Bartoszek returns home, hopes to push Warriors out of ‘comfort zone’ By Sam Wilson Sports Editor SALAMANCA — Chad Bartoszek made a big change to step out of his self-described “comfort zone.” He hopes his new players can do the same. Bartoszek had found a nice routine at Franklinville/Ellicottville, and built a consistent small-school winner between the two schools. He knew his fellow coaches and his players from six years on the job at Ellicottville, and the players came up learning how to play as Titans in his system. But now, as he returns back to where his football career started — his hometown and alma mater high school — Bartoszek sounds eager to take on a new challenge. “It’s exciting for me as a coach and being back in some familiar places and being around the things that I grew up with,” he said. “It is an exciting time. But you also have some of the discomfort that you got used to. As a coach going into my seventh year, at Franklinville/Ellicottville I was getting into a groove, comfort zone, I felt really good about what we were doing and where we were going and you just get into a nice place from where you start building, building and all of a sudden you start to see things are just working the way that you want your program to work.” Building new relationships will take time. “It comes from practice time to picture day to game week and the kids get used to you and you get used to the kids, but when you have to redo it all and start from scratch, it’s a challenge,” he said. “It’s a little uncomfortable. But like I said, it’s exciting because it is a challenge.” Bartoszek inherits a program that made gains in the last two seasons, posting .500 or better regular seasons in Class D under coach Paul Haley (now the Warriors’ JV head coach). Last year’s Warriors graduated a big senior class, including Big 30 All-Stars Tyler Hedlund and Ira John, but 11 letterwinners including four starters return. After splitting time last year with then-senior Zariah Armstrong, rising junior Lucas McKenna gets his chance to impress as Salamanca’s quarterback. similar responsibilities to the mobile playmaking quarterbacks Bartoszek coached at F/E. “If we’re on the field healthy and everyone is accounted for, you’re going to see a nice-sized group up front,” Bartoszek said. “You’re going to see some size to us. We’ve got a lot of returning linemen who are young, they’ll be back again next year. They’re doing a great job right now in camp getting our blocking scheme down. Our quarterback’s a returner, he got a lot of reps last year, him and Zariah, but Lucas McKenna’s going to run the show. He’s going to have a similar role to what a quarterback does in this offense. He’s going to have to run the show and he’s going to be a major player.” Bartoszek said he’s ran similar offenses the last five years with “tweaks to adjust to our players,” and that should continue at his new school. “I feel comfortable with what we’ve been doing, so we’re going to run a similar style offense and we’re going to tweak here and there to adjust to personnel,” he

And a lot of that will be dictated by our talent and by our personnel come (though our) scrimmage and through game week. Then it’s up to us coaches to adjust, but I think playbook-wise, offensively we’re going to be similar to what the Titans have been doing and just adjust.” Aaron Hill will be Salamanca’s defensive coordinator with

Learning from a legend New coaches at Salamanca, F/E, A-L recall how Whitcher shaped their football lives By Sam Wilson Sports Editor Decades after his graduation from Salamanca High School, Jason Marsh still had something to learn from George Whitcher when it came to football. Marsh, early in his tenure as Salamanca’s varsity football coach in the mid-2000s, replacing Rich Morton — a former Whitcher assistant — found himself looking for answers about preparing for a sectional playoff opponent. So Marsh, a 1991 SHS graduate, and his thenassistant, Chad Bartoszek, a 1999 Salamanca grad, paid Whitcher a visit. “We were talking to him about ‘How are we going to stop this offense,’ and this and that,” Marsh said, recalling his visit with Whitcher. “George gave us probably an hour after practice one day, and everything he was saying was something that Chad and I had never even thought of and we both looked at each other and said, ‘Wow.’ He just has so much knowledge. He was just a student of the game, put so much time into it. “He was always prepared, and that was some of the things I remember, how much time he put into preparing for games. His film work was unreal. We
never went into a game — at least in my playing days — that George coached that we were unprepared, not once.” Whitcher coached the Warriors from 197498, winning 167 games and seven Section 6 championships. And while the Warriors’ coaching legend stepped away from Salamanca 21 years ago, his influence on high school football coaching continues to this day, and not just on the sidelines of Salamanca’s Veterans Memorial Park. This season, three of the coaches taking new jobs in the Big 30, all in Cattaraugus County, share a connection to the heyday of Salamanca football. All three played for Whitcher. Bartoszek returns to his hometown to lead the Warriors after six seasons in Ellicottville (five with the merged Franklinville/ Ellicottville Titans). Marsh, the Warriors’ former head coach and a former F/E assistant, replaces Bartoszek as the Titans’ head coach. Tom Callen, a 1994 SHS grad, is the new head coach leading the AlleganyLimestone Gators. WHAT WAS IT about the Whitcher era that resulted in a decadespanning, ever-growing coaching tree? “It would be hard to
speak for everyone else,” JV coaches on Salamanca’s Bartoszek said of his fellow staff, six played football at SHS graduate coaches. “I the school, most of them imagine having successful for Whitcher: Paul Furlong, seasons back-to-back, overPaul Haley, Aaron Hill, and-over, the commitment Dustin Ross, Ray Haley and to the football program Seth Hostuttler. then where we didn’t want to let him, let former players, let our coaches down,” Bartoszek recalled. Now, from his perspective as a seventhyear head coach approaching his first leading the Warriors, Bartoszek marvels at Whitcher’s preparation work. “As a player, I remember looking up to him as such an elevated figure in the football community,” Bartoszek said. “Now as a coach, I’m just amazed at how far ahead of the game he was in terms of his preparation, his practice prep, his execution. He had it going on for so long that we kind of took it for granted. Now that I’m doing it myself, it’s like, ‘Holy cow.’ It’s not easy to get a well-oiled machine going. It takes a lot of work and he had it going on. As a coach, I appreciate that.” MARSH RECALLS his playing days as a “great time in my life,” and credits that to the success he and his teammates had under Whitcher. “We had a lot of success playing for George, and he really taught us a lot about how to be young men,” he said. “He demanded that we be disciplined, and I think he taught us a lot of lessons that we used on the football field but they also translated
George Whitcher
into giving us success in what we do with the rest of our lives. He taught us how to be disciplined, how to be a good teammate, how to be responsible and accountable. And he taught us how to persevere. A lot of those lessons I use on a daily basis.” But deciding he wanted to coach the game didn’t come until a decade after his high school graduation. “When I graduated high school, I don’t think I went, ‘Hey, I want to be a high school football coach someday,’” Marsh said. “But when the opportunity presented itself back in 2001 when Rich Morton asked me to be a part of the coaching staff, I didn’t know if I was cut out for it. I just know that I had a love for football. So definitely, George had a great influence on me as a coach. Then from there, I just kind of fell in love with coaching. I know that we all really had a lot of respect for George because of the lessons he taught us.” Marsh said he models principles like accountability and responsibility based on what Whitcher taught him. While his coaching style may have adjusted to the times, “those things all apply.” “George was tough, but he was fair,” Marsh said. “If

Patient Miller ready to work with T-Wolves in 25th year on sidelines By Sam Wilson Sports Editor
CATTARAUGUS — Entering his 25th season as a head coach, Tim Miller has a little more perspective and, in his words, “patience,” than he did to start his career. Miller got his start coaching the Cattaraugus Big Red, then saw the football program through the merger into CattaraugusLittle Valley and stuck with the sport long enough to become the Big 30’s longest tenured coach last season. The last few seasons haven’t treated the Timberwolves well, however, winning just five games over the last three years. But approaching a quarter-century leading football teams, Miller doesn’t judge those seasons solely on win-loss records. “I think to have the kids take out of the last game the same positive feeling they have going into the first game,” Miller said of what makes a successful season, “despite what may be not a great season, but to have a positive attitude about having been a part of this program, and been a part of something they can be proud of. You don’t have to win every game to be proud of what you do. If you work
hard every day, and you improve at what you do, you might see CSP (state champion Clymer/Sherman/ Panama) early in the season and lose by 40 and you might face them later and lose by 21. “You’ve gotten better and that’s huge. Because if they continue on that path, you take out of it ‘I can always get better.’ If we can bring kids out of the end of the season feeling that way, we’ve done our jobs.” Last season, C-LV went 1-8 (1-7 regular season), picking up its lone win in non-league play against Roy-Hart. CSP bested the Timberwolves three times, while Maple Grove and Salamanca swept two regular season meetings each against C-LV, the latter in a pair of one-score games (26-20 and 14-6). Miller’s patience could be tested again this season, as the Timberwolves weather some lower numbers — 40 combined players for varsity and JV — though he has a few seniors already showing leadership. If C-LV has a strength, through, if should be up front, with four linemen returning with starting experience. “We’re usually mid-toupper 40s,” Miller said. “So we’re struggling a little bit

from personnel standpoint. “Our line should be pretty solid. We had so much shuffling around last year between injuries and just changes in personnel that the kids we bring back on the line have a solid amount of experience. We’re going to kind of build around that. We’re green almost everywhere else. So we’ve really got to mature and come together quick from a skill-position standpoint.” Nick Burroughs (running back/linebacker) and Jason Young (two-way lineman) should lead C-LV’s skill groups and lines, respectively. “We’re getting really solid effort out of these kids,” Miller said. “They’re working hard, they seem to have some good chemistry — we don’t seem to see a lot of guys butting heads, they seem real together — and that’s always a big plus.” Miller said the Timberwolves had strong summer weight room participation, but getting the team together for on-field workouts before practice started on Monday proved to be difficult. “We have a lot of kids that are involved in farming, so the fair season takes kids away,” he said. “Wou have the Catt County Fair and the Erie County Fair in July and August, so a lot of our kids are involved with that. They take animals and they show ‘em, so they’re out of pocket for that time. The kids that

Head Coach Tim Miller (25th season) did show up worked hard. “We had weight room two times a day — two availabilities a day — so we would get mixed attendance there but most of the guys who couldn’t make it in the morning, would show up in the evening, so we did make some gains strength-wise over the summer in terms of lifting, but we didn’t get a lot of on the field stuff done that we would have liked to.” Even though the state champion CSP graduated most of its starters, Miller doesn’t expect the Class D league to get any easier, especially with Franklinville/Ellicottville and Randolph dropping back down. “CSP, the run they had last year was just unbelievable and I don’t think their JV team had a point spread lower than 20 points in their juggernaut through the JV season,” Miller said. “So they’re going to be solid again. always a good program. Randolph, you know what to expect there, Randolph’s always going to be a good, solid football program. “But we had a couple of our better performances against CSP despite what the final scores would look like. Our kids turned out and played hard. So to me that’s critical. If your kids can show up and compete, you’re ahead of the game, and that’s one of the things that we preach constantly, ‘Look, you might be outsized, you might be facing a team that’s faster, but you have to show up and compete. You can’t just go in a shell.’ If our kids will do that, good things happen.” Of all the ways Miller has changed over 25 years, including adapting to a changing and more spread out game — “It used to be you could count on probably 75 of your season lining up against a power football team and it was just nose-tonose, hammering football,” he said — he values the patience he’s learned. “I used to sometimes be my own worst enemy,” Miller said. “A kid would make a mistake and not just me, but I set the tone for my whole staff, we would come down pretty hard on kids for mistakes and these are teenage kids, they’re going to make mistakes. So I’ve become more patient with that. “I’ve become more patient with the referees, although they might disagree. I think they all probably find me more palatable than they did 25 years ago. I guess I just have
more of a recognition for the human side of the sport. Everybody here is human, everybody makes mistakes and I feel like I’m in a better position to deal with those mistakes, how to handle them without losing my cool.” THE RETURNING starters: Nick Burroughs, sr., 5-10, 175, running back/linebacker Jason Young, sr., 6-2, 250, line both ways Brodie Hill, jr., 5-11, 240, line both ways Mickey Guerin, sr., 6-2, 240, line both ways Dylan Barber, sr., 5-11, 270, line both ways Hunter Furl, sr., 6-0, 165, running back/linebacker ALSO LETTERING were: Sully Higgins, sr., 5-11, 155, wide receiver/defensive back Nick Williams, sr., 6-1, 225, line both ways Caiden Kittle, sr., 5-11, 165, end both ways Joe Quigley, jr., 5-7, 155, running back/linebacker Mike Riggle, sr., 5-9, 220, line both ways THE PLAYERS, by position: Offense Quarterbacks: Justin York (sr., 5-10, 150), Higgins, Burroughs Running Backs: Burroughs, Furl, Quigley, Cullen Guerin (jr., 5-10, 170), Williams Ends/Receivers: Higgins, Elijah Perkins (jr., 6-3, 155), Kittle (sr., 5-11, 165), Lizzie Hines (jr., 5-6, 150), Gage Furl (soph., 5-10, 150) Guards/Tackles: Young, Hill, M. Brown looks forward to seeing young Cardinals develop By Sam Wilson Sports Editor
RANDOLPH — It’s safe to say this is the youngest team Brent Brown will have coached in his seven years leading the Randolph Cardinals. Of course, when Brown took over the Cardinals, he inherited a defending state champion in 2013 and promptly led Randolph to a three-peat, winning the New York State Class D titles in ‘13 and 2014 with deep, talented squads. While Randolph has not returned to the sectional championship round since, the Cardinals have enjoyed .500 or better seasons each year under Brown, compiling a 43-18 record in his career, the last two seasons in a merger with Frewsburg. But with Frewsburg fielding its own team once again (albeit in eight-man football) this fall, the Cardinals are left with a mostly inexperienced team and the youngest of Brown’s career. Brown returns four starting position-players, plus a kicker, and two other returning lettermen. “We’re going to be young, but we’ve got a really good bunch of young kids,” he said. “So it’ll be fun. They’ve got a lot to learn.” Randolph started the season with 22 players on the varsity roster. “We were together with Frewsburg when they had number issues and last year and this year were really going to be our number-issue years,” Brown said. “Our numbers are going to bounce back next year and the year after, we’re going to be good. But this year, we’re going to have to get a little bit creative with how we handle things so that we can go.” The lower numbers have made practice look a bit different. “Typically we have a separate JV team with starters and scout team and the same thing on the varsity,” Brown said. “We just don’t have enough to have scout teams for both, so we’re going to be doing some stuff together.” Randolph will have an all-new offensive line with all five starters graduating. Jason Ploetz (center) and Christian Andrews return as letterwinners. “We’ve got some size,” Brown said. “You take kids that were juniors last year that are going to be a senior this year like Ploetz, he’s going to get in there and play center, and you’ve got some kids coming up the JVs, they’ve been playing. And we’ve got a couple of young guys in there that just have good size. I don’t think we’ll be small up front, it’s just every week they’ve got to get better and they’ve got to get better, that’s all.” Senior Tyler Hind, the Daemen College-bound RCS basketball star, returns as Randolph’s starting quarterback. He’ll be joined in the backfield by two experienced backs, Isaac Hind (his cousin) and Alex Finch, among others, and Josh Brown returns as a starting tight end. “Last year he did a good job,” Brown said of his quarterback. “Obviously he’s got to continue doing what he’s doing and we’re certainly going to rely on him a lot especially in the beginning. “We didn’t throw that much (last year) ... we’re Randolph. But he’s certainly capable and we’ve got a couple of guys that can catch the ball. So if we have to go to that — and we may have to, with a young line, it might be tough to just run people over, we
may have to throw a little more than the last couple (of years) — I think we’re capable of doing that.” With only a handful of returning starters and lettermen, Brown needs those few to be leaders “and they have been all summer.” The Cardinals got a glimpse of their new lineup with some light scrimmage work over the summer. “We did some 7-on-7 but we also did some scrimmaging with Falconer and Jamestown up at Strider (Field) with uppers, helmets and shoulder pads,” Brown said. “That’s relatively new and it was awesome to be able to do. We get our base stuff in, we get a chance to do that and those young kids, they held tough.” Last season, Randolph/Frewsburg went 5-2 in the regular season, finishing second in Coach Brent Brown Class C South. The merged squad finished (7th season) 6-3, defeating Akron 21-12 in the Class C quarterfinals but losing to Cleveland Hill, the top team in C North, 42-0. “We had a decent bunch last year,” Brown said. “It was tough. The whole merge made it difficult last year because we just had a hard time getting everybody on the same page. But we had a pretty good group of kids and up in the Cs, that was a good year. You get beat by Cleve Hill ... yeah. And we had some guys hurt too at the end of the season, so that made it tough. But it was a good year.” Without the merger, Randolph returns to Class D this year, facing several familiar schools: Franklinville/Ellicottville, Salamanca, CattaraugusLittle Valley and the defending state champions at Clymer/Sherman/Panama. Longtime RCS rival Maple Grove was originally slated to be in the league, but instead will play eight-man football, becoming the section’s second team to do so with Frewsburg. The Cardinals will see two new coaches to start the season visiting Salamanca on opening night, then playing host to Franklinville/Ellicottville in Week 2. “I think it’s the deer in the headlights, we’ve got to get rid of that,” Brown said of what he needs to see opening night. “I haven’t seen it from them. We’ve done some stuff in the summertime and they’ve responded pretty well to it. I think the more you do, they’ll start getting more comfortable and I think when they get comfortable, you can play full speed, you can be a little more physical. Once we get to that point, I think we’ll be decent.” In the closest thing to a rebuilding — or at least a transition — year in the Brown era at Randolph, he still plans to approach his goals the same way. “It’ll take some time and I think every week we’ll get better,” Brown said. “And we’ve always preached for years that every week we get better and then playoffs we want to be good and hopefully that’s the road that we’ll take.” THE RETURNING starters: Isaac Hind, jr., 5-9, 155, running back/defensive back Alex Finch, sr., 6-0, 180, running back/linebacker Josh Brown, sr., 6-2, 200, tight end/defensive end Tyler Hind, sr., 6-0, 160, quarterback/defensive back Ty Rosengren, sr., 6-2, 170, kicker ALSO LETTERING were:

Whitcher from B3 certainly picked that up from you messed up, you knew you messed up. And if you did a good job and played well, he let you know you played well. He was fair. He taught us toughness, and that’s the one thing that … we play a physical and violent sport and sometimes there aren’t nice ways to teach it and George taught us how to be tough. “When teams got done playing Salamanca back in the ’80s and ’90s and even before that, they knew they had been in a football game. That’s because of the toughness that George instilled in us.” FOR CALLEN, the “culture” of football in Salamanca drove him to stay involved in the game. This fall, he’ll be a first-time head coach, taking over for Furlong, another SHS grad, and coaching his son, Gators quarterback Thomas Callen. The older Callen still sees that passion for football in his hometown. “In Salamanca, football is king — I should say was king. Those were some of the golden years of the program’s history,” he said. “It’s a different animal in Salamanca when you talk about football, and there’s still a lot of passion around it even though they haven’t had the success that they enjoyed in the ’80s and ’90s and 2000s. People still embrace it. They still want to see (that success). “There’s a lot of people that stayed in Salamanca and they remember those days, and we had a lot of success back then. I think people just want to duplicate that. They just want to show it can happen again.” Callen also remembered Whitcher’s detailed preparation and hopes to emulate it during his career. “I know he watched a lot of film, paid a lot of attention to the small things, formation-wise, how to attack certain defenses, so I

him and his work ethic,” he noted. The players who lived through the “golden years” are now in charge of keeping the sport alive in the area. “So many great football players came out of that era that they just want to teach it,” Callen said. “They had such a good experience, I think, that they just want to continue and pass that down to another generation. If you don’t do that, then it dies.” Passing it down involves teaching a safer version of the game, Callen said. Times have changed since Callen’s playing days, when “you always used to just shake off if you saw stars after a big hit.” “Football overall is dying in this area,” Callen continued. “That’s why you see so many merged teams, parents just don’t want to send their kids out because Press photo by Sam Wilson they feel it’s unsafe, but Pictured is the 2019 Salamanca Sabers midget cheerleading football team. It’s got to start at the youth level and go all the way up through to college. We can’t keep losing these kids to head injuries, and you’ve got to start teaching them to shoulder-tackle. The old style of hitting with the crown is bad, it’s got to stop.” Callen acknowledged he can’t coach with the same intensity he was coached, but noted that Whitcher knew which buttons to push with his players. “You certainly can’t do what we did back in the ’90s,” he said. “That style doesn’t fly anymore. But you can still coach the kids hard. Every kid is different, and that’s part of a coach’s job is to figure out what kids you can push, what kids don’t respond to harsh criticism, what kids need to be prodded. Warriors from B2 big things from his and varsity staff. So instead of dividing us by groups, we’re just not big enough to do that, so we’re going offense-defense.” With much of last year’s staff returning, it’s helped Bartoszek get to know the team, but he hopes the new coaches (himself, Furlong and Ray Haley) help the players step out of their comfort zones. “It’s interesting. We have a lot of familiar faces for the Warriors here, where I’m comfortable asking them for help with things,” he said. “Where do different things take place? I didn’t know our (team) pictures were here (at Veterans Park), for example. But there’s enough familiar faces here where there’s a comfort zone for the kids. But we also have a couple new coaches who, we’re making it a little bit uncomfortable for the kids and trying to change the way we do things and just elevate it to a championship level.” Bartoszek expects
players, but during his first official week of practice, didn’t want to identify them yet. “I want them to earn that, I want them to prove it, we’re trying to push them to lead and push themselves to a different level,” he said. “They’ve made some great gains here the last few years to normalize the program and that credit goes to Paul and the staff that’s in place and the administration and the people in the community who have supported the Warriors in some pretty dark times. “However, our job is to elevate that. So we’re trying to come in here and push them to the next step and I think that we’re leaving it up to the kids to fend for themselves when it comes to leadership a little bit. We’re teaching them how to do it. But they’ve got to get out of their comfort zones in some things.” Bartoszek, who works with USA Football as a “Master Trainer” in Heads Up Football technique, said he meets coaches from

Ken Stoldt said this year gave Section 6 the perfect amount of schools to split Class B football teams into four divisions for the first time. With 20 ‘B’ schools in the section, there are four divisions of five schools each in Class B this season. The divisions are determined by BEDS numbers, with the largest schools in Class B1 and smallest in B4. “We can actually only do it when we have 20 B schools,” Stoldt, the Section 6 football chairman, said of the alignment. “That’s what we had this year. We usually have been saddled with 19 or 21 and honestly with 21, we have three divisions of seven so it’s somewhat apples to apples, but when we have 19, it creates a problem and when teams are fighting for those seven and eight playoff spots, one team has an extra division game or one less and we end up going by win-loss percentage and it creates problems.” Olean is in the B3 division, facing Springville, Albion, Depew and Lackawanna. Pioneer landed in the biggest division, playing Lake Shore, Cheektowaga, East Aurora/Holland and Lew-Port in B1. Only the top two finishers in each division make the playoffs in Class B. The division winners will be seeded 1-4 based on league record, followed by the federation tie break system. Similarly, the division runners-up receive seeds 5-8. If two division winners or runners-up have the same league record, their seeding could come down to performance in “crossover” games, which are non-league games against other ‘B’ schools. The games won’t determine who makes the playoffs, but could determine seeding among tied playoff qualifiers. “They have four games in their division, and we put out of the three remaining games, one is just a non-league game that has no bearing on anything,” Stoldt said. “But the other two are what we call crossover games and it was done to try and help ease some travel. “For the most part they’re close trips against B schools and it does enter into a tiebreak process for seeding in the playoffs. It has no bearing on whether you make the playoffs, but it does have some bearing possibly on seeding.” — Class C South, which includes AlleganyLimestone and Portville, loses two teams but adds another. Gone are Franklinville/Ellicottville and Randolph, back to Class D, while Fredonia drops down from Class B to C. As in past years, the top four teams from both Class C divisions (North and South) make the playoffs, with the top team in the North playing the fourth team from the south, the second team
from the south playing the third team from the north, etc. The fifth and sixth seeds from the two divisions comprise the four-team Chuck Funke Memorial Classic Class C bracket. — All five teams from Class D — Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Franklinville/ Ellicottville, Salamanca, Randolph and Clymer/ Sherman/Panama — will make the playoffs with the top three seeds receiving a bye to the semifinals. An originally planned sixth ‘D’ school, Maple Grove, dropped out during the first official week of practice and will instead play eight-man football, joining Frewsburg as the section’s first schools to return to that form of the game. The late change leaves the other D schools with an empty week in the schedule as of Thursday, Aug. 22, but Stoldt said he was in communication with Section 5 about replacement games for those teams. — Once again, the Section 6 playoffs conclude with championships at the home of the Buffalo Bills, New Era Field, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9. The following week, Section 6’s winners visit SUNY Brockport to play Section 5 champions in the Far West Regional. — As with the rest of New York state, Section 6 has adopted a new national federation rule for a 40-second play clock. This increase from 25 seconds will be in effect for all plays except for after timeouts, changes in possession or after scoring plays. “During any kind of drive, it’s for the most part going to be a 40-second clock,” Stoldt said. “(It’s) is going to be an adjustment for everybody, for coaches, officials, players. That’s going to take a couple weeks, I’m sure, to get used to.” Class AA: Hutch Tech/City 3,989, Bennett/City 1,860, Niagara Falls 1,588, Lancaster 1,405, Orchard Park 1,173, Jamestown 1,069, Clarence 1,068, Lockport 1,065, Frontier 1,036. New movies to check out this fall By Kellen M. Quigley Managing Editor
It’s not quite Oscar season, but with the leaves changing colors and temperature beginning to drop comes the movies that may have a chance for a nomination or two around awards season. Although September movies aren’t the most likely winners, some of these upcoming releases could have buzz around them as potential technical awardees for production design, cinematography, editing and sound design. They might not receive the statues come February, but with a lot of big names attached, these movies are probably still worth seeing. Sept. 13 — “The Goldfinch,” starring Ansel Elgort and Nicole Kidman In this drama, a 13-year-old boy in New York is taken in by a wealthy Upper East Side family after his mother is killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Confused in the rubble of the tragedy, he steals a priceless piece of art known as The Goldfinch. Directed by John Crowley, best known for Oscar nominee “Brooklyn,” and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, “The Goldfinch” has a lot of elements that make it a likely Oscarbait movie as well as a generally effective family drama. In addition to Elgort and Kidman, the film also features Finn Wolfhard (a teen actor from “Stranger Things”), Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson and Jeffrey Wright, one of whom could nab an Oscar nod. Sept. 20 — “Ad Astra,” starring Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones In this science-fiction adventure, an astronaut travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet. He uncovers secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos. From James Gray, a relatively unknown writer/director, this is another drama set in space with hyper-realistic special effects and a somewhat meditative feel. In addition to Pitt and Jones, the film also features Liv Tyler, Ruth Negga and Donald Sutherland. It’s too early to tell if this will be going for acting nominations, but the great cast is promising nonetheless. Oct. 4 — “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro “Joker” centers around the origin of the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Writer/ director Todd Phillips’s exploration of Arthur Fleck (played by Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

There have been plenty of Jokers over the years, from greats like Heath Ledger and Mark Hamil in the animated series, to not so great like the latest Jared Leto interpretation. Although the DC and Batman comics movies have been on rock ground lately, this looks to be a promising real-world period piece set in the 1970s. Following in the footsteps of “Deadpool” and “Logan,” “Joker” is an R-rated spectacle that won’t censor the Joker’s worst traits, which is good for us. Oct. 11 — “Gemini Man,” starring Will Smith and Mary Elizabeth Winstead In this science-fiction drama, Henry Brogan (Smith), an aging government assassin seeking to exit his career, finds himself going up against a younger clone of himself named Junior, who’s able to predict his every move. With no other choice, Henry must uncover the truth behind Junior’s creation and save him from going down the same dark path Henry did. From two-time Academy Awardwinning director Ang Lee, it’s most likely that “Gemini Man” will be a visually stunning and well-composed action flick, even if it doesn’t get as good a reception as one would expect. One concerning aspect is the six writers attached to the story and screenplay, but the ever-popular technology de-aging actors on full display for Will Smith playing himself from 25 years ago is one of the most interesting things this movie has going for it. Oct. 18 — “Jojo Rabbit,” starring Scarlett Johansson and Taika Waititi This comedy-drama World War II satire follows a lonely German boy named Jojo whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (played by Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Waititi), Jojo must confront his blind nationalism. Written and directed by Waititi, who became a huge name in Hollywood after his “Thor: Ragnorak” put that series back on track, this New Zealand native was well-beloved before in smaller circles for “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” What makes this film look so great is its anti-hate stance right from the start. As Mel Brooks did in “The Producers,” the more we laugh at Hitler, the more power he loses, and Waititi is hilarious.

d e r e b m e m Re Old T imes 150 YEARS AGO n Sept. 2, 1869: The guests in “Cooper Institute” made an ineffectual attempt to leave their quarters on Sunday last (Aug. 29). They climbed to the ceiling of their reception room and endeavored to cut their way out through the roof, but their movements were discovered in time to be checkmated. n Sept. 2, 1869: We have been recording some large oat stories a week or two past, and we now are prepared to give a short one on hogs. Mr. S.A. Gladden, of Napoli, has four pigs; their respective weights seventeen days ago were as follows: 150, 182, 188, 173 lbs. During the seventeen days, they have been fed 300 lbs of cornmeal, and tall the whey they could eat. They now weigh 192, 209, 202, 230 lbs. Our columns are open for additional reports in this line of business. n Sept. 2, 1869: WHY NOT ADVERTISE IN DULL TIMES — Since the very nature of an advertisement is to secure more business and greater returns, it would seem as if the above question was practically unnecessary, yet our experience thus far proves the opposite. There is a large class of advertisers who, when dull times approach, instead of exercising the usual sagacity exhibited at other seasons, tie an additional knot in their purse strings, withdraw their names from before the public, and then sit down to lament their sad fate and wonder why so little is going on.
100 YEARS AGO n Aug. 29, 1919: (SALAMANCA —) The new home of the local council of the Knights of Columbus will be thrown open to the public this evening and visitors will be welcomed and shown through the quarters of the organization from 7:30 to 10:30. A program of music and other entertainment will also be given. It is expected that hundreds will attend the event. The new home of the Knights is the McCann building on main street which they purchased a few months ago. It is one of the finest structures in the business section and now not only remains one of the principal business blocks of the city but has also been converted into a sumptuous clubhouse. n Sept. 2, 1919: (LITTLE VALLEY —) The Little Valley fair opened yesterday to continue all this week and today the attendance is larger than on any Tuesday since the annual exhibitions of the organization were begun. The figures are not given out by the management, but at noon it was stated that the attendance was within 75 of the record Tuesday of 1912. Tuesday is not a “big day” at the fair, Wednesday and Thursday for eclipse it. Friday also generally having good attendance, under good weather conditions. The attraction at the fair this year include harness racing, ball games and free outdoor attractions on the stage near the judge’s stand.
50 YEARS AGO n Aug. 29, 1969: (SALAMANCA —) The attractive sign at the entrance to Iroquois Dr., which has drawn much favorable comment, is the result of a project in which the City of Salamanca, Salamanca Central School District and Salamanca Housing Authority cooperated. Undertaken to beautify the two-lane entrance to Hillview Homes and the junior-senior high school, the project involved first the City Public Works Dept. which “corrected” the low spot at its intersection with Broad St. in which water stood every time it rained.

The sign and wood frame from which it hangs were made by Vito Basile, industrial arts instructor at the high school. William G. Keeler, high school art teacher, did the lettering. n Aug. 30, 1969: (SALAMANCA —) Henry Halsaver, of 131 Ellicott St., caught his first eel Friday (Aug. 29) while fishing in the Allegheny Reservoir near Coldspring. He said he was fishing with night crawlers when he got the 36-inch eel just below the new bridge that carries Rt. 17 over the reservoir. Mr. Halsaver, who plans to eat the eel, said he was fishing alone “off old Rt. 280 about 10:30 a.m.” n Sept. 3, 1969: RANDOLPH — Plans for expansion of both the office building and plant of Borden Foods Co., 26 Center St., were revealed to the Randolph Village Board Tuesday night (Sept. 2) by Burton West of East Randolph, general manager of Borden’s machinery division. Mr. West said the accounting operation for the Can and Machinery Division will be moved to Randolph from New York City, which is one reason for the office expansion. The other, he said, is to separate the division office from the plant office. The present office building, which extends north from Center St. to the plan, Mr. West said, will be expanded to the west, along Center St., with an addition about 100 by 64 feet adding about 6,000 square feet of office space.
25 YEARS AGO n Aug. 29, 1994: LITTLE VALLEY — The Rock city Hotel, a charred shell since Nov. 30 when it was destroyed by fire, will be nothing more than a haunting memory by Halloween. Foreclosure proceedings for back taxes at 100 Fair Oak St. were begun by Cattaraugus County in June. County Attorney Dennis Tobolski expects the title will be transferred by Oct. 15. “Demolition is to be completed by Halloween,” Tobolski said. n Aug. 31, 1994: IRVING — New dates have been announced by the Seneca Nation of Indians for a five-day lease signing period, to take place in September. Leases may be signed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12 through Sept. 15 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 16 at the Council chambers at the William Seneca Building in Irving. According to Adrian Stevens, Chairman of the SNI Administration and Finance Committee, SNI officials were not aware when they set the signing dates of Sept. 19 through 23 that the federal Department of Interior had chosen Sept. 16 as the final signing date. n Sept. 1, 1994: KILL BUCK — Thanks to the efforts of several members of the Kill Buck Volunteer Fire Department, Kill Buck will soon have its own post office again. The community has been without its own post office for over two years since the office at the former Kill Buck Store was closed by the United States Postal Service (USPS) in July of 1992. The Salamanca Post Office expanded service to accommodate Kill Buck customers, but many Kill Buck customers expressed disappointment and lobbied postal officials to have service returned to the community. n Sept. 3, 1994: SALAMANCA — Three Iroquois children are depicted in a painting that Carson Waterman recently completed for his friend John Collins. The work, unveiled Thursday (Sept. 1) at Tom Fenton’s soon-to-be-opened Red Garter Playhouse, involved a cooperative effort between the Collins and Waterman families. Collins, a lawyer from Buffalo, became acquainted with the Salamanca area through his late father who hunted and fished here, and through representing the interest of railroad
and ironworkers.
10 YEARS AGO n Sept. 3, 2009: SALAMANCA — The Seneca Nation of Indians may soon take another step toward more selfsufficiency for its members. According to published reports, Nation officials are considering establishing an independent school for Seneca youths. Although still in conceptual stages, Doug Hay, Salamanca City Central School District superintendent, said school officials have talked in recent months with SNI officials on the matter. “In conversations that we have had with the Seneca Nation of Indians Education Committee, the main reason they (SNI) want to start their own school is to allow them to infuse their Seneca language and culture into their program more than can be done in the public school setting,” Hay said. “They want to bring to Native American students their traditions and customs.” n Sept. 3, 2009: SALAMANCA — Stan Grochowina’s efforts to honor all Salamanca veterans is right on track. At a special meeting of the Salamanca City Central School District’s board of education held Aug. 26, Grochowina gave board members a positive report on the status of his project to purchase plaques displaying the names of Salamanca military veterans. Although not cheap, Grochowina said the generosity of local donors is making the project a reality. “So far I’ve raised $4,222.24 for this project,” Grochowina said. “Most of the money has come from donations from a lot of people in the community.” n Sept. 3, 2009: LITTLE VALLEY — Timothy S. Whitcomb was sworn last week as acting Cattaraugus County sheriff, capping a week of sorrow over the death of Sheriff Dennis B. John. “It’s odd to hear congratulations,” Acting Sheriff Whitcomb said after he was sworn in before county lawmakers, sheriff’s office employees and supporters. “I want to convey that I appreciate everyone’s support.”

Back in HC role, Marsh hopes to keep Titans rolling By Sam Wilson Sports Editor
FRANKLINVILLE — While the playbook might not look identical to last season’s, Jason Marsh hopes to provide as smooth a transition as possible for his Franklinville/ Ellicottville football players in his first season as the Titans’ head coach. Marsh and the players know each other from his three seasons as an F/E assistant, starting as a volunteer in 2016. And he has plenty of experience as a head coach, having served nine years in the top job at Salamanca. Now, he hopes to continue the success the Titans experienced under Chad Bartoszek, who went 41-16 in six years (37-12 since the merger) before leaving Ellicottville for his hometown of Salamanca this year. “Even the Franklinville guys, I only see them generally during football season and whatnot but I definitely know who they are and we have a pretty good relationship,” Marsh said of connecting with his players. “It’s good that I’m not a completely new face to them. I think that’s a pretty easy transition then.” For Marsh, returning to the head coaching job meant picking up some of the lessglamorous responsibilities he had forgotten. “A lot of the clerical stuff, getting back into doing all that stuff again, getting busses and doing all the ordering of equipment,” Marsh said his new head coaching duties. “That’s the main difference. The Xs and Os is generally the easy part, it’s all those other little things that become tedious.” F/E took a slight step back last year after four consecutive trips to New Era Field for the Section 6 championship game. The Titans went 5-4, but still finished the season in a different sort of championship
setting, winning the Chuck Funke Memorial Bowl Class C final, 27-14 over Portville. Now F/E returns 15 letterwinners, including 11 starters and nine seniors. Marsh hopes that varsity experience and a taste of winning will lead to improvement this season. “We were really young on the offensive line last year and then also last year we had an injury to a key player in (senior running back/ linebacker) Jake Peters,” Marsh said of 2018. “When we lost him, it set us back a little bit. But we had guys that stepped up and we knew on the offensive line that we had to play better. So that’s where — and I really think as the season wore on — we started to play a lot better on the offensive line.” F/E also saw development from Logan Frank, who returns at quarterback and defensive back as a junior. “We were starting a sophomore quarterback last year and his progress from Week 1 to the end of the season was tremendous,” Marsh said. “Logan Frank, you could watch him grow each week and his confidence from beginning to end was a world of difference. “The thing I think we’ll see more of is last year, Logan was doing a lot of learning, trying to pick up everything and I think it was a process of having the game slow down for him. Now I think he can build on that and that game is now going to be played at a different pace for him. Now he can work on being the leader out there. I think he has great leadership qualities and I think we’re going to see that out of a lot of our guys. Three other rising juniors — Clayton Rowland, Wyatt Chudy and Brett Kryniski — saw starting action as sophomores. “A lot of guys, they were new to varsity football and their heads were kind of spinning,” Marsh noted.
not a place for (Lucas). Logan Frank is a good player and I think we’re going to hear a lot of good things from him this year.”
“They were concentrating so much on their assignments and where they needed to be and whatnot. Now I think we’ll see those leadership skills come out in everybody.” Marsh said the team “definitely has a similar feel” to three years ago, when players like Brock Blecha, Griffin Chudy and Sam Erickson returned as second-year starters as juniors. But despite a high number of returning starters and letterwinners, the Titans aren’t a finished product. “There’s still going to be quite a bit of teaching because we are changing a few things with what we do. But it’s nice to have (experience). I think it increases our confidence. Our confidence should be at a different level because we do have experience. They’ve been in battles, they’ve been tested a little bit. They played in tight games. So I think for us that’s the biggest thing. We ended the season with a fair amount of confidence and at least a little bit of savvy.” Aside from the head coaching change, F/E’s staff remains essentially intact, with Chris Mendell running the defense and Mark Blecha the special teams. Bill Delity joined the staff coaching offensive line and will help with the junior varsity along with Scott Palmatier and Reed Mitrowski and Harley Butler helps the lines as a volunteer. In league play, F/E returns to Class D after a year at the
‘C’ level, playing against Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Randolph, Salamanca and defending state champion Clymer/Sherman Panama. Maple Grove was slated to return to the league, but will instead play eight-man football this season. Even with the merger, which has led to five winning seasons including four trips to the Section 6 Class D finals, Franklinville/Ellicottville has issues with depth. Marsh listed 31 players on his initial varsity roster. “I really think our numbers, I would like to see them higher,” Marsh acknowledged. “Probably most coaches do, but it’s definitely a concern. Our numbers are always a concern. I think this year we’re going to be in good shape, but we’re definitely concerned what our numbers are going to be like on down the road.” This season should also give Marsh a chance to coach his son, Lucas, a sophomore, for the first time in varsity football. The son is listed at quarterback (behind Frank) and defensive back. “He’ll be a guy that’s probably going to bounce around between JV and (varsity),” Jason Marsh said. “We don’t know if he can handle being the backup quarterback, hopefully we’ll never have to find out, so he’ll probably spend a lot of time playing JV quarterback. He’s gotta get reps and Logan’s a stud. There’s just
