Gowanda Sports Report

The home match saw both the boys and girls teams post 4-0 wins. Johnny Smuda had a 604 series with games of 172, 208 and 224 to lead the Gowanda boys. With series in the 400s were Kenny Steklasa (168-158-173/499), Drew Shull (162-134-171/467) and David Malek (160-159136/455). Three girls with 400-range series were Cameron Nagel (150-142-147/439), Aubrey Smuda (159-129134/422) and Demetra Spire (136-142-136/414). Right behind were Cami Clark (14597-139/381) and Mary Denea (108-121-146/375). At Ellico ville on Jan. 19, the story was much the same. Both the boys and the girls came away with 4-0 wins again. This time, the Gowanda boys were led by Shull (194-187-175/556) with Steklasa (185-199-161/545) right behind. Malek had a 428 series rolling games of 131, 167 and 130. Nicholas Smuda contributed games of 129, 116 and 103 for a 348 series. Once again, the Gowanda girls were led by Nagel (150-146-156/452). Close behind her were Sierra Twoguns (161-138-111/410), Spire (134-115-127/376) and Denea (140-133-100/373). Following the two wins against Ellico ville, the bowling teams were at Salamanca on Jan. 20. The score was 3-1 in both cases with the girls taking a win and the boys falling just short. A er dropping the fi rst two games, the Gowanda boys had their best effort of the match in game three with a total of 1,071 pins. That was the only game totaling over 1,000 pins for either team.

Community Encouraged to Submit Nominations for the NCCF’s Footprints Award DUNKIRK, NY – The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation (NCCF) is currently accepting nominations for the George B. Weaver Jr. Footprints Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize and honor those in the community who have created “footprints” for others to follow in through their philanthropy and volunteerism. It is not a requirement that nominees have an affiliation with the NCCF. “We encourage community members to nominate those who are passionate about northern Chautauqua and who consistently demonstrate their passion by selflessly giving of their own time and funds,” says

Nominees should have a strong history of volunteerism, philanthropic endeavors (financial support not necessarily measured in number of dollars), and activities that have impacted the community and enhanced the social and cultural climate of northern Chautauqua County. GOWANDA, NY — The Gowanda Varsity boys basketball team on Jan. 18 traveled to Silver Creek. Down 4-2 early, Gowanda rallied to take an 11-4 lead, but Silver Creek worked their way back. A 3-point basket gave Silver Creek a 16-15 lead and they didn’t look back. As Gowanda’s offense faltered, Silver Creek went on to score the last 10 points of the fi rst quarter taking the score to 26-15. Things stabilized a bit for Gowanda in the second period allowing them to keep pace with Silver Creek to a 37-25 hal ime score. Silver Creek pulled away in the second half. The score was 56-37 a er three quarters heading towards a 71-43 fi nal. Quentin Centner topped Gowanda scoring with 16 points and Tyler Smith contributed 7 points. Leading the way for Silver Creek were Ray Cortes and Ma Woleben with 24 points and 23 points, respectively. The Gowanda boys were back home on Jan. 20 to host Frewsburg. Gowanda showed promise early taking a quick 5-2 lead. They led 10-8 a er one quarter as Centner scored with 26 seconds le in the period. While Gowanda doubled their score in the second period, Frewsburg tripled theirs to take a 24-20 lead. In the fi nal two quarters, both teams roughly matched their second quarter production leading to a 58-42 Frewsburg win. Centner led the scoring for Gowanda with 11 points. Right behind were John Ondus and Adam Golden 10 and 8 points, respectively. — The Gowanda bowling teams had back-to-back home and away matches with Ellico ville on Jan. 18 and 19.
