Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to the summer, many times involving family picnics, great shopping deals and a day off.

Before you pull out those white pants and head to the mall, take a few moments to reflect on the true reason for this holiday: remembrance.

This weekend, make sure your American flag is flying, immerse yourself in patriotism and take a few moments to reflect on the lives that have been lost and the freedoms we all enjoy.

Ellicottville’s annual Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Monday, May 27 at 10:45 a.m. through the village. Gather up your family and friends and pay tribute to fallen heroes.

At 11 a.m., meet at the Town/Village Hall for ceremonies by local officials, a 21-gun salute and music by the Ellicottville Central School band.

Also on Monday, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Grove Committee will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Sprague Brook Park which will, weather permitting, include a flyover.

The ceremony will commence with placement of the colors by the AMVETS Post 219 Honor Guard at 11 a.m. It is suggested that people gather at the Memorial Grove prior to 10:30 a.m., at which time many motorcycle riders will arrive from the American Legion in East Aurora and the American Legion in Gowanda.

Gowanda Harley-Davidson will host their Ride to Remember event in conjunction with the ceremony, beginning at the American Legion Post #409 and 100 Legion Dr. in Gowanda. Veterans can enjoy a free breakfast before heading to Sprague Brook.

The pools at Holiday Valley will be open weekends starting this Saturday, May 25, and then daily for the summer beginning June 15.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and what better way to kick it off than making a splash in a crystal clear swimming pool?

Holiday Valley’s three-pool complex features a toddler pool, a lap pool and an activity pool with a slide and diving board.

Relax on the sun decks, grab a drink from the Cabana Ba, or take in one of the many lawn games like Giant Jenga, table tennis and File photo Connect Four.

June 15, then open daily after that through

Labor Day. Pool hours are noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. In July and August one pool and the Cabana Bar are open until 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

Sign up now for summer beginner and intermediate swimming lessons, for ages 3 and up. Lessons are offered 5 to 6 p.m. on July 11, 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27, and Aug. 1, 3, 8, 10 for $50 per program.

A Baby and Me Swim Class is also offered for little ones ages 6 months to age 2. This class is held from 5-6 p.m. July 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 31; and Aug. 2, 7 and 9.

The summer fun at Holiday Valley doesn’t end at the pool’s edge. Farther up the hill, the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster at Sky High Adventure Park are now open weekends.

Next week is Locals Week for Ellicottville Summer Music Festival

The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce recently announced that next week from May 27-31 will be Locals Week for the Ellicottville Summer Music Festival.

Residents and employees working or living in the 14731 zip code may purchase up to four tickets for each concert for $20 each at the Chamber office only from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This year, Don Felder, the former lead guitarist of Eagles, and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will headline the 2019 festival.

Ellicottville’s Short Term Rental Zoning decision yet to be made

Chris Perks grew up skateboarding in a town that did not have a dedicated skate park.

“We were always looking for places to skate,” Perks recalled. “We usually ended up skating in parking lots or in the street.

Of course, that created some friction between us and the local businesses and law enforcement.

As often as we could, we would drive out of town — usually to Jamestown, but sometimes as far away as Rochester or Pittsburgh or Ohio — to skate indoor/ outdoor parks.”

When Chris and his wife, Brenda, heard about an initiative through the Tony Hawk Foundation to support the building of concrete skate parks, they immediately thought about bringing one to Ellicottville.

“The ‘Built to Play’ matching grant program has the mission of helping communities across the U.S. build outdoor concrete skateparks that are free and open to the public,” said Brenda, an advocate for the skate park project in Ellicottville. The Tony Hawk Foundation initiative is partnering with the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation to fund projects like the skate park across Western New York on a dollar-for-dollar basis up to $250,000.

The goal to construct a skate park in Ellicottville is about more than just skateboarding, added Brenda Perks.

“The skate park will provide a safe, designated place for skateboarders, rollerbladers, BMXers and scooters. It will encourage kids and adults of all ages to get outside and be active,” she said. “Whether

you’re an experienced skateboarder or you want to learn, the facility will be open to everyone to use, and at no charge.”

Once the project application is approved by the Tony Hawk Foundation, the Perks and others spearheading the skate park efforts, hope to raise the full $250,000 for match and break ground on the park within two years.

“Our goal is to raise at least that amount, so that we have a minimum of $500,000 to build the park.

According to the Tony Hawk Foundation, the average outdoor concrete skatepark costs $50 per square foot,” Brenda Perks said. “Reaching our funding goal will allow us to build a 10,000 square foot park for our community.”

The Ellicottville community will have a hand in painting the final vision of that 10,000 square foot park, which is proposed to be built in the Ellicottville Village Park.

“The exciting part about this process is that the community is encouraged to give their input on the design,” said Chris Perks.

“After all, this will be a community park, so we want the design to reflect the desires and interests of our locals that plan to use the park.”

With their vision in mind, the group considered the many pieces required to bring the project to fruition and turned to the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

“Our grant writer (Kathy Elser, Chris’s aunt) already had an established relationship with the Community Foundation and introduced our project to them,” said Brenda

Perks. “With interest from both sides, we were able to sit down with the Foundation and learn about the many different ways they can help out as our fiduciary.”

The group’s fund at CRCF will allow the public to make tax-deductible contributions in support of the project and will allow for an ongoing source of funding for ongoing maintenance and other necessary costs at the park.

Despite the daunting fundraising ahead, the Perks and other community members, are excited for the work to come.

“We are excited to work with a world renowned organization such as the Tony Hawk Foundation,” said Brenda Perks. “And with support from the village of Ellicottville, we are anxious to get the project’s fundraising efforts underway.

“It will take the entire community to make this project come to fruition, so we are hoping to get as many community members and businesses as possible to help out in any way they can,” she continued, “whether it be a monetary donation, volunteering with fundraising events, or just helping to spread the word, we’ll all do it together.”

An open meeting to introduce the project to the community was scheduled for May 23 at the Ellicottville Town Center, 28 Parkside Drive in the Cornell Cooperative Extension building.

The May meeting of the Ellicottville Village Board opened with the highly attended Public Hearing regarding the Short Term Rental (STR) Zoning Code Amendments (ZCA).

There were over 50 members of the public including village homeowners, residents, real estate salespersons and rental management representatives in attendance.

This ZCA is at its core a mechanism to enforce the law that the Village Board already passed. The major concern is less than 30 day rentals would not be permitted in the Village Residential District.

Previously STRs were not allowed in the village and those who had been renting were actually operating illegally, even if unaware.

STRs were allowed in the Village Commercial 1 and Village Commercial 2 District with a Special Use Permit. This new ZCA would allow STRs in all districts with a permit excluding Village Residential, Residential Mobile Home and Industrial Districts.

There were a few commonalities between all that spoke, all saying they have either grown up living, visiting or working in the village. All expressed their adoration of the community with recurring themes in all public statements.

The first major concern was the impact that this zoning code amendment would have on the real estate market. “It’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ that the real estate market would drop significantly in the village if this were to go through,” said Aaron Glazer.

The next common agreement is the detriment to the businesses in the village if this were to be passed. “Many come and rent in the village so they can walk to all of the shops and enjoy the restaurants and nightlife without worry of driving,” stated Mike McGorry.

There were few who said they wouldn’t have purchased homes if they knew this was potentially taking effect and were not aware that is was illegal in the first place.

“If you had told me this six months ago, we would have reconsidered if and where we purchased,” said Anthony S. Greg Kerl who owns the Sun-Up Mobile Park said, “Half of the park is in the village and half in the town, how would I enforce or tell people your mobile home is okay but

yours is not?”

There were those that felt that we would deter buyers who would also be paying taxes and funding the school district. “Many of the secondary home buyers are looking to offset the taxes they would pay by renting out the home when they are not using it,” said Melanie Pritchard. “This would really hurt the real estate market in the village.”

There are those who spoke against, feeling that the STRs in the VR District will only breed more problems. “I have been dealing with STRs on my street for many years and there have been plenty of issues: garbage, noise and overcrowding,” stated Mike Painter.

Scott Walters said, “he just wants an even playing field.”

There were some that spoke to finding a happy medium where there are set requirements and using examples from Niagara-on-the-Lake which is primarily a tourist community as well. Brad Hutchins said, “With licensing and proper standards many amazing economic benefits can be actualized. There has to be a way to think through this.”

Another point brought up was that with the increase of STRs, there is a decrease in affordable housing for those who live in the village as full time residents.

Harry Weissman stated, “The area that I see the biggest concern with this zoning is the Land Use Table. It should be permitted in the Village Residential and Residential Mobile Home Districts. It is sensible to allow it in these districts.”

Rachael Wiley-Steffan, spoke to her Rental Management Company ensures proper check-ins and has 24 emergency contacts to take care of all issues. Sheldon MacDonald feels STRs should be allowed but there needs be some enforcement of the rules stating that some currently do a great job with their rentals but unfortunately there are some that do a very bad job.

After the last person spoke, the Village Attorney advised there would be a 10-day window to send in any further written comment. The mayor thanked all those in attendance for their time and input.

Later in the meeting it was discussed that the Village will need to consult their attorney on the laws and are still a ways away from making a final decision. They will need time to consider the input received.

The largest in New York state and third largest in the county, Sky High Aerial Park is a series of platforms, bridges and ziplines built in a four-acre section of the woods and the challenge is to get across to the next platform. There are 13 courses with varying levels of difficulty.

The park is open weekends through June 9, as well as on Memorial Day, and then daily through Sept. 2.

Also at the top of the hill is the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster, a roller coaster built on a mountain and attached to rails that pulls you up the hill and then zigs and zags you down the spiraling path to the bottom.

Routes to Art Studio Tour returns to Cattaraugus County

Art lovers from all over Cattaraugus County were happy to see the return of the Routes to Art Studio Tour last weekend after a several-year hiatus.

Sponsored by the Tri-County Arts Council, this selfguided tour took visitors on a road trip on May 18 and 19 throughout the county’s picturesque countryside to the studios of participating artists and artisans where they could watch the artists at work.

Seen at the Ellicottville Memorial Library, woodcarver Keith McKale displayed his magnificent bird display artwork.

Vendors sought for 12th annual Onofest

The Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism is in preparations for the 12th annual OnoFest scheduled for Saturday, July 27.

Held at the Onoville Marina on West Perimeter Road in South Valley, OnoFest is a one-day event running from 2 to 9:30 p.m.

This family-oriented event is scheduled to have crafts, food and music for the young and old alike.

Bands will play throughout the day with a grand finale of fireworks at dusk.

This year, OnoFest welcomes back The Hootz to close out the night. Held rain or shine, there is no rain date for this event.

The Department is seeking familyfriendly vendors that will set up to display and sell their wares or food. It is desired to have a variety of vendors represented during the event.

By Louisa Benatovich Student Reporter The May 21 Ellicottville Central School Board of Education meeting yielded the results of the district-wide budget vote that had taken place earlier that day.

Voters approved a $13.1 million spending plan for the Ellicottville Central School District by a 157-17 tally.

Additionally, voters also approved the district’s plan to lease three buses and to levy taxes in the amount of $34,042 to Ellicottville Memorial Library. Those resolutions passed, 157417 and 136-39, respectively.

Winners of the two five-year school board seats were incumbent Robert Van Wicklin with 147 votes and newcomer Shana Chudy with 118 voters. Chudy is set to replace Nikki Klein at the start of the new term in July.

There were 14 write-in candidates including Ginna Hensel, Nikki Klein, Eileen Finn, Erin Cornelius, Kevin Eagan, Doug Bush, Bob Scharf and Connie Poulin. The new members will each serve a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2019 and expiring on June 30, 2024.

F/E track stars shine at Spring Day Last Saturday at the Wellsville Spring Day Invitational, Noah Steinbroner took second in the 100-meter dash (:11.65) and third in the 200 (:24.04), leading the Franklinville/Ellicottville boys track and field team.

The Titans’ boys took seventh as a team.

The F/E girls were eighth, led by twins Logan and Hayly Fredrickson.

Hayly took second in the pole vault (9-1) and Logan finished third in the pentathlon with 2,290, including first-place in the pentathlon 100 hurdles and third in the pentathlon 800.

Ellicottville 52 Darius Jones racked up four individual triumphs, winning both hurdles events, the 1,600 and pole vault, to key Maple Grove at Franklinville.

Carson Crist added wins in the long jump and high jump while Dave Brown claimed the throwing events for the Red Raiders. ECS to allow Native American students to wear stoles for graduation

By Louisa Benatovich Student Reporter After a week of administrative meetings, student involvement and social media upheaval, the Ellicottville Central School District overturned a decadesold policy concerning graduation regalia.

Typically, a graduation ceremony is a time for students to show the fruits of their academic labor in the form of pins, stoles, cords and badges.

This year, four Native American seniors will graduate from the Class of 2019, subjecting the district to an unprecedented push for the rules to be changed.

The purple stoles gifted to the four students by the Seneca Nation were deemed not an academic achievement, but rather a cultural symbol, and therefore had no place at the event.

The four girls, a group of National Honor Society members, star athletes, New Visions students and high academic achievers, protested this opinion to the high school principal and district superintendent.

Career stoles, not directly academic, have been continually allowed at graduations for years.

Confusion ran rampant, and seniors spoke of sitting at graduation and engaging in other acts of civil disobedience in solidarity.

“When I walk across that stage, I am not only just representing myself, but my family, my extended family, my tribe and my Native American ancestors,” said senior Jessica Jimerson, before the approval.

Not many Native American youths graduate from high school, Jimerson said. In fact, Native Americans have the lowest graduation rates of all ethnic groups.

“I am proud of who I am and what I have accomplished,” she said. “I would love the opportunity to walk across the stage at Ellicottville with my regalia on and show everyone that I am as a strong Native American woman who has and will accomplish great things.”

for women and ribbon shirts for men, the stole, moccasins and other ceremonial wear.

“I grew up watching other seniors graduate with Native American regalia on, and I have always envisioned myself being proud to walk across that stage showing who I am and the culture I represent,” Jimerson said.

After the approval, senior Sierra Maybee voiced her happiness.

“I am so pleased that the school is finally allowing us to wear the stoles at commencement,” she said. “It is a great honor to celebrate our culture in front of the school.”

Maybee said she wants to use it as a moment to inspire other girls like her.

“I want them to see that Native Americans can succeed, can go to college, and can follow

their dreams,” she added. “It never should have been an issue in the first place.”

In the wake of the Salamanca City Central School District’s similar overturn two years ago, the Ellicottville School Board dedicated part of their May 21 meeting to the polarizing subject.

School Board President Connie Hellwig issued a statement that reads as follows: “On behalf of the Ellicottville Central School Board of Education, I wish to address the controversy that was created last week regarding the request from Native American students to wear a ‘Native American Stole’ during the ECS Graduation Ceremony.

“We are saddened that inaccurate information was posted on social media sites, and the personal attacks and accusations directed towards Mr. Erich Ploetz,” Hellwig continued. “Mr. Ploetz was acting under the direction and support of the superintendent and Board of Education.

“Over the past few days, we’ve learned and confirmed with the Seneca Nation that these stoles signify academic achievement and accomplishment,” she concluded. “Therefore, we will permit these to be worn during this year’s graduation ceremony as they do, indeed, celebrate academic achievements and accomplishments.”

The Ellicottville Central School graduation will take place June 28 at 7 p.m. in the Ward Gymnasium and Auditorium.

A rider meeting will be held at 9 a.m. along with a moment of remembrance. Kickstands up at 9:15 a.m.; the ride starts at the Gowanda American Legion Post and will travel through Collins to Springville and up Route 240 to Sprague Brook Park in Glenwood, where a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m.

LITTLE VALLEY The Village of Little Valley will hold its annual Memorial Day Celebration starting with a parade put on by the Little Valley Fire Department, American Legion, VFW and the Cattaraugus-Little Valley High School Band.

The parade will begin at the Little Valley Fire Hall, go down Rock City Street, turn on

Main Street and then on to Court Street. It will stop at the Civil War Monument on the corner of Court and Seventh streets. Here a wreath will be hung to honor the members of Cattaraugus County’s 154th Regiment who served in the Civil War. The Memorial was dedicated by the Descendants of the 154th Regiment in 1914.

The parade will continue to the Little Valley Cemetery where the Memorial Day Ceremony will be held to honor Little Valley’s veterans.

Use of the event proceeds is now open to all entities in Gowanda that benefit the community. For 2019, the primary beneficiary will be the Gowanda Volunteer Fire Company Equipment Fund.

This year’s version of The Happening retains most of the signature features including the opening night motorcycle parade, a motorcycle stunt show and the tattoo contest.

It will also feature an expanded number of bands throughout the weekend, including local favorites like Uncle Ben’s Remedy.

There will also be a few new twists this year.

The Ride-In Bike Show has been replaced with a Virtual to Live version.

Obituaries Richard Landen Fowler 1943 – 2019

Richard Landen Fowler, 76, of Crystal Beach, Ontario, Canada, passed away May 10, 2019, of natural causes in Ellicottville.

Richard was born on May 3, 1943, in Rugby, Warwickshire, England, immigrating to Canada in 1948 with his parents and older brother John, and settled in Deep River, Ontario.

After graduating from Mackenzie High School in Deep River, Richard was

awarded a Doctor of Dental Surgery diploma from the University of Toronto in 1967. He had a successful dentistry career spanning 40 years including a dental practice in Burlington, Ontario.

Richard was known for his cooking along with having a great sense of humor. His talents and passions included dentistry, jewelry making, woodworking and sailing.

Richard was an athlete who was excellent at skiing and squash. He also enjoyed the family cottage north of Toronto where he loved boating, fishing and duck hunting.

Richard is survived by his partner, Mary Jane Markham; a daughter, Jane (Brandon); son, Jeffrey (Leigh); grandchildren, Andrea, Kristin, Jack and

Frost; brothers, Steve (Lynne) and John (Rose); nieces, Lisa, Laura and Danielle; nephews, Michael and Bryan; as well as former wife, Louise.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Phyllis Diana Joan Smith and Ivan Landen (Dick) Fowler.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ellicottville American Legion, 6500 Maples Road, Ellicottville, NY. Kevin A. Thalheimer Kevin A. Thalheimer, 48, of Otto, passed away Thursday (May 16, 2019) at his home.

He was born May 4, 1971, in Gowanda, the son of the late Allan Lee Thalheimer and Jeanette Benson Thalheimer, who survives.

Mr. Thalheimer was a truck driver, and milk hauler, for over 20 years, having driven for many

local trucking companies, including Maxx Transport of Holland.

He was a past member of the Snowbounders Snowmobile Club.

Besides his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Alexis Thalheimer; and a son, Nicholas Thalheimer, both of Little Valley; a brother, Keith Thalheimer of Cattaraugus; and a sister, Kim Thalheimer of

Cassadaga.

Friends called Sunday (May 19, 2019) from Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St., in Little Valley, where funeral services were held Monday (May 20, 2019).

Burial would be in Liberty Park Cemetery.

Glenn R. Work Glenn R. Work, of 5291 Beeles Road, entered into the arms of the Lord, Sunday (May 12, 2019) at Buffalo VA Medical Center.

Born Oct. 22, 1945, in Coudersport, Pa., he was the son of Raymond and Alice Whitney Work. On April 21, 1973, in Bear Hollow, he married Janice E. Fedick, who survives.

Glenn was raised in Coudersport, along with 12 siblings, and graduated from Coudersport High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Seabee for 10 years, including two tours of duty, in Vietnam, until his discharge in 1975. He was the recipient of a Seabee of the Year award while in the service.

He worked for various companies, including the former Olean Steel and Metal Co., and the former

King’s Windows, in Little Valley. He then owned and operated Work’s Mobile Repair. He retired, after working for Meyer Tire Supply Inc., in East Otto.

Glenn had been attending the Allegany Baptist Church. He enjoyed watching spaghetti westerns on television and will be remembered for his good sense of humor and his talent at telling stories and jokes.

He is survived by his loving wife Janice; 12 siblings, Don (Kathy) Work of Dickinson Center, Faye Trautsch of Eastman, Wis., Dale (Emma Jean) Work of London, Ohio, Mara (Terry) Miller of Smethport, Pa., Arda (Ed) Walker of Pensacola, Fla., Barb (Thomas) High of Stevens, Pa., David (Diane) Work of Coudersport, Ivan (Kim) Work of Marysville, Ohio, Leeta (Brian) Bennett

of Shinglehouse, Pa., Alan (Marlene) Work of Bliss, Iris (Kevin) Evingham of Oswayo, Pa. and Lori (Mark) Roeske of Oswayo; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends were received Monday (May 20, 2019) at the Allegany Baptist Church, 3236 Maple Ave., Allegany. A funeral service was held at the church.

Ellicottville Mayor John Burrell in his report said the NYCOM Annual Meeting in Cooperstown went well, as did the STW Local Government Conference in Houghton There is progress being made on the Joint Water District with the town, he said.

At the NYCOM convention, Burrell was presented with the Local Government Achievement Award.

This award he then presented to Niles Pierson, village engineer, who the mayor said the award should go to. It is because of all the hard work Pierson has put in that earned the accolades, he said.

The village board declared the Consolidated Water District an unlisted action under SEQR. The board then

approved the resolution granting the village’s consent to a proposed extension of the Town of Ellicottville consolidated water district No. 1 into the Village.

There is a street light conversion project in the works with two choices: buy the poles and lights or pay to switch them over the LED. Both options are being investigated. There are also grants being looked into for village smart street lights that could include features such as music, dimmers and WiFi. There was a motion on the new Take-Home Vehicle Policy; a second and only one other aye with ayes carrying 3 to 2.

In Other Business, the village board approved permits for Summer Music Festival, Jazz & Blues Festival and Taste of Ellicottville being held in the village later this summer.

EM and its cleanup contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley, LLC (CHBWV) recently completed the relocation of two 69,000-pound HighIntegrity Containers (HIC) from their location inside the Fuel Receiving and Storage (FRS) facility at the West Valley Demonstration Project.

Each HIC, which includes a 14-inch thick inner concrete shield and a two-inch thick exterior carbon steel shield, was relocated from the FRS decontamination pit to a secure outside storage area.

Each HIC contained filtering materials used in the FRS water treatment system.

“This accomplishment allows the continuation of the FRS deactivation,” said DOE-WVDP Director Bryan Bower. “By performing this work now, we can use our highly-skilled workforce to further reduce legacy risks.”

Lazy summer afternoons are a lot more enjoyable when they’re spent in or alongside a pool, and kids tend to say “I’m bored” with considerably less frequency when a pool is within arm’s reach.

Pools are certainly fun, but they’re only as fun as they are safe.

According to the USA Swimming Foundation, between Memorial Day and Labor Day in 2018, at least 148 children younger than age 15 fatally drowned in swimming pools or spas. While those figures represented a 9 percent decline from the year prior, 148 deaths is still 148 lives lost too early.

Since a majority of the wellhouse would have to be torn up to install a new filter system, Rule said MDA also recommends replacing the piping to the well house.

“The piping has been in there just as long as the filter has,” he said. “With the higher pressures inside the water treatment plant it’s probably approaching the end of its service life as well.”

Additionally, the prechlorination equipment going into the filter should also be replaced, Rule said. The board discussed the option of building an addition to the well house to store the chlorine tank separately from the filter, which could help with the corrosion.

The board also approved hiring Bob Scharf, a licensed water operator at the West Valley Demonstration Project, as an overseer of the project.

“Bob has experience with the water quality issues that Bonn Val experiences from his work at the West Valley nuclear plant,” Brown said. “It has similar high iron situations.”

Brown said Scharf has experience with the current equipment, the proposed new equipment and the problem with the system.

“He’s going to start now looking into the setup and the design,” Brown added.

Pat Martin, a resident of Bonn Val, said a possible causes of the system issues is the lack of routine maintenance, adding that it hasn’t been done regularly enough over the years and likely led to the issues in recent months.

“I’m hoping Bob is the guy to say to say every three years you need to do this, or every six months you need to do that,” he said. “I don’t think anybody knows to do it.”

Although it would be expensive to replace the system, Martin said this project would make the water treatment more stable and last much longer, especially if someone can check on it regularly.

Dale Dineen, water operations manager with the village of Ellicottville, said the routine maintenance would include regularly flushing the pipes and watching the chlorine levels.

Before the town can determine how the project will be paid for, whether through grants or bonding, Brown said they have to wait for the bids to come in and see what costs the town is dealing with.

“I know the town board has put a lot of time in on this, and speaking for a couple residents up there, we’re really appreciative of this,” Martin said.
