EVL Trail Runs return to Holiday Valley this Sunday

By Kellen M. Quigley Some of the area’s toughest runners will gather Sunday, July 21 at Holiday Valley’s Mountain Sports Center for the annual EVL Trail Races.

These 4- and 9-mile trail running races utilize resort and state lands for the traditional trail running races, which began to attract the toughest of the tough since 2003.

Participants from several surrounding states come to Ellicottville where Holiday Valley will once again send runners deep into technical trail running territory.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. on race-day at the Holiday Valley Mountain Sports Center where raceday registration is welcome, but at a slightly higher rate. However, no one will be turned away to compete.

The 9-mile race starts at 9:30 a.m. and the 4-mile course starts at 10. Please use your judgement when entering the long course. Ample fitness and trail running experience is required, so walkers are not permitted on the long course due to its duration.

The 4-mile route is a great way to test the waters and experience the thrill of the chase up and down the mountain. It’s a one-lap race that climbs the mountain and uses single track trails that hide no secrets of the tight-twisty trails we love so much featuring one water station.

This course also welcomes walkers.

The 9-mile course is for experienced runners that test their fitness on single track and technical terrain.

descent back to the finish line sharing the same start and finish as the 4-mile course.

Both courses feature everything from gravel access road starts up the mountain, tight technical single track trails that utilize resort and state land property and the infamous flow-trail downhill that traverses the mountain to the finish. Three water stations, some self-serve, on the long course provide ample resources for the demands at hand.

Runners will have an early exit point if they are not up to the task by around mile 3.5. Long course entrants not up for the terrain will be redirected to the finish at this point. Time limit for the 9-mile course re-directs any entrants that take more than 45 minutes to get to mile 3.5 to proceed back down the mountain. Please use your judgement.

Post-race party, awards and athletic stories abound as runners share their experiences

during the annual EVL Trail Runs.

Awards will include the overall best finisher for men, women and masters categories in each distance. There will also be top-3 finisher awards for each distance for under 19, age 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and up.

The first 300 participants are guaranteed a swank finisher medal proving they do not fear the mountain. A beautifully crafted 3D medal including the current race logo is sure to become a collectors item.

For many, summertime is the opportunity to destress and let loose after ten months of school.

These humid, schoolless weeks also bring about a lack of routine and, unfortunately, summer is the time where new skills acquired during the school year gather dust on the back shelves of the mind.

This year, Ellicottville Central School is battling this much-dreaded “Summer Slide” in a brand-new summer tutoring program.

Thanks to a grant from the Rotary Club of Ellicottville, the program is able to run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the elementary school at no cost.

From 9 a.m. to noon., 18 rising 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders play with puppets, keep picture journals, make posters, create timelines and engage in other fun activities designed to extend their thinking about what they read.

“Our hope is to help students avoid the ‘Summer Slide,’ or the loss of reading skills over the summer vacation,” says Dr. Marie Davis, resident Reading Specialist. “Especially emergent or ‘new’ readers who have just gotten ‘on their feet,’ so to speak.”

Along with Leanne Pfeffer and Vonni Dickinson, Dr. Davis works with her beloved students 1-on-1, in pairs or even in small groups.

“Our students are pros: showing up strong and ready to read well and work hard for us,” she said. “It is absolutely fantastic to see them ‘take off’ as readers.

There is nothing better!”

Davis said she is a reading teacher because she loves working with young children to become readers. She said it’s a perfect fit and cannot imagine doing any other work.

“My classroom is a safe space where students can learn and grow.,” she said. “I get to know each child well and try to provide support to that individual person.

them carefully and teach according to the needs of each child. I am grateful to be a part of their journeys.”

Summers are hard for Davis because, as she explained, there is an extended period of time that she doesn’t see her students.

Although vacation is nice, after a week or two, she said she’s ready to return to the classroom.

“The summer tutoring program is helpful to students who will benefit from extra support with their reading and writing, but also to me personally because it allows me to see them and share in their summer adventures,” Davis said.

“We can be creative and read and write just for fun!”

“It’s difficult to sum up how amazing and dedicated Dr. Davis is in just a few words,” said Beth Nelthrope.

When her family came to Ellicottville two years ago, Nelthrope said her kids struggled to some degree with writing and/or reading.

They all needed help in different areas. Since then, Davis has worked with them and inspires them to want to improve their skills, Nelthrope said.

“All of them absolutely adore her,” she said. “Her selfless dedication and truly kind soul touch our family daily. She goes above and beyond as a teacher and mentor for her students and their families.”

Nelthrope said Davis has a way of motivating children to take pride in their work and want to do well can’t be taught in any education class. She said Davis’s kind, dedicated soul radiates into her teaching and the children feel that positive energy.

“My family will always have a special place in our hearts and feel blessed that we can have such an incredible woman helping to mold our young minds,” Nelthrope said of Davis.

“She is an inspiration and deserves the utmost praise.”

None of this summer reading magic, however, would be possible without the Rotary Club.

“The Rotary Club of Ellicottville has been supportive from the first day I reached out to them,” said

Davis. “They care for our students’ well-being above all else. They truly are an invaluable resource in this community.”

Davis said she is thankful to the Rotary for making the program possible and encouraging her to realize this dream. She said parents have also been entirely supportive, driving children to and from tutoring, adjusting their work schedules to get them there, and working hard with their children at home.

“Maren Bush, Elementary Principal, has given her full support to our project — realizing that reading over the summer is crucial to students’ successes and lending her help along the way,” she added.

Thanks to Tina Barrett, Greg Cappelli, and the multitudes of other Rotarians in the Ellicottville community and beyond.

Crucial skills are being fortified in students for whom, typically, reading hasn’t come quite as easily.

E-bike rentals now available at Holiday Valley

Holiday Valley recently purchased eight Rossignol electric assist, or e-bikes, and will begin renting them this Friday, July 19 at Sky High Adventure Park.

An e-bike allows the rider to shift into three different power modes to assist with uphill climbing.

Prices are $40 for a 2-hour rental, $55 for a 3-hour rental and $15 for each additional hour. Helmets included in the rental price.

Holiday Valley’s e-bike trail begins at the Sky High Adventure Park Harness Shop and uses service roads and trails to go up through the resort, across the top and back down a ski slope.

Riders are given a map and an introduction to the operation of the bike.

E-bike riders still have to pedal and the bikes allow them to choose the amount of power they need to zip up the hills

and cruise over tough terrain in eco, trail or boost mode settings. Speed is controlled by pedaling, like a regular bike, but it feels really powerful and the bike accelerates easily.

That’s the reason everyone

from newbie to hardcore riders end up with a big smile on their face when they try an e-bike.

Bikes are available for rent from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with the last 2-hour rental going out at 3 p.m.

Ellicottville’s Lowry is ASP’s Artist in Residence next week

Singer and guitarist Will Lowry, a native of Ellicottville, will be performing in Allegany State Park’s “Artist in Residence” program again this year.

Lowry is a skilled guitarist with a unique acoustic style. He will be playing classic cover and folk songs as well as original compositions.

On Wednesday at 6 p.m., the program will be held at the new Seneca Cultural Center in Salamanca.

Then on Friday, July 26, he will play at 7:30 p.m. at the park’s Quaker Amphitheater.

Lowry began is his musical career in his hometown of Ellicottville, where he learned folk and rock styles, playing both acoustic and electric guitar.

He spent time playing in local bars before moving to Boston, Mass., where he studied classical guitar. In 1979, he recorded his first album, entitled “Mystery.”

The “Artist in Residence” program runs throughout the summer at the park. Lowry will perform Monday through Friday, July 22-26.

Ellicottville Village Board bans short-term rentals

At the last regular meeting of the Ellicottville Village Board, the matter regarding short-term rentals in the village was addressed.

The board approved declaring a negative declaration under SEQRA and the Zoning Code Amendment with minor changes, including that the Residential Mobile Home District would allow short term rentals.

The one part that was most controversial is that no short term rentals will not be allowed in the Village Residential District, which remained the same.

“I chose my community and moving forward with efforts to attract more full time residents and protect the current residents,” said Spencer Murray, who prefaced that statement saying he had actually been against banning short term rentals to begin with. “I want to help keep the village the way it is.”

Greg Cappelli said that this amendment helps to maintain the integrity of the village and is in line with projects and grants for downtown revitalization. Full-time residents are the ones who frequent the shops and restaurants Monday through Friday and they want to attract more going forward, he said.

“Not many communities are taking a hard stand on the short term rental debate,” said Cappelli.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, the Extreme Winter Recovery Aid of $3,495.52 has been reinstated by NYS. The Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant presentation went very well. Mayor John Burrell said he is extremely happy with the village’s grant writer’s presentation. All of the questions answered by the village board were concise and clear with the direction Ellicottville wants to go in. The board will hear the results sometime in November 2019.

There was another meeting with the Tony Hawk Foundation regarding a Skate Park in the Village Park. The grant writer will be working on a $250,000 grant from the State

Park System.

“The project has really picked up steam,” said Burrell.

There will be a Regional Trail Meeting in Little Valley. With the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation showing interest in a Regional Trail System the local municipalities and groups involved in creating these trails are meeting. They will be working on an outline for an intermunicipal agreement and potential shared services agreement for said regional trail.

There will also be a meeting for the Passenger Railroad Advocacy Program.

There is renewed interest in a potential WNY passenger rail line that would have a stop in Ellicottville. There is no timeline on this project as it is in the preliminary stages.

The mayor asked the village trustees to start brainstorming revenue streams, as the last couple of years have seen excess spending. The majority of the spending was spent in engineering, which has still yet to be recouped from the reimbursement of the engineering grant the town and village were awarded. With the new joint Town and Village Water and Sewer systems, water rates are expected to increase but sewer rates will drop. The smaller businesses that do not consume a lot of water will see a drop in their water bills.

The final work on the baseball diamond was expected to be complete by the end of the week. There still needs to be a black vinyl chain link fence installed in front of the dug-outs to protect the athletes. The Sexual Harassment Training sessions are complete and there were approximately 80 people in attendance for the two sessions. The next sessions are yet to be scheduled.

The Joint Water District project is nearly complete the Public Hearings were expected to be held by the Town Board this month.

Town/Village Engineer Niles Pierson advised that a decision would most likely be made in August.

The next meeting of the Ellicottville Village Board will be Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Village Hall.

West Valley Demonstration Project

A deactivation and decommissioning crew used ingenuity to develop a conveyor system to safely remove material containing asbestos from inside a building at the West Valley Demonstration Project.

Workers used the conveyor system to get rid of about 56,000 pounds of plaster containing asbestos material from the walls of a control room on the fourth floor of the Main Plant Process Building. They are clearing away asbestos material to prepare the structure for demolition.

According to spokesman Joseph Pillittere, the crew helped design, test and build the conveyor system to further improve safety and limit contact with asbestos material during the project. Drawing from lessons learned from previous work, the team built the system with readily-available equipment.

“This team took an issue and turned it into an opportunity by putting their knowledge into practice,” WVDP Federal Project Director Dan Sullivan said. “The safe and compliant disposition of asbestos-containing material is another important step in the progress towards the future demolition of the Main Plant.”

Crew members filled 25-pound-capacity bags with the asbestos material and placed them into 900-pound-capacity lift bags. They transported the lift bags on the conveyor

system from inside the building to an outside overhead crane. The crane lowered each lift bag to the ground where a fork truck added them to a waste container for off-site disposal.

Dale Macklem, deactivation and decommissioning manager with cleanup contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley, commended his crew for the creativity to turn an idea into reality.

“Working with asbestos-containing material is the most physically challenging work at the site when you include radiological and industrial hazards, layers of protective clothing, and warm temperatures,” Macklem said. “This crew used lessons learned to enhance safety, improve efficiency, and reduce exposure to job-related hazards. They put their collective knowledge into practice, and that’s to be commended.”

Constructed in the 1960s, the Main Plant, a commercial reprocessing facility, was used to recover reusable plutonium and uranium from spent nuclear reactor fuel, Pillittere said.

The crew will use the conveyor system to remove asbestos-containing material from the three-story Main Plant Office Building before demolishing that structure later this year.

In good health and believing her soccer program to be in good hands, Mary Neilon sounds as if she has no regrets about retirement.

One of the area’s longesttenured and most successful coaches in any sport stepped aside when she decided to retire from teaching health and physical education at Ellicottville last month at the end of the school year. So, for the first time in 35 years, a new face will lead the Eagles’ girls soccer program, which became a perennial sectional contender under Neilon.

“It’s been kind of coming for about a year and there were just some signs in my life that were telling me it’s time,” Neilon said of the decision to retire. “I’ve been teaching for 37 years. So it’s a good time to go and I wanted to go while things were good, and they have been good. (There were) some family things and personal things that just were giving me signs that were like, ‘Yeah, I’ve had a good run.’”

Two former players and coaches under Neilon will take over the girls soccer team, as Tammy Eddy is the new head coach and Katie Taylor her assistant.

“They both played for me,” Neilon said. “I was like, ‘Take what you can, maybe what you learned from me, but you have to make the program your own.

Don’t feel like you have to be me. Be courageous to set your own sails.’ And I hope that the players and parents can accept that as well.

who have coached with me for several years. I couldn’t ask for a better situation.”

NEILON SAID she doesn’t expect to have any involvement in soccer going forward.

“It was a good time to step away from soccer as well,” Neilon said. “The team is young. I have some good coaches coming in to take over. In terms of my involvement, no.

“I won’t say never, but the feeling right now is (it’s) good to step away and time to do what I want to do. I definitely love my career, (but) it’s time.”

Entering last season, Neilon ranked seventh all-time in the state for girls soccer coaching victories.

Upon retirement, she holds a 458-160-34 record, second in Western New York and the Big 30 in victories behind her contemporary from Allegany-Limestone, Dale MacArthur (472).

In 34 seasons, all of them

in Class D until last fall, Neilon’s Eagles won 25 Section 6 championships.

Four of those seasons, Ellicottville won a state championship: 1990, ‘98, ‘99 and 2003.

“Maybe sticking with it for so long,” Neilon said of what she’s most proud of. “I love what I did. I always felt that I gave my best and hope I made a connection with the kids.”

As for what she’ll miss the most, Neilon thought of the little moments throughout a season.

“The day in and day out with the girls and game day,” she said. “Game day was always a big day.

And probably just the camaraderie with the other coaches. That’s going to be the toughest thing to walk away from … the coaching.

But it’s going to be OK. It’s time.”

Neilon said retirement had nothing to do with health, but admitted the job could get “tiring.”

“It’s all good and I feel like I’m leaving on a high note, and that’s why I wanted to do it,” she said.

“I’m good. And I wanted to go while I was good.

There’s just some things in the job, not so much the coaching, but in the job itself. It gets tiring. It wasn’t my oxygen anymore. But I’ve had a good run and a lot of fond memories, but I’m looking forward to the new path.”

And what plans might be included on that path?

“Do whatever I want whenever I want,” she said.

“I don’t really have any plans. I’m not committing to anything.”

HEALTH & FITNESS: MENTAL HEALTH IS HEALTH, TOO

By Kim Duke This article is one that I have been writing over and over in my head on a weekly basis. This column is not as upbeat as my articles typically are.

Instead, this is about the “elephant in the room.”

I want to talk about mental health. I want to explore the reality of depression and how difficult it can be to out-exercise it, outmedicate it and outrun it.

Seasons can cause it to worsen or get better. But, sometimes, there is no obvious trigger and it can come out of nowhere.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, depression is a disorder of the brain.

There are a variety of causes, including genetic, biological, environmental and psychological factors.

Depression is a serious medical illness. It’s more than just a feeling of being sad or “blue” for

a few days. If you are one of the more than 19 million teens and adults in the United States who have depression, the feelings do not go away.

They persist and interfere with your everyday life.

Symptoms can include: • Feeling sad or “empty” • Loss of interest in favorite activities • Overeating, or not wanting to eat at all • Not being able to sleep, or sleeping too much • Feeling very tired • Feeling hopeless, irritable, anxious or guilty • Aches or pains, headaches, cramps or digestive problems

• Thoughts of death or suicide.

So, why now am I writing such an article?

Because so often I see people around me so wrapped up in their social media reflections that they do not see that their own neighbor, friend or family member is struggling right before their eyes.

Look away from your phones and computers and see and communicate with the people around you. Look past your own selfie and see what is truly going on in your community.

We have become such a narcissistic society where we feed upon images.

This is neither healthy nor

is it a reality.

I write week after week about getting healthy, staying healthy, etc. But, health is so much more than your weight and diet.

Mental health is like the “core” in Core Performance. If you do not have a strong core, the rest of your body will struggle to gain strength.

Do you see the analogy?

As someone who did not grow up in the age of computers, I have, thankfully, not known the consequences of social media’s demonization.

As you may surmise, depression and social media can go hand in hand.

What I would like you

to take away from this article is that depression is a real thing. And, until you’ve truly experienced it and the darkness it can bring, you should not judge another for it or ignore it.

Instead, do more to be kind to people who surround you. Look for signs that may seem off to you. Never hesitate to ask questions that may seem probing but may also be life-saving. Just be present.

Life is not about the pictures you put on social media — life is about the grit and reality of what you don’t want people to see that sometimes matters the most.

Gas prices held steady this past week

New York gas prices were unchanged in the past week, averaging $2.86 per gallon according to GasBuddy’s daily survey.

Gas prices in New York are 0.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago, yet stand 13.3 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The price for regular gas in Ellicottville Tuesday was $2.89/g at the Kwik Fill station on Washington Street.

price reports, the cheapest station in New York is priced at $2.39/g while the most expensive was $3.69/g, a difference of $1.30/g. The cheapest price in the entire country stood at $2.01/g while the most expensive was $5.49/g, a difference of $3.48/g.

The Zoning Board of Appeals granted a variance to allow the 8-foot10-inch-high fence, approximately 2½ feet over the allowed height. One of the conditions of approval was the fence must undergo an ADR by the village board.

The planning board does not believe that the change in the fencing requires a site plan modification and approved the fencing as is.

Next, the board discussed an issue with a driveway put in at 16 Rockwell Ave. There was a parking area that was installed in front of the house, which is

prohibited in the village and not on the originally approved site plan.

The owners also want to expand the size of the deck an additional 20 feet by 20 feet that was previously approved.

The deck would now encroach one of the setbacks and need a zoning board variance. The village board cannot act until the zoning board makes their decision in August regarding the deck.

A site plan modification is needed for the driveway, which requires a public hearing. The board set such a hearing on the Site Plan Modification for Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m, which will be the next regular meeting.

Bed & Breakfast proposed for Jefferson Street

An application for a Bed & Breakfast to be located at 30 Jefferson St. was submitted to the Ellicottville Planning Board for its regular July meeting last week.

For this, a Special Use Permit is needed. All criteria of a B&B, per the zoning regulations, have been met.

No site plan or architectural review is needed because there are no changes to the footprint or exterior of the structure.

The board deemed this a complete application and set a public hearing for Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m.

John B. Mets, 60, of Little Valley, died at his home on July 2, 2019.

He was born in Pittsfield, Mass., son of the late Edwin Mets and the former Joann Baker, who survives.

John had been a resident of the area for many

Francis Joseph Snyder, 82, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019, surrounded by his family.

Francis was born May 25, 1937, to Frank O’Dell and Florence Elizabeth (McNamara) Snyder, in Salamanca, the eldest of three children.

Francis was a 1954 graduate of Ten Broeck Academy in Franklinville. He attended Alfred State University from 1954 to 1955, then transferred to Saint Bonaventure University in 1955, graduating with a BS in Chemistry in 1959.

He served as a Field

Artillery Officer in the United States Army for 12 years.

After graduating, Francis was employed as a chemist at RohmHaas (Dow Chemicals) in Philadelphia, Pa. for over a year prior to returning to manage the Snyder Family Farm, which is situated on the first parcel purchased from the Holland Land Company in 1815 in what is now Humphrey.

While working the farm, Francis pursued his lifelong commitment to helping others in various capacities at Cattaraugus County Social Services, New York State Youth Camp, the New York State Psychiatric Center, the Franklinville Board of Education, the BOCES Board of Education, Cattaraugus County Probation Department and a term as Justice of the Peace for the Town of Humphrey.

Summer Smart conservation strategies for drought

Drought can affect just about any area of the country at any time. Water conservation remains the most important consideration during times of drought. Drought preparedness can make riding out the weather that much easier.

The National Drought Mitigation Center defines drought as "a deficiency of precipitation over an extended period of time."

Drought indices vary depending on geographic location. What would be a drought in one area may be entirely normal conditions in another.

Surviving drought that results in a water shortage and impacts quality of life may require government intervention and the cooperation of citizens and homeowners.

Even if drought is not typically accompanied by the kinds of warnings associated with floods and certain storms, it remains dangerous. Statistics

Brain reports that, between the years of 1980 to 2014, roughly 19,000 people a year lost their lives due to the effects of drought.

Drought may be most associated with arid regions, but it is not exclusive to deserts. For instance, drought is a problem in Canada, a country often associated with cold weather. As early as the end of March 2017, the Canadian Drought Monitor indicated large areas of abnormally dry conditions in British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon, and Saskatchewan, with smaller pockets of abnormally dry areas in Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Novia Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Conserving water is the utmost priority during times of drought. Just a few changes to daily habits can have a sizable impact.

· Check all plumbing for leaks and have any leaks repaired. · Install aerators and flow restrictors on faucets. · Choose energy- and water-efficient appliances. · Install low-volume toilets, which can use less than half of the water of older models. · Reduce reliance on sink disposals for getting rid of food waste. · Never use fresh water when recycled water can be used safely. For example, collected rainwater can be repurposed to water plants and outdoor landscapes. · Only wash dishes in a dishwasher with a full load. · Rely on compostable or recyclable paper dishes during times of big water restrictions to cut down on dishwashing. · Collect "cool" water when heating up the shower or sink water for washing. Use it to clean areas of the home or water plants.
