85th annual Men’s Am set for Aug. 5-8 at Bartlett

OLEAN — In a golf season totally disrupted by Covid-19, the 84th annual Southwestern New York-Northwestern Pennsylvania Men’s Amateur managed to draw 118 entrants to Bartlett Country Club, the largest field in 11 years, and staged one of the most impressive finals’ performances in tournament history.

Jack Geise and Dan Gianniny, seniors on the St. Bonaventure golf team, squared off in a Championship Flight title match that paired the two best friends and roommates.

It was no contest.

Geise, who now lives in San Diego but has family in Olean and Portville, prevailed 10-and-9 in the 36-hole final, the most one-sided Men’s Amateur championship score since the late Eddie Forrest downed Bill Pedacchio, 11-and9, in 1971.

In the morning 18, Geise shot a 5-under par 65, to which an awed Gianniny, from the Rochester suburb of Pittsford, noted with a chuckle, “I shot 75 and he won by 10 strokes.”

Geise ended the match at the midway point of the afternoon round having birdied 10 of the 27 holes.

Both are on this year’s Bona team, but will have graduated and probably won’t return for the 85th renewal Aug. 4-8 at Bartlett, which will now have hosted all or part of the area’s premier match-play tournament for the 61st time.

The event will open with an 18-hole medal qualifying round Wednesday, Aug. 4.

That qualifier will slot the field into a 32-man Championship Flight with 16man brackets filling the rest of the field.

Match play begins on Thursday and Championship Flight losers will be placed in a Consolation flight.

An over-60 consolation flight will be held for players that age who lose

their opening-round match in any flight but the Championship (which has its own consolation). The top eight players, based on their qualifying-round score, are re-bracketed in the new flight and compete in match play through Sunday’s final.

On Friday, Aug. 6, the Championship and Consolation brackets will play two rounds and the other flights one, reducing the field to Saturday’s semifinals.

The finals will be Sunday and all flights will play an 18-hole final except the Championship, which is 36.

Entry fee remains $120 and includes a chicken barbecue on Wednesday afternoon after the medal qualifier, with all participants guaranteed two rounds.

Practice rounds can be played for $20.

In addition, for the 24th time and 22nd consecutive year, the tourney will host the annual Shootout of Previous Champions, a 7-hole event using a steeplechase format on Tuesday evening (Aug. 3).

Nine-time champion Chris Blocher has won the Shootout four times, sixtime champ Dan Stetz, the late John Forrest, a three-time titleist, and Scott Crist were Shootout winners three times and Eric McHone claimed two.

Also for the 22nd straight year, the Men’s Amateur will donate to its two not-for-profit benefactors: The ReHabilitation Center Foundation and HomeCare & Hospice. Last year, each received $8,000, bringing the tourney’s total donation to $352,000.

The tournament also funds the entry fee for the 10 players from the Penn-York Junior Golf League who qualify, plus the John Henzel Memorial Scholarship, which goes to a golfer from a Big 30 school. To date, nearly $12,000 has been donated to a college freshmanto-be in the 24 years of the Henzel Scholarship.

Bona golfers getting better as season goes along

ST. BONAVENTURE -- The rust was evident.

In its first competitive round in nearly a year, the St. Bonaventure golf team turned in a score of 320 (an average of 80 per player). In its first tournament, the Ross Collegiate Classic in Southern Pines, N.C., it finished last among 13 teams (at plus-68), a numbing 57 shots behind the winner.

But those numbers, as unsightly as they might have been, were to be expected. After all, due primarily to COVID-19, the fact that Bona had even made it to Mid-Pines Golf Club was almost a victory in itself.

Bona, as with most programs, had its fall season wiped out due to the pandemic. And even after getting the okay to play in the spring, it was told it wasn’t allowed to fly, thereby delaying the start of its season and limiting the number of available tournaments. That, of course, is an addition to the fact it typically has almost no chance of practicing outside (due to the winter weather) until teeing it up for real.

“We like to normally get our season going in mid-February,” coach Ryan Swanson explained, “just so we can at least get a solid two months of prep and some competitive action before (the Atlantic 10 Championship). This year … we’re not allowed to fly anywhere until we go to Florida (for A-10s). We had to really adjust our spring schedule

to the point where we didn’t start until the second week of March.”

And when it finally did, it involved an 11-hour drive to North Carolina.

Hence, Swanson’s ability to laughingly shake off what happened in Round No. 1.

THE NEXT day, however, as might happen in a sport as unpredictable as golf, Bona had a far better outing.

Senior Danny Gianniny bounced back from a first-round 78 to tie for the tournament’s low score at 68. The Bonnies, as a team, improved by 17 strokes, forging a more palatable 303.

And since then, they’ve, quite literally, only gotten better with each passing round.

Bona went from a last-place finish

to tying for 11th of 16 teams, with a low round of 290, at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. It then captured its fifth-straight Little 3 title with a 296 and, last Monday, took fourth of 13 teams (with a pair of sub300 rounds) at the Lafayette Collegiate Invitational in Hellertown, Pa. The difference between mid-March and now: it’s finally had some time to adjust.

“Having the ability in our setup that we have inside (at Bona), we’re certainly blessed to have that and it’s great, but you just can’t simulate hitting off of grass, and especially off of Bermuda grass in North Carolina,” Swanson noted. “And then you move up to Williamsburg, where it’s a little bit ...continued on next page

of Bermuda, and it’s fast and it’s a little bit of bluegrass, you just can’t simulate those things in the winter.

“You can work on your swing, you can hit balls off a perfect lie all day, and it’s great. Hopefully you can work off a little rust, but those two tournaments … it showed our weaknesses, for sure. We really struggled down there.”

BONA HAD returned its top three golfers from a team that fared well in 201920 (before the season was cut short by the onset of the pandemic): Christian Chapman, Jack Geise and Giannany, the latter two of whom played in last summer’s SWNY-NWPA Men’s Amateur final.

So, to Swanson, it was only a matter of time before his team would begin to “figure it out.” And so far, the Bonnies are proving their coach right.

“Danny … had the low round at Mid-Pines, so immediately we saw something good,” Swanson said. “But it had only been from one guy. Then, the very next day, Christian shot 1-under.

GOLF GUIDE 2021 After one day back of competing, a year removed from competition, the first round was pretty bad; the guys will admit that. But we started seeing good things in rounds two and three, and even though we didn’t finish where we wanted, and we played pretty poorly, we really did see things early.”

And those early signs have manifested themselves here: with another Little 3 championship, in which Geise took second overall with a 2-over 72, and a strong effort at Lafayette, where Giannany had a glittering 36-hole total of 5-under 139 en route to placing second of 76 participants.

“The Little 3, in absolutely miserable conditions, we fire a sub-300, which I thought was really, really good, and then that carried right over into Lafayette; we fire a 291, Danny shoots under par,” Swanson said of the April turnaround. “We’ve got guys that are really stepping up to kind of carry us and the other guys are stepping up a little bit more.

better and I think we’re really, really close. And the guys know they’re close, so we’re just trying to tidy things up here in the last 10 days and be ready for (A-10s) in Orlando.”

FOR BONA, its spring path has been bumpy from the start.

Swanson’s group had nearly three weeks off between its first two events and had to drive to both North Carolina and Virginia. It then had to withdraw from its first event in April, the Villanova Wildcat Invitational, due to the death of a member in the extended Bona golf family, creating another twoweek gap in play.

But though it started late and hasn’t been able to play in as many tournaments as it might in a normal year (just the four to date), its spirits remain high.

And that, plus a steadily improving team, is all it can ask for heading into the season-ending A-10 Championship.

“We’re doing the best we can with the hand we’ve been dealt,” Swanson maintained.

“It’s been a little difficult for us and the guys, but they’re handling it really well and we’re seeing some really good stuff out of all the guys that have been traveling. It’s just a matter of kind of piecing it together.”

He added, “Maybe if we’d started in February, things would be pieced together already, I don’t know; golf ’s a funny game like that. But they’re starting to look really good at the right time, so we’re certainly excited for this last week.”
