Gowanda Sports Report BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity boys basketball team opened the week Feb. 14 at North Collins. Gowanda was slow getting out of the gate, but was still only down 9-6 after the first quarter. Outscored 17-8 in the next period, Gowanda was in a 26-14 hole at halftime. North Collins’ best quarter was the third as they added 19 more to their tally. While Gowanda nearly doubled their point total in the period, they still slipped to a 45-27 deficit with one quarter left. A 24-point Gowanda effort in the final quarter narrowed the gap by eight points, but not enough to avoid a 61-51 loss. Adam Golden led Gowanda with 14 points. Going 4-for-4 from the foul line and hitting one 3-point basket, Tyler Smith was right behind with 13 points. Also in double digits, and with two 3-pointers in the game, was Quentin Centner with 10 points. The Gowanda boys closed out their regular season hosting Silver Creek. This was also Senior Night and the senior members of the team and cheer squad were recognized, along with their parents, before the game. Team

Jim Brucato at Art’s Café Acoustic Lunch Series SPRINGVILLE,NY – Art’s Cafe is kicking off regular music with “Acoustic Lunch.” Buffalo Music Hall of Famer Jim Brucato shares a soulful set of tunes every Wednesday from 11:30-1pm. With a background in jazz composition, and decades of experience on bass and guitar, Brucato is sure to please everyone with his wide range of songs. The son of a professional musician, Brucato taught himself to play guitar during the folk boom of the late 50s and early 60s after he caught
onto three-part harmonies like those found in the Kingston Trio. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston in the late 80s; two of his later songs were honored as “songs of the year” in the Berklee program. After playing with numerous groups in Buffalo, and even touring nationally, Brucato formed The Thirds with musician friends Charlie O’Neill and Joe Head, where he played bass. He is also a member of Billy McEwen & The Soul Invaders amongst many other
performing groups. He has taught music classes at Erie Community College for the past 13 years. Art’s Café was designed to create an intersection of food, the arts and a great community. The Café is owned by Café workers, as well local residents-turned-investors, in partnership with Springville Center for the Arts. Located at 5 E. Main Street in Springville, Art’s Café is now open Wednesday through Saturday from 9am to 4pm and serves lunch daily.

Lucas Brawdy said he would start some seniors who would not ordinarily be starting for Senior Night. As the game went along, it was also obvious that the team was making an extra effort to get the ball to seniors under the basket. After nearly two scoreless minutes in the first period, Silver Creek scored to go up 2-0. Just over a minute later, Gowanda finally scored. A previous Silver Creek foul shot saw them still ahead 3-2. The lead went back and forth with Gowanda working their way to a 1410 advantage. The edge closed to a single point as Silver Creek scored at the buzzer. The following successful foul shot brought the score down to 16-15 in Gowanda’s favor. With an 11-2 blitz to start the second quarter, Silver Creek moved into an eight-point lead, 26-18. Gowanda countered with a 9-5 run of their
own to close the period. The last two of those five Silver Creek points came with a single second left on the clock. Starting the third quarter with a 31-27 lead, Silver Creek extended that to 44-37 by the end of the period. By mid-fourth quarter the score was 56-43 with all six of the Gowanda points being scored by Tyler Smith. From that point, Silver Creek was able to hold on for a 63-48 final victory. Gowanda’s Quentin Centner, Tyler Smith and Adam Golden each had 10 points. As in the previous game, Smith was perfect from the foul line, hitting 2-for 2. John Ondus added eight points, including 6 points from 3-point range. For Silver Creek, Ray Cortez led the way with 30 points. Another 19 points were contributed by Shawn Kelly Jr. who had a career-high day including five 3-pointers. The Gowanda Varsity girls basketball started their week Feb. 15 at Portville. Gowanda moved into an early 8-4 lead. They would hold on for an 11-8 advantage after one quarter. Portville roared back in the second quarter, outscoring Gowanda 10-4, taking an 18-15 lead at halftime. Gowanda

Seneca Council votes to halt casino payments pending review BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY IRVING — The Seneca Nation Council passed a resolution Saturday requiring a review and final determination by the National Indian Gaming Commission on whether additional revenue-sharing payments to New York state are lawful under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. That decision follows a settlement agreement signed by Seneca Nation President Matthew Pagels and Gov. Kathy Hochul on Jan. 12 to end the five-year Class III gaming compact payment dispute.“The Department of Interior and National Indian Gaming Commission have raised concerns about the legality of the continued reve-
nue share payments under the Seneca Nation’s gaming Compact and commenced a review of the matter several months ago,” Pagels told the Times Herald Monday. “To date, neither agency has issued an official report, nor taken any legal action.”The Mothers of the Nation, a group of Seneca women organized under the Seneca Constitution, commended the Council for passing a resolution at the regular session Saturday on the Cattaraugus Territory.This came less than five days after the Mothers organized a petition drive Feb. 8 and gathered signatures of Seneca women who deem the settlement agreement invalid. On Thursday, Marie E. Williams, former executive director of the Seneca Gaming Authority, filed a challenge of the legality of the agreement in Seneca Nation Courts.Williams’ legal filing
is focused on the “assessed costs” that go beyond the provisions of the compact and illegal payments that she says Pagels buried in the agreement. Further, a Sept. 15, 2021 letter from Assistant Secretary of the Interior Bryan Newland ex-

Down 39-20 going into the final quarter, Gowanda outscored Portville 15-12 in the period, including 3-pointers by Autumn Nephew and Lena Stevens. It was not enough to avoid a 51-35 loss. Aailyah Stevens headed up the Gowanda attack with nine points. Crissa Scanlan contributed another eight points. Gowanda’s Autumn Nephew and Lena Stevens each had 6 points. The team was at Springville/West Valley on Feb. 16 for a non-league contest. Springville edged Gowanda by a single point in each of the first two quarters, 10-9 and 11-10, for a 21-19 advantage at the half. Gowanda rallied back in the third quarter, outscoring Springville 13-6 to pull into a 32-27 lead. A 16-point final period carried Gowanda to a 48-38 win. On Feb. 17 at Falconer, the home team opened hitting from 3-point range and
quickly grew into a 7-0 early lead. With the score at 11-4, Aaliyah Stevens scored twice for Gowanda to tighten the game to 11-8. Even scoring for the rest of the quarter left the score 16-12 at the end of the period. An 18-6 second quarter expanded the Falconer lead to 34-18 by halftime. That grew to 45-29 in the third quarter. From that point, Falconer rolled on to a 55-36 final. Stevens had 13 points to pace Gowanda. Lena Stevens was second with seven points followed by Autumn Nephew and Aurora Stevens with six points each. – The Gowanda boys bowling team was at Airport Lanes in Cheektowaga on Feb. 16 for the Boys Section VI playoffs. Maryvale came away with first in Division II, in Class C and overall with a six-game pin total of 6,485. The Gowanda team finished ninth in Class D and 15th in Division II with game totals of 805, 830, 854, 794, 791 and 806 for a combined total of 4,880. Top bowler for the Gowanda boys was Johnny Smuda (163-179-223-190-224171/1,150). Also bowling full six-game sets were David Malek (189-177-182-177-145167/1,037), Drew Shull (183146-179-136-126-211/981) and Kenny Steklasa (14817 7-1 43-178 -16 0 -15 2/958). Bowling three games each
were Nicholas Smuda (400 total pins) and Nathan Warrior (354 pins). Springville (808744-716-801-798-752/4619) finished 18th in Division II and 10th in Class C. Top bowler for Springville was Simon George (163-193-189-179-152199/1,075). On Feb. 17, the Gowanda girls had Sectionals playoffs. Finishing first in Division II and Class C was Springville (813 - 7 7 3 - 79 8 - 879 - 7 5 4893/4,910). Dunkirk was 70 pins behind them in second place with 4,840 pins. Top bowler for Springville was Megan Schneider (148-163179-255-157-169/1071). The Gowanda girls finished 16th in Division II and eighth in Class D with games of 595, 638, 704, 717, 632 and 679 for a 3,965 series total. The Gowanda girls were led by Cameron Nagel (141-154-175151-143-131/895). Also bowling six-game series were Aubrey Smuda (119-149-158-176-133133/868), Demetra Spire (107-127142-130-136-144/786) and Mary Denea (117-116-115-132128-166/774). With 3-game series totals were Paige Szalay (334) and Cami Clark (308). The Section VI boys swimming teams competed Feb. 14 and 15 at the state qualifier meet at the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo. A 180.2 total score earned Maryvale
first as a team. Springville was close behind in third with 178. Two spots back from Springville was Eden/ Gowanda with 173.5. Neither

Top Springville performances were turned in by Connor Hughey (74th, 82.0) and Connor Yetter (106th, 73.5).
