I thank Attorney General Letitia James for this funding and for her focus on protecting consumers.” The Attorney General’s Office also recommended the creation of two new positions to handle the increased work: an Assistant County Attorney position that will be focused on enforcing home improvement contract violations set forth in Article 36-a, and a Deputy Commissioner of Public Advocacy position to oversee and facilitate the activities of DCP. These positions will be 100% state-funded. All services will be fully funded through the state funding. GOWANDA — With a 3-15 record, the Gowanda Varsity boys basketball team was a No. 14 seed for sectional play. Gowanda traveled to No. 11 Maple Grove Feb. 22 for a preliminary round game. Maple Grove got off to a fast start at 4-0 and soon grew that to 8-2. Down 127, Gowanda worked their way back to a 16-14 gap with Quentin Centner landing the last three of those points from long distance. Maple Grove built the lead back to 20-14 only to have Gowanda rally back again at the end of the quarter. Centner combined a field goal and successful foul shot with 28 seconds in the quarter to close the gap to three. Maple Grove answered with two points of their own before John Ondus landed a 3-pointer with seven seconds left on the clock. Starting at 22-20 going into the second quarter, Maple Grove outscored Gowanda 11-2 to once again pad their lead. Gowanda battled back once more, but still fell short 19-16 in the period leaving the score 41-36 at halftime. The third quarter was fiercely contested with Maple Grove adding a single point to the margin. They scored 21 points in the period to 20 for Gowanda. Starting the final quarter at 62-56, it looked like an exciting finish was in store. As it turned out, Maple Grove had their best quarter of the game while
Gowanda’s offense stalled. Scoring just six points in the final quarter, Gowanda finished their season with a 91-62 loss. Gowanda was led by Odnus with 24 points including four 3-pointers. Centner had two 3-pointers, went 3-of-3 from the foul line and totaled 19 points in the game. Tyler Smith and Adam Golden had nine and six points, respectively. Maple Grove was at No. 6 Silver Creek on Feb. 23. Silver Creek prevailed in that game by a 64-52 score to move on to the quarerfinal Feb. 25 at No. 3 Frewsburg. Frewburg had beaten Silver Creek twice during the season and started out up 12-0 in this game. At that point the Silver Creek coach called a time out. For the rest of the quarter, Silver Creek went on a 12-7 run tightening things to 19-12. Frewsburg opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer on the way to stretching their advantage to 26-16. An 8-2 streak for Silver Creek brought the score to 26-22. With 3 seconds left in the half, a 3-point shot left Silver Creek down by just three, 30-27. Silver Creek took the lead and blew things open with an 18-9 blitz in the third quarter taking the score to 45-39. They were able to carry that to a final 67-59 win. The two teams combined for 20 3-point baskets, seven of in the final period. Leading Silver Creek was Ray
Cortez with 26 points. Matt Woleben had 16 points. Aidan Jamison and Simon White had 13 and 10 points, respectively. Silver Creek moved on to face Holland in the semifinal at Jamestown Community College. The No. 7 Gowanda Varsity girls basketball team finished the season 9-11 and were at No. 2 Portville on Feb. 24. Portville got off to a fast start and were up 2311 after the first quarter. The Gowanda offense went into a mid-game slump only scoring 10 points in the second and third quarters combined, with the score at 4721 going to the final quarter. While that was the most even quarter of the game, it was more than enough to gain Portville a 58-31 win. Aailyah Steven led Gowanda with 11 points. On Feb. 25 and 26, the 59th Annual NYSPHAA Intersectional Wrestling Championships were held at Albany. Springville-Griffith Institute was represented by Nick Brown in the 160 weight class in Division 2. Brown finished second in his weight class. After a Round 1 bye, he won a 10-5 decision over Anthony Pipia (Port Jefferson). Brown followed that with two wins by pin against Emmett Wood (Tioga) in 5:30 and Brady Buttice (Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton) in 1:25. In the finals, Brown faced Carter Baer (Gouverneur), losing that match by Technical Fall (18-2).
