Nearly 1,000 students in 12 Cattaraugus County public schools have tested positive for COVID-19 since September.

13th Annual Triathalon supports suicide awareness efforts in Chautauqua County MAYVILLE, NY — Winter months in Western New York can feel isolating and we know that mental wellness can be impacted by the seasons. With limited activities in the winter months, this was one of the reasons the Kick Cabin Fever (KCF)

Indoor Triathlon was started. This year’s thirteenth annual event will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 9 a.m. at Chautauqua Health and Fitness in the Turner Community Center at 4840 W. Lake Rd. in Chautauqua, N.Y.

Cheryl Burns, a local triathlete began the indoor triathlon one year after her brother Marty Miller died by suicide due to several years of depression. The intent of this event is to get people moving during one of the toughest winter months

in Chautauqua County.

first and worked their way into an 115 firstperiod lead. By the end of the period, Gowanda managed to shrink that lead to 1312.

Cassadaga Valley stretched their advantage out to 2514 in the second period.

Gowanda battled back to 2720 by halftime. Gowanda opened the second half with six straight points. Just past the middle of the third period, the score was tied at 32.

From there, Gowanda ran up their own 4136 lead. Cassadaga Valley worked back into a tie at 49. The score was also tied at 53 before Cassadaga Valley scored six unanswered points to win the game 5953. Centner again led Gowanda scoring with 16 points. With 12 points each were Ondus and John Smuda.

The Gowanda Varsity girls basketball team had took on Pioneer on Jan. 6.

Pioneer opened the scoring a minute and a half into the first quarter. A score from long distance brought the score to 50 before Gowanda got going. Nearly midway into the period, Aailyah Stevens got Gowanda on the board with a field goal plus an extra point from the foul line. Pioneer then opened up a 125 lead before Chloe Luther scored for Gowanda to close the period at 127.

Gowanda continued to struggle through the second period. With 28 seconds

GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity boys basketball team hosted CattaraugusLittle Valley Jan. 3 for a nonleague game. Cattaraugus opened the scoring quickly hitting from long range. Gowanda countered by running up seven straight points. After Cattaraugus tightened the score to 75, John Ondus scored from the corner to make Gowanda’s total 10.

Cattaraugus rallied to tie.

Two Gowanda scores in the last 30 seconds of the first quarter left the score 1411.

Cattaraugus surged in the second quarter, tying the game at 19 on the way to a 2823 lead. That margin held until halftime when the score was 2530. Gowanda closed the gap slightly in the third quarter only to have a Cattaraugus score at the buzzer cutting the Cattaraugus lead to 4238.

Early in the final quarter, Cattaraugus got the score to 4641, but Gowanda turned up their game and shut Cattaraugus down for the rest of the game. Starting with a Quentin Centner threepointer, Gowanda outscored Cattaraugus 120 in the last half of the fourth quarter for their first win of the season, 5346. Top scorer for Gowanda was Centner with 18 points. Right behind him were Ondus (14 points) and Tyler Smith (11 points).

Local libraries get creative to bring patrons back

BY DEB EVERTS The ongoing coronavirus pandemic continues to keep many patrons away from their local libraries, but staff are finding creative ways to draw people back.

Several librarians say people are beginning to return to their favorite libraries.

Linda McCubbin, director of the Memorial Library of Little Valley, said they didn’t get as many kids at the library this year, but the adults are coming back.

They managed to hold a few small fundraisers including their annual Christmas in July that was held virtually.

They’ve also done a few little book sales and some other fundraising the same way.

“During the pandemic, people would either call and tell me what books they wanted and I’d hang them outside on a hook, or we did a front porch delivery for a while,” she said.

According to McCubbin, the library had its largest summer reading program ever with 42 kids completing the program. She said 32 are already planning to sign up again next summer.

“It was a grab-andgo,” she said. “We selected the books and the parents picked them up at the library on Fridays. That way, they got to do their summer reading at home when it was convenient for them. There was a snack, a craft, a coloring sheet and books in each

bag.”

The crochet group is back and they’ve talked about doing some book clubs.

McCubbin said they’re planning a program where she either picks books out and delivers them to the readers, or they can call and request books that can also be delivered.

McCubbin thinks the library in Little Valley and other small libraries in the area are important. One reason is because they can provide internet service and wifi to the public that is not affordable or available for many households. People can also have documents scanned and faxed.

The Cattaraugus Free Library has a lot going on. Director Lori Antholzner said they’re seeing growth, as far as new patrons. During the pandemic, they’ve been researching and trying to find creative ways to draw-in patrons.

The library partners with the Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School on several different programs, including one focusing on blended families and another being the Letters to Santa program before Christmas.

According to Antholzner, they’ve been working very diligently and took advantage of a disadvantage. She said they’ve been updating and modern-

Erie County DOH expands COVID19 testing capacity, info line hours ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) has expanded its COVID19 testing capacity, with extended evening hours, weekend appointments and additional sites, including in the city of Buffalo. The COVID19 Information Line hours on weekdays will also expand to 7 p.m.

Appointments are still required for free ECDOH COVID19 testing; call (716) 8582929. Any Erie County resident with COVID19 symptoms will be eligible for the rapid ID Now COVID19 test, with results in about 15 minutes. Any Erie County resident who does not have COVID19 symptoms will be eligible to get a PCR COVID19 test, with results provided in 13 business days. A COVID19 test is recommended if an individual has COVID19 symptoms, and if they have had an exposure. A COVID19 test is recommended 57 days after the last contact with a positive case, regardless of vaccination status.

“Demand for COVID19 testing is extremely high, and driven by the number of new cases and close contacts, and by people who are experiencing COVID19 symptoms,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale

Burstein. “Our department is responding to this need by expanding our testing operations in the new year, and also with the recent distribution of nearly 80,000 athome COVID19 antigen tests to the general public.”

She continued, “If you have any COVID19 symptoms, please stay home and away from other people.

Mask use continues to be a protective measure against infection, and the best mask for you is one that you wear properly – tight to your face with no gaps between your face and the mask edge – and consistently.”

The New York State Department of Health has opened additional COVID19 test sites center at the Northwest Buffalo Community Center on Lawn Avenue, the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College. See www.erie.gov/covidtest for details.

The Bank of Cattaraugus hosted a Santa Claus Coming to Town event on Dec. 10 at the library.

“Instead of having the kids sit down and do the crafts at the library, we had all the materials ready to go for them to take home,” she said. “Each child got either a craft or a goodie bag, plus a new book.”

Following the explosive surge in quarter three, Gowanda stalled in the fourth. Gowanda would not score at all in the period.

Pioneer continued to roll on to a final 4428 score.

— In other sports action, the Gowanda bowling teams faced AlleganyLimestone on Jan. 3. The boys earned a 40 win while the girls came up short 04. books. She said libraries have to adjust their services to continue to thrive and the more services they can provide, the better.

“Anything we can do to help the community is going to help our library,” she said. “In early spring, we won honorable mention for The Joseph F. Shubert Library Excellence Award, so we are definitely making great strides in Cattaraugus.”

At the Salamanca Public Library, manager Jennifer Stickles said the pandemic is still keeping many patrons away, but they eased back into library programs and events again this spring.

Their story time programs are back and they had a summer reading program.

REPCO brought in a variety of live reptiles and amphibians for the kids. Penny Minner started offering crafting classes in the evenings.

“We want to get people coming back in and to remember that we are still here,” Stickles said. “We are trying to increase the services that our patrons were used to, pre-COVID.” According to Stickles, the staff did a lot of genealogy research because many people got into that during their downtime. She said it was good for the staff because it gave them projects to work on for the public.

The library is fully open now. Stickles said people can come in, but they still have to wear a mask. People who don’t have internet access or a computer at home can come to the library and use the computers or wifi that’s available 24/7.

“Although it’s been quieter, I feel there are new people utilizing the library and it’s been nice to see them coming in,” she said. “Newcomers are signing up for library cards, using the computers or other services that we have. Of course, we want all our patrons to find their way back to us.”

THE CATTARAUGUS COUNTY Health Department reported 155 new residents testing positive for COVID-19 on Monday. A record 224 cases were reported last Wednesday and Friday.

The new cases pushed the total number of cases since March 2020 over the 13,000 mark.

There were also two deaths reported Monday: two women, ages 66 and 51, respectively. The deaths pushed the county’s COVID-19 toll to 219 since April 23, 2020.

The high number of cases is likely due to the omicron variant edging out the less transmissible, but more dangerous, delta variant that gripped the county in December, Dr. Kevin D.

Watkins, the county’s public health director, said.

Cases have not been confirmed by genomic sequencing tests, but the numbers are rising so quickly that it is likely due to omicron, Watkins added.

“We’re asking our residents to continue to be vigilant,” he said.

More at-home COVID-19 test kits were distributed Monday at the County Office Building in Olean. The remaining boxes will be distributed Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of the Olean building, Watkins said.

The county has received 6,000 test kits, although that is not sufficient for a county of 76,000 residents, he said. Schools also received 17,000 test kits through BOCES to be distributed to students to take home.

Those who test positive at home should notify the county health department and be prepared to quarantine at home for at least five days. The health department’s website has instructions on quarantining.

mendations and the state requirement that everyone wear masks in indoor public facilities, maintain a social distance and wash your hands frequently, Watkins said.

The county’s daily positivity Monday was 13.5% and the seven-day rolling average was 12%.

“We’re still in that upward surge,” Watkins said.

“This variant has really affected a large number of people. It seems to have the ability to evade our immune system.”

Watkins said only 50.5% of county residents are fully vaccinated. An undetermined number of residents have also received a vaccine booster. “Getting boosted will reduce transmission of the omicron variant,” he added.

The health department is no longer doing contact tracing of contacts of positive residents because of the

widespread nature of the virus, Watkins said on Friday.

Residents who test positive are notified and asked to contact close contacts to urge them to isolate or quarantine for five days. The 10day quarantine period was shortened by the CDC last week to five days. People should continue to wear a mask for an additional five days or test negative.

The 155 new cases Monday pushed the total to 13,112 cases. The county reported 77 at-home positive tests were included in Monday’s total. The new cases included 29 residents who had been vaccinated and 126 who were unvaccinated.

There have been 1,272 cases reported in the first 10 days of this month. That represents about 46.7% of the county total since March 2020.

The southeast part of the county has reported a total of 6,129 cases — 456 since

Jan. 1. There have been 300 new cases in the southwest part of the county since Jan 1 for a total of 2,638; 288 new cases in the northeast for a total of 2,510 and 192 cases in the northwest for a total of 1,835.

There have been 664 new cases involving women since Jan. 1 for a total of 6,901 cases, and 571 cases of men for a total of 6,211.

Public Input Being Sought for Mayville Strategic Waterfront Activation Effort CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, NY – The Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG), Village of Mayville, and the Chautauqua Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC) invite all local residents, business owners, and stakeholders to kick off the Mayville Strategic Waterfront Activation effort.

The Village of Mayville’s Lakeside Park is a community resource with cultural, recreational, and scenic value. The historic train depot, boat launch, beach, floating stage, and other amenities have established Lakeside Park as a local and regional asset. However, park facilities have degraded over time and some of the properties surrounding the park are underutilized.

In addition, more amenities could be added to the park, thereby improving its use.

With the recent approval of The Lodge project (a 34 unit condominium resort) adjacent to the Park, there is a growing need to access Lakeside Park and the West Lake Road (SR 394) corridor, and identify necessary and opportune improvements.

The intent of this effort is to understand the existing conditions within and surrounding Lakeside Park, collect public input to identify key issues and opportu-

nities, and develop a Master Plan for facility enhancements and funding opportunities.

Mark Geise, Deputy County Executive Director for Economic Development and CEO of the CCIDA, said, “The Mayville waterfront is a gem, and we are so excited that we can be a part of making it even more accessible to the public by creating more things for people to enjoy. The whole idea is to activate the waterfront for use by the citizens of Chautauqua County, and at the same time attract tourists from throughout the region to visit and spend money here.

Erie County DOH vaccine clinics off COVID19 booster doses to all eligible ERIE COUNTY, NY – Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) COVID19 vaccine clinics are offering booster doses to anyone who is currently eligible.

ECDOH COVID19 vaccine clinics follow CDC and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) guidance for booster administration. Individuals who completed a Pfizer or Moderna COVID19 vaccine series at least five months ago are eligible for a booster dose.

The previous interval was at least six months.

Children and people ages 5 years and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised may receive an additional primary dose of Pfizer vaccine 28 days after their second Pfizer dose. Parents and

guardians of children with immunocompromising conditions should consult their child’s physician. People ages 18 years or older who completed their Moderna COVID19 vaccine primary series should plan to get an additional primary dose at least 28 days after their second dose.

Adolescents ages 12 to 17 should receive a Pfizer booster five months after completing their initial Pfizer vaccine series. Previously, a Pfizer booster was authorized for people ages 16 and older. Booster shots are available to everyone ages 12 years and older who is fully vaccinated. Today, NYSDOH announced a #VaxForKids campaign to increase vaccination rates among children age 5 and older.

She hiked all three trail systems (in entirety) highlighted in the Passport: the Chautauqua County Overland Trails – the Earl Cardot Eastside Overland Trail and the Fred J. Cusimano Westside Overland Trail; and the Chautauqua County Rails to Trails system.

To complete the Passport, Anderson hiked over 72 miles of Chautauqua County trails!

“I logged a lot of beautiful miles and took lots of friends on trails they had never been on,” said Anderson. “It’s great to share our resources and beautiful trails and parks with friends and newcomers. It was a great experience, and I had so much fun seeing all the trails end to end.”

She looks forward to many more years and miles of enjoyment on Chautauqua County trails.
