Candidates announced for May 18 primary

Four candidates have filed petitions for the three vacancies on Bradford City Council for the May 18 primary election, according to the McKean County elections office.

Tuesday was the deadline for filing nomination petitions. Ballot positions will be determined by casting lots at 10 a.m. March 17.

Cameron County has been added to Pennsylvania’s spotted lanternfly quarantine zone.

The county was one of eight added to the list this year, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced Wednesday. This brings the total to 34 Pennsylvania counties in the spotted lanternfly quarantine zone.

A map on the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s website indicates the insect was found in the Driftwood area of Cameron County. It is the only county in this region of the state included in the quarantine area.

According to the department, Pennsylvanians can take steps to prevent the spread of the invasive species by getting rid of any spotted lanternflies or egg masses on their properties, as well as removing Tree-ofheaven host trees.

The approach is simple yet effective. Under the 50-30-20 approach, income is allocated based on this breakdown: • 50 percent of money is spent on needs, including housing costs, health insurance, car payments, and groceries • 30 percent of money is

“They are the only ones that are getting it on a regular basis,” said Kreiner.

“Bradford got 100 doses last week and that’s the most they’ve got since February.”

Elk County officials had no “magic answer” as to why they have been receiving so many doses.

“I was astounded that Bradford had only a total of 500 vaccines, period,” said Elk County Commissioner Matt Quesenberry. “It woke me up to the fact that what I thought was normal isn’t necessarily true in other counties.”

Providers in Elk County include the Keystone Rural Health Consortia, which distributes vaccines out of their clinic in Ridgway, Penn Highlands, which distributes vaccines out of DuBois and Elk Regional Health Center and St. Mary’s Pharmacy, which is a private pharmacy.

Out of all three providers, somehow St. Mary’s Pharmacy was by far the largest provider of vaccines.

St. Mary’s Director of Pharmacy, Molly Beimel, said that the pharmacy signed up to be a provider

last October.

“We found out in December that we would be one of the first to provide vaccines,” said Beimel. “I believe that has to do with us serving long-term facilities.

Long-term care residents were the first to get vaccines and healthcare workers were the highest priorities.”

Beimel explained that the DOH looks at several things when choosing providers of vaccines, such as the efficiency of the provider, positivity rate, death rate and the population aged over 65 years.

The Keystone Rural Health Consortia’s CEO, Kristie Bennardi, said her facility only gets 200 vaccines a week, in addition to enough vaccines to cover second doses.

“We’re doing people from all areas, even McKean County,” she said. “I don’t know how the mass clinics are happening because sometimes we get what we request and sometimes we don’t — we never get extra. We’ve only had one week where we didn’t get anything. I think with the new vaccines coming out, the supply will get better and hopefully all areas get more.”

In Lafayette Township, Republican Michael Angello is the lone candidate for a six-year term as supervisor.

The NKF notes that African Americans’ risk is elevated because African Americans have high rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Research points to a lack of recognition as to the seriousness of kidney disease as one factor that

might be behind African Americans being so vulnerable to kidney disease.

A study published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases found that nearly half of African Americans have at least one risk factor for kidney disease, but less than 3 percent say they feel kidney disease is a “top health concern.” Learning about kidney disease and the vital role kidneys play may compel more people to prioritize kidney health and make lifestyle choices that can reduce their risk for kidney disease.
