Sample the best at ‘Taste of Ellicottville’ By Deb Everts Food lovers from all over the area and beyond will flock to the 34th Annual Taste of Ellicottville Saturday, Aug. 10 and Sunday, Aug. 11 to sample the mouthwatering goodies offered by more than 23 local food establishments. Whether they are connoisseurs of fine cuisine or people who just love to eat good food, hungry visitors can sample the best of Ellicottville’s fine restaurant menus from noon to 4 p.m. each day — rain or shine. Entrees, desserts, healthy choices and nonalcoholic drinks will be some of the featured choices. Barb Pump, project development manager for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, said the booths will be set up “cafe-style” on both sides of Monroe Street. Both ends, from Hughey Alley to Martha Street, will be closed off. Tables and seating will be out among the tents to provide a place for families of all ages and sizes to enjoy their tastings. Each restaurant’s signature dish will be sampled by judges in front of a live audience. According to Executive Director Brian McFadden, the judging and Chopped Competition, managed by Chef Dean Metzger from the Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, will take place at the Winery of Ellicottville Main Stage. The judging begins around noon on Saturday and awards will be presented afterward, the same day. This year’s Taste lineup includes Balloons Restaurant & Nightclub, John Harvard’s Brew House, Cupcaked Bakery, Dina’s, Dina’s at the Mont, Ellicottville Brewing Company, Ellicottville Distillery, Finnerty’s Taproom, The Gin Mill, Katy’s Café, Madigan’s, Monroe Street Brick & Brew, The Public House Ellicottville, Seneca Allegany Casino & Resort, Silver Fox Steakhouse, Steelbound Brewery & Distillery, West Rose (new, opening this fall, next door to Kazoo II), The Tee Bar, Tim & Bonnie’s Pizza, TOPS Markets, Villaggio, Watson’s Chocolates and The Winery of Ellicottville. Rock Autism Finnerty’s Golf Classic set for Aug. 24 Music Festival returning to Ellicottville Aug. 31 By Kellen M. Quigley

The second annual Rock Autism Music Festival will be back in Ellicottville on Aug. 31, but ﬁrst, a new golf tournament with the collaboration of Rock Autism and Finnerty’s Tap Room will hit the links. The inaugural Rock Autism Finnerty’s Golf Classic will kick off Aug. 24, beneﬁtting Rock Autism’s, Inc. and the Rock Autism Music Festival. Rock Autism has partnered with one of Ellicottville’s hidden gems, Finnerty’s Taproom, who is also a sponsor of Rock Autism, for this tournament. All proceeds from the event will go to the Rock Autism Multi-Media Vocational Program

and Rock Autism Music Festival. Participants will tee off at Elkdale Country Club at 3 p.m. on Aug. 24, but a full day of supporting this great cause is in

the works. Starting at noon, register at Finnerty’s Taproom, where there will be a one-hour open bar prior to golf. Enjoy drinks, lunch and

rafﬂes. Then, head down Route 242 to Elkdale Country Club at 2 p.m. to warm up your swing, practice your putts and visit before the tournament begins. The tournament is a four-man scramble format that will begin with a 3 p.m. shotgun start. Following nine holes of golf, head back to Ellicottville for dinner at Finnerty’s Taproom at 6 p.m. as well as the open bar for one hour. Finally, awards and prizes will be presented at 7:30 p.m. along with dessert. The cost is $100 per player. Entry fees must be returned to

It’s the second week of August, so it seems a little early to be mentioning Halloween. Or is it? Blueberry Day returning to Humphrey Aug. 10 Once again, the Humphrey Volunteer Fire Company is preparing for their annual Blueberry Day. It will be held at the ﬁre hall at 4591 Humphrey Road in Humphrey on Saturday, Aug. 10. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 11:30 a.m. This will consist of all-you-can-eat blueberry pancakes, or plain or chocolate chip if you wish, with real maple syrup, butter, sausage, orange juice, coffee and milk. At the recent annual meeting of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, the chamber ﬁlled openings for four board members. New to the board to serve a three-year term is Jessica Gilbert, owner of Ava Grace Fashions, located at 24 Washington St. in Ellicottville. “The chamber was fortunate to have several excellent new candidates, but ultimately Jessica’s proven track record in community service was the deciding factor for the nominating committee,” said Arleen Solly, Chamber President. The chamber is also happy to have three board members agree to stand for re-election for another threeyear term, including Peter Kreinheder, of Ellicottville Brewing Company; Jim Carls, of Dina’s; and

ECS NEWS Ellicottville School Board discusses Code of Conduct changes By Louisa Benatovich

On July 30, a public hearing preceding the Ellicottville Central School Board of Education meeting delineated the additions to the district’s Code of Conduct and Discipline Code. The additions, four points entitled “Expectations Regarding Care & Storage of Personal Belongings,” seek to decrease the carrying of backpacks around the school. Students, according to the Code, must keep personal belongings, including book bags, locked in a locker at all times. Any left unattended will be conﬁscated and searched for ownership and/or contents. From now on, bags will no longer be allowed in the hall, classrooms, cafeteria, or into restrooms. Exceptions to these new regulations may be granted for medical purposes. In the spirit of change, Superintendent Bob Miller addressed possible adjustments for the district in his report of the evening. One such item is a potential Ellicottville Central School app. Still in the researching phase, the app would be a home base for all school-related software, including Facebook and Twitter. Another item in the potential for the school is an ECS Foundation. Akin to a Sports or Music boosters, this organization of both alumni and community members would pride itself on fundraising for items the school might need. “It’s still in its conceptual phase,” said Miller, “but if implemented, the foundation would serve to ﬁll in for what our budget doesn’t cover.” Miller was also able to attend a Community Health and Improvement Plan summit. This county-based service works with Community Action, Olean General Hospital and other local organizations to make their services accessible to everyone.

Miller met with the group to ascertain ways the school can address food banks and mental health in the district, as well as how, precisely, the school fits into the outside lives of its community. In his report, Principal Erich Ploetz was proud to announce the success of the first Annual Summer Retreat. Held at the BOCES Ropes Course Lodge on July 12, the event was a brainstorming session for students from grades 7 through 12. “Topics such as student advisory and mental health awareness were discussed,” said Ploetz, “and student feedback will be utilized to include the student voice in the decisionmaking process at the secondary school.” Additionally, plans for striping and numbering the student section of the parking lot are underway. Seniors have until Aug. 9 to exercise senior privilege, after which all applications will be reviewed and spots assigned. In other business, some discussion was had over the implementation of Policy #3280 (Use of School Facilities, Materials, and Equipment) upon the request of board member Shana Chudy. The policy stipulates that school facilities, including the Ward, may be used on Sundays for Jazz Band and Jazz Chorus rehearsals only. After Chudy questioned why open gym could not be a possibility, all board members offered their input. Board member Carl Calarco said there are a safety and security component. “One more day the school is open is another chance for something to go wrong.” Miller also explained the difficulties with cleaning the space before school on Monday morning. Open gyms would require some ECS staff to work overtime to prepare it for the rest of the week, and mistakes could be made, resulting in injury.

Meganne Chapman, a 2019 Ellicottville Central School graduate, was recently chosen to receive one of ten state scholarships awarded annually by the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs (NYSAAF). Selection criteria were considered in the selection of award winners, including scholastic achievement, community service and a written essay based on fair experience. Chapman has been active in Cattaraugus County 4-H for many years in the cattle and domestic department. She is the daughter of Stacey and Tim Chapman of Cattaraugus. unprecedented success with its Boot Camp Program. Fitness levels varied as did gender, age and home towns of each participant. But, even if a participant “came in hot,” we got the job done. However, as seasons change so do schedules, and ﬁtness can take a back seat. So, how do you maintain your commitment to ﬁtness? Here’s a simple truth you already know: No amount

of motivational posters will help you if you are not in the right place in your head, if you push yourself too hard, never let off steam and fail to manage your expectations. This begs the question: how do you get to that right place inside your head? Well, there are a few tips: Integrate it into your lifestyle The easiest way to stay committed to ﬁtness, stay

healthy and ﬁt without constantly getting off track, is to integrate it into your daily life and make it something you do by default like brushing your teeth in the morning. After all, it’s just as much of an investment in your health. Jump right back into a new class At Core Performance, we are constantly updating our class schedule to meet the needs of our clients

and class participants. You can find our updated class schedule on our Facebook site as well as in our studio. All classes are designed for every fitness level and are offered as early as 5 a.m. in the morning. Niagara Frontier Country Club professional Matt Clark led the winning team to the 2019 Ellicottville Library Pro Am title in a two-best-ball format on Monday at Double Black Diamond at Holiday Valley. Clark’s team included Aaron Rotella, Scott Adams and Pete Lovering and scored a 121. Clark tied with Mike Sweazy (Wildwood Country Club), Michael

O’Connor (Kahkwa Country Club) and Kirk Stauffer (Pennhills Club) for the top professional, each carding a 72. Paul Sanders (Ridgemont CC) led the second-place team with Jake Swan, Pat Gerrie and Jake Yartz, scoring a 126. Grant pushes Great Valley basketball court project closer to reality By Sam Wilson

When school closes and young athletes go home, they soon may be able to practice their basketball games at the Great Valley Town Hall. An outdoor basketball court project at the town hall, initially proposed by Shana Chudy, a Great Valley parent, received approval for a $5,000 grant from the Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau. That grant, if used by the end of the year, along with online fundraiser money and donations from local businesses, could make an outdoor court a reality soon, pending town board approval. A GoFundMe fundraiser has additionally raised nearly $700 as of Tuesday, Aug. 6. “The Catt County Youth Bureau approved us for a $5,000 grant, reimbursable, so we have to spend the

money and then they would give it back,” Chudy said Monday. “Then I was able to put together a GoFundMe and I got $700 in donations through that. So about 57 (hundred) and today actually a few minutes ago, got a formal written donation from Gernatt’s, which is the gravel company here and they’re going to give us 350, or half basically, of the gravel that we’ll need for the foundation.” Chudy said her involvement with the youth basketball program in Ellicottville sparked the idea to put a court in locally for Great Valley residents. “Obviously my kiddos play a lot of (basketball), but I also do a lot in general with just the Ellicottville travel and youth basketball,” she said, “so we have a ton of Great Valley youth that obviously play and love it and (wanted) a place for them to play. So just in my

Rick thanked all the contractors for their work over the years and all the friends who helped to get everything ready during the ﬁnal days. “Just look around. It speaks volumes,” he said. “We did it. Art and music meet at Grifﬁs Sculpture Park Summer Festival

Music and art lovers will have the opportunity to celebrate a day of creativity at the 7th annual Griffis Sculpture Park Summer Festival on Sunday, Aug. 11 from 2-7 p.m. Headlining the festival is the all-star band, Dead Phish Funk with CRiTT & Friends. Led by Buffalo native Eric Crittenden, the band will get the crowd moving and grooving with songs from The Grateful Dead, Phish and tunes from the funk genre. Some of Western New York’s top musicians will join Crittenden on stage making it a day to remember. Funktional Flow, a funk jam band that played at the festival in 2016, will be also performing. Hailing from Buffalo, the group is a multi-genre quintet heavily rooted in rock and reggae, with a funk foundation. Joining the musical lineup will be Grassroots rockers, PA Line, playing their soulful tunes. The Buffalo-based band brings a unique brand of alternative folk music. Performers from the Springville Center of the Arts will also be participating in some artistic performances throughout the day. “This was the brainchild of then Board Chairman Doug Sitler and myself,” said Executive Director Nila Griffis. “We were a part of our original concerts at Griffis Sculpture Park and wanted to see these wonderful events return to Griffis Sculpture Park.” The event will also feature a children’s activities tent that will be

Bring the whole family to watch the performances and listen to music. While at the park, seek out the approximate 250 sculptures of Larry Griffis, Jr. and other international artists residing along the trails in the woods and fields of the more than 400acre park, making it one of the largest and oldest sculpture parks in the country. Griffis said this summer event draws people into the park who might not have otherwise visited. The event has created more of an awareness about the unique sculpture park and all it has to offer. “We have visitors from all over the region attend and it is so great to see,” she said. “It’s also a great ground to promote our annual ‘Night Lights’ event that begins in the fall.”

The festival will take place at 6902 Mill Valley Road, in East Otto, on top of the hill at the Mill Valley site of the park. Festival-goers must be able to endure a 10-minute walk uphill to the festival site, however, there will also be a shuttle. Tickets can be purchased online at eventbrite.com. Presale admission tickets are $15. Tickets will be $20 on the day of the show for adults, and children 12 years old and under are free. Gates open at noon. The Ashford Hollow Foundation owns and operates the Griffis Sculpture Park and the Essex Arts Center in Buffalo. Established in 1969, the foundation has been celebrating its 50-year anniversary this year with a number of wonderful events to mark the momentous occasion.
