CCE Welcomes New Master Gardener Volunteer Program Coordinator BY EMILY REYNOLDS AND DICK RIVERS

GOWANDA, NY — The Gowanda Varsity boys basketball team played Portville on Jan. 10. Portville opened up the scoring from long distance and soon had a 5-0 lead, stretching that to 10-2 before Quentin Centner landed a 3-point shot that started a 10-point run for Gowanda. That ended with a John Ondus 3-pointer with 9 seconds left in the quarter to put Gowanda up 12-10. Ondus opened the second quarter with another three points stretching the lead to five. Portville soon tied the game at 15. Gowanda had one more lead at 18-17 before Portville moved back ahead. A 3-point score followed by a field goal with 17 seconds to go in the half gave them a 22-18 advantage at the intermission. With Portville up 37-25 in quarter three, Ondus added three points with 26 seconds to go and two more with 5 seconds left in the quarter to shrink the Portville lead to seven. Then, at the buzzer, Portville launched a Hail Mary shot from a few feet beyond mid-court. As that shot swished through the hoop, the quarter ended at 40-30. Portville then held on through the final quarter for a 59-45 win. Ondus totaled 23 points in the game for Gowanda, including hitting six times from 3-point territory. There is always something to do or someone in need, and I would not want it any other way. JAMESTOWN,N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties have partnered together to bolster the Master Gardener Volunteer program in each of our counties. While the program in Chautauqua has been successful for several years now, it lacked the dedicated staff support that it deserves. Cattaraugus is currently redeveloping a Master Gardener Volunteer Program. “The Partnership just made sense” remarked Dick Rivers and Emily Reynolds, Executive Directors. “Partnerships like this help Cornell Cooperative Extension meet the needs of the residents of our counties.” CCE is very excited to welcome Shannon Rinow as Program Coordinator. She has provided a brief biography to introduce herself. “My name is Shannon Rinow, and I am so excited to begin this new adventure as your new Master Gardener Volunteer Program Coordinator for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties! Since I was a young girl, gardening and agriculture have been a passion of mine. I recall helping tie posts at my grandparent’s grape farm at a young age and harvesting vegetables and flowers from their home garden. I have had my own garden for the past decade, and each summer as the sweet smell of

Maple Grove would take that to 19-7 before Gowanda closed the gap to 19-12. A long-range score with 5 seconds left would give Maple Grove a 22-12 lead after one quarter. Maple Grove opened quarter two with nine unanswered points before Gowanda scored again. Down 40-17, Gowanda started to close the gap outscoring Maple Grove 8-2 to a 42-24 halftime. Unable to keep pace with Maple Grove in the second half, the third quarter ended at 61-37 heading towards a final score of 77-45. Cole Herman and Smuda each had 11 points for Gowanda to lead the team with Ondus adding nine points. The Gowanda Varsity girls basketball team was at Maple Gove on Jan. 11. In a slow opening quarter, Gowanda took an early 4-0 lead. Maple Grove managed to tie the score at 4 with 2:50 showing on the clock. That score was unchanged until a Maple Grove 3-pointer put them up 7-4 with 15 seconds left in the first quarter. After three scoreless minutes in quarter two, Maple Grove hit from long range again. They eventually stretched their lead to 19-7 on the way to a 22-11 halftime score. While Maple Grove owned the third quarter and Gowanda the fourth, both teams added a total of
