Holiday Valley announces $3.3 million in upgrades

In the heat of summer it’s hard to think “snow,” but officials at Holiday Valley already have the white stuff in mind as work continues to prepare the resort for the upcoming ski season.

Holiday Valley recently announced it is undergoing $3.3 million in upgrades for the 2019-20 winter season. Dennis Eshbaugh, president of Holiday Valley, said the skiers and riders of all ages and abilities will see improvements that will make their visit more enjoyable.

“As an independent resort, we are very proud of what we have been able to accomplish in our 62-year history,” he said. “Together with this year’s projects, we have reinvested over $135 million in the resort over the past 25 years.”

This year’s improvements to the resort include expanded snowmaking, a new groomer, glade improvements, a new website and a redesigned cafeteria.

“Holiday Valley has the most snowmaking guns available in Western New York,” said Jane Eshbaugh, director of marketing. “The new guns we are putting in this year are not automated, at this point, but will be part of the automated system in the future.”

The resort’s powerful snowmaking system was expanded with 107 new HKD low energy Impulse snow guns. These were installed on the

Ellicottville Steelbound to host Subabrew event this weekend

After little more than a year in operation, Steelbound Brewery & Distillery in Ellicottville is ready to release another new brew this summer.

This Sunday, Aug. 25, Steelbound of Ellicottville, located on Route 219 across from Tim Hortons, will be holding a special Subaru Car Show and Canning Day to unveil the brewery’s newest batch: Subabrew DDH Double IPA. “We took a picture of a fourpack of the cans, and within eight hours, 45,000 people viewed it,” owner Bill Bursee said. “It was so popular from the picture of a four-pack, I can’t imagine what will happen when all these Subaru fanatics come out.”

Starting at 9 a.m., Subaru drivers and beer lovers in general are invited come down and join in the process of canning this juicy New England style double. Fresh four packs of the beer will be available the moment they come off the line.

So stop on out, bring out your Subaru and enjoy some fresh craft beer.

“Steelbound (in Ellicottville) is doing phenomenal,” Bursee said.

“In July, we were up 110% over last year’s July. In May and June, we were up over 45% both those months, and this month we are looking at another 100% over last year, so I don’t think we could be doing any better.”

Now, with 351 automated snowguns and almost 800 total snowmaking guns, Holiday Valley has the largest and most powerful HKD automated snowmaking system on the East Coast. Automation has the advantage of quick startups and shutdowns, so even if favorable snowmaking temperatures exist for just a couple of hours, the system can make snow efficiently.

In addition, the automated snowmaking system has weather stations that monitor temperature and humidity, so the guns can automatically and individually adjust to changes. The result is a greater quantity and better quality of snow made, using less energy.

A new Pisten Bully 600 winch cat grooming machine has been added to the grooming crew’s fleet. The machine has a blade for moving large quantities of snow and a tiller to smooth out the surface like other

groomers, but it also has a rotating arm with a winch cable that attaches to an anchor point at the top of the slope.

This allows the winch cat to groom uphill on steeper terrain resulting in a smoother, more consistent snow surface.

A thorough cleaning out has made the four glades and several tree trails more fun than ever. With the goal of creating healthier tree stands, better tree skiing and more access to the powder, crews have been smoothing out the forest floor by filling in gaps and sharp angles and doing light pruning to open up the woods a bit.

Additionally, the Mountainside Grill, Holiday Valley’s main cafeteria, has been redesigned for easier access, better traffic flow and a fresh new menu.

Jane Eshbaugh said redesigning the cafeteria will improve on its visibility, traffic flow and the products offered.

“We’re at the point right now where we’re waiting for a few key elements to make sure it’ll actually happen this year,” she said.

“We’re pretty sure it’s going to happen, but

the timing is going to be very tight because we have weddings and conferences going on, then the ski season is coming, so we don’t have a lot of time.”

HolidayValley. com will also have a whole new look and improved user-friendly e-commerce. According to Eshbaugh, the new website is expected to launch sometime in October.

Holiday Valley, New York State’s most visited ski resort, has become a leader in the ski industry and ranks among the favorites of skiers in the East.

Located along Route 219, in Ellicottville, the resort features 60 slopes and trails, 13 lifts, three base lodges, slope-side lodging and dining, conference facilities, an 18-hole golf course, a tree top aerial adventure park, a mountain coaster and a summer pool complex.

Holiday Valley to host Tailgates & Tee Times Friday

With the official start of football season nearly here, the nine-hole “Tailgates and Tee Times” with an NFL theme is scheduled for Aug. 23 at 5 p.m.

Two-player teams of men, women or mixed will compete in a two-person scramble including a closet to the pin contest as well as kick, throw, catch and

Ellicottville LIVING Tour launches tour of resort homes Sept. 14

In its eighth year of putting on upscale home tours in the area, PDM Marketing & Media, Inc. has announced that there will be an expansion of the concept in September with the launch of the Ellicottville LIVING Tour.

“We have had such success with our twelve previous tours, helping property owners rent or sell their living spaces, that we decided Ellicottville was ripe for this program,” said Paul D. ECS NEWS & SPORTS Ellicottville school board discusses district’s state aid status

By Ginna Hensel The Ellicottville Central School Board of Education began its Aug. 13 meeting with a public hearing to discuss the comprehensive student attendance policy.

The hearing reviewed the attendance policy objectives to ensure student success.

In his report, Superintendent Bob Miller updated the board that the school is encouraging sports teams, including both travel leagues and school-affiliated teams, to stay off of the sports fields. Miller reported that the fields have “taken a beating” over the past few years due to over use of the fields and intense weather.

Next, Miller told the board that the Aims Web Data Breach only compromised the names and birthdays of students. He said that several schools were affected.

Miller then updated the board on the school’s aid.

This has been an ongoing conversation at several board meetings. Miller said that Ellicottville receives the lowest rate of New York state aid allowed by law.

That, combined with the low tax cap, often leaves Ellicottville tight on money.

Miller also pointed out that Ellicottville relies on tuition students.

Board Member Shana Chudy asked if Ellicottville gets the same amount of aid per kid as their home school would receive. Miller explained that the aid comes in by numbers. Ellicottville receives a certain amount of aid per student even if they come from a lower-income school district.

“Why haven’t we written a letter to Cumo saying, ‘Hey we are servicing 100 of their students, why can’t we have their rates?’” Chudy asked.

Miller ensured the board that he is meeting with state legislators to discuss the lack of aid.

High School Principal Erich Ploetz added in on the “hot topic of tuition students” that he had been conducting interviews for the past couple of weeks of students wishing to enter Ellicottville’s middle/high school.

Elementary Principal

Maren Bush updated the board on the success of the summer peer tutoring program. Headed by Dr. Marie Davis, 18 children attended the reading program where they expanded their academic and social skills.

Athletic and Performing Arts Committee met and they revised athletic policy to the athletic and extracurricular policy.

Miller said the changes “creates a generic, nonconfusing policy for administration and parents and students.”

They plan to review and refine the eligibility policy.

Miller said he feels the need to “tweak the policy a little bit and move to make it a fluid and concise policy.”

and reminders that work best for me. My intention is to share them here so that anyone who is meant to receive and benefit from this information will find their way to it.

Intentions have no limits — Imagine the changes that can take place within your body as you begin to consciously give intention to positive choices such as creating a healthier lifestyle.

And it doesn’t stop with you, since your energy has an impact on those around you.

Intentions are expansive — Intentions aren’t to be confused with goals: They are about who you want to be, what you wish to

contribute to the world, and how you choose to touch the lives of others.

Example: I intend to show acts of kindness today, opening myself to any possibility to bring joy into the life of another.

Setting intentions will help you to get out of your head — Voicing intentions will take your mind off of your problems and perceived limitations.

Instead, it will place your focus on something that will have a positive impact on your life. Clearly stating how you intend to feel today instead of wishing that you felt better puts the power of change in your own hands.

Example: I intend to live in gratitude for all that I have and all that I am, allowing joy and love to fill my heart and positive energy to fill my body.

Setting intentions opens your eyes to things you may have otherwise missed — Do you ever go through the day so absorbed in thought that you don’t notice much of what’s going on around you? Observing the little wonders of the world provides many benefits and can shift your perspective in an instant.

Fire engulfed Ellicottville Town Hall 50 years ago

Fifty years ago this week, a fire struck a blow to the Ellicottville community when the 1830 Town Hall on West Washington Street was engulfed in flames.

It was the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 22, 1969, when one of Cattaraugus County’s most historic buildings was seemingly damaged beyond repair when flames originating in a lower hall swept through the then 139-year-old building, which was once the county courthouse.

Town and Village Clerk Charles E. Lawler called the fire department from his second-floor office after being warned by a 15-year-old boy who saw the fire through the building’s front door.

Lawler quickly fled from the building on a fire escape. Unfortunately, the door of the town safe, containing town and village records was left open.

Luckily, a near-miracle occurred soon after.

Firemen who arrived with great speed directed large amounts of water through windows into Lawler’s office. Apparently, a stream of water hit the safe’s door and knocked it shut, saving the town and village’s records.

The floor did not collapse, and entering the room with firemen by means of the fire escape, Lawler removed the most valuable records — wet, but still legible. However, office equipment including a new adding machine and a typewriter were lost.

Hard-hit but also sharing in unexpected good fortune was the Ellicottville Historical Society. Its large stock of irreplaceable historical items was in a room on the west side of the first floor of the building.

Flames which originated in the main hall, just outside the room, swept up the stairs and climbed through partitions, burning the roof off the building, but did not enter the historical society room. Tons of water seeped down from the second floor.

Miss Bula Johnson, the town historian, said the Historial Society’s 13-star flag was wet and smokestained but an effort would be made to restore it. An old handmade cradle loaned by Richard Bohall, of Steamburg, was saved, through soaked, she said.

Glass cases of treasured historical items were carried from the society’s room and stored in a vacant building, including a muzzle-loading musket, powder horns carried in the Revolutionary War and the French and Indian War, Indian artifacts, old dishes and a great many pictures.

Police Chief Charles A. Tretheweysaid he would start an immediate investigation into the cause of the fire later that night. He said he had left his secondfloor office in the building only about half an hour before the fire was discovered and noted nothing wrong at the time.

Lawler later reported that Mike McAndrew, 15, who had been shooting baskets in the play area adjoining the town building, at the northwest corner of Washinton and Jefferson streets, saw flames through the double front doors of the building. He ran into the building, past the fire, dashed upstairs and notified Lawler of the fire.

Lawler said he came down the stairs at the rear of the building, and looking toward the front saw the fire which, he said, appeared to be coming from back of a small folding table which had been leaned against the wall on the west side of the hall near

the front door. It could have been coming from the partition back of the folding table, he said.

Lawler ran back upstairs and called the fire department. By that time, he said, smoke was billowing up the open stairway in such clouds that he was unable to descend the stairs. Crossing into the second-floor Boy Scout room on the west side of the building, he climbed through a window onto the fire escape on the front of the building.

Mrs. Joseph Halloran who was helping with a book sale in front of the Ellicottville Memorial Library, across Jefferson Street, said, “I saw Mr. Lawler coming down the fire escape, then I saw flames coming out through the front door of the building.”

Ellicottville firemen summoned equipment from Little Valley, Great Valley and Killbuck. Pumpers were stationed at hydrants about the village, and huge amounts of water were thrown on the building through fire hoses on all sides of the building and from Little Valley’s aerial truck.

Crowds watched as huge clouds of black smoke billowed from the building and made a black pillar extending hundreds of feet into toe air. Flames devoured the roof and burned up through the large belfry, which appeared ready to fall at times. But flames failed to topple the sturdy old brick walls.

The old courthouse, built on land donated by the Holland Land Co., replaced one built in 1820, which burned in the winter of 1829. The building which burned in 1969 was sufficiently completed by January 1830 so that a term of County Court could be held in it. On March 25, 1831, the supervisors appropriated an additional $1,200 to complete the building.

It served the county until the county seat was moved to Little Valley in May 1868. It then was sold to the Town of Ellicottville for $1,000 and has been a town building since.

being distributed as far as Rochester, Syracuse and Binghamton. He said their liquor will begin distributing in October as well.

At the flagship site in Ellicottville, Bursee said they still have people coming in who thought the site was just a brewery and are excited to see the restaurant and bar.

“I think it’s a large part of why we’ve grown so drastically the past couple months,” he said. “We have a big following of people coming from Amherst, Williamsville and Clarence.

It’s incredible.”

Additionally, Bursee said they’ve been getting a lot of campers in from nearby campgrounds.

In Erie County, the Steelbound name known so well in Ellicottville will soon be a household word in Springville when Bursee expands his brewery and restaurant business with a second location this fall.

Located in the old Robinson Knife Factory that stood on the site at 243 West Main St. about a century ago, Steelbound Brewery & Restaurant of Springville will occupy the former Papa Jake’s Saloon that was housed within the factory.

Last week, Steelbound of Springville hosted a fundraiser event for SYI and The Club, offering a sneak peek inside the renovated restaurant before its official opening in the coming months.

“It’s not really about us, it’s about SYI and The Club,” Bursee said last week. “As far as us, our restaurant is ready to go.”

Unfortunately, Bursee said they’ve been having trouble getting their liquor license from New York state, which is a primary cause of delaying the opening. “We

can’t complete it without it,” he added.

According to Bursee, the new brewery is smaller than Ellicottville’s building by about 4,000-square feet at 7,200. There will be seating for about 280 people whereas the Ellicottville facility seats over 300.

Bursee said the building at the second location didn’t require extensive renovation, but it’s going to require all new equipment and all new seating. He said when patrons come in, the space is going to feel like a brewery with chalkboards and corrugated metal.

“It’s simple. It’s what I do. Construction is easy for me,” Bursee said. “Getting ready and getting our staff ready to go and work and getting the stuff to the table so we can sell it is the easiest part.” He said he plans to employ 25 to 30 people.

According to Bursee, the Springville location is going to offer a lot of things the Ellicottville location does not. He said one of the big things they’re trying to put together right now is to have a Sunday Brunch every week.

The Ellicottville location offers a variety of beers, from stouts to ales, with their most popular brew being the Last Minute IPA. Like the Ellicottville facility, the Springville Steelbound location will also feature a dinner menu.

“We’re excited about Springville. We can’t wait to get that thing open,” he said. “But we’re also excited about all the progress we’re making in Ellicottville as well.”

Summer Defining hardscape and how to use it DIY landscape designers can heed certain tips to make the most of hardscape features on their properties.

Choose materials.

As with many landscaping projects, homeowners must first determine what types of additions they would like on their properties.

Common hardscape features include patios, decks, walkways of pavers or bricks, and retaining walls.

Hardscape elements can be functional or simply decorative features that add whimsy to the yard.

Choose a theme.

The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together

can take away from the overall appeal.

The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once.

This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

Think about the purpose.

Hardscaping can look good but also serve key purposes. Pebbles or gravel can mitigate trouble areas that don’t grow grass or plant life well. Retaining walls hold back soil in yards with sharply inclined hills. Mulch can set perimeters around trees and shrubs, as well as planting beds. Fencing, another form of hardscaping, is essential for establishing property boundaries and adding privacy.

Consult a professional.

While many hardscaping additions can be handled by novices, large-scale projects, such as patios and decking, can change the grading of the yard.

Hardscaping refers to the elements in a landscape that aren’t living, such as paths, walls and fences.

Ellicottville village board discusses joint Town, Village Water System

The August meeting of the Ellicottville Village Board opened with good news. The sales tax check for approximately $105,000.00 from Cattaraugus County had been received.

“This revenue stream accounts for 45.4% of our budget, where property tax amounts to 28%,” said Mayor John Burrell.

Before the mayor’s report, a brief executive session was held to discuss work done on the water system over at the Sun-Up Mobile Home Park. After the executive session, the board approved one third of the cost of recent water meters installed amounting to $600.

The grant for a skate park in the Village Park has been officially filed with the NYS Parks and Recreation Department.

There was a meeting with Mark Reinhardt to talk about his company that provides municipalities with water and sewer billing. There was a meeting regarding drainage that has become problematic over on Madison Street Extension in addition to parking concerns.

There was a conference call with Town/Village Engineer Niles Pierson to discuss the two issues. The village board approved allowing parking only on one side of Madison Street Extension, to be determined by Pierson, as to which side yields greater parking spots.

Regarding the joint Town and Village Water System, the town is holding their public hearings and almost all of the legal work is complete. The rate schedules and intermunicipal agreements

need to be completed.

Burrell has asked for more time so that the board can review the IMAs and rates before final approvals.

Two officials were sent from State Sen. Kristen Gillibrand’s (D-NY) office to discuss how they can help villages and towns.

The office wants the village to know they are here for it and to use them as a resource.

The Downtown Revitalization Initiative Grant that the town and village had worked diligently on was awarded to Niagara Falls.

Ellicottville is going to evaluate the options on applying next year.

There was a WNY Mayor’s Meeting with Freeport mayor Robert T. Kennedy, President of NYCOM. He has pledged to do all he can for Upstate New York.

During the Planning Report, Trustee Spencer Murray brought up a concern regarding the pathway to opening businesses in the village. He said he feels that the process is too complicated and it needs to be streamlined. The mayor and Trustee Greg Cappelli echoed the same sentiments and feel that these issues need to be addressed in the Comprehensive Plan.

In the Engineer’s Report, it was said the Maybee Alley 6-inch water line project is complete and running smoothly. The village got a lot out of this project as Dina’s paid for all of the materials while the village supplied the time and labor.

The first installment of roughly $150,000 will finally be received from the NYSERDA Grant.

This is the grant that allowed for the formation of an Engineering

Department and it was on a reimbursement basis.

It was noted that cleaning at the North Well has been completed.

The board approved the current summer intern to continue working remotely from RIT computer labs for 15-20 hours a week while in school.

“Everyone is very impressed with the work and level of understanding he has of our system,” Burrell said.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, it was brought up that the village was not cleaned up very well after the Taste of Ellicottville and Murray was asked to address it.

There was a Fall Festival Organizational Meeting with representatives from the police, fire and emergency service departments in attendance.

There was discussion on the local garbage law and the need to revamp it as it’s very much outdated.

The board approved the purchase of Weebly add on with the website so Water and Sewer funds can be collected from a cellular device. As of right now the program only accepts online payments from a desktop, and with most wanting to pay from a phone there have been many complaints. This option by sharing the cost with the town has actually made it less expensive with a greater added value of the program.

Finally, the board reiterated that the Village Justice Court officially ceased operations as of July 31.

The next meeting of the Ellicottville Village Board is scheduled for Sept.

16 at 6 p.m at the Town/ Village Hall.

Ladies ‘Wine and Nine’ back at Holiday Valley Sept. 4

The second annual 9-hole Ladies “Wine and Nine” scramble will take place Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. The format is a two-player scramble plus a closest to the pin contest.

Cost $40 per person for members, $50 per person non-members. Covers green fees,

cart, wine, appetizers and prizes. Last year’s Wine and Nine was the first tournament for many players, and they all had a memorable time.

Town of Great Valley thanks locals for support

Town Supervisor Dan Brown said Ken Ziccarelli, of Gernatt Gravel, has helped foster a great relationship between the town and Gernatt over the years. Brown said the Zicarellis were also instrumental in helping get the playground built, as well as arranging for a donation from Gernatt for $25,000 for the project.
