a 1991 SHS graduate, and his then-assistant, Chad Bartoszek, a 1999 Salamanca grad, paid Whitcher a visit. “We were talking to him about 'How are we going to stop this offense,' and this and that,” Marsh said, recalling his visit with Whitcher. “George gave us probably an hour after practice one day, and everything he was saying was something that Chad and I had never even thought of and we both looked at each other and said, 'Wow.' He just has so much knowledge. He was just a student of the game, put so much time into it. “He was always prepared, and that was some of the things I remember, how much time he put into preparing for games. His film work was unreal. We never went into a game — at least in my playing days — that George coached that we were unprepared, not once.” Whitcher coached the

that's going to inspire young players, young athletes, young adults to want to replicate that or they want to maybe replicate the game of football and enjoy the time they had. When I look back at my playing years, I think about the dedication, the commitment, but also the fun that we had. Those moments were inspiring not only to want to be around the game of football, but to work with kids in education in general. “So speaking for myself, it's pretty simple that I love the game of football and we had a great mentor and a great run of football years. It was easy to become inspired by my coaches, so I'm assuming that that's played a similar effect in there's a lot of former Salamanca football players who are out there currently coaching.” Of the eight assistants or JV coaches on Salamanca’s staff, six played football at the school, most of them for Whitcher: Paul Furlong, Paul Haley, Aaron Hill, Dustin Ross, Ray Haley and Seth Hostuttler. Only Jerry Parisi (Newfane) and Travis Happoldt (Ellicottville) grew up at other schools. “Seven of the nine are former (Salamanca) players of George, and Aaron Hill was a little younger but he was still around it most of his life and his dad played,” Bartoszek said. “So I think what Salamanca football meant to everyone, the community creates a bond and you want to support what helped you become successful. Everyone's got their own path and reasons for becoming involved in education and athletics, and mine was based off of some of those high school years, for sure.” Bartoszek’s senior year coincided with Whitcher’s final year coaching the Warriors. Long before then, Whitcher had earned a “fierce respect” from his players, Bartoszek said. “He had done so much, and

Now, from his perspective as a seventh-year head coach approaching his first leading the Warriors, Bartoszek marvels at Whitcher’s preparation work. “As a player, I remember looking up to him as such an elevated figure in the football community,” Bartoszek said. “Now as a coach, I’m just amazed at how far ahead of the game he was in terms of his preparation, his practice prep, his execution. He had it going on for so long that we kind of took it for granted. Now that I'm doing it myself, it's like, 'Holy cow.' It's not easy to get a well-oiled machine going. It takes a lot of work and he had it going on. As a coach, I appreciate that.”

The players who lived through the “golden years” are now in charge of keeping the sport alive in the area. “So many great football players came out of that era that they just want to teach it,” Callen said. “They had such a good experience, I think, that they just want to continue and pass that down to another generation. If you don't do that, then it dies.” Passing it down involves teaching a safer version of the game, Callen said. Times have changed since Callen’s playing days, when “you always used to just shake off if you saw stars after a big hit.” “Football overall is dying in this area,” Callen continued. “That's why you see so many merged teams, parents just don't want to send their kids out because they feel it's unsafe, but we're starting to change that perception with USA Football, that the NFL's adopted and passed down, and Head's Up Football. It's got to start at the youth level and go all the way up through to college. We can't keep losing these kids to head injuries, and you've got to start teaching them to shoulder-tackle. The old style of hitting with the crown is bad, it's got to stop.” Callen acknowledged he can’t coach with the same intensity he was coached, but noted that Whitcher knew which buttons to push with his players. “You certainly can't do what we did back in the ’90s,” he said. “That style doesn't fly anymore. But you can still coach the kids hard. Every kid is different, and that's part of a coach's job is to figure out what kids you can push, what kids don't respond to harsh criticism, what kids need to be prodded. It's difficult when you have so many personalities on the team, and George was great at that.”

Ken Stoldt said this year gave Section 6 the perfect amount of schools to split Class B football teams into four divisions for the first time. With 20 'B' schools in the section, there are four divisions of five schools each in Class B this season. The divisions are determined by BEDS numbers, with the largest schools in Class B1 and smallest in B4. "We can actually only do it when we have 20 B schools," Stoldt, the Section 6 football chairman, said of the alignment. "That's what we had this year. We usually have been saddled with 19 or 21 and honestly with 21, we have three divisions of seven so it's somewhat apples

to apples, but when we have 19, it creates a problem and when teams are fighting for those seven and eight playoff spots, one team has an extra division game or one less and we end up going by win-loss percentage and it creates problems." Olean is in the B3 division, facing Springville, Albion, Depew and Lackawanna. Pioneer landed in the biggest division, playing Lake Shore, Cheektowaga, East Aurora/ Holland and Lew-Port in B1. Only the top two finishers in each division make the playoffs in Class B. The division winners will be seeded 1-4 based on league record, followed by the federation tie break system. Similarly, the division runners-up receive seeds 5-8. If two division winners or runners-up have the same league record, their seeding could come down to performance in “crossover” games, which are non-league games against other ‘B’ schools. The games won’t determine who makes the playoffs, but could determine seeding among tied playoff qualifiers. "They have four games in their division, and we put out of the three remaining games, one is just a non-league game that has no bearing on anything," Stoldt said. "But the other two are what we call crossover games and it was done to try and help ease some travel. "For the most part they're close trips against B schools and it does enter into a tiebreak process for seeding in the playoffs. It has no bearing on whether you make the playoffs, but it does have some bearing possibly on seeding." Section 6 ... page 27

QUICK HITS Olean hopes to keep the momentum that it’s gained under Phil Vecchio going. Over the last three years, the Huskies haven’t had a losing season, making two trips to the playoffs. The No. 1 goal for OHS is another postseason appearance. It will rely on an experienced core to lead it there. Olean brings back nine starters, none more valuable than four-year linebacker Nick Fratercangelo — last year’s Section 6 Class B-2 Defensive co-Player of the Year. Senior Cole Anastasia is the likely candidate to replace Alex Weakfall at quarterback. Gavin Kulp will be his top target. Returning four starters on the line should help the Huskies start fast. They begin the year with three straight non-leaguers.

The Huskies won the games that mattered most to ensure a playoff berth. After opening with a 37-6 loss to eventual league champion Albion, Olean went on a three-game league win streak, capped by a thrilling overtime triumph at Medina. Backto-back non-league losses, including a head-scratcher to Class D Salamanca, could’ve spoiled the season, but Olean regrouped to earn a late win at Lackawanna in Week 7. Its season ended with a 42-7 loss to Pioneer in the Section 6 Class B quarterfinals.

Allegany-Limestone will look to bounce back from a last-place finish in WNY Class C South with a new coach: Tom Callen, a three-year assistant who replaces Paul Furlong. The Gators are optimistic about a better 2019. The primary reason? Experience. A-L welcomes back nine starters from last year, including Big 30 all-star receiver Ben Giardini, who tallied 13 touchdowns last year, and second team league all-stars Logan Klice and Connor Walsh. A-L also returns quarterback Thomas Callen, who missed the first four games of last season with a broken wrist. The Gators went 2-2 with Callen under center, with blowout victories over C-LV (42-14) and Royalton-Hartland (42-22).

After advancing to the Section 6 playoffs in threestraight years from 2015-17, A-L took a step back last fall, finishing 1-6 (2-6 with a matchup game victory), its worst regular season record since going 0-7 four years earlier. Despite those sectional appearances, the Gators have gone just 11-22 over the last four campaigns while seeing their regular-season win total dip from four in 2015 to two, two and one. A-L is still in search of its first winning season since 2012.

Now in its eighth year, the Players to Watch story has become a staple in our annual Football Edition, probably even a talking point or source of debate among area football fans. As such, we try to be as informed as possible in our selections. No, our top player picks haven’t always panned out. But we do believe this is a good starting point on who to be aware of in the coming campaign. Here is that list for 2019: FIRST TEAM Stephen Bobby, Sr., RB-DB, Elk County Catholic The star of Elk’s single-wing offense, Bobby ran for 1,331 yards and 20 touchdowns on 212 carries -- an average of 6.3 yards per attempt -- and was the driving force of a Crusaders team that averaged 44 points in its seven wins last year. Behind him and a strong senior class, ECC won its final six regular season games following a 1-2 start and advanced to the District 9 Class A playoffs. A year ago in this space, we took pride in the fact that we’d predicted within one game the correct record for 17 of 22 Big 30 football teams from the previous fall. That was the best we’d done since the current staff fronted by Shawn Campbell, Sam Wilson and yours truly began making those selections in 2012. Naturally, we came crashing back to Earth. Reviewing our selections for 2018, we nailed the records for five teams, just one fewer than the year prior and two off the OTH’s highest mark since 2010. That’s the good news. The bad? We came within one game of

only eight of 22 teams, easily the lowest number in that same stretch. The biggest issue was that in a universally down year for the Big 30, we were too generous. Of the 14 “misses,” we were at least two wins too many for eight teams. But that was probably bound to happen when you consider that half the area (11 of 22 teams) won two or fewer regular-season games last fall, the highest such number since of this millennium. Conversely, we underrated six teams, but none more than Ridgway (which went 9-1) and Smethport (9-0), who far exceeded expectations after being pegged to finish 5-5 and 4-5, respectively. We also shortchanged Salamanca (4-4; 2-6), Randolph (5-2; 3-4) and Elk County Catholic (7-2; 5-4). And although we figured Pioneer would be pretty good with all-Western New York running back Mike Rigerman back for his senior season, we didn’t think the Panthers would run the table in Section 6 Class B-1. STREAKING Entering this season, the longest active regular-season winning streaks belong to Pioneer (11 games) and Smethport (nine). The Panthers, in 2018, posted their first perfect campaign since 2011, and also won their final four games of 2017. The Hubbers were unbeaten in the regular year for the first time since 2001. QUICK HITS After wading through a trying season last year (3-6), Bolivar-Richburg has seemingly reloaded for 2019. The Wolverines return 18 letterwinners and nine starters from last year’s 3-6 team, including third-year starting quarterback Riley Danaher, who set three single-season school passing records last year, and Livingston County all-stars Logan Bess and Hudson Evingham. Additionally, B-R will welcome in Wellsville transfer Tyler Smith, also a Section 5 all-star last year, whom they’ll convert to running back. With experience and a more advantageous federation-style schedule, B-R hopes to more resemble the team that made the Class D semifinals in 2016.

On paper, the Wolverines seemed to have a team capable of challenging for a playoff spot. But a number of player losses due to code of conduct violations left them heavily shorthanded for all but two games, and they struggled to a 1-6 mark in the regular season. B-R rallied down the stretch to win the Connors and Ferris Bowl Class D title, and topped county rival Cuba-Rushford twice on the year, but counting forfeits from the season before, it was technically the Wolverines’ first losing season under Smith.

QUICK HITS Plenty of fresh faces and a revamped offense highlight what will be a rebuilding season for the Owls. Despite losing 24 seniors to graduation, Bradford does return its starting quarterback from the second half of last season (Caleb Nuzzo) as well as running back Derek Sunafrank. Nuzzo will help lead a restructured Bradford offense that includes first-year offensive coordinator. The team will still run its patented wing-t attack that features several backs, but Puglio has also allowed that the team will be putting the ball in the air much more in 2019. After that, it’ll be underclassmen fighting for jobs across the board, including on defense where the Owls return just two starters.

It was a rocky start for Bradford in 2018, as the Owls began the season with a 2-3 mark that included two losses by a combined 14 points. The Owls made a quarterback change mmid-way through the season and then went on a late season surge, winning four straight games to finish with a 6-3 record in District 9 play. C-LV starts the season with lower numbers with 21 players listed on the varsity roster. C-LV should rely on its line early on, with four linemen returning with starting experience. The Red Raiders are calling on an alum who played during the program’s glory days to restore a winning tradition. Ryan Neyman was a two-way lineman for the last Cameron County team to win a District 9 title in 2008, his senior season. That year, the Red Raiders went 12-2 under Tony Defilippi. The last three years, Cameron County has won three games total, going 1-8 in each campaign. Neyman is the program’s third coach in as many years but is familiar with the roster, having spent the last three seasons as an assistant. Of 27 players, 11 are returning starters, including key skill guys such as Nick Peters, Luiz Patricio and Ebon Jackson.

Cameron County’s only season under Jody Bailey was a struggle. In another 1-8 campaign, the Red Raiders scored only 18 points. Their only victory was 6-0 over Sheffield, which went winless. “Last year we were all over the place,” Neyman said. “We started with the wing-T last year, then didn’t really have the horses up front in the trenches to be able to pull like you need to. Then we went back into the pistol and spread offense early on, which we’re building off.”

QUICK HITS The Coudersport Falcons return much of the firepower that brought them a District 9 championship a year ago, including quarterback Hayden Keck. However, gone are perhaps the most important pieces of last season’s potent Coudy offense. Running back Stephen Kelley, who led the Falcons in rushing with 1,782 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2018, graduated. Gone, too, are three of the starting offensive linemen who opened up those running lanes for him — Elijah Ayers, Wyatte Osborne and Preston Cobb. How well 2019 goes for Coudersport will be largely dependent on how well the Falcons can fill those holes and retool, and how quickly they can make it happen.

A regular season full of ups and downs put Coudersport into the playoffs as the 6-seed with a 6-4 record. After rolling to a 4-1 record to start the year, the Falcons ended the regular season losing three of their last four contests. But then, as the postseason began, Coudy regained its footing and caught fire. The Falcons knocked off Redbank Valley, Clarion-Limestone and Smethport — all teams that defeated Coudersport in the regular season — en route to the D9 title. Coudy’s season ended with a tough 48-6 loss to Farrell, who went on to win the state championship in Hershey.

Cuba-Rushford is set to begin anew under former assistant David Wild, who replaces Chris Fee. The question for the Rebels? How long will it take to bounce back from last year’s 2-7 mark? C-R lost the majority of its offensive line, but welcomes back the bulk of its skilled position players, including quarterbacks Alex Tylor and Ethan Rix, who split time last season, and running backs Skylar Coleman and Julius Korytkowski. Wild is hoping to mold what could be an entirely new front five into a group similar to the one that has paved the way for a handful of star running backs in recent years. After advancing to the Section 5 playoffs in four of Fee’s first five seasons and averaging five wins a year in that stretch, C-R struggled in his final campaign, going 2-7, with six losses of 20 points or more, including two to county rival Bolivar-Richburg. The Rebels beat only Pemboke last year — once in the regular season and again in the Connors and Ferris Bowl Class D semis. It amounted to their first losing season since 2012. C-R is still in search of its first playoff win since 2010.

The Crusaders will have to do a lot with a little in 2019, as veteran head coach Tony Gerg has a roster with just 19 players to work with. Among them, however, is running back Stephen Bobby, who is coming off a 1,000-yard season in the backfield and can plug a big hole in the middle of the defense, as well. Gerg said the most important part of the season will be conditioning and keeping the team healthy with such low numbers, though the team does return starting quarterback Mason McAllister to the fold. On defense, the Crusaders return five starters in their 3-5-3 unit: two in the backfield, two along the line and one in the linebacking corps.

After a 1-2 start, the Crusaders rolled to six consecutive victories that earned them a trip into the D9 Class A postseason. Three of those wins included lopsided scores of 60-0, 42-6 and 65-0 as well as an upset win over Clarion-Limestone. In that first round playoff game, however, the Crusaders lost to Curwensville 26-0. Gerg said that loss to the Golden Tide is still fresh on his mind, as he calls the two schools “the best football rivalry in District 9.” ECC beat Curwensville earlier in the year, and opens the 2019 campaign with a chance to exact revenge against the Golden Tide.

High expectations for Saxons team with mix of talent and experience By JEFF UVEINO Olean Times Herald

ALFRED — To many college football teams, 7-4 is a solid record to end the season. But at Alfred University, expectations are simply higher. The Saxons finished with that record a year ago, ending its season with a victory over Salisbury University in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Bushnell Bowl. But with a 2019 roster filled with a mix of experience and young talent, coach Bob Rankl is ready for his team to take a step forward. "We have pretty high expectations in this football program so 7-4 isn't really where we want to be," Rankl said. "We're returning a lot of starters and mixing that with a talented

recruiting class, so our expectations are as high as ever." The Saxons return seven starters on each side of the ball. Offensively, Rankl said an experienced group of linemen will lead the way. "The heart of our offense is our line," he said. "They're all returning from last year. We think if we combine that with some explosive playmakers, our offense will be successful." Junior center Wes Senn, who hails from Randolph, will be a leader in the group. At quarterback, the Saxons have two seniors battling for the starting spot, which Rankl said is a good problem. Ben Burk, a Lakewood native and the primary starter for AU last year, was 120-of-239 for 1,586 yards passing. He also threw 12 touchdown passes with nine

interceptions. Casey Boston, who appeared in eight games last season is also vying for the starting spot. On defense, Rankl has a group of returners that he hopes can pick up where linebacker Cole Reed left off when he graduated in the spring. Reed had 130 tackles last season, tied for sixth-most in a single season in AU history. Junior safety Raeqwon Greer was named a preseason All-America by D3football.com. He was AllConference First Team in the Empire 8 a year ago, and had 56 total tackles. Senior linebacker Nick Milgate will help hold down the center of the Saxon defense, while senior defensive end Leo Pamphile will anchor the defensive line. Both are co-captains of the team, as is Senn. Alfred will have four non-conference matchups before beginning Empire 8 play, including a Sept. 21 trip to Ithaca College. Rankl said this year's schedule is as competitive as the team has had. "We're taking it one game

at a time, there's no way we can look ahead of anyone," he said. "The truth is, any loss can affect your ability to win the conference and make the NCAA playoffs." The Saxons will open their

season at Thiel College on Sept. 7. "We're focused on team discipline," Rankl said. "When we combine that with great work and effort, good things will happen."

Section 5 makes switch to federation-style schedule for ‘19 By J.P. BUTLER Olean Times Herald

BOLIVAR -- The Section 5 football committee and coaches agreed that it was time for a change. For years, the section was subject to a myriad of lopsided scores and uncompetitive matchups as the result of having leagues, existing mostly geographically, that included schools of different class sizes. Wellsville, a Class C school, had long been given the daunting task of facing Class B powerhouses such as Bath, Livonia and Hornell in mighty Livingston County Division I. Just last year, Class D Bolivar-Richburg had to play Class C Bishop Kearney/ Rochester Prep (a 26-6 loss), though that game was the result of a late open date on B-R’s schedule. Play in the smaller classes was almost never completely balanced. And so, they addressed it. The football committee made the switch to a section-wide federation-style schedule, in which teams are grouped strictly by class size -- the same format Section 6 has used for years -for the 2019 season. The motion passed by a vote of 53-19 in a December meeting, with 72 programs responding. B-R boss Steve Smith, a Section 5 committee member, was among the many coaches in favor of the switch. He headed up the group that created the new alignment teams will use this fall. “The leagues were good for four, five games, and then you’re stuck with two games where, as far as the D schools were concerned, you’re playing a C school and it just wasn’t competitive,” he said. “What’s the advantage for us to go play Bishop Kearney? We appreciated the game … but what are we supposed to do? “This alignment works. I think that people are going to like it. What’s not to like?”

HOW WILL this affect the three Section 5 Big 30 programs? The 12 Class D teams were broken up into two six-team divisions, North and South. CubaRushford and Bolivar-Richburg are part of the South Division, along with South Seneca/ Romulus, Geneseo, CanisteoGreenwood and Perry/Mount Morris. Each team will play five league contests and two crossovers against North opponents as part of its seven-game schedule. Due to how spread out the Class D teams are, there was no perfect way to divide the two divisions geographically, Smith said. The idea is that the benefits of playing like-sized schools will outweigh the drawbacks. “We were the only class that ran into (these issues) due to geography,” Smith noted. “The first year, we’re giving it a shot; if it doesn’t work the way we intend it, we’ll revisit it in the offseason. “What Section 6 has done over the years, that’s what we’re doing, so you don’t get some of those uncompetitive crossovers. And some of the rivalries that people worried about … they’re still there. Le Roy and Cal-Mum are still there.” THE 14 Class C teams, meanwhile, were broken up into a C-1 and C-2 division based on bed size. Wellsville, after continually having to take on arguably the most difficult schedule in the Big 30, is part of the C-2 alignment,

along with Le Roy, CaledoniaMumford/Byron-Bergen, Dansville, Wayland-Cohocton, Avon and Letworth/Warsaw. That means the Lions won’t have to face a murderer’s row of Class B teams in their quest to reach the sectional playoffs. “The nice part about that is that when you seed eight teams to go into Class C, you guys have

competed against one another in order to get to that point,” Wellsville coach Frank Brown said. “It wasn’t like you had to go against a B school or play down. You’re in a division where you’re playing schools your size. “That kind of evens up the playing field. If they stay with this, it’s going to be a lot easier to recruit than when we were in

High school football classifications to change for 2020 and 2021 seasons By NOLAN WEIDNER

SYRACUSE — There will be more high schools playing Class D football in New York in the fall of 2020 after the state athletic association approved new classification numbers July 30. The Central Committee of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association gave the new cut-off numbers the okay during its annual meeting at the Turning Stone Casino and Resort in Verona. The move will balance the five classes and offer some protection for the smallest — Class D — in the 11-man game as more schools in Class C and D turn to eight-man football. “We don’t want to lose Class D football,” said Section III football co-chairman Keith Kempney, who was involved in formulating the proposed changes. “We tried to come up with numbers that each section felt comfortable with.” THE CURRENT cut-off enrollments, number of schools, and percentage of total are as follows: — Class AA: 1025 and above - 70 schools (18.28 percent) — Class A: 585-1024 - 91 schools (23.76 percent) — Class B: 355-584 - 98 schools (25.95 percent) — Class C: 230-354 - 81 schools (21.15 percent) — Class D: 229 and below 43 schools (11.23 percent) THE NEW numbers are: — Class AA: 1025 and up 70 schools (18.28 percent) — Class A: 630-1024 - 86 schools (22.45 percent) — Class B: 397-629 - 87 schools (22.72 percent) — Class C: 261-396 - 80 Classifications ... page 33

Linn, Alfred State football building a new culture By JEFF UVEINO Olean Times Herald

ALFRED — In his second year as head coach of the Alfred State football team, Scott Linn and his staff are hoping to build the program’s culture. The Pioneers finished 1-9 a year ago, behind a completely new coaching staff. However, Linn is optimistic about what his players can do in Year 2. “The nice thing is that we had very little turnover in our coaching staff,” Linn said. “Consistency is something that’s important, and I was fortunate to be able to hire a lot of people that I had coached with before.” The Pioneers’ incoming freshman class is also the first that was recruited by this staff. “We’re excited about the freshmen we have,” Linn said. “Our guys have been working hard, and you can expect to see some big contributions from

(them).” Aside from the new faces, returning players will be important in building the hard-working culture Linn and company want to solidify within the program. Buying in, he said, will be an important part of taking a step forward. “With a lot of new guys, that culture is something we’re still trying to create. We want to be the hardest working team in our conference, and want to beat teams by outworking them,” he said. Several important pieces to last year’s team return on the defensive side of the ball, including senior safety Mike Zimmerman. “He gets us lined up and makes sure we’re in the right checks,” Linn noted. Zimmerman, a tech management major from Canandaigua, led the Pioneers with 75 tackles and three interceptions a season ago. He was named first-team All-Eastern Collegiate Football

Conference (ECFC) in 2018. Also on the defensive line, junior Jamel Guzman and sophomore Brock Weist will play key roles. Weist collected 40 tackles a season ago, while Guzman had 17. On offense, starting quarterback Dashown Wilson returns after being injured late last season. The senior criminal justice major was 81-of-177 for 1217 yards passing in eight games a year ago. He threw nine touchdown passes and 15 interceptions. Sophomore running back Ronnie Clark is coming off a season where he rushed for over 700 yards and was named second-team all-conference. Linn said that the team has a lot of competition at tailback this season, but Clark has been doing a great job in practice. Seniors Devon Clark and Sam VanVankenburg will anchor the offensive line. Alfred State will have several tough non-conference games before ECFC play, includ-

ing trips to the University of Rochester and SUNY Brockport on Sept. 21 and 28, respectfully. While Linn is hopeful the team can grow during non-conference play and be ready for what he said are “the most important games of the year” in ECFC play, he’s cur-

rently focused on taking the season one day at a time. “We just want to have the best practices we can,” he said. “If guys will buy into our culture, everything else will fall into place.” Alfred State begins its season at UMass-Dartmouth on Sept. 7.

Gone are Franklinville/ Ellicottville and Randolph, back to Class D, while Fredonia drops down from Class B to C. As in past years, the top four teams from both Class C divisions (North and South) make the playoffs, with the top team in the North playing the fourth team from the south, the second team from the south playing the third team from the north, etc. The fifth and sixth seeds from the two divisions comprise the four-team Chuck Funke Memorial Classic Class C bracket. — All five teams from Class D — Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Franklinville/Ellicottville, Salamanca, Randolph and Clymer/Sherman/Panama — will make the playoffs with the top three seeds receiving a bye to the semifinals. An originally planned sixth ‘D’ school, Maple Grove, dropped out during the first official week of practice and will instead play eight-man football, joining Frewsburg as the section’s first schools to return to that form of the game. The late change leaves the other D schools with an empty week in the schedule as of Thursday, Aug. 22, but Stoldt said he was in communication with Section 5 about replacement games for those teams. — Once again, the Section 6 playoffs conclude with championships at the home of the Buffalo

The following week, Section 6’s winners visit SUNY Brockport to play Section 5 champions in the Far West Regional. — As with the rest of New York state, Section 6 has adopted a new national federation rule for a 40-second play clock. This increase from 25 seconds will be in effect for all plays except for after timeouts, changes in possession or after scoring plays. “During any kind of drive, it's for the most part going to be a 40-second clock,” Stoldt said. "(It's) is going to be an adjustment for everybody, for coaches, officials, players. That's going to take a couple weeks, I'm sure, to get used to." After a pair of standout seasons in which it won two AML North Division titles and reached the District 9 playoffs in both instances, O-E mostly maintained that momentum in Year 1 under Troy Cook, going 5-5 in the regular year while making a third-straight trip to the postseason. The Terrors faltered halfway, dropping four straight — three in blowout fashion — after a 3-1 start, but won two of three down the stretch to secure a third-straight campaign with at least five triumphs.

After reaching the playoffs for a thirdstraight season in 2018, Otto-Eldred will look to take the next step this fall: winning a postseason contest for the first time in modern program history. Though the Terrors welcome back just nine letterwinners, six of those were regular starters, including quarterback Cole Sebastian, who led District 9 in passing yards (1,957), touchdowns (21) and completion percentage (58.9) as a sophomore, plus league all-star receiver Cameron Magee and stalwart linemen Zaz Bell and Brett Kreamer. O-E is hoping that an influx of reinforcements, a new offensive coordinator in Nate Zitnik and a winning culture can help put it to further success in 2019.

To replace the 2,116 yards and 29 TDs on the ground by Big 30 Player of the Year and Connolly Cup winner Mike Rigerman, Pioneer is counting on a balanced attack. Coach Jim Duprey loves his backfield of Tyler Ely, Tra’e Hill and Josh Oun. The only first-team all-league selection returning for the Panthers is their kicker, Karson Hurlburt. But the cupboard is far from bare. Pioneer has 30 letterwinners back who are hungry for more success. The Panthers return two starters up front in Andrew Payne and Aaron Doyle and will still have a mammoth line. Tight end Denton Tilly, at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, is essentially another lineman. It’s a new year, but there’s still plenty to like about the Panthers.

In its first undefeated regular season since 2011, Pioneer outscored opponents by an average of 41-11. Moreover, it knocked off perennial powers Maryvale and Cheektowaga in back-to-back weeks. Dominant playoff wins over Olean (42-7) and Fredonia/Brocton (28-0) sent the Panthers to New Era Field for the first time since 2001. But while there, they couldn’t master Cheektowaga again, falling short of the title, 14-7.

either because they were hesitant to let go of the old league alignments or had concerns over travel. Smith, though, views it as everyone — at least in terms of the Class D teams — being in the same boat. “You can say that you’re a Livingston County team, but you’re not,” Smith said matter-of-factly. “(One team) chimed in early and said, ‘there’s no way we want to travel to wherever,’ and I said, ‘we’re as far away from everybody as you are; look at a map. So if we’re willing to travel, you need to be willing to.

“So we did what we could.” He added of the two crossover games teams will play: “The agreement was, let’s say Lyons travels here (in 2019). Then, next year, we’re still in this alignment, we’d go there. I don’t have a problem with that. Fair is fair.”

Justin Bienkowski is back in charge at Port Allegany after a two-year hiatus, although he served as an assistant last fall. For the Gators, there’s reason for optimism after some trying seasons. With 14 returning letterwinners, nine returning starters and 35 players total, Port has its most experience and depth in a handful of years. The future also looks bright with an 11-player freshman class that went undefeated at the junior high level. Bienkowski is counting on a big year in the backfield by Josh Rees. Trey Ayers is also back at quarterback and has four linemen returning to protect him.

The Gators posted their second straight 2-7 season under Pat Warnick, the Smethport police chief who decided to leave coaching this past winter due to family and job obligations. A young squad took its lumps. Port Allegany had only four seniors, one of whom, star Jared Mahon, suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3. The Gators’ only wins came against Sheffield and Cameron County. Their losses were by an average of 43 points, including four shutouts.

From 2011-’17, we nailed our “hot seat” selection -- a team we think will run the regular season table -- on four of six occasions, including our last choice: a loaded Kane team in 2017. A year ago, for just the second time in recent memory, we chose not to put that onus on one of the local programs. Naturally, in that same year, not one but two teams -- Smethport (9-0) and Pioneer (7-0) -- go unbeaten en route to a District 9 Class A title game and Section 6 Class B semifinals appearance, respectively. And that leads us to our prognostications for 2019. For the second-straight year, and just the third time in recent memory, we chose to go without a “hot seat” selection. The explanation for that is the same as it was last year: We think a handful of Big 30 teams could be at, or near, the top of their league standings, most notably Ridgway (District 9 Large School), Coudersport (D-9 Small School), Pioneer, Olean (Section 6 Class B-2) and Franklinville/Ellicottville. None, however, should be expected to go unblemished given the caliber of some of their opponents. (Ridgway, for instance, will meet what figures to be a loaded Clarion team now merged with Clarion-Limestone; Pioneer and Olean will likely have to get past Cheektowaga and Albion, respectively, to fin-

AUGUST 2019 ish first in the B leagues). From top to bottom, we think the Big 30 will be much-improved this season (it would be difficult to fathom doing worse than the area-wide .328 winning percentage from last year, excluding the two unbeaten teams). Portville returns a whopping 26 letterwinners from a team that went 3-6, but won two of its last three games. AlleganyLimestone and BolivarRichburg will almost certainly be better than the teams that won just one game last fall. It would be difficult to imagine Kane, typically one of the area’s premier programs, to go 2-7 again. Then, too, some of the dynamics that might have left local teams at a disadvantage have changed. Cuba-Rushford, Wellsville and B-R should greatly benefit from playing a federation-style schedule that no longer has them taking on opponents from outside their classes. Our Pennsylvania teams are entering year two of the district’s large and small school alignments. Ostensibly, Salamanca’s schedule isn’t quite as unforgiving as it was a year ago. With that mind, we’re confident that our predictions will be at least slightly more accurate than they were in 2018, when we seemingly whiffed on all but a handful of area programs. Famous last words: Here’s how we see the Big 30 faring this season, with overall records in parentheses.

Randolph starts the season with the youngest and most inexperienced team of Brent Brown’s career, but the Cardinals’ coach liked the young talent making its way up to the varsity roster this season. The Cardinals will be without the help of their neighbors from Frewsburg after merging for two years, as the Bears switched to fielding their own eight-man football team, the first school in Section 6 to do so. Quarterback Tyler Hind, running backs Alex Finch and Isaac Hind and tight end Josh Brown are the Cardinals’ only returning starters, as Randolph will look to rebuild its lines after losing all five lineman starters. Brown hopes the Cardinals avoid “deer in the headlights” moments and improve throughout the season.

The Cardinals rattled off four straight victories in the middle of the season before being upset by Portville 28-26 in the regular season finale. QUICK HITS The formula for success is a fairly simple one, as far as Ridgway is concerned. When opponents can’t score, they can’t win the game. Defense is always at a premium for the Elkers, and don’t expect 2019 to be any different. Ridgway returns six seniors to its defensive ranks this season, including leading tackler Robert Briggs -- one of three Elker linebackers returning from 2018. Two starters return along the defensive front, but Ridgway’s secondary brings back just one starter from last season, safety Jake Wickett. Starting quarterback Paul Gresco is back, and so are most of his weapons.

It’s hard to imagine a season going much better for Ridgway than the 2018 campaign did. The Elkers steamrolled their way through the District 9 Large School Division to the tune of a 9-1 regular season record and Division championship. The lone hiccup was a 28-11 defeat to Brookville. The Class 2A District playoffs went much the same for the Elkers. Ridgway posted wins over Moniteau and Brockway to capture the D9 crown and earn a berth in the PIAA state playoffs.

The Warriors defeated neighboring Cattaraugus-Little Valley twice, 26-20 and 14-6, and claimed two impressive upsets to end the season. The Warriors won three of their last four regular season games, including a 24-12 win over Olean and a 23-21 win over Maple Grove on a last-second field goal. Maple Grove got revenge in the playoffs, however, defeating the Warriors 38-7 in the Class D semifinals.

CAMERON MAGEE, SR., WR-DB, OTTO-ELDRED A broken leg suffered in the first quarter of the Terrors’ sixth game ended his season early, but Magee still managed to catch 29 passes for 311 yards and six TDs as one of the top targets in O-E’s high-powered, pass-heavy offense. Despite playing just half the year, Magee still made the inaugural District 9 Small School North All-Star team as one of three receivers (three of whom came from Otto-Eldred). The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder also ran for two touchdowns and scored on a kickoff and interception return while posting 31 tackles, including three for lost yardage. JAKE WICKETT, SR., RB-LB, RIDGWAY In a balanced rushing attack with four key ball-carriers, Wickett piled up 534 yards and nine touchdowns on 109 attempts, an average of 4.9 yards per carry, for a Ridgway team that went 11-2 and won the D-9 Class AA championship last year. One of the top two-way players in the area, Wickett made the Big 30 All-Star team as a running back (he also had two receiving TDs) and the District 9 Large School All-Star unit as a safety after totaling 49 tackles and an interception, plus a punt return touchdown.

QUICK HITS Sheffield heads into the 2019 season looking for its first victory in over two years. Second-year head coach Chris Korbar is optimistic about the upcoming season mainly because of summer turnout. The Wolverines — through a co-op with Abraxas Youth & Family Services — had nearly 35 kids show up for summer camp, including offensive specialist Walker Kyler and linemen Brennin Lester and Jake Davidson. Korbar isn’t sure what he’ll get from the Abraxas kids once the season begins, but he’s confident that the talent level has improved dramatically from a season ago. “(The key is) just guys knowing their role and being in position,” Korbar said. “We plan on being a bit more aggressive.”

St. Marys brought out 64 kids to summer workouts, including 11 running backs and 23 wide receivers. Leading all of that offensive talent is offensive coordinator Frank Varischetti, one of the sharpest minds in Big 30. Defensively, the team is just as deep with 23 members in the secondary as well as a group of 10 linebackers that includes eight returners from a season ago. “I don’t care about last year, and I don’t care who started and all that stuff,” Dworek said. “To prove a point, the kids that work hardest are going to play.”

Simply put, the Dutch were out of their league a season ago. St. Marys lost all of its games but one (a 24-21 loss to Punxsutawney) by at least two touchdowns, and scored just nine points over the first three games of the season. Offense remained a trouble spot in Elk County the remainder of the year, as the Dutch were shut out twice more. The struggles on offense carried over to the other side of the ball as well, as St. Marys allowed 35 points or more in five games, including 158 in a three-week stretch.

Wellsville

Wellsville is on its third coach in three years, but that might not be a bad thing. The new coach is former boss Frank Brown. Brown led the Lions to 23 wins over five seasons from 2008-12, including a pair of playoff appearances and the school’s only sectional football title in 2011. His goal now is turn around a Wellsville team that has won just five games over the last five years and reached the playoffs only once (2013) since his departure. Brown has some talent with which to work. He returns 12 letterwinners, including big linemen Seth Bowen, Eagan Enke and Mekha Dorrough and skilled players Blake Beckwith and Hunter Brandes.

It was more of the same for the Lions in 2018. Wellsville once again struggled against the fierce competition of Livingston County/ Genesee Region Div. II, going 1-7 and losing by an average of 30 points per game. That gave them a record of just 5-35 over the last five seasons. Where to tune in to hear Big 30 football this fall By CHUCK POLLOCK Olean Times Herald

This coming season, four of the Big 30’s 22 football schools will have their entire schedules broadcast. Two other area stations will have full broadcast schedules, but with multiple teams, and a pair of others will carry only the home games of the teams in their towns. Bradford High will have its entire slate broadcast on two stations (Bradford’s 1490 AM and 100.1 FM). Meanwhile, Cameron County High School (Emporium’s 1250 AM), St. Marys’ Elk County Catholic (Emporium’s 98.9 FM) and St. Marys Public (St. Marys’ 93.9 FM) will also have their full schedules broadcast. Olean’s WHDL (1450 AM and 107.1 FM) will carry five Olean High games, plus Portville at Allegany-Limestone while Ridgway’s WDDH (97.5 FM) will have selected Ridgway, Elk County Catholic,

Kane and Sheffield games. Wellsville’s 790 AM will broadcast that school’s home games, as will Salamanca’s 105.9 FM. The 2019 Big 30-area high school football broadcast schedule: Friday, Aug. 23
