urged to complete broadband survey Residents are encouraged to complete a state broadband survey to help determine the accessibility, reliability and affordability of high-speed internet in the Southern Tier.

“The pandemic laid bare how important access to high-speed, reliable internet is to our community,” Sen. George Borrello, R-Chautauqua County, said. “Access has always been a problem, but the digital divide became a digital chasm as people were forced to work from home and their children went to remote learning. The prevalence of ‘internet deserts’ is one of the biggest challeng-

es facing our rural communities.”

The New York State Department of Public Service will use the survey results to map broadband infrastructure across New York State and identify communities in need. The results of the survey will also help counties, towns and villages advocate for additional federal and state support for broadband expansion projects. The survey deadline is Friday, March 18.

Annual 4-H Solidarity Spaghetti Dinner continued from 1 March 27 at Cattaraugus County fairgrounds LITTLE VALLEY — The seventh annual 4-H Spaghetti Dinner to support Cattaraugus County 4-H will be held March 27 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Corporate Building at the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds.

Sponsored by the Livestock Committee, pre-sale tickets are $8 or $10 at the door. Tickets for children 7 and younger are $5.

Tickets are available at the Cattaraugus County 4-H office in Ellicottville.

There will also be a homemade pie auction beginning at 6 p.m. A basket raffle starts at 3 o’clock.

Proceeds raised at the spaghetti dinner will be used for improvements to various livestock areas at the fairgrounds.

Travis Tritt headlines second Catt.county fair concert Aug. 4

BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY LITTLE VALLEY — The Cattaraugus County Fair has announced the second of two country music concerts planned for this summer’s county fair.

Singer-songwriter Travis Tritt, a Marietta, Ga., native, will perform in front of the grandstand on Thursday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Opening act is the Desert City Ramblers.

This year’s county fair runs Aug. 1-6.

Tritt began his career in 1987 and has continued to record and perform regularly since. His current single is “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like That No More,” from the album “Set in Stone.”

It also spawned the singles “Ghost Town Nation” and Smoke in a Bar.” Tritt has received two Grammy Awards, both for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. The first in

1992 was for “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’,” a duet with Marty Stuart, and again in 1998 for “Same Old Train,” a collaboration with Stuart and nine other artists.

Tickets go on sale March 15 at 9 a.m. All tickets are sold only through etix.com.

Tickets are $45 for track seats or $35 for the grandstand plus gate admission.

All seating is reserved.

There will be chairs on the track this year.

Walker Hayes was announced as the first concert’s headliner in February and will perform Aug. 3.

The Seneca faced similar experiences in 1965 when 10,000 acres of their lands surrounding the Allegheny River were seized by the US Army Corps of Engineers to make way for the construction of the Kinzua Dam. Their homes were burned to the ground, their land flooded and their families forcibly displaced.

“The Mothers of the Nation convey our prayers for the people of Ukraine,” the group said. “We wish you strength to oppose your aggressors, the will to persevere in the face of extreme conditions, and pray that the Ukrainian people emerge stronger, overcome and thrive.”

In January 2022, the Mothers of the Nation, an entity provided for in the Seneca constitution, was re-established in an effort to reassert the role and authority of the women of the Seneca Nation.

The Mothers of the Nation organized a petition driv in January in opposition t President Matthew Pagels decision to enter into a set tlement agreement and pay more than $800 million in disputed gaming payment to New York state.

The Mothers were effec tive in bringing about an amended Council resolution that halted the disputed pay ments to the state on Feb. 12 The Mothers maintain tha their constitutional consen extends to the Gaming Com pact, and a new compact, a it is an agreement of signif icant magnitude with a for eign government.

Prior to the establishmen of a Seneca Republic in 1848 the Seneca were part of th Iroquois Confederacy, als known as the Haudenos aunee, or People of the Long house. The Iroquois wer renowned as a matrilineal matriarchal society. Wom en were instrumental in the traditional governanc structures.

The women retained sig nificant powers in the 184 Constitution in the form o consent for treaty-making The constitution said “th power of making treatie shall be vested in the Coun cil, subject to the approva of at least three-fourths o the legal voters and the con sent of three-fourths of th mothers of the Nation.”

Creatives Rebuild NY offers New York artists financial relief

BY DEB EVERTS Artists across New York state have an opportunity to ease their financial strains brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Feb. 14, Creatives Rebuild New York (CRNY) launched two funding opportunities aimed at providing transformational support for artists across the state. The $125 million, three-year initiative provides either guaranteed income or employment opportunities to 2,700 artists.

Hayden Haynes, a Seneca of the Cattaraugus Territory, is one of 10 artists in CRNY’s Artist Outreach Corps. As an artist organizer for the Southern Tier and Mohawk Valley, he answers questions and helps facilitate the application process for artists and organizations.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for this region,” he said. “You don’t have to be an accomplished, award-winning artist in order to qualify.”

Haynes said neither of the programs are merit-based, so applicants need not submit work samples to get juried-in. He said these programs are basically for artists in need who reside in underserved rural areas such as the Southern Tier.

CRNY’s Guaranteed Income for Artists Program will provide no-strings cash payments to 2,400 New York artists who demonstrate financial need. The selected artists will receive $1,000 per month for 18 months.

CRNY’s Artist Employment Program is specifically for New York state artists and the 501(c)(3) organizations they partner with to help better their communities with projects. Haynes said artists interested in this program and the organizations they want to work with must apply together and interview together.

Haynes said artists everywhere have been affected by the pandemic. He said a lot of the markets where they sell their art to make a living, or at least supplement their incomes, have been canceled. Referring to the performing arts, he said there haven’t been any in-person shows for a long time.

“It’s good to get money back into the hands of artists,” he said. “We’re help-

ing them in a positive way to kind of see them through this crisis that we continually seem to be in.”

Creatives Rebuild New York was conceived and principally funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the Ford Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. CRNY was formed to reactivate New York state’s creative economy after the devastating impact of COVID-19 and to secure the future of its artists.

“Today brings us one step closer to realizing a vision that was born just months into the pandemic when, through my work on the governor’s commission, it became clear that we needed to address the deep-rooted disconnect causing artists to not be seen as workers and to be compensated as such,” said Elizabeth Alexander, president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. “As we continue to envision and work towards our post-pandemic reality, it’s critical that we not overlook the artist workers whose labor is an essential part of our economy and whose contin-

ued work sustains us in our most joyful and our darkest hours.”

The Artist Employment Program will fund employment for 300 artists working in collaboration with community-based organizations or municipalities across the state. Participating artists will receive a salary of $65,000 per year, plus benefits and dedicated time to focus on their artistic practice. Partnering

organizations are eligible to receive funding to support artists’ employment.

Qualifying artistic disciplines include but are not limited to crafts, dance, design, film, literary, media, music, oral traditions, social practice, theater, performance art and traditional arts.
