Start your summer right in Ellicottville

By Kellen M. Quigley With Memorial Day Weekend now past, it’s practically summer here in Ellicottville, which means any outdoor activities you want to take part in are available.

From golf to nature hikes to pool time and more, read on for some great ideas on what do in the Enchanted Mountains this June.

Holiday Valley’s warm-weather amenities are in full swing this time of year. Get your golf game on at their 18-hole Double Black Diamond golf course.

The nearby practice facility with driving range, putting green and short game area on Route 219 across from Holiday Valley will have you sinking those birdie putts in no time.

The resort’s three-pool complex is now open weekends only and will open daily from June 18 through Labor Day. Splash into a kiddie pool, a lap pool and an activity pool, featuring a diving board and slide, play a variety of poolside games or sip a drink from the Cabana Bar. For those thrill seekers, get your adrenaline rush at Sky High Adventure Park, which includes the Aerial Park, the Climbing Forest and the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster.

The Aerial Park, the largest of its kind in New York State, combines a series of platforms and bridges built in a four-acre section of the woods near the resort’s Tannenbaum Lodge.

With 13 courses of varying levels of difficulty including 142 platforms, 174 elements and 43 zip lines — as well as a platform 68 feet in the air and a zip line measuring 350 feet, you can become Tarzan or Jane for the afternoon.

Those ages five and up can enjoy the Climbing Forest, which is like a 3D version of a rock wall, and only one of three in the country. There are 10 trees outfitted with color-coded climbing holds and the difficulty ranges from very easy to very

Ellicottville Town Board to discuss solar farms at next meeting

The May meeting of the Ellicottville Town Board opened with a presentation by 3 + 1 Financial representative Alex DeRosa.

This company works with public entities to collect data on their cash management.

They have worked to much success with Batavia, who referred them to Ellicottville, Elma and Aurora, to name a few.

Their goal is to make the taxpayers’ dollar work as hard as possible while it is sitting idle in the bank.

The algorithm that they use was developed and used by banks since the 1990s. They then went on their own after allowing their non-compete to expire in 2014. This is when they started to offer their services to smaller municipalities.

The first phase would be a complete data analysis of the cash flow. This would include all transactions and the most recent audit. After this analysis is complete if the municipality decides to proceed after it is $7,500 and will be $1,875 quarterly going forward. The town of Le Roy earned an additional $2,400, after paying 3 + 1, the first year and are on track to earn over $40,000 this year.

Essentially this is a liquidity analysis and 3 + 1 will negotiate better interest rates on CDs on behalf of

the town. A key component of their program that sets them apart is all decisions are left in the hands of the Town Board, 3 + 1 does not communicate final decisions that must come from the Board.

Also, they do not ask the town to change banks, but work with the local bank the town already uses. The board members thanked DeRosa for attending and said they would discuss further after talking we the references that DeRosa provided.

Next, was an informal presentation regarding Solar Farms. Gary Palumbo, Village Planner, spoke about the need for our zoning to address solar power. There could be projects in front of the Planning Board in the future and processes and procedure need to be set.

NYSERDA has great source material for planners to best advise on the matter of Solar Power. Joe Mendelson of Omni-Navitas spoke about a Solar Farm Project. He explained that a Solar Farm takes up two to five acres and does not disturb wooded land. They aim to disturb as little of the landscape as possible, preferably using open level fields. There will be a formal presentation at the June meeting and the Board urges the public to attend.

FRANKLINVILLE Voters passed a $19.52 million budget by a 162-69 tally. The budget represents a 3 percent spending increase and no change to the property tax levy.

School board incumbent Diane Soulvie was elected to one available seat with

Robert Field was not elected.

The candidates with the largest and second-largest number of votes received three-year terms, while the candidate with the thirdlargest number of votes received a two-year term.

School officials did not report vote totals for their proposals or school board race.

RANDOLPH Voters passed a $20.02 million budget by a 212-20 tally. The budget represents a 0.62 percent spending decrease and no change to the property tax levy.

An additional proposal to establish a capital improvement reserve fund not to exceed $7 million was approved, 203 to 25.

Of four school board

candidates vying for three seats with threeyear terms, elected were incumbent Daniel Jackson with 193 votes, newcomer Kyle Brown with 174 votes and incumbent Julie Milliman with 158 votes.

Peggy Root received 127 votes.

SALAMANCA Voters passed a $42.41 million budget by a 546-72 tally. The budget represents a 14.21 percent spending increase and no change to the property tax levy.

An additional proposal for a $34.7 million capital project with no tax increase for work at Veterans Memorial Park, Prospect Elementary School and the main campus was approved, 545 to 75.

With two school board seats carrying five-year terms open, elected were Theresa Ray with 489 votes and Bradley Earley with 233 write-in votes.

WEST VALLEY Voters passed an $8.62 million budget by a 254141 tally. The budget represents a 5.45 percent spending decrease and a 3 percent decrease to the property tax levy.

An additional proposal to purchase a 22-passenger bus for $55,882 and a 65-passenger bus for $103,806 was approved, 233 to 159.

School officials did not report the results of a school board race between incumbent George Kazmierczak and newcomer Darla Kent, both vying for one seat that carries a five-year term.

in November. The board is looking into getting Poverty Hill done immediately. A letter was received from Assemblyman Gigilo stating that the CHIPS and NYPave program funds have been reinstated and remain the same.

Discussed in the engineering report, National Grid has done an inventory of the street lights and what it would cost to either buy them or at least convert them to LED bulbs. Both would yield savings with the latter being less expensive initially but buying them outright would give better long term returns.

Pierson has charged the New York Power Authority to draw up an analysis on each option. The Sommerville Valley Box Culvert project bids were in and the lowest bid was D&H Excavating at $148,900.

On June 1, the work at the Town Center is expected to begin. The AC project at the Historical Society is complete and the Joint Water District is moving forward.

In new business, the town board approved the Championship Rodeo request.

In old business, the EVGV Trail has after a long time finalized all insurance issues and all Grading Releases have been signed. They are now working on DEC permission to start breaking trail.

The next Ellicottville Town Board meeting will be June 26th at 6 PM at the Town/Village Hall.

Pasture Walk and discussion set for June 8 in Cattaraugus

Anyone with an interest in learning more about improving and managing pastures, soil health and how to increase the yield and quality of pastures for grazing dairy, beef and other livestock, are encouraged to join Josh, Ashley and Jeffrey Bailey at 6896 Bailey Hill Road in Cattaraugus on Saturday, June 8 from noon to 2:30 p.m. for a Pasture Walk program.

A complimentary lunch provided by local agribusinesses the Bailey family work with.

The Bailey family milks 65 dairy cows on their hilltop farm and rotationally graze their dairy herd on native grasses and clovers, focusing on low cost and efficiency.

They divide their pasture into smaller paddocks and provide fresh water through an above-ground water line, which feeds water tanks in the paddocks.

They welcome anyone interested to attend the pasture walk at their farm, where they will share their pasture management practices and look forward to the discussion and ideas from other grazers to help them continue to improve their grazing system.

Don Wild will help facilitate the discussion at this pasture walk. Wild

owns Wild Acres Farm in Great Valley and raises multiple species of specialty livestock including chickens, turkeys, pigs and lambs, using managed rotational grazing.

Wild is a forage specialist and dealer for King’s AgriSeed, and works closely with local farms, sharing his expertise and passion for grazing. He emphasizes the systems approach with farms, including the grass forage, fencing, water and animals and assists farm owners and their families with ideas to help improve the management of their grazing program.

The Pasture Walk will begin with a complimentary light lunch at noon. The group will walk through the pasture starting at 12:30 p.m. discussing the farm’s recent soil analysis results and recommended soil amendments and forage species, a pasture forage analysis will be shared to better understand the nutritional value of grasses and clover pasture to livestock and information will be offered to continue developing the fencing and water system to help meet the farm’s goals.

Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and questions throughout the pasture

walk, which will conclude by 2:30 p.m. To maintain biosecurity, please wear footwear that can be easily disinfected at the farm or plastic boots that fit over your boots/shoes will be provided.

County lawmakers to set public hearing for update on Ellicottville Brewing Co. new brewery

Cattaraugus County lawmakers plan to set a public hearing for June 12 to hear an update on the $6 million brewery/pub and craft beer museum the Ellicottville Brewing Co. is developing in Little Valley.

The County Legislature’s Development and Agriculture Committee and Finance Committee were expected to act on the authorization for the public hearing when they met Wednesday night.

Ellicottville Brewing Co. has been making most of its beer at the new brewery on Second Street in Little Valley for nearly a year. It still makes smaller batches and some specialty beers at its flagship Ellicottville brewery/restaurant. The pub and museum opening has been delayed until next year. The pub is currently under construction.

Logistically, it is easier for the company to produce beer at the former Salamanca Beverage Co. warehouse than in the cramped space in and around the Ellicottville brewing site.

More than two years ago, the County Legislature authorized a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant to help establish the brewery/pub/ museum in Little Valley.

A $75,000 loan from the county’s economic development fund was also authorized.

The public hearing at 4 p.m. June 12 in the legislative chamber on the third floor of the County Center here.

Bids for phase II of courtroom renovations at the Cattaraugus County Office Building in Olean are also on the Wednesday committee’s agenda.

The Public Works and Finance committees will review low bids from Duggan & Duggan General Contractors, Allegany, for $314,360 for the general contracting portion of the project. Ahlstrom Schaffer Electric Corp., Jamestown was low bidder for the electrical portion with a $71,500 bid. The project could begin next month.

Previously, the Family Court waiting area, restrooms and attorney meeting rooms were renovated in phase I of the project.

An accompanying resolution authorizes $500,000 from the county fund balance to pay for the program until the state Office of Court Administration can reimburse the county.

Another resolution on agenda contracts with Safe Harbors Environmental Services Inc., Norwell, Mass, for a household hazardous waste collection program.

The company held hazardous waste collection days for the county in 2017 and 2018 For $20,000 the company will stage the event and collect non-usable oilbased paint, select non-chlorinated solvents, corrosives, pesticides and miscellaneous other chemicals including chemistry sets, and pool and photographic chemicals.

The umpire expressed his surprise that the visitors, in a sectional semifinal, had just one win.

Matt Finn agreed with the sentiment.

On May 28, the Ellicottville softball coach witnessed firsthand just how much of a mirage Cassadaga Valley’s record had been.

Hannah Edwards hit a key two-run home run and Kristen DeBicki (8 strikeouts, 2 walks) surrendered just four hits in leading the now 2-15 Cougars into a sectional championship with a 6-2 Class C-2 semifinal victory.

Cassadaga Valley went 0-15 in the regular season and earned the lowest seed (No. 8) in the C-2 bracket before topping No. 1 Frewsburg, 3-2, in the quarterfinals and No. 5 Ellicottville in the semis.

How? It was conditioned to this level of competition, having played two league games against a trio of teams now playing for sectional titles — Chautauqua Lake (Class C-1), Fredonia (B-2) and Dunkirk (B-1) — a pair against a Falconer team that was ousted in the C-1 semis, one against the topseeded Frewsburg team it had just knocked off and two non-league contests against Maple Grove, which it will meet again in the C-2 championship game.

“They’re in just a brutal league over there,” Finn acknowledged. “Almost everyone (in it) is still alive.”

Cougars a 1-0 lead with an early solo shot before Edwards made it 3-0 in the third. DeBicki retired the first nine Ellicottville batters by either strikeout or her own putout.

Linnea Jimerson had two hits and Courtney Sexton tripled and scored a run for the Eagles (6-12), who pulled to within 4-2 in the fourth, but could get no closer. Sexton (7 strikeouts, 2 walks) also surrendered just four hits before having to leave the game in the sixth inning after she injured her foot while sliding into the Cougars catcher at home plate. “(The CV home runs) were definitely key,” Finn said. “That two-run shot was just rough. It was a 1-0 game, and we’re right there, then all of a sudden it’s 3-0.

We didn’t get to DeBicki until the fourth, then we realized we can play a little bit. We pull to within 4-2, then she shut us down again after that.”

Ellicottville 9, Holland 6 Courtney Sexton collected two hits and also earned the win to lead Ellicottville to a narrow upset on Friday in the Section 6 Class C-2 softball quarterfinals in Holland.

Sexton scattered 11 hits and struck out seven with no walks for the fifth-seeded Eagles, who will meet No. 8 Cassadaga Valley (1-15) in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Madison Perry allowed seven hits and five walks and Megan Armbrust had three hits for No. 4 Holland (4-11-1).

ECS board to hold public hearing June 4

The Ellicottville Central School District Board of Education will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, June 4 at 6:45 p.m. in the

high school library.

The purpose of this hearing will be to review the District’s School Safety Plan.

The Franklinville/ Ellicottville boys track and field team won the CCAA Division III championship by the slimmest of margins on Saturday, led by doublewinning sprinter Noah Steinbroner.

The Titans won the Division III boys title by one point, 140-139, over runner-up Maple Grove.

Steinbroner, a sophomore, won the 100 (:11.56) and 200 (:23.52) at the two-day league championship meet, which included 18 teams split into three divisions.

Also for F/E, Tyler Oakes 4th pole vault (11-feet-0).

Charles Jennings was eighth in the 3,000 steeplechase (13:27.65). The Titans’ 3,200 relay team (Liam Conroy, Michael Stewart, AJ Shortz, Adrian de Orbe) was sixth at

9:12.09 and F/E’s 400 relay was eighth (:50.47).

The F/E girls took third in Division III with 118 points, led by 400 hurdles winner Hayly Fredrickson (1:07.65), who also took fourth in the pole vault (9-0). Her twin sister, Logan Fredrickson, was second in the 100 hurdles (:17.15) and eighth in the long jump (14-6.5).

Alysa Williams was third in the 2,000 steeplechase (8:49.60) and sixth in the 3,000 (12:19.60). Meganne Chapman was fifth in the discus (89-2) and eighth in the shot put (29-3). Zooey Green finished eighth in the 100 (:13.84). The Titans’ 1,600 relay (McKenna Kaleta, Logan Fredrickson, Gabby Milligan, Hayly Fredrickson) was sixth at 4:30.64.

Ellicottville students impress all at annual science expo

On May 21, students of all ages gathered once again at Ellicottville Central School for an evening of STEM fun at the annual science exposition.

“The Science, Math, Tech EXPO gives students in grade K-12 the chance to showcase work they are doing in school as well as on their own,” explained organizer Chris Edwards.

Students did just this, providing the community with an impressive showcase of exhibits relating to anatomy, chemical reactions, engineering and more.

Upon first entrance, expogoers were greeted by chemistry student Madisyn Kilby and her project, elephant toothpaste.

Her concoction of hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, water and yeast drew spectators in the door with its oozing and bubbling eruption. Students marveled as the suds overflowed to create a humongous paste, large enough for an elephant.

Under the direction of Edwards, high school engineering students constructed a more than 50-foot-long circuit made from items designed and printed from a 3D printer, as well as conveyors, dismembered piping and metal structures.

“It was a lot of work and took a lot of troubleshooting to put together,” said Bryce Butler.

Edwards said, “Each year the engineering class designs, builds and programs robots for competition and for the EXPO. We use the Tetrix robotic system and ROBOTC from Carnegie Mellon to program the robots.

Upon being asked her favorite station, 2nd grader Ella exclaimed, “The tonoscope,” which was a project created by the first grade class to demonstrate how sound waves travel. Young students squealed with delight as their hums sent grains of rice flying through the air.

As a traditional finale to the evening, Helena Brierton’s Earth Science students tested the eggprotecting capabilities of their egg drop projects. Freshmen and sophomores eagerly waited for their turn to ascend 80 feet above the ground in Ellicottville Fire Department’s tallest ladder truck.

Brierton spectated proudly as her students celebrated their exciting successes — or picked up the sticky leftovers from the pavement.

ECS’s annual STEM Expo was definitely one for the books. The evening was a highlight of the natural talent and intelligence of our very own students, who yet again have outdone themselves in impressing the community.

As the school year winds down, the STEM Expo was a “grand finale”of the year’s activities before preparation for finals begins. Made possible by ECS’s passionate and dedicated teachers and administrators, the Expo was enjoyable for all, and is eagerly awaited for next year!

Carl R. Simons Sr.

Mr. Carl R. Simons Sr., 68, of Great Valley, died Tuesday (May 14, 2019) at Olean General Hospital, following a long illness.

Born Jan. 25, 1951, in Independence, Mo., he was the son of the late Norman C. and Mildred L. Cook Simons. He was married in Mansfield to the former Sandra A. Kelley, who survives.

Mr. Simons was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany.

He had been employed as a sawmill director for Donver Inc. in Salamanca for over 10 years.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He loved being alone or on the Allegany River.

Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Natalie (Roger Phearsdorf) Simons of Kill Buck; nine grandchildren; a

Salamanca, at which time funeral services were held, with Rev. Michael Lonto of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church officiating.

Full military honors were conducted by members of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post 535 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post 5296.

Margery J. Fitzpatrick

Margery J. Fitzpatrick, 96, passed away in her home, in Ellicottville, Wednesday (May 22, 2019) following complications from a fall, in early April. Her daughters, Melanie A Fitzpatrick and Laurie Finger Roblee, with her husband Thomas Roblee, were at her bedside when she passed.

Mrs Fitzpatrick was born

March 16, 1923, in Auburn, daughter of the late Dr. James Hughes and Carolina Fox, both of Ellicottville.

Margery’s love of learning was exemplified through her thirst for knowledge, when she studied pre-med, and achieved a bachelor of science, in 1961; a master’s of science and education, in 1967, from St. Bonaventure University; as well as a masters of science in biology and physiology, from Niagara University, in 1975.

Her scientific cancer research, at Roswell Memorial Institute, was published in several medical journals, in 1975.

Passing on her love for education, she was a substitute teacher in

all subjects, throughout Cattaraugus County, from 1969-1971, and a permanent high school science teacher, at Little Valley Central School, from 1971-1972.

Her community involvement included supporting the Ellicottville Historical Society; Ellicottville Library; village of Ellicottville events; National Humane Society; St. John’s Episcopal Church; and in the election process, at the election booths, in Ellicottville, for many years.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, in Ellicottville.

She is survived by two grandsons, Geoffry Josef Rolls of Steamboat Springs, Colo. and Eric

Franklin Rolls of Salt Lake City, Utah; two greatgranddaughters, Evelyn Jane Rolls and Amelia Grace Rolls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Including her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Fitzpatrick; a sister, Virginia Fitzpatrick; and a brother, James Hughey.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Because of her love for dogs, and her many rescued dogs in her later years, contributions can be made to the SPCA in Cattaraugus county, PO Box 375, Olean, NY 14760, or to St. John’s Episcopal Church, in Ellicottville.

Joseph and Teresa Jedrzejek

Joseph Stanley Jedrzejek, 88, and Teresa Kaluzienski Jedrzejek, 90, were considered a rare couple.

Married nearly 49 years, they died within less than two days of one another.

Teresa went to be with the Lord on May 14, 2019, and Joseph died the next day, on Wednesday (May 15, 2019).

Teresa was born Jan. 12, 1929, in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Michael and Eva Luksa Kaluzienski.

Joseph was born Sept.

1, 1930, in Ellicottville, and was the son of the late Peter and Catherine Lesniak Jedrzejek.

The couple was married Nov. 7, 1970, in Buffalo, at the Assumption Church.

After marriage, he continued running the

family’s dairy farm in Ellicottville, where many fond memories were had by all.

Teresa enjoyed cooking; hosting family and friends; and loved animals, especially dogs, horses, and the farm animals. In her younger years, she loved horseback riding.

She was kind-hearted and gentle, generous and loving, and a friend to all. She will be remembered for her huge heart and devotion to faith and family.

Joseph had an affinity for bowling and hockey; enjoyed politics; was a skilled craftsman and problem solver. The couple enjoyed traveling together and were devoted Catholics, doing a lot of work with the

church.

They worked with the Fresh Air program for several years, fostering children for summers and giving them the experience of farm life. They were members of the Holy Name of Mary Church, in Ellicottville.

Joe was a fourth degree with the Knights of Columbus, where he served as the grand knight of the Pope John II Council 12549.

He was also a member of the Fourth Degree Color Corp. and the Holy Name of Mary Ushers Club.

Teresa is survived by a brother, Walter (Gloria) Kaluzienski of Leesburg, Va. Joseph is survived by his twin sister, Josephine Beckman of Laguna Woods, Calif.; and his brother, Peter (Joan) Jedrzejek of Thousand Oaks, Calif. Together, they have countless nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Michael Kaluzienski and Joseph Kaluzienski; and two sisters,

The bounty of the garden can be made more abundant and fruitful with the addition of the right soil amendments. Compost is a key element of rich, nutritious soil.

Scraps from items that have been grown in the garden can then be reused in the production of the compost that feeds that same garden.

It’s a continuous circle of garden life.

Getting started with compost is relatively easy. Homeowners should choose an outdoor space near the garden but far away from the home so that it won’t be disturbed by kids or animals. Some people opt for an open compost pile, while others choose closed bins to contain the possible smell and to camouflage the compost.

A sunny spot will help the compost to develop faster, according to Good Housekeeping.

The next step is to start gathering the scraps and materials that will go into the compost. Better Homes and Gardens suggests keeping a bucket or

The Nannen Arboretum will host Twan Leenders, President of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (RTPI), on June 12 at 6 p.m. for a presentation about the institute and its activities.

Roger Tory Peterson, born in Jamestown in 1908, was respected worldwide as an ornithologist, artist, writer and wildlife photographer.

His legacy promotes the pursuit of bird studies and the conservation of natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

RTPI’s mission is to foster understanding, appreciation and protection of the natural world in the spirit of Peterson’s many accomplishments.

Leenders will discuss some of the institute’s work, ranging from monitoring Piping Plover and other beach nesting birds on the shores of the Long Island Sound, through the conservation of urban wildlife in Jamestown, to tropical migratory bird banding studies in the rainforests of Costa Rica and Panama.

Much of RTPI’s conservation work is carried out by local high school and college students in an effort to inspire and educate the next generation of young naturalists.

The program will take place in the Ellicottville Town Center building adjacent to the Nannen Arboretum at 28 Parkside Drive. Admission is $5 at the door.

A walk may take place in the arboretum after the presentation, weather permitting.

Farming workshop offered in Ellicottville June 4

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County is pleased to offer a workshop titled “So, You Want to Start a Farm?” to be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County office, 28 Parkside Drive, Ellicottville.

This workshop is for participants who have ever dreamed of having their own farming operation. Topics covered will be broad and include enterprise selection, insurance, marketing and resources for future exploration of owning your own farm business.

The instructor for this workshop will be Katelyn Walley-Stoll, Farm Business Management Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County. She is a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in Animal Science and Ag Business Management with a Master’s Degree in Adult Learning and owns and operates a diversified livestock farm.

This farming workshop is open to the general public, including homesteaders, beginning farmers, established farmers looking to diversify and grow, agriculture enthusiasts and everyone in between.

Participants of this discussion-based

workshop will receive a comprehensive binder with resources for beginning farmers and opportunities for future follow-up.

There is no fee to attend. This informational program is sponsored
