I Love My Park Day — May 4 On Saturday, May 4, celebrate I Love My Park Day by giving back. The Friends of Allegany State Park will host volunteers as part of more than 100 cleanups, improvement and beautification events happening statewide.

This event will be held on the Red House side of the park and is the fifth year the Friends have

hosted the event in cooperation with Allegany State Park management and PTNY. Volunteers from across the state will participate in cleanup, improvement and beautification events at New York State parks and historic sites.

There are four areas planned to see improvements this year: cabins, campgrounds, the picnic area and the camping trails.

Volunteers will take part in clearing debris, rebuilding fire pits, trimming branches and brush and more. Please bring appropriate work clothes and tools.

Additionally — thanks to the Friends of Allegany State Park and a few sponsors — a free hot dog lunch will be served after the event.

Although with lower participation expected than past years, officials for the Great Valley Regatta said the number of people signed up for the trip down Great Valley Creek is at a good amount for this weekend.

Mark Ward, second assistant fire chief at the Great Valley Volunteer Fire Company, which organizes the event, said several factors contributed to the number of registrants being slightly down, but the support is still substantial.

“With the economy, the interest, the conditions — the weather hasn’t been very cooperative,” he said. “We’ve had more, but I think it might have right-sized itself.”

The 45th annual Great Valley Regatta takes place this weekend, with crafts scheduled to take to the creek from Klawitter Road in Great Valley to Route 417 in Kill Buck on Saturday

Although the event was cancelled in 2017 due to torrential rainfall and high water levels, this year the creek is in good shape and water levels are good for casual and experienced sailors alike.

“The water is OK, there’s nothing to be fearful of that way,” Ward said. “When it’s a little highter it’s a little easier to get the boats down, so navigating it will be easier.”

Because the most updated list had 1,700 registrants when the average number is around 2,200, Ward said they plan to allow day-of registration this weekend, as long as those who plan to sign up can pay in cash.

“If there are some people in the neighborhood who would still like to get into it, this will give them the opportunity,” Ward said. “We’re up and ready to go.”

Niles Pierson, Village Engineer, spoke said the town has yet to receive reimbursement for the Engineering Grant they were awarded. He advised that he has received the reimbursement paperwork from New York state after some time of waiting to obtain them.

Pierson said he is working on them so as soon as the state says to send them in they are ready and prepared.

Great Valley Senior Group to meet May 8

The Great Valley Senior Group will gather for its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 8 at the Humphrey Fire Hall.

The group includes residents from the towns of Great Valley, Humphrey, Salamanca, Ellicottville and Mansfield.

participants will float down the Great Valley Creek beginning at the campgrounds on Klawitter Road, a short distance from the firemen’s hall. From there, they’ll encounter a handful of pit stops and end at the bridge that carries Route 417 over the creek between Kill Buck and Salamanca.

That’s been the course for little over a decade. In past years, when the event was still a race, the course ended at Masonic Park in west Salamanca after participants would navigate from the Great Valley Creek onto the Allegheny River.

Although the regatta isn’t as competitive now, there is still a weekend-long party that includes a trip down the creek. This year’s theme is “Revenge of the Nerds,” according to the regatta’s website.

The regatta is the largest fundraising event for the Great Valley Volunteer Fire Company, at $50 per person

Last year, the company used about $40,000 of the money to pay for a hose and loose equipment on the department’s new 250-gallon pumper truck.

This year, participants can see ongoing progress of the company’s latest project, renovating the look of the company’s clubhouse building on Depot Street, including a new entryway.

“You’ll see new outside wall covering and then there’s stone about 3 feet up in the front,” Ward said. “We’re replacing the exterior that had been on the building since 1983.”

In recent years, younger volunteers have stepped up into leadership positions on the regatta committee, Ward said, which is one of the reasons it’s been able to continue for four decades.

Ward is one of the few fire company members who has been around every year since the first regatta.

“After this many years,

it’s like riding a bike. You don’t forget how to do it,” he said. “But we’ve adjusted, we changed, we’ve done what we’ve had to do to make it work.”

Cattaraugus County sheriff’s deputies and New York State Police will be on patrol throughout the weekend in the area. Buses will also bring people back to the campsites after they get out of the creek at the Kill Buck bridge, and trucks will bring the water crafts back.

“The community has supported us in allowing us to have this event, and we want to show our gratitude by giving back to the community in ways that will benefit everybody,” Ward said. “If you’d asked me 45 years ago if I thought this thing would still be going, my response would have been, ‘No way,’ but the guys and ladies have made it work.”

With “I Love Lucy,” Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz created and starred in one of the most beloved series in television history.

She was nominated for 13 Emmy awards, winning four times for her work in “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show.”

Beyond her legacy as a comedic actress, Ball was the first female head of a major Hollywood production studio and known to be a savvy businesswoman in an

otherwise male-dominated industry.

While she supported Jamestown’s early concepts to build a museum in her honor, she expressed the desire for it to be a much broader celebration and examination of comedy, which led to the development of the National Comedy Center, the first museum devoted to comedy as an art form.

With innovative technology, interactivity and content personalization, the 37,000-square-foot National Comedy Center complex has pioneered 21st-century museum design, in much the same way that Ball, Arnaz, and their team at Desilu Productions pioneered the technology for the threecamera production system employed for “I Love Lucy,” a production technique still commonly used today.

For over 25 years, the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival in Jamestown has showcased comedy’s rising young comedians and greatest stars, including Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, Jay Leno, Lily Tomlin, Lewis Black, Trevor Noah, Joan Rivers, Ellen DeGeneres, Jim Gaffigan, Paula Poundstone, Ray Romano and over 100 other comedic artists.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS Ski Club ladies present $7,570 check to Children’s Advocacy Center

On Feb. 15, the ladies of the Ellicottville Ski Club at Holiday Valley held their 14th annual ESC Ladies’ Day, where the women raised $7,570 to benefit this year’s recipient, the Southern Tier Children’s Advocacy Center.

What began 14 years ago as an informal ski day followed by a dinner prepared by the men of club has grown to be an annual fundraising event. To date, the women have raised over $79,000 for various area charities.

Past recipients include Family Support for Ellicottville, Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program at Holiday Valley, Ellicottville Memorial Library, Ellicottville Community Food Pantry and last year’s recipient, the Nannen Arboretum, among others.

In addition to donations from members, nearly every local business contributed to this year’s silent and live auction as well as a ticket raffle.

“Our event is so successful thanks to the area businesses as well as the ESC members and their generous contributions over the past thirteen years,” said Laura DeCinque, event co-chair.

The mission of the Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center (STCAC) is to prevent and respond effectively to child sexual and physical abuse. The STCAC provides a safe, child-friendly and homelike environment

Over 50 professionals from 16 agencies manage cases in a collaborative effort, each helping the other achieve the Center’s goals. STCAC also provides space for research and training so professionals and community members can learn how to prevent child abuse.

This is the largest donation the STCAC has received since opening, according to officials.

“The Southern Tier Children’s Advocacy Center is near and dear to my heart. I am also honored to be a part of a group of women that did such an amazing job for the center,” Lori Rieman, Cattaraugus County District Attorney, added. “They all came together with a mission and knocked it out of the park!”

Through trial and error, heartache and happiness, Ellicottville’s Class of 2019 stumbled their way into adulthood. Through its lifetime, high school saw the best and worst of human existence. It saw tears and laughter, stress and apathy.

It saw the rainbow of adolescence, existing only as a blank parchment for stories to be written on.

Senior year, full of promise, ushered in as many firsts as it did lasts. It is the freshest, most poignant memory that

high school has to offer.

Senior year, a manyheaded beast, lived a full and successful life. It did all that it was meant to do, nothing more or less. It is survived by an expectant bunch of juniors, just as excited as their predecessors.

A memorial service will be held for senior year on June 28 at Ellicottville Central School. Hopefully then, will it be peacefully laid to rest, so that its progeny, the Class of 2019, can go forth and live.

County GOP election commissioner resigns, set to run for Ellicottville district Legislator

Cattaraugus County Republican Election Commissioner Michael M. Brisky resigned his post Friday afternoon, April 12, saying he intends to run for Cattaraugus County Legislature.

Brisky told the Olean Times Herald late Friday he had been nominated earlier that day after District 3 Legislator Robert Breton, R-Franklinville, announced he would decline the nomination.

District 3 includes the towns of Ellicottville, Farmersville, Franklinville, Lyndon, Machias and Mansfield.

“I was nominated to the vacancy late this afternoon after I resigned my post,” Brisky said. “I’ve been thinking about it since Bob decided to get out of the race. I decided to take a run for the County Legislature and pursue some other interests. I plan to run a spirited campaign.”

Brisky, who is in the last year of his four-year appointment, is the second county official to step

down to seek a seat on the County Legislature since the end of February.

On Feb. 27, thenCounty Attorney Eric Firkel resigned amid an investigation into harassment claims by two county employees but has since filed nominating petitions to run for County Legislature, sparking a Republican primary in District 7.

A report on the investigation by the Rochester law firm Harris Beach is expected to be completed soon and made available to legislators.

Cattaraugus County Republican Party Chairman Robert C. Keis Sr. said April 12 that Brisky informed him he would be stepping down as election commissioner before he submitted his resignation earlier in the day.

Brisky had expressed interest in being nominated by the Committee to Fill Vacancies on Breton’s petitions, Keis added.

“Mike is a very bright young man who did the election commissioner job very well,” Keis said.

“I hope his future plans work out for him and he’ll continue to help us out.

He did an excellent job.”

Brisky is a former Franklinville supervisor and a former aide to Assemblyman Joseph Giglio, R-Gowanda. He also ran unsuccessfully for county clerk before his appointment to the Board of Elections post.

Brisky said that while there are a lot of “decent legislators,” a lot of legislators seem to be there for “self interest.”

“We need to right the ship. We need to do some things different in Cattaraugus County to look out for the taxpayers,” he said.

He added, “I’ve wanted to run for the Legislature since the so-called coalition was formed to serve a handful of selfimportant legislators, a move that has had only a negative effect on the taxpayers of this county.”

Keis said the full county Republican Committee would meet soon to recommend a candidate for Republican election commissioner.

In his police report, Don Auge advised that things have quieted down since the end of the winter season. The new vehicle is currently being outfitted, he added.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, the project that two RIT student groups are working on is nearly complete, reported Pierson. They have been tasked at no cost to the Town/ Village to develop a presentation and plans to build a new DPW building. The final presentation was April 25 in Rochester at the University Campus.

One piece of great news is at the last quarterly water readouts the system was metered at 83 percent, which means that only 17 percent of the water produced is being lost due to leaks in the system. This great improvement is due to the recent updates to the system and water pump stations and infrastructure.

Pierson said he attended a “Train the Trainer” seminar to be certified as a sexual harassment trainer. He will be organizing training that all Municipal officials, employees and volunteers.

There was a presentation for work to be done at the Historical Society Building which would include an air conditioning temperature control system to better preserve the artifacts and seal up the floor for better energy efficiency. This project will cost $4,950.

Next was a discussion on the NYSERDA

Grant for the Town Center to replace all of the windows. Pierson presented redoing the walls as well with hardy board siding.

Seeing as they will be tearing it down to redo the windows, it makes fiscal sense to update the exterior as well, he said. This will lead to even better energy efficiency.

The total project will run $118,977.73, with $50,000 to be reimbursed by the grant.

In the Highway Department, the workers have been out trimming trees and have started to patch potholes. There was a culvert blocked on Springs Road cause a washout the issue was resolved.

Holiday Valley Road will be restriped by mid-May. The board approved a letter to be sent to Northwood Drive Residents regarding excessive runoff from driveways and property that is blocking town drainage.

ALSO OF NOTE, the board: • accepted the low bid of DJ’s Lawn Service to care for the Cemetery Maintenance Building for $2,999; • approve the Chamber’s request to use the Gazebo; a second and ayes carried; • noted the 28 Parkside Drive survey is complete and the search has been ordered; and • discussed the EVGV Trail being close to resolving insurance hurdles and hoping to get cutting trail before the June 1.

The next meeting of the Town Board will be May 15 at 6 p.m. at the Town/Village Hall.

HEALTH & FITNESS: STRETCH AFTER SKI SEASON

By Kim Duke After the ski season has ended, do not stop stretching and conditioning.

Many of my clients are skiers or snowboarders who have had a very active season due to our extra long winter. But now, with skiing/snowboarding season over, these same clients are experiencing stiffness and tightness in their backs, hips and legs.

The reason for this is because of the complex genetic engineering that goes into the makeup of the lower body.

The knee, for example, has an extremely large threshold for impact absorption that allows

people to run and jump at unprecedented levels of competition despite moving in a simple hinge motion.

However simple the motion, the amount of muscles used to perform the hinge itself is actually quite drastic. If these muscles like the quadriceps and the calves are underused or have weak function there will be drastic increase of injury, and therefore decrease in performance.

In order to aid the knee in performance we move these muscles through their normal range of motion and try to increase the degree of range each time.

By stretching and progressing the musculature around the knee we help promote proper movement and elasticity from the largest movement contributors to the smallest.

By stretching muscles around the knees and hips like the IT band, the adductors, the quads and

hip flexors, that tension can be lessened and prevented.

Stretching can also help you recover from inefficient movement patterns either on the hill or off of it.

While the tendency is to focus solely on the lower body, it should be stressed that the upper body should not be overlooked.

Your upper body is impacted from the twisting of your torso while changing direction, planting your poles to create momentum and bracing when falling.

Your shoulder protocol should focus on stretching the shoulder and its many attachments like the triceps, biceps, pectoral muscles, deltoids and rotator cuffs — moving them through full range of motion.

So whether you are preparing for ski season or recovering from ski season, stretching should be an important part of your daily routine.

Classic Car Cruise-In — May 8 Owners of classic cars will have the opportunity this summer to show off their vehicles in the fourth annual Allegany State Park Classic Car Cruise-In. Third Saturday Trek — May 18 Get out of the house and come join in these free, family-friendly and fun hikes.

These treks will be led by park staff or members of the Friends of Allegany State Park or Historical Society, and each will focus on a different area of the park.

This month’s hike will take place at 1 p.m. May 18, led by park staff member Joe Bottone, and focus on the history of Allegany State Park and explore old Camp Turner/Group Camp 3. Participants will have the chance to see what remains of the old campsite and learn about the history behind it.

The hike will start at the trailhead for North Country Trail on ASP Rt. 3 between Blacksnake Trail (ASP site #42) and Bear Caves (ASP site #41). Officials suggest participants park at the Bear Caves lot and walk a short distance to the start location at North Country Trail.

Hikers are asked to dress for the weather with appropriate footwear — hiking boots recommended. Each hike will last approximately two hours.

Ellicottville Historical Society to meet May 8

The Ellicottville Historical Society will begin meeting for the 2019 season on May 8 with John Thomas, who will be giving

a talk called “Shakespeare’s England in Modern Dress.”

The Society meets every second Wednesday of the month — from May to

October — at 7 p.m. at the Ellicottville Memorial Library, 6499 Maples Road.

Meetings are free to the public.

Ellicottville residents graduate from Pitt-Bradford The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (Pa.) graduated about 250 students at its Commencement exercises on Sunday afternoon, April 28.

Local residents from the Ellicottville area expected to graduate were:

The final races of the Junior Alpine Ski season are always a Spring Series event held at HoliMont.

Second-year U14 athletes are invited to race against the U21/19/16 athletes. The purpose of this is to allow the soon to be U16s a chance to score their first USSA points.

The point system in ski racing determines your start number. It is similar in fashion to golf as the lower the points the, in most cases, better the skier.

This is also a first lesson of finishing a complete race for the second year U14s.

Each race consists of two runs with two different courses and a final result.

For the U21/19/16s the only result that counts towards points and post season qualifications is the final result. For U14s however, each run and the final result are all counted towards post season qualifications.

Theoretically, an athlete who did not have one complete race all season could still qualify for State Championships. For an athlete to get on the points list for December 2019 the aims to finish all four runs each day having two complete races to use in calculations.

These results will be overall and an asterisk will denote a second year U14.
