New Birch owner seeks to keep experience steady

ALLEGANY — One of the area’s most stable and reliable golf clubs welcomed a new owner this year. But members and public players should have no reasons for concern, only grounds for optimism.

Last month, longtime owners Danny and Greg Kaye sold Birch Run Golf Club to long-time member and former CEO and President of Olean Wholesale Grocery Cooperative Bob Ketchner, who becomes the fourth owner in club history.

Established in 1954 by Jim Stravino, a graduate of St. Bonaventure University and the former PGA club professional, the club consists of a nine-hole course measured out at par 35 and a clubhouse restaurant and bar.

Birch Run has seen a steady membership stream of just north of 125 persons renewing their association annually, and despite the new ownership, Ketchner does not plan to make any changes to upset the quality of the course or clubhouse, only improve upon the history built.

“Even though there’s a change of ownership, there should not be any expectation and change of the quality of play that they’ve received over the last several years here under the Kayes’ ownership,” Ketchner said.

A CLUB member for more than 30 years, Ketchner became aware of the course’s potential market status in July 2020 while playing a round of golf with co-owners and former PGA golf professionals Greg and Danny Kaye.

Ketchner got to know Danny as a friend during the latter’s time as the club professional at Bartlett Country Club.

And over the past eight months, their relationship became a working friendship as the pair met several times at the end of 2021 before the Kayes eventually agreed to sell him the club in January.

“It was a very painless process,” Ketchner said. “We sat down as businesspeople and friends, and I have a strong financial background, so I was able to review the business from a financial perspective to make sure that numbers made sense to me, and we put together a business plan.”

A GRADUATE of SUNY Fredonia with a Bachelor of Science (BS), Business Administration, Concentration in Financial Management and Minor in Economics, Ketchner has no experience working at a golf course but a long history in the corporate grocery industry.

Ketchner does not have many plans for the club’s golf course, but with a background in business, he does intend to make alterations to the restaurant and bar’s business model.

“I think that Dan and Greg have done a very good job with building what they have here,” Ketchner said. “I don’t plan on making any drastic changes to the golf side of the business … but I have familiarity from owning a bar and pizza shop, so I’m looking at the opportunity of possibly growing that end of the business.”

Birch Run’s clubhouse restaurant and bar offer a variety of high-quality food and drink according to Ketchner.

However, having worked more than 22 years at C&S Wholesale Grocers and Olean Wholesale Grocery Cooperative from 1998 to 2020, Ketchner believes he

can improve the restaurant’s consistency.

“Dan and Greg, their focus was on the golf side of the business, where that was their forte,” Ketchner said. “I think I have a little more to offer on the restaurant and bar side of the business. So, I just want to be able to offer food and a restaurant that is quality consistently to the customers.”

IN TERMS of events, Ketchner plans to keep the club’s focus on its members. In late April, the club will host a co-ed baby shower in which the women will conduct their activities inside of the clubhouse and the men will be out golfing. However, no other events have been scheduled despite approaches from local businesses.

“I’ve been approached so far in the early stages from different groups looking at possible tournaments, but I don’t want to overrun the course with tournaments and upset the membership,” Ketchner said. “We have a solid membership base here and they’re the backbone of this course.”

Course superintendent Grayson Cole oversaw the ground crew and course under Danny and Greg Kaye and will continue to provide the same service during and after the transition of ownership.

“Grayson is staying in his past and present capacity, which is very good,” Ketchner said. “He has done an awfully good job with this course over the last

BEGINNING in early April, the weather has allowed the greens and fairways to be mowed daily, providing balanced greens in terms of speed and value.

“I communicate and talk to all the players. I mean, every time somebody comes in after playing, I ask them how they played, how’s the course and I’m getting all positive feedback,” Ketchner said. “Cole has been able to, weather permitting, mow the greens and keep them in good shape, which the players, the membership and the general public appreciate.”

Despite rising gas prices and local inflation, membership prices remain the same this year, $840 for families, $620 for singles and $250 for juniors or students. Guest play is also available for $13 walking and $20 with a cart. The hours are flexible depending on members’ schedules but primarily run with the first player going out around 8 a.m. and the last players teeing off around 6 p.m.

But despite new ownership taking the reins weeks before Birch Run’s prime golf season, members and public players alike should not expect any alterations to the golf experience and only improvements to their dining and clubhouse comfort.

“Despite everything that’s happening with the cost of everything, I have not increased any prices,” Ketchner said.

“So, I just want the public to understand that just because there’s a change of ownership, they shouldn’t expect any decline in the quality of the experience that they’ve had in the past. And we look to build on what the Kayes and past ownerships have built here and we look to grow on that.”

A look back at Blocher’s record-setting performance

OLEAN — That Southwestern New York-Northwestern Pennsylvania Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament record that would never be broken?

It was last August.

When the legendary Ted Kochan won the event nine times in the 11 years between 1960 and ’70, the assumption was that number would never be duplicated, and certainly not in that narrow time span.

But while it took Chris Blocher 25 years to do it, in last year’s event, the Hinsdale Central School physical education teacher and basketball coach won the area’s top match-play tournament for the 10th time.

And, at age 46, the former St. Bonaventure star doesn’t appear to be losing his skills. Kochan, during his illustrious run, did it though the heart of his prime, from his 25th through 35th birthdays.

Men’s Amateur is slated for Aug. 3-7 at Bartlett CC Blocher has won seven of those titles since he was 34.

HIS RECORD-breaking championship came via a 5-and-4 victory over talented 27-year-old John Nick Forrest at Bartlett Country Club.

He added 2021 to his titles in 1997, ‘99, 2007, ‘10-’13, ‘17 and ‘19 and did so in spectacular fashion, never once trailing, even for a single hole, against his five tournament opponents.

In the 36-hole championship match, Blocher shot 4-under-par 66 in the morning, despite a double bogey, which was a frustration to Forrest, who posted the same score, and was one down.

Over the 32 holes, Blocher finished 4-under and logged 10 birdies.

Forrest, whose father John won three Men’s Amateurs (1986-87 and 2002), shot even par for the day and had seven birdies.

Indeed, nine of the 15 holes that were won, by either of them, came via birdie.

To put Blocher’s accomplishment into perspective, after his 10 and Kochan’s nine, the only other golfers with at least three Men’s Amateur titles, in its 85-year history, were Larry Dana (four) and John Forrest and Armand Burke (three each).

Last year, the Men’s Amateur also offered a new option.

An over-60 consolation flight will continue for players that age who lost their opening-round match in any flight but the Championship (which has its own consolation). The top eight players, based on their qualifying-round score, will be re-bracketed in the new flight and compete in match play through Sunday’s final.

In addition, once again this year, Tournament Director Kyle Henzel will offer an over-65 Flight if at least eight entrants sign up. The flight will be a tourney within a tourney with its own separate medalist and title.

ENTRY FEE is $130 and includes a dinner on Wednesday afternoon after the medal qualifier and all participants are guaranteed two rounds — one medal qualifier and one match-play. Practice rounds can be played for $20.

In addition, for the 24th time and 23rd consecutive year, the tourney will

host the Shootout of Previous Champions, a 7-hole event using a steeplechase format, on Tuesday evening. Last year, it was won by 2001 champion Josh Anderson.

Also for 23 years in a row the Men’s Amateur will donate to its two not-forprofit benefactors: The Rehabilitation Center Foundation and HomeCare & Hospice. Last year, each received $9,000 bringing the tourney’s total donation to $384,000.

The tourney also funds the entry fee for 10 players from the Penn-York Junior Golf League who qualify plus the John Henzel Memorial Scholarship which goes to a golfer or golfers from a Big 30 school. To date, just under $14,000 has been donated to a freshman-to-be by the Henzel Scholarship.

Last year’s winners were Olean High’s Marina Heister and Allegany-Limestone’s Michael Davis.

How Randy John became one of Elkdale’s most avid golfers

SALAMANCA — Last year, Randy John played 226 rounds of golf at his home course, and walked every single one of them.

To put that in perspective, Jack Widger, the club professional at Elkdale

Country Club, said normally members there play 25 to 50 rounds a year, whereas some of the most avid golfers are in the 100s. Widger himself only works 33 weeks: 231 days. Essentially, John plays every day that the weather allows him to, even wearing winter gear or a rain suit in some of the more extreme conditions when the course is still open.

But only a few years ago, John’s

health wouldn’t allow him on the course.

Now, he doesn’t take the sport for granted and values it as an exercise activity.

A 32-year member at the country club, John’s health troubles began at the age of 50 when he suffered a stroke. He was also an avid biker, fisherman and tennis player at the time.

He recovered from the stroke and resumed recreational golf in the spring of 2009 for a steady six years. But by 2015 heart troubles saw his ejection refraction rate dropped to 18%, whereas normal levels are 52-72%, he said.

His doctor, a cardiologist from Strong Memorial in Rochester, recommended one of two choices, admission to the heart transplant waiting ward or surgery for a Left Ventricular Assistance Device (LVAD). John opted for the latter, undergoing open heart surgery to attach a small pump to his left ventricle to run the heart. This required a fivepound battery at all times.

John’s golfing days were through, for a period of three years.

In that time he took up writing under a new venture at his RAJ Publications. A former professor at St. Bonaventure, John started penning books on Seneca history. John’s books can be found on lulu.com under the name Randy A. John.

John said he wasn’t in a position to worry about the sport he missed at that time.

“Golf was a non-issue,” he said.

“Obviously I missed golf but it really had no bearing at that stage.

“Golf became a reminder of how short life can be … It becomes a measure of where you are on your life course.”

After two years as an LVAD patient, John contracted a staph infection. He went on the transplant list and after six months, he underwent a heart transplant on Jan. 8, 2018.

Once he recovered from the transplant, John was able to take up his golf clubs again.

John played more than 140 rounds by the end of the year in 2019, now able to walk the course again after being limited to riding in a golf cart since his stroke.

He upped his golf participation in 2020 to playing 206 consecutive rounds, either nine holes or more: the second highest number of rounds in New York State, he said.

John plays with a group of fellow members, a core of 10-15 devoted summer golfers, many of them retirees.

“Golf is probably many things for many people but for me, golf is exercise first,” he said.

John estimated he walks 98% of the time he plays at Elkdale. He also gets exercise from riding his e-bike in the summer, a four-mile trip to the course.

In 2021, he increased his total again to 226 rounds, one of them including his fourth hole-in-one.

Spieth crossing $50M a reminder of Tiger’s standard

Not even inflation can diminish the dominance of Tiger Woods.

The latest reminder came at Hilton Head when Jordan Spieth overcame an 18-inch miss on Saturday and a threeshot deficit on Sunday to beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff for his 13th career PGA Tour victory.

Along with a tartan jacket (he looks better in green) and a spot in the winners-only field at Kapalua next January (a big perk to him), Spieth earned $1,440,000. That made him the 11th player in PGA Tour history to cross the $50 million mark in career earnings.

Officially, he is the youngest player at 28 years and 9 months to reach $50 million.

That’s where inflation comes in.

Woods is the only other player to reach $50 million in career tour earnings before turning 30. He was 29 and 6 months when he was runner-up at the Western Open in 2005, pushing him over a milestone that he quickly left in the rearview mirror.

Woods needed only seven more years to cross $100 million, and now he is at $120,895,206.

Total prize money when Woods turned pro in the summer of 1996 was $65.95 million. Spieth turned pro in 2013 — like Woods, without a tour card — and the total prize fund was $260 million.

While both reached $50 million in roughly nine years, Woods did it in 41 fewer tournaments (177 compared with 218 for Spieth). The average total prize money for Woods during that stretch was $173.8 million. For Spieth, it was $322.56 million.

Rory McIlroy is a better comparison. He turned pro nearly six years before Spieth and has kept a global schedule with membership on two tours.

McIlroy needed only 173 events on the PGA Tour to reach $50 million at Bay Hill in 2020, about six weeks before he turned 31.

Scores are coming down and prize money is going up. Such is the evolution of sport. The best measure will always be victories.

Woods has 82 on the PGA Tour alone — 11 more on tours in Asia, Australia, Japan and Europe — and 15 majors. Those are the numbers that define him. When he passed $50 million, Woods already had 43 tour victories.

entirely to Woods. He was asked at Riviera a few months ago if he knew how much was in his deferred compensation package.

“Nope. Uh-uh,” he said.

Does he want to know?

“Uh-uh,” he said.

Still, this can be added to his long list of feats that might never be matched, right up there with 142 consecutive cuts and needing only seven starts to qualify for the Tour Championship.

Woods has been atop the PGA Tour career money list for 22 years.

It used to be a contest. Greg Norman took the lead over Tom Kite in August 1995 by winning the World Series of Golf at Firestone, and he kept it until the last week in January 2000 when Davis Love III moved past him after the Phoenix Open.

Love stayed on top all of two weeks until Woods was runner-up at Torrey Pines and took over. It took 73 tournaments from his “Hello, world” introduction to Woods leading the career money list, and the gap has only widened.

Spieth is not ready to declare himself all the way back — “close but far” is what he said after he won the RBC Heritage. He has two wins in just over a year, but also seven finishes out of the top 25 since winning the Texas Open last year and three missed cuts this year.

He will always be compared with how he started his career.

It was at the Valspar Championship in 2015 when Spieth, then 21 and in his third year, played a practice round with three others born the same year — Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger and Ollie Schniederjans. They lined up for a group photo from oldest to youngest, sharing birthdates to make sure they got it right.

Spieth was the youngest.

This was one week after he passed $9 million in career money.

Spieth went on to win five times that year, including the Masters and U.S. Open, missing the British Open playoff by one shot and finishing second in the

PGA Championship. He had a 60% rate finishing in the top 10 and set a PGA Tour record with $12,030,465 in earnings.

Woods in 2000 won nine times, including three majors. He was runner-up four times and only finished out of the top 10 three times in 20 starts. He made $9,188,321 that year.

The money keeps going up. The Players Championship paid $3.6 million to the winner — the total purse was $3.5 million the first year Woods played.

Is it enough for anyone to catch Woods?

McIlroy, who turns 33 in two weeks, is just over $59 million behind.

Spieth is $70 million back, and not quite $4 million ahead of his contemporary, Justin Thomas. Dustin Johnson has just over $74 million in career earnings. He turns 38 in June.

Even with today’s money, they all seem so far away. Just like always.
