NEW COACHES Four Big 30 schools changed head coaches this year, though all four new coaches have prior experience on staff at their schools, none more than Tony Gerg. After taking last season off, Gerg stepped right back into his old position at Elk County Catholic. Gerg had a record of 41-36 over eight seasons in his initial run with the Crusaders.Othernew Big 30 coaches include Marcus Grove at Allegany-Lime stone, Jarrod Bell at Wellsville and Joel Lent at Smethport. All three coaches served on their school’s staff recently, with Grove the defensive coordinator under Tom Callen and Joel Lent the offensive coordinator under Adam Jack. Bell was a former head coach at Wellsville and spent last year on staff with David Wild at C-R.

Cuba-Rushford and Sheffield also are seeking their first wins since 2019. The Rebels have a 12-game losing streak since winning their last two games of 2019, a 13-12 win over Geneseo/Mount Morris and a forfeit over Perry. The Wolverines have lost their last 11 since a 22-14 win over Port Allegany in ‘19, including one game in 2020 before canceling the rest of their season. As the Big 30 did not have a state champion in 2021, most teams do not carry over a win streak into 2022. Allegany-Limestone won its final two games last year, defeating Chau tauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton 26-0 in its last regular season contest then racing past Springville 47-6 in a Week 9 matchup game.

STREAKS Bradford High currently holds the longest win drought in the Big 30, having lost its last 17 games. The Owls’ last victory came late in the 2019 season, defeating Punxsutaw ney 59-34.

Drew Evens Sr., QB-DB, Port Allegany Evens enjoyed a solid junior year for a rising Port A team, completing 124-of-221 passes for 1,810 yards and 13 touchdowns with two rushing scores. He also had 42 tackles and three interceptions defensively. Now a fourth-year starting QB, he’s expected to have a standout year as perhaps the top returning signal-caller in Pennsy.

Additionally, Archer added another 453 yards on punt/kick returns while also pro ducing 49 tackles and three picks as a defensive back/linebacker en route to D-9 Small School all-star honors.

Zander Keim Jr., RB-LB, Portville One of the headliners of Port ville’s rising crop of talent, Keim was a top-tier linebacker while earn ing Big 30 All-Star status a year ago. Keim was a dual-purpose player offensively, rushing 41 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns while also totaling a team-best 21 receptions for 271 yards and four more scores. He was even better defen sively, though, piling up 73 tackles (No. 2 on his team), six sacks, six tackles for loss, three interceptions and a fumble recovery while being one of three Portville linebackers named to the First Team Defense in Class D. Logan Mosier Sr., WR-DB, St. Marys Perhaps the best returning receiver in the area, Mosier made the Big 30 All-Star team last fall. He was also chosen to the District 9 Large School All-Star team on both offense ANDMosierdefense.racked up 58 receptions for 995 yards, just missing a rare 1,000-yard receiving mark, and 11 touchdowns as the top option for star quarterback Christian Coudriet on another solid St. Marys team in 2021. As a defensive back, he was just as good, totaling 83 tackles, including three for loss, plus an in terception that he returned 85 yards for a touchdown.

Now a three-year starter, Faller was perhaps among the most under rated linemen in the Big 30 last fall. Defensively, he totaled 77 tackles (50 solo), including eight for loss, with two sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception while being named First Team Defense in Section 6 Class C South. Kaedon Holcomb Jr., RB-LB, Portville In a breakout junior year, Hol

Another standout receiver in the Dutch’s high-powered, Coudriet-led offense, Chadsey caught 54 balls for 800 yards and nine touchdowns. He might have been even better defensively, notching 32 tackles and six interceptions while earning D-9 Large School all-star recognition on both offense and defense.

Ryan Carpenter Sr., OL-DL, Randolph If Hind had a head-turning junior season, as is typically the case at Randolph, a big, impressive line was a huge reason why. And Carpenter was the anchor of thatThestaff.6-foot-1, 290-pounder was perhaps the best lineman in the Big 30 (though that postseason honor went to Salamanca’s Kody Shin ners), paving the way for Hind’s 1,745-yard season while being named the Section 6 Class D Line man of the Year and earning First Team All-State honors (on offense), one of three Cardinals with that distinction.Defensively, he had 37 tackles, three sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries.

Findlay (Ohio) Athletics photo Findlay’s (Ohio) Mike Rigerman (35) puts a move on a Shepherd defender during an NCAA Division II playoff game last November in Shepherdstown, W.Va. The former Pioneer star had a career outing that day, catching eight passes for 178 yards and a touchdown.

Two years ago, Mike Rigerman might not have been able to envision this.In August 2020, the former Pio neer star had hit a bit of a crossroads athletically. His sophomore season at Division II Findlay University (Ohio) had officially been pushed to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And though his team went forward with fall practice in the meantime, he chose to remain home that semester, taking online classes in the interest of safety for his immuno-compromised mother. It was the first fall without foot ball that Rigerman could remember. The stillness of the world, even then, gave him time to reflect. And in those uncertain days, he acknowl edged: His future on the gridiron seemed murky.

Rigerman, Frank look to capitalize on all-league campaigns

“It almost makes me feel like I’m done,” he said at the time. “I’m not used to this; usually I have football all year round, or wrestling or track, and without having something, it just makes me feel like I’m done, like that was my last time.”

Rigerman, one of the most fero cious and decorated players in Big 30 histo ry, though, didn’t want to beAnddone.thankfully, he wasn’t.With COVID condi tions improving, Riger man elected to return to school for the second semester and join Findlay for its short ened spring campaign. And so began the true start for what has become an impressive collegiate career. That spring, the star running back turned tight end played in all six of Findlay’s games, with four starts, catching six passes for 56 yards and three touchdowns. Given how lim ited the action — and participating teams — was, that was enough to earn him First Team All-Great Mid western Athletic Conference honors. But it was only a prelude to what came just a few months later. Last fall, as the full-time starter, Rigerman had a breakout campaign, totaling 40 receptions for 493 yards, an average of 12.3 yards per catch, and six touchdowns in 12 games. He also helped the Oilers to their first league title since 1997. Against No. 8 Shepherd in the NCAA playoffs, he had a career game, logging eight catches for 178 yards and a TD. Rigerman was again named First Team All-GMAC, but this time he was also named First Team All-Region by D2CCA and, even more impressively, was one of two Findlay players to earn Don Hansen All-America honors. But the highest compliment paid to him might have come from his own“Justprogram.asophomore (in eligibili ty), Rigerman is poised to become one of the all-time great tight ends
