C Seneca Foundation plans yearlong good health events IRVING — As the JC Seneca Foundation enters its second decade, Seneca Nation business owner J.C. Seneca has announced the kickoff of a yearlong calendar of good health events aimed at extending the foundation’s impact. With the creation of the foundation in 2012, Seneca’s mission was to advance healthy living in body, mind and spirit for the people of the Seneca Nation and surrounding communities. Since then, the foundation has become an integral part of the WNY Community through sponsorships of charitable programs and initiatives, and partnerships with G-Health Enterprises and Harmonia Col-
laborative Care, all of which have promoted health care and mental health services for people of all ages. “Today’s health and care challenges can be overwhelming,” Seneca said. “It’s not only the physical and mental suffering. It’s the associated medical care costs, which for many are impossible to manage even if they can somehow afford health insurance.” Seneca said he wants to expand the reach of the foundation to issues that are at the root of health problems before they become life-threatening. Each month of 2022, the foundation will offer community events that will provide information and
guidance about nutrition, preventative and holistic treatments and health care options in ways that are more accessible to people who otherwise have no access, Seneca said. The events begin Jan. 11 with a COVID-19 booster pop-up at Seneca’s Native Pride Travel Plaza on the Tallchief Territory from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The popup will be administered in partnership with Dr. Raul Vazquez and his G-Health/ GBUAHN Enterprises Medical Practice. Free COVID testing is already available on the Tallchief Territory with the schedule posted at jcsenecafoundation.org. “The JCSF Good Health
Plan will include the February announcement of a major health care partnership, aimed at bringing much-needed medical services to the Cattaraugus and Allegany territories and surrounding communities,” Seneca said. “The following monthly events will offer preventative education and care for diseases and conditions that persistently threaten the wellbeing of Native and all people. eight points. The team had a much better result the next night against Maple Grove. The opening period saw Maple Grove roll out to an early 6-0 lead. They improved that to 10-3 before Gowanda finally got their game in gear. Gao:wisa:s Stevens hit from 3-point range with a minute left in the quarter. Then, with just six seconds on the clock, Chloe Luther landed a shot for three points of her own, bringin the score to 10-9. The second quarter was much like the first. Midway through the period, Gowanda managed to tie the score at 15. They briefly took a 17-16 lead with 31 seconds on the clock. Eleven seconds later, Maple Grove regained the lead from 3-point range. With the score 19-17 in favor of Maple Grove starting the third quarter, there would be no scoring for almost three minutes. Then, backto-back scores from Crissa Scanlan got Gowanda going with a 23-19 advantage. Maple Grove added a single point from the foul line in the final minute of the quarter. The final quarter was all Gowanda as they outscored Maple Grove 8-2 to close out a 31-22 victory. Once again, Gao:wisa:s Stevens totaled 10 points to lead Gowanda. Scanlan and Aailyah Stevens added eight and six points, respectively.
The Gowanda Varsity girls basketball team came into the Frewsburg Holiday Tournament with a 4-0 record, facing Frewsburg in a Dec. 28 game. Fifteen seconds into the game, Crissa Scanlan hit one of two shots from the foul line to give Gowanda the first point of the game. Frewsburg quickly erased that answering with a score from 3-point range. Chloe Luther tied the game at three for Gowanda. From that point, Frewsburg ran up seven straight points to grab a 10-3 advantage. They were able to push that to 19-7 by the end of the first quarter. A sluggish second quarter worked in Gowanda’s favor for several minutes. Energized by a Gao:wisa:s Stevens 3-pointer, Gowanda outpaced Frewsburg 5-3 to bring the score to 22-12 with two minutes left in the half. A score from long range then started a seven-point streak from Frewsburg bring the halftime score to 29-12. Despite scoring 14 points in the third quarter, making it Gowanda’s best of the night, they fell further behind as Frewsburg countered with 19. With the game out of reach, 48-26, Frewsburg continued to stretch the lead to a final score of 69-34. Candidates emerge for seats in Springville Village Government SPRINGVILLE, NY – A new crop of leaders has emerged vying for three seats in Village Government. Allison Duwe announced her candidacy for Mayor, along with Mary Padasak and Lindsay Buncy for Trustee of the Village of Springville. Campaign materials outlined a vision of a bustling, sustainable, and engaged community with recreation opportunities for all, and attractive to both young families and seniors aging in place. “We see Springville as full of possibilities. We want to set a tone in Village Government that is positive and proactive,” Duwe said. She outlined hopes to open up better communication between the Village, Town, School, organizations, and residents. “The only way we can tackle the tough stuff is by bringing everyone together. I look forward to a regular series of open forums where the Village can receive input.” Allison Duwe is a baker and manager at Art’s Cafe, a community-owned business. In partnership with Springville Center for the Arts, Art’s Cafe rehabilitated a collapsed and dangerous Main Street building that has since been cited around the state as a model for small-town revitalization and won an award from the American Institute of Architects. A 1997 SGI graduate, Allison attended college in Ohio and traveled extensively before purchasing a home with her husband in the Village of Springville.
Duwe served as the Executive Director of the Coalition for Economic Justice, a nonprofit that worked with both labor and religious groups to address poverty. She was a founding member of the research and policy think tank, Partnership for the Public Good. Duwe is presently in her third term on the Springville Board of Education, one of the area’s largest employers with an annual budget of $40 million. She has served as President of the Board for eight years during which time she oversaw the hiring of Kimberly Moritz and most recently James Bialasik as Superintendent, millions in capital improvements to the school, and the creation of the P-Tech program through a new partnership with Alfred College and BOCES. She is the mother of three children who all begrudgingly completed the WNY Hiking Challenge. Mary Padasak is an experienced environmental manager with General Mills. Mary graduated from Springville-Griffith Institute, then went on to
earn a BS in Environmental Science and Policy / Biology from Clarkson University. She was an Environmental Engineer at Encorus Group on Mechanic Street for ten years where she worked on stormwater design and permitting, bulk storage permitting, SEQR, and most recently, geotechnical assistance. She worked on the North Country Energy Storage Project, headed by the New York Power Authority. Mary lives in Springville with her son. She is very active on the local boards of professional organizations, including New York Water Environment Association, Air & Waste Management Association, and
